Job description: The Baltimore Sun has an opening for a 5-month paid residency for a graphic artist. A successful candidate should able to create clear and concise presentations that explain complicated subjects for print and online. We seek a high-energy self starter who works quickly, has strong interpersonal skills and brings ideas to the table. The person in this position will run the gambit of assignments -- creating daily graphics for the paper one moment and working on a Flash project the next. Opportunities abound and entrepreneurship is welcomed in our newsroom. Thorough knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Flash are recommended. Familiarity with GIS and 3D software are a plus. Some experience in journalism -- professional internship or college newspaper -- is a definite plus. We are hoping to move quickly on this, so please send submissions by Friday, May 21. We hope to have someone in the position by the end of June. Please send a cover letter describing why you're right for this job along with a resume, portfolio and list of references to jay.judge@baltsun.com.

Man, we had an awesome chat last night about which professional organizations give you the best bang for the buck. Some officers of Society for News Design joined in — VP Steve Dorsey, region 3 director Melissa Angle and Chris Courtney, training director. We heard from folks who're members of the Online News Association, too (getting to be quite a bit of crossover between SND and ONA.)

According to wthashtag, we had 28 contributors. That's a pretty healthy little party. A couple things that came out of it: Kyle Ellis got volunteered to spearhead an NYC meetup for SND, and I think I spy rumblings of one in Raleigh, though that development took place away from the #vizedschat hashtag.

Anyway, catch up on the convo here. And feel free to jump in any time here. Meanwhile, see ya next Tuesday. Same bat time, yada yada.

"With nearly 70 categories, Website entries make up the majority of Webby Awards Winners, Nominees and Honorees. Some are beautiful to look at and interact with. Others are a testament to usability and functionality. And a handful excel across the board. To be selected among the best is an incredible achievement worthy of praise -- and perhaps a little bragging."

No, really. Come chitchat with Megan Lavey Heaton, Ernie Smith and me tonight at 9 EDT. It's our first #vizedschat on Twitter. We'll be talking the future of news design. You're a news designer, a graphic artist, a shooter, an editor. Surely you must be curious. Is there a future for news design? What will it look like? Will it involve humiliating encounters with Comic Sans?

Days before Children's Day we had invited all twitterers to send in photos of themselves when they were kids, saying that we would publish their photos on Children's Day. What happened next was a virtual flood of photos by people from all walks of life. There were so many that we carried the photos as mugshots on both A1 and an inside page. Likewise, days before Valentine's Day we invited people on twitter to send us photos, which they did. And since this day was also Chinese New Year (which is huge in Bangkok, Thailand), the graphics department added illustrations of dragons and went for Chinese characters -- yes, Chinese characters -- in the main headlines on A1 and the back cover -- to wish people both a happy Valentine's day and a Chinese New Year. Of course, the Chinese characters had an English translation.
the pages can be viewed on Mario's blog at http://garciamedia.com/blog
