I just came across this neat Flash Lite file that transforms the S60 devices into an iPhone for all those of you who like the slick interface. It is not compatible with Flash Lite 3 but runs smoothly on the inbuilt Flash application. It is great to use as a screensaver also. However certain icons such as YouTube do not perform the corresponding task.

Please note that it is stretched and jerky due to the software that was used to record the video and youtube. The application runs smoothly otherwise. To use just copy the .swf to (C/E):/Others and run using the flash application.

I would also like to take this space to present to you a application called Smart Control that lets you take a video of the phone along with the usual Screenshots. Pretty neat. The above video was captured using it, the video prior to youtube uploading is not stretched! Here’s how the company markets the product:

“smartControl is used to display a smartphone’s screen on a PC or video projector in realtime. It is also possible to control the phone using a PC keyboard or mouse. This is especially useful in presentations and demonstrations.

Rita has probably made the find of the year! She’s just found Nokioteca, the homeland of all glorious Italian themers like Jendell, Ivanov, Giambi, Gnokkia, Babi, Pasco, Pizero, Luca and Lillium to name a few! Whether you are a theme freak or someone like me who just likes clean, plain and polished themes its a must visit.

Its has been 24 hours since the N96 has been leaked and it has managed to generate quite a bit of buzz around the web. I saw the news yesterday but had an exam in the morning so couldn’t really spend time on the device. Since then I have a lot of questions in my mind, even had them bothering me while I was writing the exam! But lets start with what we know about the device or at least think we know:

– Music Centered Device based on the N81-N95 combine.
– A 5MP Camera with dual LEDs and no lens cover.
– Feature Pack 2.
– 2.6/2.8″ Screen. ( I hope is 2.8″)
– All features of the N95 and the audio quality of the N91 plus noise cancellation and 16GB storage may be.
– A provision to make it stand for video consumption.
– A card slot for even more memory!
– More shots of the device here.

Now here’s what I think.

Looks:

I really like the phone, nevermind the gloss. I liked the N81 too but the 2mp cam was a big put off. I still want to gets my hands on the N81, specially after the next N9x is going to be modelled on it!

Construction:

– This is always a tricky part for the Nseries, in one picture I can already see a gap between the slide which may make the device rattle! (Top Right) But if Nokia  can get this right, wow! I’m a fan of sliders and this one will be especially cool.

– The little stand that makes the phone stand up ‘somewhat’ is a joke. It will not be able to make the phone stand at an angle of more than 60 degree or somewhere near-about so I will still need to bend to watch the phone, quite pointless IMO.

– The loudspeakers look decent and they might just be four in number! One on all sides, now that’ll be fun! [Update: Two only]

– The camera review key is gone, I had got used to it but never-mind.

– The dual slide is somewhat of a mystery as the dedicated audio buttons already exist. The explanation is that it is for gaming. But a close look at the photo reveals that there is no button which will offer tactile feedback, something which is essential in gaming. The area looks LG chocolate like.

Other Features:

– Rumour has it that it might just support DVB-H also. I see that as point less, Nokia knows what happened to the N92 and N77. Plus today it is no longer about TV anymore. A lot of countries all over the world do not even support it.

Questions:

Now this is the single biggest question in my mind. Why is it a N9x? Traditionally the ‘9’ series is reserved for something that hasn’t been done before. The N90 was a revolutionary camera phone, N91 music, N92 TV, N93 video, N95 GPS. So what does the N96 have to be an 9 series? Surely FP2 is not reason enough, gaming too cannot be it, music is already taken, camera it cannot be! So why?
I beleived the next 9 would be the phone with touch UI and not what we see. If Nokia is hiding something like a mini projector in it then great, else it would be a waste of a N9x!

Opinion:

Continuing from where I left off, if this is how the N96 pans out, minus something cutting edge, I don’t see it as an upgrade for someone with an N95. There are not a huge lot of people who will be willing to upgrade for the 16GB memory and the music. By the time this thing hits the shelves it will be an anniversary for the N95, yet they will be no upgrade in sight!

PS: The shots seem to have been taken with either a N95-2 or N95-3! Look at the reflection!

For the other devices too, such as the N82, N81 and the others with decent ammount of RAM already, multiple windows on high speed wifi/3G connections is something practical. There are two methods I have been using to open multiple windows, here’s a rundown of both of them.

Using the Web Feeds Option

– Launch the browser and open a website as you normally would.

– Goto the web feeds option in the bookmarks and open any feed you may have subscribed to. (If not then simply goto a website of your choosing which has a feed, press the Left Softkey and select Subsribe and the name of the feed. It will then show up in your list of feeds and just refresh it once.)

– Now open any post from that feed and select the “Full Article” option. This will open the post in a new window.

– Simply stop the page from loading and proceed to open any site you wish to.

– To switch between open windows, just press ‘5’ and use the navi pad to select.

A maximum of 5 windows can be opened this way. This is probably the most convenient way of opening multiple windows.

Using the Template

A friend of mine sent me this .htm file which can be used to open new windows. Just set it as you homepage from the settings in the browser and click on the “Open a new window” link to open upto a maximun of 5 windows. It also features direct Google search field and a goto box.

– To set this up, copy the file to E:/Others with a file manager or any way you choose.

– Lauch the browser and select Options>Bookmarks>Add a Bookmark.

