TREND WATCH SP10: Tulle

TULLE

Tulle might be most commonly associated with wedding dresses, but designers have worked the netting into the clothing items for their spring collections. I'm a fan of this trend because I associate tulle with softness and femininity, two things that I usually go for when creating my summer look.

Gianmarco Lorenzi 'suede platform sandals'

I DARE YOU TO TELL ME THAT THIS SHOE ISN'T HOT. Lorenzi is one of the best shoe designers I've come across; his designs are the epitome of creativity and strong femininity.

When you see a shoe like this you instantly think "I want!" But while it makes your heart skip a beat with desire, it also makes you anxious as you panic about what to wear with it. I would wear them with more muted colors with the shoe because the shoe should speak louder than anything else I'm wearing (perhaps it could tie with my handbag.) When I'm walking down the street the first thing you should notice are the shoes, not the other bright or crazily designed clothing items that I've paired them with.

I'd wear the shoes with the following:

I think the tank is by Kain. It was on sale at net-a-porter.com but it's no longer available.

The cardigan isn't a muted color, however, I don't see it taking away from the shoes. I probably wouldn't even wear, just bring it along in case it becomes chilly. If you love this look but want a more affordable price. Madewell is a store that has a variation of the cardigan available every season, usualy costing about $50-70 (Madewell is located at Tysons Corner and Annapolis Mall if you live in the DC metropolitan area). I have a black cardigan from Madewell that looks pretty much like the Bottega Veneta one. As far as the pants, I've seen trouser pants in Urban Outfitters and on their website and I've seen a pair of Calvin Klein trousers at Bloomindale's, and I believe they were $98 (they didn't have my size unfortunately). The tank, of course, you can find almost anywhere.

Louis Vuitton 'Artsy' Bag

This is a new shoulder bag from Louis Vuitton and LV sales associates don't know how long it will be in production. I hope it earns permanency with LV because it really is a nice bag. I first saw it in person at Louis Vuitton Bloomingdales and instantly loved it. The MM bag is a nice size bag for those like me who like big bags (18.1" x 12.6" x 9.4"). I suggest the PM only if you like really big bags (19.7" x 14.1" x 9.8"). The pluses for me are the shape and that it is actually pretty structured unlike most bohemian style bags (I hate bags that flop or "deflate" when the stuffing is removed). The only negative is that it has no closure. The bag seems more of a fall bag to me so hopefully it's still around then because that's when I'd it purchase it.

L.A.M.B. 'Faith' Heel

How could anyone choose one color? I love this shoe not only because of the design, but because it can dressed up or down and worn with any color. Three or four times I've purchased the same shoe in more than one color, and this would be that kind of purchase, however.........it's SOLD OUT at heels.com and I can't find it anywhere. If you come across it let me know!

My first words were "so cute!" That is the one of the most attractive shades of pink, and would compliment any skin tone. The tie waste is also a plus for women since it accentuates the waist and will provide a slimming effect for most. I love the strong shoulders and how it drapes upwards at the bottom. net-a-porter description:

It's shoes like this that make you apply for more credit cards. The heel is 6.5 inches which would have me surpassing my dream height of 5' 5" (I'm 4' 11"). Tulle seems to be a trend this spring, as many designers are using it for shoes and dresses. These shoes would look great with the Preen dress. Peep the sister show below.

Footless Socks: A 2010 trend?

Footless socks were seen on the runway for Prada's Fall 2007 RTW collection, and now they have resurfaced in Alexander Wang's Spring 2010 RTW fashion show (show in above picture). This isn't a new or popular trend, but it is an interesting one. If I had to rate this trend on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it a 6. I do love the look in the above picture, but the trend isn't my style. Great looks can be created with footless socks, but I think they only add to an outfit when worn with certain types of shoes. Plus, I see many people wearing the look in the most unappealing way.

Footless socks look best when worn with booties (as shown above) or shoes that have thick straps/bands that go across the ankle (as shown to the left). I'm not fond of them with mary jane style shoes or with pumps. Wearing them with pumps in particular will create the flashdance look, which is a fun look, but won't result in a chic outfit.

Purchasing footless socks won't be easy as finding them has been impossible. American Apparel carried them around the time of Prada's Fall 2007 fashion show but has since then stopped selling them. Obviously the trend hasn't picked back up enough for them to be available for retail yet. Time will tell.

