The town’s severe water crisis hardly meet the increasing demand for clean water for tourist-related facilities.

Many households have no choice but to buy a cubic meter of fresh water at VND100,000- VND350,000 while some hotels and restaurant pay VND500,000 ($21) for a cubic meter of fresh water.

As the water level of Bac waterfall and other lakes have fallen due to prolonged drought, water plant in the tourist town is unable to provide enough water for residents.

However, residents complained of the construction of many hydropower plants at the source of Bac waterfall. The number of hotels and tourist facilities has increased massively and more and more travelers flock to the town whereas facilities can’t keep pace with increased demand.

Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ha Van Thang said that the Urban Environment Company will use its vehicles to bring water to the town and the provincial People’s Committee will cover transportation fee.

The Department directed restaurants and hotels to refuse bookings at the time when water resources have been reduced.

Ninh Thuan (VNA) – Visiting vineyards in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan, the grape capital of the country, has long been an enjoyable experience for visitors to the area.

Ba Moi and Thai An are the two largest vineyards in the province, drawing in the highest number of tourists. The farms allow visitors to experience grape harvesting by hand and to learn about grape cultivation and wine production.

The Ninh Thuan Grape and Wine Festival 2019 is scheduled to take place in Phan Rang-Thap Cham city and six districts in the province from April 26 to May 2.

Within the framework of the event, a number of festive activities will be held, including field trips to grape and apple farms, an industry-trade fair, a contest for ethnic minority groups in the province, a performance of Raglai’s “Bo ma” (farewell to the dead) ceremony, a street festival, and a beach sports festival.

Grapes are a highly valued staple crop in Ninh Thuan, which were first introduced to the province in 1960 and test-planted by the South-Central Centre for Agricultural Technical Research based in Ninh Son district. Commercial production began in the 1980s.

Ninh Thuan is now home to over 1,200 ha of grapes and nearly 200 facilities processing grape products such as wine, jam, and honey.

Grapes make up about 20 percent of the total production value of the local cultivation sector, according to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In 2012, Ninh Thuan’s grape varieties were granted geographical indication (GI) certification by the National Office of Intellectual Property.

In early 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s plant cultivation department recognised Ninh Thuan province’s NH01-152 as a new grape variety and allowed the province to grow it on a trial basis before beginning commercial cultivation. –VNA

Speaking at the workshop, Chairman of Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Long, emphasised that Quang Ninh aims to turn tourism into its spearhead economic sector, creating a driving force for the local socio-economic development with high professionalism, an international level, synchronous and modern infrastructure and high-quality tourism products imbued with Quang Ninh’s cultural identities, helping it become one of the leading locales in tourism in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Quang Ninh has set the target to welcome 15-16 million visitors, including seven million international travellers by 2020. The total number of tourists should reach 30 million by 2030, of which international visitors will be 15 million.

However, Quang Ninh tourism still faces challenges, including pressure to develop tourism combined with preserving natural and cultural heritages and promoting mineral and construction material production for sustainable development, as well as developing tourism in line with the local urban infrastructure.

Vu Tien Loc, President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that with an important geological and geopolitical position in the North, Quang Ninh has advantages for economic development, especially in the tourism sector, but it needs to build links with other provinces and cities to grow together.

In addition to traditional tourism products, Quang Ninh recently has a new type of “institutional” tourism – that is Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) tourism, thanks to its creative and strong action in administrative reform and socio-economic management, to become the bright spot for other localities to study, Loc added.

According to economist Tran Dinh Thien, Quang Ninh needs to focus on promoting its internal resources, including investment from domestic investors, to create a breakthrough for local tourism development, while focusing on building infrastructure and investing in digital connections in an outstanding way.

Delegates at the workshop suggested Quang Ninh focus on building international-level infrastructure facilities and diversifying and improving the quality of tourism products, in addition to improving the quality of human resources for the tourism sector and enhancing environmental protection for sustainable tourism development.

Quang Ninh is renowned for its scenic spots and attractive cultural and historical works, such as Ha Long Bay, Yen Tu Scenic Area and other special national monuments, along with a synchronous and modern infrastructure system consisting of Van Don international airport, Ha Long international cruise port, Ha Long – Hai Phong and Ha Long – Van Don highways, and a system of high-class hotels, resorts and amusement parks.

The change in urban development with new infrastructure projects has been put into operation, and new service and tourism facilities have been launched with higher quality, combined with improved awareness on tourism by local people, businesses and government, has proved and affirmed the right direction of Quang Ninh in the goal of promoting local tourism in line with its heritage values.

