I have McAfee Security Center running on Vista Ultimate. When I try to use the backup and restore option I get a popup that says it requires .NET 1.1. I have .NET 3.5 installed. Contacting McAfee support get me different answers.

The first contact just keep saying install .NET 1.1 and also says the back program will work with .NET 3.5. No help at all.

The second contact said the backup program require .NET 1.1 and will not work with .NET 3.5, I need to uninstall .NET 3.5 and install .NET 1.1.

I can not uninstall .NET 3.5 because I have another application that requires it.

So does anybody have a good solution to this problem?

What is the simplest way for VBA code (in Excel) to send some sort
of signal to a .NET process and tell it to do something? The VBA
code knows the task ID of the .NET process, because it started that
process (a Windows Forms app) using Shell(). It isn't necessary
to pass any information either way (although that wouldn't hurt);
all that is needed is a way to poke at the .NET process so that it
wakes up and looks for an instruction file that has just been
written by Excel.

Right now the .NET process is polling the disk, looking for new
instruction files. This actually works fine, but since there can
be long intervals between new instruction files, it would be better
if there were some way for Excel to notify the .NET process directly
when a new file is written. I'm sure there's a way to do this
using sockets and threads, but I'd like to add as little complexity
as possible, so if anyone knows a simpler way I hope you will let
me know about it.

Hi all, I've registered here in a last ditch attempt for help on how to access my MSN Messnger. (I'm using vista home premium 32 bit).

I've never had any problems at all untill I was forced to upgrade to the latest version. Now I can't even log in.

Here's the problem...

Every time I've signed in to messenger 8.5 for the last year or so, it's asked me if I want to upgrade. I've always said no, as the version I have has always worked fine. But now a pop up box states that I have to upgrade or I wont be permitted to sign in.

So, ok I upgrade. The download appears to complete, then rolls back and fails, every time.

The error code is Ox80070643 and the message is "Installer has insuficient privileges to modify this file... looks like another program is preventing the installer from working".

I've tried with my firewall turned off, cleared cache etc, but nothing works.

I've browsed the threads on this site and it seems to be a common problem. I've tried all the suggestions that I've read, including the very helpful suggestions and links from Jonathan Kay.

I've posted this here as it seems to be busier than the other forum I posted in (windows live - are there 2 forums?).

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a small webserver on my Vista Ultimate desktop using IIS. I have done what I wanted and it works when I go to the local host, but the problem is I can't access it from my laptop using my local network to check if it works outside of my computer.

I want to make this work, since I started doing some web developpement and would like it to be available in my local network.

If you need more information (which I would think you do since this post is quite small), just tell me what you need to know. Thanks in advance.

This has been happening since the first day I installed the os and turned on the computer.

Basically, Window Media Player randomly opens which collapses all of my other open windows. No matter how many times I may close the program using all sorts of methods, it reopens again and again. Usually, I would just let it sit for about 30 mins opened and then I could close it without issue. Recently, however, it has been popping up nonstop. Even if it is minimized, it reopens itself so that I cannot to anything on my system. I am actually amazed that I have been able to type this without interruption.

I have restarted my computer and the problem has not change as of recently. It pops up on startup. I have tried removing it from the startup programs, but I can't find WMP on the list of programs. I have also tried to determine if it was a flaw with my keyboard (like a stuck ATL key or something) but there was no success either. I have also searched for a WMP reinstall, but that evidently does not exist for Vista.

Currently I am at a loss because the program has been popping up all day long and I haven't been able to do much of anything on the computer except sporadically click back and forth between WMP and the Microsoft help page. If anyone has any clue as to how to fix the problem I would be so, so, so, so, so happy.

Also, what are the consequences of simply deleting every WMP file from the C drive?

I have been having this problem since i installed windows on my new machine. I've been trying to eliminate any startups, and services I could to fix it..but for some reason no matter what I've tried it still freezes. It's not even constant or sometimes is over abundant amount of times in a day.

It will happen from me checking my email, gaming, downloading, or multitasking. Definitely not doing over a certain action.

It's vista ultimateX86, I've messed around with the power management, maybe now im thinking it's a software issue or a patch that is conflicting a driver?

BTW im runing magicJack, and Vipre if either of these software have been linked to this kind of issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, i've been reading around the forums and i've noticed alot of people have this problem with Vista, well:

I'm a gamer, i play many games such as WoW, Most ijji games, Css, Aion etc..

Lately i've installed Windows Vista, and when i seem to play games, or anything else for that matter (ventrilo, skype, msn messenger), my ping seems to hit the roof every now and then, spiking.

I've tried pinging my router's IP and discovered every so often it DOES spike, so therefore it must be the connection between my PC and the router which is upstairs, and it's not the games, or my internet connection because it worked fine on XP. No one in my household is downloading torrents.

I've also tried Wireless Zero Shutdown, which has done nothing.

So what seems to be the problem? I really don't feel like re-installing XP either.

If you could please help, thanks alot.

