Backstage at London Fashion Week

Fashion Week is over again and the sales campaign is just beginning for another season.

Today I received the backstage images from my trusted backstage photographer Thomas Zanon-Larcher which are as beautiful as ever but especially so because of the perfect Topshop supported venue of The Tanks at The Tate Modern.

Thanks to all that helped to make this one of my best collections to date.

An intimate celebration of Spring/Summer 2013

Last night we held an intimate celebration of our Spring/Summer collection in a private dining room of the Tom Aitkens Restaurant in Chelsea.

The food was beyond incredible thanks to the Michelin star credited skills of Tom himself and a nice guy to boot.

We had the most perfect night so a huge thanks to Tom for having us and I highly recommend a visit. See the menu and examples of his work here:

Special mention goes to the sculptural candied beetroot dessert.

Someone wondered if it might have been a model for the set of a Kylie video, and another asked Tom directly: "How do you make an onion taste so good?"

Tim Walker Love

I was really sad to miss Tim Walker's exhibition opening this week due to illness, but I was there in spirit and physically in a huge print of me with Linder Sterling that was an outtake from our i-D shoot in 2009 based on our collaborative collection. My good mate Charlie sent me a shot from the opening.

Our final collection for the Fred Perry Laurel Women's collection has had it's first drop in store this last week.

The collection which is based on cartoon horse riding and Penelope Pitstop has prints illustrated by my friend Ricardo Fumanal - perfect for the Olympics mood. Go for gold!

Olympic Fever

On Monday, Acer - one of the partners to the London 2012 Olympics - hosted a group of us to see the men's finals of the vault and rings gymnastics, and the women's uneven bars final, where Brit Elizabeth Tweddle won a bronze medal.

Lulu Kennedy, Lorraine Candy from Elle magazine, Ben Reardon from GQ Style, stylist Victoria Young, and Vogue's own Tilly Macalister-Smith and Jaime Perlman watched at the O2 from a VIP box which had amazing views of the events.

We were all beside ourselves with excitement and had an amazing day, one to remember for a long time.

Woolmark Australia

This week I was flown to Sydney by the very lovely Woolmark Australia team to judge the Australian leg of the International Woolmark Prize - the the winner will fly to London to battle it out for the international title in February in London.

The judging was today and, after a rigorous selection process, the judges were unanimous that the clear winner should be Wunderkind Dion Lee - pictured below with Christine Centenera of Vogue Australia.

The trip has been a dream, staying at the recently refurbished Park Hyatt on the harbour with Opera House views and a weekend off to see the Sydney sights like the Sydney Biennale offerings at the Museum Of Contemporary Arts, as well as Cockatoo Island (Sydney's answer to The Lido in Venice), and The Sydney Theatre Company Cafe and Theatre where Cate Blanchett and Paul Upton are creative directors.

The weather has been in the low 20's and not a cloud in the sky - despite it being the middle of winter (sorry).

Back on Wed evening to fit SS shapes before a short August break.

On Friday I shot my pre-spring/ summer 2013 collection with Jermaine Francis, on Canadian beauty Kate King and here are a few highlights:

The collection is a mix of clean geometry and Regency decadence thanks to the exclusive silk-jacquard woven by British heritage tie makers Steven Walters - or so the soundbites say.

Kidnapped in the Desert

The last time that I was in LA for the London Showrooms, I snuck in just time to be bound, gagged and dumped in the desert for a short film called 'Get Richard', directed by Justin Anderson and produced by Epoch films for Vogue Italia Online.

Needless to say I didn't make the opening party but did escape in time to make all my appointments over the few days afterward.

Last night, I took my friend and Vogue creative director Jaime Perlman to the Royal Academy's celebration of the arts, with the Queen in attendance. It was a privilege to be invited and all very surreal. Highlights were seeing Charlotte Rampling looking so elegant and beautiful in flats and pants, Alan Bennett and obviously Her Majesty.

Thanks to Acne who gave me my jacket and sweater (although I was sweaty enough). Perlman wore our spring/summer 2012 collection lace hoop dress, which is still available here at Net-A-Porter, and Manolo sandals.

Glassy Eyed

I spent last weekend largely devoted to the talent and charm (and repetition) of legendary composer Philip Glass (seen here in paint form by Chuck Close and photo form by Robert Mapplethrope), first I watched the excellent and inspiring documentary about him and his career A portrait in 12 parts at The Barbican film theatre.

This was in preparation of seeing the re-staged epic operatic masterpiece Einstein On The Beach. Which, after four hours of repetitious counting, beautifully crescendos with one of my all time favourite tracks, Knee 5 - which I used for my autumn/winter 2009-10 Linder Sterling show as the opener, my favourite collection of mine and one of my proudest career highs, watch it here.

We might have sneaked off to the pub for a quick bite to eat 2 hours in and wondered if Phil had any relationship to The Count from Sesame Street, and weirdly on YouTube-ing him I found this piece that he did in fact compose for Sesame St, which only cements his reputation as a verstaile genius, scores from Scorsese to Sesame St and beyond.

I'm really chuffed to have had the opportunity to see, and even be bored by, Einstein On The Beach, a rare treat.

She Bangs The Drum

The other night my pal, the multi-talented Josephine De La Baume dropped by my studio while I was having a hayfever-induced nap and woke me up to invite me to her gig at Bedroom Bar on Rivington St with her band Singtank. The album is released on the April 28 (I think) and this was her first London gig (I think, maybe I'll just make this all up), I loved her rock/pop/folk mix and I liked the venue for its Cavern Club-feeling complete with microphone feedback.

I genuinely look forward to owning the album and getting to know the tracks a bit better so I can join her on vocals for their next London gig on May 4 at KoKo in Camden.

The very talented photographer Thomas Zanon-Larcher took this new batch of backstage-style images at our Modern Times (named after the Charlie Chaplin classic) presentation, it gives more of an understanding of how it worked to those who missed it, hopefully you can see the influence of Jacques Tati's 1967 film Playtime, see some of the classic scenes here and here.

The presentation is done - I really enjoyed working in this way, we shot a lookbook live by Jermaine Francis while girls walked around the photographers pit, like a deconstructed half show/half lookbook shoot, a stylised factory set up. The girls wore earphones to hear Jermaine's directions over the sound track which was directed by Daniel Lea at Golden Hum, you can listen to the soundtrack here.

I'm getting excited for the autumn/winter presentation at the ICA Theatre on Sunday.

The invitation has arrived, embossed cardboard by Hudson-Powell design, super subtle but I like it. Manolo has done some brilliant shoes again and we have been working hard on developing a product with Vodafone that incorporates technology and hasn't been done before.

I've been asked a lot recently why I decided to do a presentation rather than a traditional catwalk show.

The reason is that, for now, I want to do something economically and emotionally responsible for the business. Catwalk shows are an amazing, exciting way to present collections and while we have just secured a private investor, I want to start to focus on presenting core product in an intimate, personal and creative way for the next stage of the business' global development, rather than being caught up in the razamataz of putting on a show.

On Sunday, I went to the new German art exhibition at the Saatchi gallery where CSM MA tutor Alexandra Birkin was exhibiting her work alongside others, including Stefan Kurten who did beautiful, detailed, oil-on-canvas interior and architectural paintings.

Definitely worth a look.
