Aritzia, a new retail boutique for young women, is opening its first Manhattan location in SoHo Summer 2011.

Aritzia has developed a large-scale Collage to mask the construction of the 10,000 square foot Aritzia Flagship location at the corner of Broadway and Spring. The Collage was created by New York based artist Monika Wyndham. Wyndham was inspired by the supernatural powers of nature and the beauty of the Northwest Coast.

Wyndham combined images of natural beauty with those inspired by Aritzia’s feminine aesthetic to create a fantastical landscape that challenges the viewer’s sense of reality and vantage point.

“The environment we’ve created can be seen as a reflection of the Aritzia girl’s character. She’s confident, adventurous and independent. She is unafraid of risks without being reckless and, in the midst of chaos, she’s collected and beautiful. She personifies grace under fire.” – Artist Monika Wyndham

In addition, Wyndham is collaborating with Aritzia to curate the collection of art on display within the Aritzia SoHo location.

Pat McGrath applied Max Factor’s Experience foundation to add luminosity to the skin, paired with strong lashes courtesy of Max Factor’s Volumizing mascara before working mouths into glassy claret pouts with Elixir lipgloss by Max Factor. “It’s sensual and luxurious,” said McGrath. A bright red hue was used in the center of the lips to give definition and an exaggerated quality.

Hairstylist Luigi Mureno slicked back manes into low-slung ponytails that were accessorized with feathers. “It’s masculine, but sexy,” he said.

Hair was pulled into the nape before its length was crimped, backcombed and then straightened using a flat iron to achieve volume. Many heads were topped with fedoras in bright hues.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana usually offer a pretty obvious thematic cue with their invitation. This time around, however, the playfully uneven font on the invite read more like a puzzle. Well, there was no need to read much into it — the collection revolved around one thing: letters. Could we buy a vowel, please?

The runway started out upbeat enough, set to a disco mash-up of Madonna’s “Vogue” and Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand” tracks. And the first girls out did strike a rather fun tone in clothes covered in graphic black-and-white block lettering, which worked a casual street vibe, early Nineties-style. Sweaters, either cropped or oversize, were extra slouchy while jackets came generously cut and mannish, with big, broad shoulders. The designers sent out plenty of leggings and tight, bandeau skirts and dresses, too, and folded in a layering motif — sweatshirt over dress over swishy sheer skirt — that boosted the sporty urban feel. Ditto the heels du jour: wedge sneakers.

But Dolce and Gabbana also kept on (and on and on) with the alphabet theme and the lineup soon became one big typographical blur, especially when they switched from the two-tone graphics to a dizzying rainbow of florescent hues, done in sequins for evening. It was relentless. Ultimately, this was one collection that wasn’t exactly letter perfect.

Don’t you love it when fashion gets political? Even faux-political, serving up talk-worthy snippets beyond which clothes you love or hate? It hasn’t happened often as of late. Enter Miuccia Prada. At her preshow press conference on Thursday, Prada offered a sound bite that could trigger days of conversation. The intent behind her engaging school-girlish collection was to make “glamorous and sexy materials” (python, sequins, fur) “more innocent and fresh.” “The collection is not exactly childlike, but more ingénue….It’s fun, with a cartoon effect,” she said. “Women should look…more innocent, rather than making girls look like women.”

Come again on that last one? Even in this crazy industry, few people would take issue with the second half of the statement; what non-SVU episode type champions adolescents tarting themselves up before their time?

As for the first part: Women should look charming — check. Witty — if a gal’s got it in her. But more innocent? If Prada is proposing that women feign innocence and dress like overindulged majorettes, why? Because, just like injectable fillers and core-strengthening classes, a Peter Pan collar helps women deny the ultimately futile notion that we can turn back time? Or because said Peter Pan collar and its juvenile associations play to certain yearnings in men who may still be intimidated by strong women, and still carry a torch for the eighth-grade hottie?

Maybe. Or maybe Prada thinks women should look more innocent because change is core to fashion, and a year ago she showed an ultrawomanly collection that focused on the bust.

Whatever her reasoning, Prada keeps fashion interesting; she triggers conversation. Long lauded (and sometimes mocked) as a fashion intellectual, she’s also willing to risk high silliness in the name of style. (Spring banana skirts, anyone?) It works because behind all the provocation is a rare talent; season in, season out, Prada makes powerful statements with her clothes.

For fall she did indeed go girlish. But show us the chic woman who couldn’t find a winning coat in this lineup. Yes, one saw an Olive Oyl (or was it Orphan Annie?) waft to graphic, low-belted dresses, all mixed box plaids, outsized borders and giant buttons. But plain silk versions looked ageless; both stood up to inventive maryjane-python boots. As for those shimmery fish-scale paillette numbers, Prada seemed on the same wavelength as Marc Jacobs (it’s happened before). But while he went arch, she worked the gentle, sweet side of plastic adornment. And Prada’s cocktail dresses are descaled in back, for ease of sitting. What girl or woman could argue with that?

