Another Stanley Park photoshoot! In my mind, it will always remain one of my favorite places for an engagement session. The combination of beautiful nature and breathtaking views (especially from Prospect Point!) is hard to match anywhere else in Vancouver. And if you happen to have great weather, you’re gold! Such was the case with Jayne and Alan’s e-session. Visiting from LA, the two of them were originally from Vancouver and desired to have their photos taken in the city where they fell in love years ago. I met with these two a couple of days before their session and we hit it off immediately! Try as we might, as wedding photographers it naturally takes more effort to build lasting bridges of friendships with some couples than with others, and that’s just the way relationships are in any walk of life. However, after working with Jayne and Alan and having dinner with them after the session, I left with a positive feeling that they will be one of those couples who I’ll have the pleasure of staying in touch with years down the road.

Jayne and Alan, it was an absolute pleasure working with you both and I wish you two the best of all possible futures together! Have a great wedding in September 2013!

Karen & Tyson’s Pre-Wedding Session | David Lam Park

Karen and Tyson are one of the most easy going couples I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Instead of the more usual engagement session we’re used to seeing, Karen and Tyson went all out and strutted around Yale Town in formal wedding attire. Although neither of them had professional photos taken before when I asked them, after seeing the way that they were able to smile so naturally and effortlessly, I wondered if that was actually the case! The majority of their session took place at David Lam Park in the hot sun; not the kind of weather we’re used to seeing on a May day in Vancouver, but it was definitely a nice surprise.

Can’t wait for their wedding in July at the beautiful Vancouver Club!

For fun, Karen changed into a traditional Vietnamese dress. I believe it’s called an Ao Dai.

For fun we decided to do a re-enactment of their proposal.

Jennifer & Stephen’s Fashion Themed Couple Session

Get ready for something a little bit more bold and daring! Jenn and Stephen are both friends of mine who are involved with the fashion industry, and so for fun we decided to do a fashion themed photo shoot in an industrialized area, or “concrete jungle” as Jenn put it. This session was unique in that all the photos were taken after sunset (usually we take some during the day beforehand), and we added more drama and edge with flash photography. Definitely had a lot of fun with this one even though it was short and sweet!

Sam & Heidi’s Pre-Wedding Session | Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

As much as I love shooting locally, I relish at the opportunity to capture beautiful moments in areas that extends beyond Vancouver’s borders. Such was the case with Sam and Heidi’s pre-wedding session where we drove down to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival held in Burlington. Ever since I pitched the idea to them to have their photos taken in the tulip fields outside of Vancouver and they enthusiastically agreed, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the opportunity; not only because of how beautiful the tulip fields were, but because I knew I would have a fantastic time working with Sam and Heidi.

And I definitely did.

Having been involved from the beginning of the creative planning process to the end of the session itself, they were a delight to work with all throughout. Being a wedding photographer, it’s definitely a treat to know that a couple is looking forward to a photo shoot as much as you are!

The tulip festival itself runs annually from April 1 – April 30. Given how moody the weather gods have been as of late, we were afraid that the shoot would need to be taken elsewhere in case it rained rain. Luckily for us, the rain didn’t start until after our Sam and Heid’s pre-wedding session was over! Now get ready for some color overload!

Stefanie & Benson’s E-Session | Granville Island

One of the things about 2013 that makes me very grateful is the fact that I have the honor of working with so many of my friends who are getting married this year! Even though there are those who advocate against mixing business with friendships, I can’t help but say that I absolutely love photographing friends! Take Stefanie and Benson for example. I met Stefanie back in UBC when we took a second year Chinese history class. Although we probably don’t remember anything from the course itself, luckily Stefanie remembered how obsessed I was with photography even way back then. You can imagine how happy I was to hear from her again after almost 6 years, and to be asked to photograph her’s and her fiancé Benson’s wedding.

Benson proposed to Stefanie at Granville Island, and that’s also where we took their engagement photos. They expressed an interest in having pictures taken both during the day and night, so what we did was take some photos before sunset, had dinner at the Cat’s Social House (love their quesadillas!) and finished off with some photos at night. If you’ve been following our work, you’ll know that we absolutely enjoy photographing couples at night as that lends to a more dramatic look and feel, which both our couples and us love!

Looking forward to their wedding in August!