If you want to exercise your creative side a bit you can always make a pair.

One word: GORGEOUS. Both the shape and pattern of the bag are very unique and the vibrant color palette is perfect for the spring/summer, and even the fall. I'd leave the house if only just to show off the bag.

This is the best version of a birdcage platform that I've seen so far this spring. The heel is 5 1/2 inches which will make you a GLAMAZON. I tried these on at Nordstrom a couple of weeks ago and they are definitely FIERCE. I didn't purchase them because the shoe is kind of chunky and I felt as if my ankles and legs are too skinny (though the salesperson told me that they looked great on me, but isn't that their job?). While I didn't buy them, I do however HIGHLY recommend them! The shoe isn't available on Nordstrom.com or on jessicasimpsoncollection.com so you'll have to call around to find it. It is available on endless.com, but only in sizes 5.5, 7.5, and 8.

I love the mixing of prints in this set. Very few would dare to wear such a combination. Yellow is what really links the pieces, however every color of the handbag goes with the yellow or black of the dress. That icy blue on the handbag comes out of nowhere, but it's a pleasant surprise; a little randomness never hurts.

TREND WATCH SP10: Mixed Prints

Mixing Prints

Mixing prints is definitely not a new concept, but it is a daring one for many because you can so easily get it wrong and end up looking like the the star attraction for Barnum & Bailey Circus.

To try mixing prints you need an open mind and an attitude of disregard for the opinions of others. Sometimes only a few may appreciate the mixture, and sometimes none, but regardless, YOUR personal style should be first and foremost!

Tips & Tricks

1. The key to mixing patterns is SCALE. For the best effect, mix patterns of the same scale, or for a bigger bang, mix large scale patterns with small scale patterns.

2. Mix patterns that contain colors in the same color family, or that have the same dominate color.

3. To take a bit of an easier route, mix patterns in the same genre, for example, floral patterns.

4. Mix patterns that have that share a common theme. The above picture of Solange Knowles is a good example.

4. Unsure of what patterns to mix? Start with the most common patterns, such as florals, stripes, and checked patterns.

5. For another easier route, mix garment patterns with shoe patterns (or details).

All things Black is the focus of Vogue Black, a branch off from Vogue that not only pays homage to legendary and today's rising Black models, but also to all things black in film, music, and popular culture.

There is a particularly interesting article on the allure of uunsi, an African incense used by women. I'll be asking one of my African American friends more about that one!

Now for my downside about the site.

The launch of the Vogue Black site seems like a step in the right direction, however I'm a little unsettled. The whole thing is feeling a little "separate but equal." Why couldn't appreciation for Blacks in the fashion industry, particularly black models and celebrity fashion icons just be incorporated into the regular Vogue Site? I'm not completely opposed to the idea of the site, however the site's credibility will dwindle if appreciation for multicultural beauty still isn't seen on the regular Vogue site, and most importantly in Vogue magazine issues abroad.

I was not impressed with the site. The site is not appealing and seemed a little helter skelter, and very much a sophomoric attempt at web design. It's just very blah. Check it out for yourselves and let me know.

The site pays homage to old and new Black models in the fashion industry, and currently namely the ones pictured above.

Thank God for Essence

For those of you who were upset after reading Posh's post on Vanity Fair's March 2010 cover, you'll be happy to know that Essence Magazine has an article on Black Women In Hollywood in their March 2010 issue, which is on newsstands now! In the issue, they feature Zoe Saldana as a "Star to Watch" and Gaby Sidibe as "Best Breakthrough Performance". I think both titles are extremely fitting for these two bright, young stars. If you are interested in reading more about the women they spotlight, go out and purchase this issue of Essence. Essence Magazine is always filled with interesting articles that cater specifically to black women; we should support those who support us.

Also, read Gaby and Zoe's comments regarding the Vanity Fair controversy and let us know what you think:

Gaby: “Was I satisfied? Yeah, well… I mean, I come from a world where I’m not on covers and I’m not in magazines at all. And so I was happy to be in the magazine. people are so eager to carve out a style 'niche' when they could be exploring ...

refuse to be categorized into a box

Style is subjective, you don't have to be everyone's cup of tea

or be something you are not...

People place so much emphasis on mass appeal..