Foreign tourists at the Muong Hoa mountain train station to Fansipan Peak

Plenty of visitors, modest revenue

Over the past three years, the number of foreign visitors to Vietnam has grown at an annual rate of 30 percent. In 2017, Vietnam ranked sixth among the world’s 10 fastest growing travel destinations. In 2018, Vietnam welcomed 15 million foreign tourists.

Despite continuous increases in the number of visitors, Vietnam’s revenues from tourism are far lower than in other countries in the region.

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), foreign visitors spend an average US$900 on a trip to Vietnam, compared to US$1,105, US$1,109 and US$1,565 spent in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand respectively.

The relatively modest spending reflects lower prices, which, paradoxically are one of Vietnamese tourism’s major selling points. “Compared with Thailand, the average length of stay of visitors to Vietnam is almost the same (9.5 days in Vietnam and 9.6 days in Thailand). However, visitors to Vietnam spend only US$96 per day, while those to Thailand spend US$163, and Singapore: US$325,” said John Lindquist, senior advisor to BCG – a member of the UK’s Tourism Industry Council.

Where to spend money?

In addition to Vietnam’s lower prices, tourism experts attribute the modest spending to lack of opportunities for visitors to spend their money other than on sightseeing and accommodations. Even major cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc Island lack a diversity of entertainment facilities and shopping centers to serve visitors. Da Nang, a coastal tourist hub in the central region, is an example. Although it has maintained a high economic growth rate for many years and invested strongly in tourism infrastructure, the city still lacks special products and entertainment services for visitors, especially at night.

Da Nang offers beaches and sea, seafood, the Non Nuoc stone carving village and Ba Na Hills, but little else of interest to foreign visitors. “Destinations such as Phu Quoc and Da Nang are attractive to visitors, but they need to create new offerings to encourage visitors to come back. Visitors to Da Nang like Ba Na Hills, Golden Bridge and luxurious relaxation facilities such as InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. However, these are not enough to get visitors to stay longer and encourage them to spend more money,” said Dang Bich Tho, Deputy General Director of Hanoi Redtours.

Sharing this opinion, Nguyen Tien Dat, Deputy Director of TransViet Travel, said, “Da Nang has many tourism advantages but still lacks bars and entertainment facilities to attract visitors at night. It has night markets but they remain small-sized and sell mostly street food. From Da Nang, tourists can travel easily to Hoi An and its Old Town. However, shops, markets and other service facilities in Hoi An close early, at about 10pm, while other Asian cities often stay awake beyond midnight.”

Private investment at tourist sites in recent years has focused on providing integrated models that include diverse entertainment and shopping facilities. Examples include the Sun World Ba Na Hills complex above Da Nang, Sun World Fansipan Legend in Lao Cai, Sun World Halong Complex in Ha Long Bay, and Vinpearl sites in Nha Trang and Phu Quoc. However, these high-grade tourism products and services have not kept up with growing demand, while few private companies dare to invest in such tourist projects.

Inadequate infrastructure is a hindrance to tourism development. Kenneth Atkinson, Executive Chairman of Grant Thornton Vietnam, said that while both the quality and quantity of tourist accommodations in major Vietnamese cities have improved greatly, demand keeps growing faster than supply, reflected in increasing room charges and occupancy rates.

The question is whether increased spending options would drive up prices, making Vietnam less attractive to budget

tourism. Conversely, prices could still remain lower than those in neighboring countries, while better infrastructure and

spending options would draw many more tourists and thereby increase industry revenues.

In early January 2019, the World Cardiology Conference organization board for the first time decided to organize the event in Da Nang instead of HCMC, after Da Nang successfully organized the 2017 APEC Summit.

Pham Mai Hoang Loc from Saigontourist confirmed that after APEC Summit, the travel firm got orders from big groups of MICE tourists. “Da Nang is now a hot destination for international MICE travelers,” she said.

Representatives of other travel firms said the same. Previously, Da Nang also attracted MICE tourists, but the tours were only on a small scale. Only after the 2017 APEC Summit, Da Nang become a destination for big events. The number of conferences with thousands of attendees has increased rapidly.

“We suggest a lot of destinations, including Nha Trang, Ha Long, HCMC, Hanoi and Da Nang, but clients choose Da Nang,” said Tran Xuan Hung, chair of Viking, which is organizing an event for 3,500 MICE travelers from Indonesia, who will stay from March 27 to April 11.

