The enclosed porch behind Rachel Perveiler’s Little Village apartment is crammed with shelves stuffed with books and games. It’s also filled with children from her neighborhood. Perveiler’s porch is the meeting place for “La Biblioteca del Personas,” or the People’s Library. Meeting here has become a weekly ritual for Perveiler and the children in her neighborhood. Loyola Students Use the Hijab to Start Conversation

There are many misconceptions about women wearing the hijab, according to Saadia Gaziuddin, a junior at Loyola University Chicago and member of Loyola's Muslim Student Organization (MSA). From being oppressed to not fully integrating in American culture to hating men, the headscarf is one misunderstood piece of cloth. But students at Loyola MSA set out to help others understand the hijab, as well as reflect on their own identities through the hijab, through two events: "Walk a mile in her hijab" and the "Hijabi Monologues". Vocalo Overdrive intern Karis Hustad talks with Gaziuddin and other students who participated in the events to find out what they learned and what the hijab means to young Muslim women today. When Bill O'Reilly called Eric Deggans a "race-baiter" on The O'Reilly Factor, Deggans decided to embrace the title: "Okay I'm a race-baiter, but I'm a race-baiter my way," he says. That led to Deggans, TV and Media critic for the Tampa Bay Times, authoring "Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide A Nation". His book covers news, scripted TV and reality TV, and how the fight for an audience has fostered prejudice and made conversations about race harder than ever. Vocalo Overdrive intern Karis Hustad talks with Deggans to find out what it was like to be called a race-baiter, where he sees media coverage heading and what the audience can do to prevent prejudice from continuing.