Preview of the new Prada Spring Summer 2011 womens accessories collection that will hit stores next year! Yes, fashion is so fast, we are way ahead of time to know what’s on offer even for the coming season. Good for consumers to plan their purchases

What do you think of Prada’s Spring Summer 2011 women’s accessories?

In my opinion, the pieces make a strong graphic statement. Bold use of pattern, in colourful stripes created a impactful visual language (Kinda reminds me of prisoner’s uniform from yesteryear.Colours are exciting, bold and loud (Especially the ultra bright blue which seemed to be the key colour for Spring Summer 2011). You cannot help but be noticed. The ultra thick wedge sole are key design traits for footwear. Applied on brogues, peep tops, heels… you name it, you got it. Woven leathers in multi-colours are also an interesting choice of material (although they feel very Bottega Veneta).

The bags also play heavily on graphic pattern, with almost every handbag created made from canvas and accented with leather buckles. The blue and white ones evoke a strong nautical holiday sensibility. Beyond bags and shoes, those colourful fur boas are a standout and looking incredibly seductive!

Having ’sing’ all the positive points of the collection, it’s time to get brutal. Sad to admit, the entire collection runs on the ‘NON-PREMIUM’ side, but more casual. Canvas material no matter how gorgeous, is still fabric. Devoid of any hardware, it looked even less expensive. Leather buckles may seem like a innovative alternative to metal, the way they have been crafted looked less polished.

Sorry, Prada. For the amounts these bags and shoes are going to fetch, I think there is a need to balance design and ‘looking the price’. I guess Prada fans will appreciate the design concept, but I will think twice in terms of idea vs. price. Call me practical and want my money’s worth.

There were a couple of interesting points made, but here is my little analysis as a consumer :

growth in china

China cropped up time and again in their financials press release. although there wasn’t any geographical breakdown, it was reported that 30% of europe’s sales were from chinese customers. This doesn’t come at a surprise since much of eurozone’s currency had really gone down the toilet this year, making it much more cheaper and attractive for tourists from the far east to come visit and spend.

Other notable news include the buy back of 50 stores in china. This would give them more control over this fast growing market. How significant? As at 30th september, burberry owns 164 retail stores, and 30% of the stores are in china.

China is obviously a very significant and growing market for burberry. But we have yet to see an obvious design shift to deliberately appease/appeal to the chinese audience. no cheongsums, no pandas tigers or dragons in sight yet. They seem to be doing their thing, and leaving the arduous task to the marketing teams, to make the collections relevant and appealing to chinese market. And for the record, i like that.

Digital media was also mentioned in several analysts’ reports. Burberry is one of the first to live stream their shows, the first to stream in 3D, and also one of the first to allow customers to buy straight off the runway. these initiatives created a lot of buzz and brand awareness amongst consumers. the ability to purchase straight off the runway was certainly exciting. if i remembered correctly, this was first introduced for the menswear spring summer 2011 collections held in june 2010.

This should be more significant during their fall winter 2011 menswear show in january 2011. If they deliver the products within 6 weeks as promised, the sale would be recognised before year ended 31 march 2011. Whereas traditionally the items would be delivered to stores in june/july 2011 and the sale recognised in the next financial year. This should bump up sales for this financial year, but i don’t know how big this pre-sales thing is for them, it seems like a good step forward.

Buying off the runway isn’t a new concept though. it works like a traditional trunk show, and in the latter, customers are usually given a discount for buying in advance. That isn’t the case here, but could be worth considering? (of course i would say so, i’m a consumer.)

As a consumer, walk around the sales hall of harrods and selfridges during the july and january months, and you will find burberry’s new collections neatly displayed in one corner. to illustrate the point, i enquired about a particular FW2010 jacket from a certain french label of the moment back in september. I was informed there was still about 40% of stocks not delivered. If stocks were delivered earlier and on schedule, it will spend more time on the retail floor and chances of it selling at full price and at higher margins is also higher. this also suggests that the company is well run and efficiency is in place at the factory. This speaks volumes.

Burberry did very well this year, it’s share price has consistently outperformed the FTSE index of uk’s 100 largest companies (red line above). as an amateur investor, i bought some shares in burberry back in february 2010. If i sell them now, i will realise a nice profit, enough to buy me that really really nice and exquisite coat from burberry prorsum fall winter 2010.

But i’m holding on to the shares for now. hopefully the realised gains would go towards the deposit for my dream home in a few years time. So help me out, and buy some burberry won’t you?