Linda & Greg’s E-Session | Steveston Richmond

I met Linda years ago back when we were still students at UBC. I’ve always thought of her as an artistic person with a unique perspective on seeing the world. It was through her that I had the pleasure of meeting Greg, and I have to say that the number of things they share in common would make one think that they simply be better suited for one another. Since spring is in the air, they expressed great interest in having a cherry blossom themed photo shoot, which I was equally as excited to do. Our E-session took us across an area of Richmond which happened to be rich with cherry blossoms trees, and ending at Garry Point Park, one of my favorite spots in all of Greater Vancouver and a perfect place to capture images against the setting sun.

Karen & Leo | Mayan Riviera Mexico Destination Wedding

I wasn’t sure what to expect as I packed my bags for their destination wedding in Mexico, having only heard stories from my friends about the experiences they’ve had, little did I know that I would be having one of the best weekends of my life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Karen for the first time years ago in Vancouver, and Leo I had met shortly afterwards when they first started dating, so I had known them already for quite a long time prior to their wedding. If there is one thing to note about these two is that they LOVE to dance! In fact, it was during a fateful night on the dance floor when first met. Being a couple who lust for fun and adventure, they made the decision to have a beautiful beach wedding in the Mayan Riviera at Sandos Playacar. Not only did I get to photograph my first beach wedding in another country, but what was equally as rewarding was the rekindling of old friendships and making new ones. Karen and Leo truly were in great company for their entire trip, and their combined energy was so contagious that they truly brought the party with them where ever they went!

Karen and Leo, I wish you two an extremely happy marriage filled with lots of dancing!

Ka Wai & Heywood’s Hawaii Destination Wedding

As a wedding photographer, I always consider it an honor when a bride and groom chooses us to photograph their wedding. There are literally hundreds of photographers to choose from in Vancouver alone, and so not a day goes by that I’m not thankful for all the couples that have given us the opportunity to work with them. You can, therefore, imagine the immense gratitude we felt when Ka Wai and Heywood asked us to photograph their destination wedding in Oahu-Hawaii. This was my first time in Hawaii, and it was about as beautiful as I had imagined, the perfect setting for Ka Wai and Heywood to exchange their vows in front of God and desire to be together forever. Their ceremony was held within a resplendently beautiful chapel at Ko Olina Resort on a warm and sunny afternoon. A brief window for photos with family and friends took place shortly thereafter, and to follow was their reception at Roy’s restaurant where we all enjoyed the most scrumptious sit-down-dinner I’ve ever experienced! We waited until the next day to take portraits of the bride and groom alone where we visited Iolani Palace, and finally closing the curtain with some classic sunset portraits at Waikiki Beach.

Congratulations Ka Wai and Heywood! May your future together be as bright as the sun was on the day of your wedding. Thank you again for allowing us to be a part of it.

Moon & Patrick Pre-Wedding | UBC, Jericho Beach and Gas Town

It’s always an honor for us when a couple from out of town wishes to work with us. Such was the case with Moon and Patrick flew all the way out from Hong Kong to get their pre-wedding photos taken. It was their first time in Vancouver so we were happy to not only be their photographers but semi-tour guides as well! Being shot in mid December, the weather was freezing as anyone familiar with Vancouver can well imagine, but thanks to some strategically placed heat packs Moon and Patrick were able to survive through their 6 hour photoshoot just fine at UBC, Jericho Beach and finally Gas Town. Seeing these two makes me wonder if I could bear to do a photoshoot in such cold weather if I were in their shoes. Oh the things people do when in love. Congratulations Moon and Patrick and have a lovely wedding in Paris!

Laura & Randy at Minoru Park | E-Session

Of all the couples I have photographed since I started photography over 5 years ago, Laura and Randy have been among the closest to me personally. I’ve known these two since before they even met and started dating 7 years ago, and so when they asked me to take their engagement photos, I was happy and excited beyond belief. Our photo shoot at Minoru Park was both effortless and a lot of fun. These were taken very recently just before the new year so the weather was cold to say the least, but these two bore it like the troopers I’ve always known them to be. Having a love for all things vintage, Laura and Randy came up with the idea to suspend mason jars containing candles for the final images of the session. It was an absolutely beautiful scene and I loved the way the images turned out!
