A complicated password may be useful to beat programs which try every possible combination but most systems will lock you out after a handful of incorrect attempts.

Unique passwords:
Using different passwords on different services is good advice but unless you’re using a program that remembers your passwords it’s too easy to forget unique passwords. If you’re like me you’ll just end up resetting your password using security questions.

Two-Step Verification

The two step verification process is a step in the right direction For banking or any service where real harm could be done it’s worth the extra step. If someone gains access to your cell phone or one of your email accounts the benefit is lost. Unfortunately, you’re trusting that the company is not going to take advantage of having more of your personal data like your cell phone number or alternate email address.

Some Advice Will Never Change

As far as recent failures by Home Depot, Lowes and other large companies the advice hasn’t changed much in 20 years. When your bill comes, check all your charges and make sure they’re legitimate. Most likely you can access your credit card online and see charges as they come in. If you haven’t already, register an account connected to your credit card and review charges regularly.

Reviewing your bills doesn’t just apply to credit or bank cards. Keep an eye on any charges like your cable or phone bill. Legitimate companies have been known to add bogus charges. Verizon wireless added a monthly charge for ring tones on Cindi’s phone. They claimed she agreed to the monthly charge by not responding to a text message. They removed the charge when I explained her cell phone at the time didn’t support test messaging.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06125680988914445547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19337979.post-60671620634553717742014-08-26T10:21:00.001-07:002014-08-31T23:09:40.685-07:00Sunnyside Road Bridge Construction & Detour

Leaving the Village of Scotia via Sunnyside Rd.

Starting on Tuesday, September 2nd the Glenville section of Sunnyside Road will be closed to all but local traffic accessible from Freemans Bridge Rd. Just inside the Village of Scotia the Sunnyside Road Bridge will be resurfaced and closed to all traffic.

Unlike recent construction on the Western Gateway Bridge to Schenectady, both lanes of the Sunnyside Rd Bridge will be closed to traffic. Currently, the main rail activity is from Amtrak passenger service.

I can’t imagine what really held things up for two years. It’s a popular event with families arriving early to pick a good spot or to enjoy a chicken barbecue, another tradition of the Scotia Fire Department.

What many residents miss follows the parade and occurs next to the Scotia Library in Collins Park. The Department of Health requires four feet of visibility in the water in order to allow public swimming. The flooding caused by hurricane Irene has left a significant amount of suspended clay in the lake, reducing visibility. The Village treated the lake with alum this spring to clear the water, but any wind, wave, or swimming action stirs up the clay from the bottom to reduce visibility to unacceptable levels. The answer seems to be to let the lake naturally recharge through the springs that feed it and wash the sediment out through the outlet. It is unclear how long this process will take, but until we can meet DOH standards, there will be no public swimming in Collins Lake.”

Luckily, the clay silt is not a contamination so boating is still welcome and no restrictions have been announced to fishing which is a year round activity. It’s simply a visibility issue which impacts the safety of young swimmers. In fact, the Scotia branch of Schenectady County Library has fishing poles & tackle equipment kids can sign out just like they would a book!

As you can see from the photo below flooding due to Hurricane Irene caused the nearby Mohawk River to overflow into Collins Lake. The springs which are very active on the north side of the lake held the Mohawk off briefly but eventually the entire lake and Collins Park become part of the river.

Flooding in progress in Collins Lake as seen from Pytlovany Point

Collins Park in August 2011 after Hurricane Irene flooding

In addition to the river particles settling in the lake bed, damage was done to the two pumps used by the lake aeration system. Matt says, the fish is native to the Lake and he’s caught a bunch over the years.
He says it’s a bottom feeder so I think all the kids learning to swim at the beach can rest easy.

In this photo you can actually see the Mohawk River taking over the north side of Collins Lake where you’ll find the majority of springs that feed the lake.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06125680988914445547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19337979.post-77521927363146144882012-05-09T11:19:00.001-07:002012-05-09T11:19:58.251-07:00Salvation Army Spud Night
One of the local events I always recommend is coming up on Thursday, May 17, at the River Stone Manor, 1437 Amsterdam Rd.

You might not think a meal centered around a giant baked potato makes sense but if you attend the Salvation’s Army Annual Spud Night I guarantee you’ll have a great meal.