I have a shortcut icon for my lightscribe control panel, but I have never used it, because I am not sure if having the program installed on my computer actually means that my DVD/CD drive (TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA Device)has the capacity to work with lightscribe & label my disks.
How can I be sure that my computer supports lightscribe? Will I damage my drive if I just test this by inserting a lightscribe CD/DVD? I am not familiar at all with this program, I only know that it should label my discs with any picture I choose, & I have to turn the CD/DVD over for this to happen.
THANKS:)

After seeing Brad Brooks’ demo of Play To in Windows 7 a couple weeks ago at the New York City Windows 7 Launch Party, I decided immediately that I must use Play To in my home. I went out a picked up a Linksys DMP100 Wireless-N Music Extender by Cisco. This device is on the market today with firmware that is currently compatible with Play To for Windows 7.

Future releases of firmware for the DMP100 will enable it to be logo’d for Windows 7 which means it will have passed all of Microsoft’s internal tests and has complete functionality in Windows 7 such being see in Devices & Printers, ability to name the device, and easier setup with wireless networks.

What you do with this device is connect it to a stereo system and/or a set of speakers and then to your network. You then can play your music to this device over your network.

The Linksys DMP100 supports Draft Dual-Band 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and WEP, WPA, WPA2 for security. If a physical network connection is needed, it also has an Ethernet port. For connecting to a stereo or speakers, it has a RCA L/R Input, a RCA L/R Output, an S/PDIF Output, and a 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Output.

I set up the Linksys DMP100 on a shelf in my office (please pardon the Star Trek DVDs) and connected some Altec Lansing speakers to it via the 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Output.

With my D-Link DIR-655 Router, I was able to easily connect the Linksys DMP100 to my wireless network as it supports Windows Connect Now.

On my Windows 7 PC, I fired up Windows Media Player and I have a playlist for the entire Beatles catalog (I purchased ALL of their remastered albums a few months ago). To “play to” the Linksys DMP100, all I needed to do was right-click on my Beatles playlist and chose “Play To” and select “Cisco Player”. I was then able to start playing the playlist.

And while I was playing music to the Linksys DMP100, I was also able to play music and video to other PCs on my network and videos to my Xbox 360.

I will also be talking about other devices that support Play To in Windows 7 – stay tuned!

I'm using Windows Vista (Home Premium), 64-bit. This morning I was reading a word document when this happened: (notice the pattern)

I'm not sure what is causing this, but the problem re-occurs roughly every half hour, especially I'm running multiple programs. Sometimes, the screen is completely covered with this pattern.
Is this something wrong with windows or is a hardware problem?

Hi folks,
I'm new in here and relitively new to Vista. I've got an Asus 5535 laptop and everything was running fine until just the other day when I turned it on. The computer will boot but opens an automatic update screen (3 of 3 0%) then shuts down and does the same again, in a loop. Automatic updates are turned off so I'm lost as to why it's doing it.
I've run sys restore and tried to boot up in safe mode etc but nothing will get around it. I've not made a recovery disk and so it looks like I'm screwed.

Windows start up can't find an error because the OS has loaded ok. Is there any way I can bypass this spurious update so that I can get into windows?

Cheers,

Jon

On the taskbar I have blue rectangle button «Minimize all windows», which allows me to access my desktop.

The problem is that if I have many windows open (for example, 30 windows), and I press this button, several of the windows titles on the taskbar become blinking orange.

Please don't say that «window title blinking orange on the taskbar when the application needs your attentinon». I know this. In my case approximately half of taskbar buttons (for ex., 12 of 30) become blinking WHEN I press «Minimize all windows» button.

Full system reinstallation did not help.

There are several nice features in IE8, but I sure wish I'd of stayed with IE7 because things just don't work so well with 8.

1. Help file says when web slices are available on a page I will find the web slices button on the command bar, also on the page. However, I have it set to beep at me when I'm on a page where web slices are available and it's beeping all the time but there is no button on the command bar. I hover my mouse all over the page and no button shows up. I've gone into customize/add-remove commands and there is nothing there.

2. I tried to access a link from my Microsoft newsletter and twice it took me to a page that said DNS Error - Server cannot be found. Whenever I try to access any Microsoft page it takes forever to get there. I'm using Microsoft's browser and it doesn't work worth a darn on their pages. Is there some setting I need to change.

3. I do not understand at all about newsreaders. I have posted messages on Windows Community that I can not find and something was said about having to be subscribed to a newsreader, or some such thing. Can someone tell me something about this? It said Windows Mail can be set up to be the newsreader. I use WM, but when I Googled this the boxes they showed in instructions did not appear when I tried to follow those instructions.

4. Is there a way to get a button for "tinyurl" onto my tool bar? According to instructions there should be but I can't make anything work.

5. Sometimes when I try to go to a site I get some kind of error page the first time, and then if I try again it will take me to the page. Why is that? Are there settings that need to be changed or something?

I don't care how dumb I sound or how dumb y'all think I am. I just care about someone helping this dummy.