– In the address type “file://localhost/e:/others/NewWindow.htm” and save the bookmark.

– Load the bookmark, goto Settings>General>Homepage and select use current.

 Thats it, next time you load the browser this will be displayed. You can also press ‘9’ for the default goto option which remembers history.

Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz has released the first version of emTube, a freeware YouTube client application and FlashVideo player. emTube allows you to browse (by search, by featured video, by top rated videos and by most viewed videos), view and download YouTube videos or play back a locally stored file. Rafe from over at AAS has all the details.

emTube is an application for Symbian S60 3rd edition phones that allows you to:

– Search and browse videos on YouTube.
– Download selected videos onto your phone.
– Stream FlashVideo files directly from YouTube.
– Play local FlashVideo files.

Other features:

– Audio and position control during playback.
– Normal and full screen (portrait and landscape mode) video playback.
– Ability to use built in accelerometer to rotate video between portrait/landscape mode.

Glide comes with all the essentials built-in such as Office applications Write (Word-like) and Present (Powerpoint-like), blog publishing, music, video players, and photos viewer with alternate thumbnail view support that makes you feel that it’s a complete OS. A toned down version of all of these accessible from the phone.

Although the main site in in flash, the registration link works well in the S60 browser and I was able to register from the mobile itself. Glide supports a various mobile operating systems. After logging in this was the screen I got.

Various everyday applications like email, calender, contacts, bookmarks, chat, photos, videos that are integral to us are also here. The free account gives 2GB worth of storage for any files you may want to upload.

Documents

The on mobile Documents applications lets us create & save documents and download, if needed. It even allows editing and exporting the document to a variety of formats.

Music

But what really caught my eye was the streaming option. They have some featured content ready to stream and plus we can stream any of the music we uploaded. Same with videos! I am considering using the 2GB entirely for this purpose. Having instant access to my music anywhere from almost any device is great.

Photos

The archive for photos is also impressive! It gives you the ability to apply effects to your images on the fly and there are loads of effects to choose from.

Contacts, Calender & Bookmarks

Once you import all your contacts over, it works really well. Options to edit and download the contact as a vCard also exist. Import of Contacts and calendar from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, the Windows Address book, and your bookmarks from Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox is supported. You can also add any of these online too.

The above are just a few of the features I have been able to try and too not compltely as I wanted to share this as soon as possible. Its 5:30 in the morning and I haven’t slept all night, so in case this looks messed up please bear with me.

The practical utility of such a service is questionable, but one thing for sure, what it does it, does really well. There are somethings the limited processing power of the phones cannot do and here is a service that can supplement them well. It is definately worth a shot. Do share your experiences.

Unwired view has just brought to light this new Nokia triple slide patent called called “A layered mobile device”, which has a dedicated QWERTY keyboard, T9 keys and dedicated multimedia control keys. With the Nseries already not really known for build quality I have serious doubts about this device considering the sheer ammount to moving parts. But if Nokia can get the build quality on this thing right, boy we’d have one hell of a ‘multimedia computer’.

There’s nothing to say that this is going to be a Nseries device, but the multimedia keys sure make it seem like one. Ricky has been wanting a Nseries QWERTY, may be this is it?

S60 wizard Samir has officially released the rotateME beta 5 for the general public! It is one of the most widely awaited applications ever and is compatible with the N95, N95 8GB and the N82 while a special version for N80, N73, E65, N81 is in the works.

Beta 5 brings a world of improvements, the biggest for me is the ability to hide the application from the default task manager! This is something I really wanted as it makes the experience complete, it is as if the rotate functionality comes inbuilt! The options to adjust sensitivity and reactivity work well and allow you to control the angle of tilt at which the screen rotates. The auto start option is also present. All in all a complete package. Wonderful work from a great man! Cheers to you mate! In case you can spare it, donate Samir a few PayPal dollars.

For those new to RotateMe, it is a freeware application which allow you to switch your phone screen from portrait to landscape and vice versa with just a tilt. Here’s rotateMe in action.

Installation Instructions: 

– Don’t forget to install N95AccelerometerPlugin.sis

– Sign the included .sis file and install.

To rotate the screen, keep this application opened and rotate the phone.

You can disable the rotation by pressing simultaneously Pen and Camera keys.

To close rotateMe go to Options -> Exit.

Here’s what the settings allow us to do:

Sensitivity: More sensitivity is set to a high value, more the display will rotate with a minor needing of rotation of the phone.

Reactivity: More this setting is low and more you have to keep your phone in landscape/portrait position to rotate the screen.

Auto Start: Enable this setting to launch rotateMe automatically at the phone boot.

Inactivity Delay: After this delay of inactivity, auto-rotation will be stopped. Press a key, or unlock the keypad, to reactivate auto-rotation.

Priority: High priority allows a better reactivity when big apps are launched. 

System App: When activated, this setting prevents rotateMe to be closed by the OS in low RAM conditions. 

Hidden App: Enable this setting to hide rotateMe from the tasks list.

Note: If you enable “Hidden App.” or “System App.” you will not be able to close rotateMe from tasks list.

Anuj from the Nokia N95 Community on Orkut reports that the Nokia Map Loader has been updated to version 1.3 and the maps have also got an update. While the Indian map data has only increased from 19.7 MB to 21.1 MB, China it seems has gotten a big upgrade and is now upto 190 MB. In case you spot a change, do drop a comment.