Nguyen Duc Quynh, deputy CEO of Ariyana Da Nang, which has a 12,000 square meter international conference, said Ariyana opened in late 2017, but it is running at 50 percent of capacity.

A high number of international events took place there, including events with 4,500 participants and conferences with guests from 150 countries.

GM_EN_PC_ARTICLE_Native_ads

“The real capacity is higher than expected,” Quynh said.

A branding expert said that for MICE tourism, important events such as APEC Summit in Da Nang and the US-DPRK Summit in Hanoi offer ‘golden opportunities’ for Vietnam to attract tourists.

GM_EN_PC_ARTICLE_Inpage_Banner

A representative of a travel firm said that his firm had been chosen by clients, even though it did not have to attend the international bid, because it was known as one of the key service providers at the US-DPRK Summit.

Reports all show the steady rise in number of MICE tourists in recent years. The operational capacity of conference and exhibition centers is relatively high. In HCMC, there is only one large international exhibition and conference center in district 7, which has been fully booked until the end of the year. Event organizers now find it difficult to organize international exhibition events.

Le Hoang Yen, chair of Global DMC, said the number of Global DMC travelers this year is expected to be 20 percent higher than last year.

The information was released at a regular press conference held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) in Hanoi on April 17.

The activities are expected to feature the participation of around 300 travel businesses, airlines and representatives of tourism management agencies from Vietnam and Chinese localities.

Exchanges between enterprises from the two sides, as well as activities introducing Vietnamese destinations and art performances, will be the highlights of the programme.

The event, as part of the national tourism promotion programme in 2019, aims to attract more visitors from the Chinese market to Vietnam.

According to the Institute for Tourism Development Research,Chinese visitors always account for 28%-30% of the total international arrivals in Vietnam.

It is forecast that, in the future, the number of Chinese tourists arriving in Vietnam will continue to rise thanks to the low cost, short travel time, and the increased quantity and frequency of flights between the two countries.

In addition to the programme promoting Vietnamese tourism in China, the MoCST will finalise and submit Vietnam’s tourism development strategy by 2030, with a vision to 2050, to the Prime Minister as well as develop guidelines on tourism competitiveness index and priority indicators for tourism for ministries and agencies, among other plans.

People flock to Hung Kings Temple for the festival (Photo: VNA)

Phu Tho (VNA) – The Hung Kings Temple historical relic site in Viet Tri city, the northern midland province of Phu Tho, welcomed over 7 million visitors during the Hung Kings Temple Festival from April 5-14.

The figure was provided by the organizing board of the Hung Kings Temple Festival.

On April 14, an incense offering ceremony was held in the province Phu Tho to commemorate the death anniversary of Hung Kings, the legendary founders of the nation.

The death anniversary of Hung Kings has long been considered a significant day of the whole nation, illustrating the spirit of solidarity and tradition “when drinking water, remember its sources”.

Phu Tho along with the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, the central province of Nghe An, and the northern province of Son La representing different regions across the country has actively carried out plans in celebration of the death anniversary of Hung Kings and Hung Kings Temple Festival in 2019.

Various kinds of activities have been taking place during the day such as palanquin processions, contests to make “Banh Chung” (square glutinous rice cake) and “Banh Day” (white, flat, and round glutinous rice cake) – which were created by the 18th prince of Hung King some 3,000-4,000 years ago – symbolysing the “earth” and the “sky”, respectively, and art and cultural programmes.

Legend has it that Lac Long Quan (real name Sung Lam, son of Kinh Duong Vuong and Than Long Nu) married Au Co (the fairy daughter of De Lai). Au Co then went on to give birth to a pouch filled with one hundred eggs, which soon hatched into a hundred sons, believed to be Vietnam’s ancestors. However, soon thereafter, Lac Long Quan and Au Co separated. Lac Long Quan went to the coast with 50 of the children, while Au Co went to the highlands with the rest.

Their eldest son was made king, who named the country Van Lang and set up the capital in Phong Chau (nowadays Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province), beginning the 18 dynasties of the Hung Kings.

The kings chose Nghia Linh Mountain, the highest in the region, to perform rituals devoted to rice and sun deities to pray for healthy crops.

To honour their great contributions, a complex of temples dedicated to them was built on Nghia Linh Mountain, and the tenth day of the third lunar month serves as the national commemorative anniversary for the kings.

The worshipping rituals of the Hung Kings was recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.-VNA