'Just 'cause everybody likes it don't make it cool'

Cool is what you make it

I like style contradictions

I wanna see rockstars in urban clothes

i wanna see rappers in hipster clothes

i wanna see preps in grungy clothes

mixed and matched to the individual's style sensibilities..

Not the 'new' or 'next' anybody just you...

Who says it has to be perfect

Who says it has to match

Why should it appear to make sense all so someone can 'love it'

I have a profound respect for people who express themselves without compromise

that's why i opt for Street Style instead of Runway

I appreciate the allure of regular people doing 'them'

In this culture where people 'DIE' over thousand dollar shoes

it is refreshing to see the antithesis of that ... it is the girl you want to be, the girl without a stylist, who probably charity shopped her entire outfit but still exude that 'thing'..that's what pumps my heart, not images of couture dresses that most people will never afford .

I like to see people, not the people they are dressed as, if i wanted to see another Rhianna i will look at the real one....lets leave the 'literal flattery' for costume parties or haloween...

My response:
I love it! I think it's so important for people to know that fashion and style are so entirely different, and that dressing the way YOU want, the way that materializes you're personality, and even ur beliefs, is what's important. I've seen people whose outfits I would NEVER wear and whose style is so different than mine but I couldn't stop looking at them because how they were dressed was so unique and it looked completely RIGHT on them, you could look at them and see that it fit their aura.

I especially love the part about rappers in hipster clothes. One of the most attractive things is to see a black male wearing something that the typical black male wouldn't, especially hipster or rockstar clothes (lets not forget those nerds with swag!). I love when a a guy can step out of the box that society, his culture, and more immediately, his friends, tell him that he belongs in and should stick to.

I must say I am a fan of runway fashions, particularly the more creatively done pieces that are more artistic than functional. But indeed, sometimes it is like, who can actually afford those prices?! LOL

TREND WATCH SP10: Acid Wash

Sometimes you need to know if what you were a season or two ago is still cool to be wearing now, and I'm happy to see that acid wash is starting to appear again for the spring. It's one of my favorite trends and it's such a different look from the jeans we've gotten so used to wearing (destroyed, embellished, and paint splattered, and whiskered denim). I've seen acid wash jeans in some very nice colors in Urban Outfitters, unfortunately they're not available on the website (which is weird). The jeans came in navy blue and purple acid wash. I'm hoping to come across the purple again in my size. The purple looked kind of like these jeans:

If you haven't tried acid wash, I seriously suggest that you do! You might wonder "What in the hell would I wear with acid wash jeans?" but you can wear with everything you were wearing with the jeans already in your closet (I am speaking a bit loosely, but you get the idea).

In the above picture I'm rocking some acid wash jeans with 80s color inspiration. The jeans are a blue acid wash and I wore them with EVERYTHING. The color, print, and material of whatever else I wore (top, jacket, etc.) doesn't matter.

And if you're going to get a pair...

GET THEM IN COLOR!

Do not be afraid to take risks and step outside boxes. As I've said before fashion is more than trends, allow all aspects of your personality to be reflected in your style! If your fun-loving and have even the smallest crazy side, then some acid wash jeans are right up your alley. Just be sure to properly pair colors and accessorize so that you don't end looking like an adolescent...unless you are an adolescent (no offense...).

I recently purchased these in grey from forever 21:

Heavy Mineral Skinny Jeans / $29.80 / Forever 21

Shown in blue, also available in grey.

They're a bit different than regular acid wash.* They don't look nearly as cheap in the store as they look online. They have a very forgiving fit and feel more like leggings than jeans.

*Acid wash is more streak-y and has more places where the original color of the jeans is completely washed out by the acid wash. Mineral wash is more pebble-y/grainy, if that makes any sense at all. The difference is obvious when you view for Forever 21 jeans in comparison to the Siwy jeans at the beginning of the post.

For those who have not been paying attention to the news or blogosphere lately, former presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth have legally separated. When I first heard this, I knew I had to write about it. Before I start, let me give you a little background information on what has been going on with these two. From my understanding Elizabeth has cancer and John cheated on her after he already knew of her diagnosis. He fathered a love child with his mistress, which he initially denied, and allegedley there's a sex tape out of him and the other woman. To top all that off, there are rumors that John may have put his hands on Elizabeth!

