Chi Walks

Longwood University is known for our long standing traditions. One of the traditions is the secret organization Chi. Chi was founded here at Longwood in 1900. The group stands for the spirit of Longwood. They do secret Chi walks on Longwood's campus which you will see here. On the day of the walk they will place blue and white flowers around campus to signify a walk that night, most walks take place at midnight on different parts of campus. The members of Chi wear hoods and gloves to cover themselves because no one knows who they are. They only reveal their senior year at the end when they have a huge Chi burning... a big bon-fire. The members of Chi try to promote the Longwood spirit through their Chi walks and Chi droppings. Chi droppings can be anything from pieces of fabric to Christmas ornaments or rubber duckies floating in the fountains. On these, Chi will write things such as "good luck on exams," "welcome back," and others. If you find a Chi dropping it is said to be veryyy good luck, and you have to pass down that luck and the dropping when you graduate.

Lip Sync

Lip Sync is a really fun tradition here at Longwood that happens each semester. Mid way through the semester each new member pledge class of every sorority and fraternity create a funny and exciting five minute dance to music. They have costumes, make banners and include older members of the organization. Once every group has performed there are different awards, such as best performance, best theme and best overall. The whole school comes out and it is a really fun time!

Water Balloons

One thing that you probably realize is Longwood is in the town of Farmville... which to you might not seem so exciting. However we do realize that we might be in a farm town, however there is always something fun going on. The week after Oktoberfest the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi put on a water balloon fight. It was a lot of fun, and just one example of some pretty cool stuff we Longwood students do to have fun!

Oktoberfest 2009

Oktoberfest 2009 :) First you will see the spirit leaders do their traditional dance. Next KLOWNS are performing. A long time ago at Longwood, we actually had a circus complete with clowns and animals. KLOWNS is a way to keep that long standing tradition going, just in a little different way. This years Oktoberfest was amazing, with a cookout, tons of booths and music all day. It really is an amazing event we all look forward to!

Color Wars!

Color wars is probably one of the most fun traditions here at Longwood. When you come to Longwood you get a class color, if you come in on an even year you are red class. Right now Seniors and Sophomores are RED CLASS :) and Juniors and Freshman are green class. (Longwood is the only school where RED and GREEN make BLUE :). Each year the start of Oktoberfest begins at 4:00 pm that Friday with Color Wars. As you will see in the video, we basically group in red and green class and throw paint on each other. It is a huge tradition and a lot of fun!

Alzheimer’s Walk Kick off to Oktoberfest!

The Thursday before Oktoberfest weekend each year, the campus participates in an Alzheimer's walk. This is where the honorary spirit leaders are announced (they are professors or Longwood faculty that exhibit amazing spirit for Longwood and the students). They also announce the Junior Miss Oktoberfest, Miss Oktoberfest, Junior Mr Oktoberfest and Mr Oktoberfest. After we do a walk around the campus the students end on Stubbs Lawn for a cookout and music. It is a lot of fun and contributes to an amazing cause.

Event Kickoff to Oktoberfest :)

This event, the Oktoberfest bonfire, kicks off the week of Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a long standing tradition here at Longwood. The Sunday before the festivities start Dr. Jordan professor of anthropology speaks about Longwood's Oktoberfest traditions. Morter Board who puts on these Oktoberfest activities has a bonfire and cake and drinks for the students, and it's an amazing way to start the week :)

No need to worry, and Senior Luau

Hi everyone :) This video is going to show you the first kick off event for the senior class, the senior luau! It was a lot of fun, the university had really good food, music and tables out on Lancaster Mall. There were also representatives there from the Career and Academic Advising Center and Longwood letting us know the resources that are available to students. In the first part of this video I thought it was needed for me to address the issue that has happened in the Farmville community this weekend so that you get a perspective from a Longwood student.

Rock the Block

Rock the Block was the first of its kind at Longwood, and hopefully the start of a really cool tradition. The town of Farmville and Longwood partnered and closed off part of main street and the Longwood Landings for a huge festival. There were over thirty booths which included most of the shops in Farmville. There was a booth giving out roses from the flower shops, Domino's and Papa Johns giving out free pizza, Moe's southwestern grill had free food, Chick-ful-a also had a tasting tent and d-hall catered the event for students with steak and pasta. There was music playing and even fire works at the end of the night. I think that has to be the first time I have ever heard of fire works in Farmville!!! Here is a short video of how many people were attending, and hopefully you will be at Longwood next year to experience the next Rock the Block! :)

Convocation 2009

At the start of your senior year at Longwood University you have the opportunity to participate in Convocation. Convocation is a huge tradition here where you are officially recognized as being a senior. The President of Longwood, the amazing Dr. Cormier, speaks as well as a guest speaker and as you will see in the video, the Senior class president. For convocation you wear your gown, and you have one of your best friends, or your little in your sorority or fraternity, make you a cap. This cap can have anything from your favorite things, the most embarrassing stories you had at Longwood, or the most memorable. At the end of the ceremony Dr. Cormier announces everyone as officially being recognized as a senior and your capper puts your crazy cap on your head. Most caps are outrageous, and everyone gets into it.... It's such an amazing tradition :)

Sorority Walk Fall 2009

Each semester sororities and fraternities go through a weekend or week long recruitment to find new members. Once that is done each fraternity and sorority participates in a walk. The new members that just received an invitation to the sorority get to run to the sorority they picked and they get shirted with that sororities letters. It is always really fun and a long standing Longwood tradition :)
