Mobile Doctors: Personal Devices, App, and HIPAA

CTO Gerald Hetrick discusses the topics and contexts that hospitals, care facilities and doctors face as they face the opportunties and challenges presented by iPads, iPhones, Andorids and the individuals using them.

The consistent theme of the presentations was that the APIs (application programming interfaces) of the devices are the most significant limiting factor on th capabilities of the solutions in terms of ore mobile device management. All the solutions utilize the available APIs fully, but also add other functionality – providing BES management capabilities, wireless expense or quality of service functions, asset management, app management or a range of other features that make any one a better solution for a given organiztion.

The key to this excercise is to get clear on what you want to accomplish now and in the near future.  We will be hosting a webinar on that specific topic next month:

There were a few questions during the event that we didn’t get to.

• Which Android devices have onboard encryption?  Bryan Thomas from our Mobile Engineering Team offered this: “Currently Android 2.3 and lower doesn’t support native data at rest encryption. The only Android OS to do so is 3.0 Honeycomb, which is a tablet only OS. They will be using the knowledge and trials from 3.0 to build in native data at rest encryption into the next release of Android , code named Ice Cream Sandwich ( 2.4 ? )”
• Can you comment on the current FDA approval of apps for Physicians to view MRI, CAT etc via iPhone and iPad? Any examples of policy on this? We applaud the FDA in clarifying the rules regarding software development for mHealth and for making an excellent decision. The FDA guidance (http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-02-15/html/2011-3321.htm) makes it pretty clear that Apps that collect or display data – but don’t interpret data or make specific medical judgements – don’t require special approval. The ruling is very new so we don’t have much in the way of examples or stories of it being applied. We do know that existing apps are on lots of devices and that hospitals have been doing lots of work around securing the acess to patient data around HIPAA regulations. We can introduce you to a number of technologies that help with this.

That means that, aside from having lots of opportunities to meet people and invite them for adult beverages, we will be able to promote our RIM-related LinkedIn group, the BES Admin Alliance (http://linkd.in/fEnPk0)

This should be a very exciting year for both RIM and Vox Mobile. We expect some announcements from RIM between now and the show and we will be making a number of announcements ourselves – some of which will center around the Playbook, RIM’s new tablet. With so many BES out there, dutifully standing solid, we expect a lot of organizations will find it easiest to endorse enterprise Apps running on the Playbook.