John Edwards is not the first politician to cheat on his wife, nor is he the first (or last) man to betray his wife. Elizabeth, though, is one of the few wives in the political spotlight to leave. Why is that? Why is it that women stay in bad relationships?

From my 20 something years of observing women in unhealthy relationships I've come up with three of the most popular reasons why women remain in them: Comfort, insecurity/fear, and "for the kids". In some ways all three of these reasons tend to feed off of each other. At times when a woman becomes comfortable in a relationship her vision gets cloudy and it becomes hard for her to see herself with anyone else. If the relationship turns from good to bad, she may endure it because she is fearful of being alone or because she feels she can't do any better. This leads her to make excuses like, "I need to stay with him for the kids." What we, as women, need to realize is that we don't need a no good man for anything! Question is, how do we come to realize that?

First thing's first, KNOW YOUR WORTH!!! You have to understand that you matter. If the man in your life doesn't recognize that then get rid of him...plain and simple! Next, you have to open your eyes and let yourself see what you've been refusing to pay attention to. Learn how to differentiate between good and bad by trusting your gut. Nothing I'm saying is new. The same thing has been said in many different ways before, but the dialogue won't get old until more women follow the lead of Elizabeth Edwards and others like her.

I could go on and on about this topic, and perhaps I'll do a Part II on this subject, but for now I just want to get a conversation going. Why do you think women are so prone to remaining in unhealthy relationships?

Before reading below please read this article: Vanity Fair's "New Hollywood" Issue Completely Lacks Diversity"

This is absolutely ridiculous. There isn't much more for me to say that the author of the article hasn't already pointed out. This article says to me: "Hey, don't worry! Non-whites won't be rising too much in Hollywood, there's still enough young, white tail on the come up." ......... Oh yes, I'm definitely "riled up."

A few of the young women definitely deserve their spot in the issue (Kristin Stewart, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Emma Stone, maybe even Evan Rachel Wood) but at the moment, who really gives a shit about Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowski, Carey Mulligan, and Anna Kendrick? From reading their bios in the Vanity Fair article (and reading elsewhere), I was not impressed. There was nothing deserving of the title "New Hollywood." Now granted there aren't as many young and up-and-coming women of color in Hollywood (the article focused on the 19-27 age range), but there's still NO excuse for this rubbish. I feel a little bad for basically bashing these young ladies' careers, but that's not really what I'm trying to do. I'm just saying that there should have been a more DIVERSE selection, especially when there are young women of color who are just as deserving, if not more, of the spotlight.

I'd like to point out that when I visited VF's online site one of the first things I noticed was an advertisement to join. The issue used in the advertisement was the the one that had President Barack Obama on the cover. Oh the irony.

The women of color who could have been featured:

America Ferrara (Latina)

There really is not need for an explanation here. She's my number one contender for someone who should have been in the VF article.

Her 2002 performance in HBO's "Real Women Have Curves" was spectacular.
She has starred in the very successful Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants films
She is the star of the very popular tv show "Ugly Betty"
She has a new movie coming out called "Our Family Wedding"
Last but not least in her accomplishments, she has received awards, which many if not all of the young ladies in the vanity fair issue have NOT received
And tell me if this makes sense: Blake Lively, who was mentioned in a similar issue Vanity Fair last year, also starred in the Sisterhood movies and has been a major character on the tv series Gossip Girl since it began in 2008). So as you can see, America and Blake are matched in that area. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE: If you check IMDb (Internet Movie Database) America's career FAR outshines Blake's and also many of the ladies who are in the issue. Something in the milk ain't CLEAN...WHY WASN'T AMERICA IN THE ISSUE?!

Zoe Saldana (Hispanic - Puerto Rican/Dominican)

Zoe has been around for years. I think the movie most of us remember her first starring in is Center Stage. She's also starred on Law & Order twice, and worked alongside big names such as Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher. I think the Star Trek movies really boosted her career, and of course this year's Avatar will help her go further still. Her career is really beginning to take off. She has several movies lined up according to IMDb. One thing I love about Zoe is that she is very expressive in her acting. (Zoe is 29 so she's two years older than the oldest person in the VF article, I don't know if her age would have disqualified her or not.)

