It’s not often you see a major update in a popular service being welcomed both by users and critics, but so far it’s what happening to the ‘new’ Google Maps – everyone who tried it, loved the new features. Google seems really decided to leave the competition behind, when it comes to online maps – although the visualizations featured in today’s selection include some created with different development platforms.

On a different topic, the organization of the ICC 2013 just opened a call for short papers (15 mins with 5 mins for questions) on aspects of research into design as it relates to web mapping for inclusion and 5 minute lightning talks that share an idea, open a debate or deal with a very specific issue. The ICC 2013 preconference workshop “Mapping in a digital world” is a one-day workshop that will explore practical themes relating to the design of effective online maps and information products; focusing on realtime, interactivity and design not only of the map but of the user interface and experience to support cartography.

Just a day after officially closing the deal on Tumblr, Yahoo (finally) unveils a major update on Flickr. It was long overdue, but it looks great – you can check out our profile here. So, we decided to pay tribute to one of the first visual-content orientated social networks with a selection of 20 groups (or communities) for infographics and data visualization.

[This is a guest post by Yushin Kato*, telling us a bit about her infographic project Living Ruins.]

When I was faced with the open-ended instruction of creating a campaign that could “change the world” I was a bit overwhelmed. There are infinite areas in which we can better the world so deciding on a topic was extremely difficult. In the end, I talked with a friend who is very passionate about wildlife issues and she told me how important coral reefs are to marine life and human civilization.

Living Ruins was designed as a campaign to bring awareness and educate the general public about the benefits of coral reefs and the dangers they face.

I narrowed down my focus on the world’s ten largest coral reefs located in three major regions: the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic/Caribbean. Each reef has a section that displays its benefits (aiding the fishing industry, tourism, marine biodiversity, coastal protection, cultural heritage, and medicine and research) as well as the harmful threats damaging the reefs (sedimentation runoff, overexploitation, pollution, and bleaching). This data is placed on a timeline, allowing the effects to be visibly compared with one time period to another.

Perhaps the most difficult part of this project was the research. There is a ton of information on coral reefs but searching for specific numbers was not easy. I had to find multiple statistics for certain reefs and convert the numbers to the same measurement, such as converting percentages to currency. As I gathered data I then had to figure out the best way of organizing as much information as possible. I wanted to show the great benefits the reefs offer as well as touch on the threats. It took a few sketches for me to finally come up with the visual map.

The color palette was taken from the vivid colors of the corals, and the concentric circles taken from the organic and round forms of brain coral.

Early in 2012, the Internet picked up an interesting exhibit that was about to start at the London Transport Museum, showing some early 1900′s charts and visualizations. Painting by numbers – making sense of statistics stayed open to the public from January 6 to March 18, 2012, and we thought it would be a nice time to revisit some of the graphics used to illustrate/promote the event.

Portfolio of the Week – Alejandro Colmenarez

Today it’s the first time we have the pleasure of featuring an infographic designer from Venezuela, although Alejandro Colmenarez currently works in Panama City, at the Diario La Prensa newspaper.

Prior to that move to Panama, Alejandro spent over a decade in the Diario Meridiano and Diario El Nacional, two important Venezuelan newspapers, building a solid career as one of the most interesting and respected South American visual journalists.