Gabourey Sidibe (Black)

Although she only recently made her debut in Hollywood by starring in the movie "Precious", the publicity alone from the movie and her stellar performance in the film should have gotten her in the article. 'Nuff said. If she's good enough grace the cover of V magazine and have a featured article in Harper's Bazaar, then dammit she's good enough for Vanity Fair! Would seeing her amongst those thin white girls look a little odd? Yes, but only because we're not using to seeing thick black girls alongside thin white ones. Zoe Kravitz (Black - mixed black/white)

Her career isn't much to brag about yet but neither is Anna Kendrick who was in the VF article. Oh, and let's not forget that in 2009 Zoe was crowned the new face of Vera Wang Princess. (Sidenote: Zoe may be mixed with more than just black and white)

Keke Palmer (Black)

Had she been in the article she would have been the youngest (she's 16). Keke is one word: AMAZNG! She has starred in movies alongside big names in Hollywood such as Lawrence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and Ice Cube. She is the star of a VERY successful tv show "True Jackson, VP!" which is going to be a movie very soon, and she also sings and is supposed to have a CD out in the near future. When looking at her career, she could easily stand up to any of the VF girls. Unfortunately, I think that people might call the movies she has been in "black films," but they weren't like Baby Boy or The Cookout type of films (obviously since Fishburne and Bassett were in them).

And now I'm going to advocate for someone who is not a woman of color, but is an amazing actress and has starred in some really good movies.

Ellen Page

I heart this chick! Initially I thought they might not have included her in the article because she's kind of quirky, but then again, so is Kirsten Stewart! So I really don't understand why she wasn't included in the article, yet Anna Kendrick was (whose claim to fame is playing a FRIEND of Bella Swann in the Twilight movies, ugh). Excluding her is RUBBISH! Ellen Page was Juno for crying out loud (which I think will become a cult classic). And as many of the young ladies mentioned before her, her career is equal to or outshines the ladies mentioned in the VF article (she's been in multiple movies and worked with Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Garner, and Sarah Jessica Parker to name a few).

I suggest you go to IMDb and view the work of the ladies in the VF article and the ones I suggested.

TREND WATCH SP10: Oxford Flats

A classic look that has made a much deserved comeback. This trend started earlier this fall in the US, but it hasn't caught on as much as it should have, which is why I'm posting on it. It's such a casual look, yet it has more "umph", if you will, then say...regular ballet flats. For those of who you prefer a boyish twist to your feminine look, or more of a European flare, oxfords are right up your alley.

TREND WATCH: Wiggle Hem Dresses

Looking for a fun way to glam up a simple look? Try a wiggle hem dress; as seen above on two of my fav fashionistas Solo and Rih Rih. I wasn't quite sure what to call this trend at first, but I found a similar dress on asos.com and saw that they named it wiggle hem so I stole that and I'm sticking with it.

Something Old, Something New

They say "you don't know where you're going if you don't know where you're coming from." I never thought this adage would apply to fashion. It's wonderful to purchase something new and fresh that's in style, but what's even better is when you find something from decades ago that embodies everything that is now, the history behind the garment turns into a keepsake and in your heart it will never go out of style. (Plus, you can save a bundle!)

During a recent visit to a relative's house my cousin showed me this baby that her mother wore in the 80s:

I fell IN LOVE with it! So 80s...so Samantha from Sexy and the City (the movie)...so in current with the sleeves and pleated tail. My goal is to find something like this and have it tailored. I've never vintage shopped or thrifted but I think that I've really missed out on that aspect of fashion. Everything doesn't always have to be brand-spanking new to be fashionable, that's what alterations and reconstruction is for. And any true fashionista knows that there is a difference between being fashionable, and being trendy and stylish.

Sidebar about the pleated tail in the above picture: When I was looking for my winter coat I knew that I wanted something that I wouldn't see on anybody else and so I went to asos.com (read previous post to learn more about this site) because they also have styles that aren't widely available, or at all, in the states, and for much cheaper. I purchased the below coat:

I've gotten tons of compliments on it (oddly enough it's a huge hit with guys, go figure) and "where did you get it?" questions. Perk: I tell them where I got it from and they give me looks...perhaps because saying "asos.com, it's European website" sounds a bit snobbish?).

ASOS.COM is an awesome site for purchasing well made current trends for a reasonable price. They literally have HUNDREDS of selections and they also carry petite sizes and some brand names. One perk of the site is that 98% of their clothing have videos have models wearing the clothes on the runway so you can see the items in motion. They even have 4 day express shipping to the USA for only $12 dollars. BUT, be careful when ordering from this site because clothes are in European sizes, which can greatly differ from sizes you in the states. I usually wear a small, but had to order a medium, which are sizes 6 and 10 in Europe, and surprisingly enough I had to send the 6 back for a 10! The 6 fit everywhere but was too tight in the chest area for me because I am a little too blessed in the boob region. The only downfall of the site is that you have to pay return shipping and handling fees yourself, but there is a chance of reimbursement, mainly if the item is faulty or if the sent the wrong item.

Can We Talk: We're More Than Fashion!

A couple of days ago I was reading the February 2010 issue of Marie Claire, and after I finished I felt overwhelmed. I had gone through such a mixture of emotions and feelings while reading the issue. Initially, I felt only excitement about the clothes, shoes, accessories that I viewed that are going to inspire and elevate my spring/summer wardrobe. There were shoes that took my breath away, dresses that I could live in for weeks, and accessories that made me seriously try to rationalize why I, a graduate school student, should be fine with spending $1000 on single pieces of couture costume jewelry. In contrast, by the end of the issue I felt sad, smarter, more aware, and empowered. My initial feelings need no further explanation but I'm sure you're wondering why I was experiencing the later emotions. Well, as I finished the reading the magazine I realized that for perhaps the second time in my life that magazines geared towards fashion are soooooo much more than look books into the coming season's trends. Fashion magazines provide style AND awareness.

In this single issue of Marie of Claire I was sad because I was touched by an article written by a woman who has struggled with PTSD and depression due to the brutal murder of her sister when she was an adolescent. You just never know what people are struggling with and that some wounds, especially when left untreated, can take years to heal.

I became smarter after reading the article on Lori Gottlieb's, who authored Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough, written to make sure that women know the difference between being too picky and settling (because all of the attention and chasing that occurs in your 20s won't be around in your 40s!).

I was more aware after reading the article on a product that women can use to appear to still be virgins. This product is geared towards women living in countries like Egypt, Syria, and followers of Islam. As many of you know, virginity is very sacred in certain countries and in Islam, and if a woman does not bleed on her wedding night she will be believed to not be a virgin, and the consequences for that can include being beaten or killed. The product is inserted into the woman's vagina and adheres to the cervix. During sex it's punctured and a blood-like fluid is released so that the sheets can be stained, as the woman's hymen as been broken for the first time.

I was empowered after reading an article on Marine Corps Sergeant Ronda Porter, a tough as nails drill/sergeant instructor who is highly respected in her profession. At work she's the bitch you love to hate, and who you probably think is a lesbian who hates all men, but outside of her job she is happily married (her husband is also in the marines) and loves to dress very feminine. She's rough and tough, but she maintains her highlights and is an advocate for lip gloss. A woman who can intimidate men until they're in tears and physically sick all while her lip gloss is poppin...now that's a F***in lady!

I was also empowered by the magazine issue as a whole. People think that women who care a lot about fashion don't care about much else, especially important and global issues, and of course THIS IS NOT TRUE! Just because speaking about my newest designer handbag crush gives me butterflies, doesn't mean my mind is far from what really matters in life or what's going on in the world. It doesn't mean that I'm an airhead, that all of my money is spent on clothes and looking good, or that I'm living in bubble. Can't I can have my Tory Burch satchel AND still discuss world affairs and advocate for human rights? I'm quite sure I can! And as all true fashionistas know, fashion is about more than just clothes, trends and style, it is also about self-expression, independence, and art.

Sidenote 1: Over a year ago I was on a date and the guy actually said that the more well dressed and stylish a woman looks, the more likely she is to not know how to save, or is in debt, and/or can't afford to live on her own (as in have her own place). And since I am definitely not a shabby dresser I immediately took offense since his philosophy basically applied to me. I set him straight and of course that was the first and LAST date (it was overall a wack date in anyway). Fashionista does not equate to being broke, just as it does not equate to being an airhead or unaware of what's going on in the world.

Sidenote 2: It's funny, but I really don't know how it came to be that I have been receiving Marie Claire for free for the past four or five months. I must have won some sort of contest but I don't remember!
