This is it, hollidays over, back to work again !

To begin softly and nicely, let's have a look on Morfiki's Redu(p)cer
A strange name for a realy nice plugin !
It's light, easy to use, and most of all, it sounds. That's my favourite trio hehe.
Unlike many other beatcruchers and sonic destructors, whatever you make with it, it keeps a real musicality. I mean, you'll never had an unusable sound, and it's quite fat as a bonus.

The biggest free classical instruments soundbank ever !

The university of Iowa, thanks to Lawrence Fritts, created in 1997 an instrument samples database that didn't stop growing since.

All the samples are pro recorded, in aiff format, 16 bit 44.1 khz.

Tons of samples, several GBs, believe me, you won't find this anywhere on the web, even if you pay for it ;)

Here are the technical specs of the recording :

The instruments were recorded in the Anechoic Chamber in the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center at The University of Iowa on the following equipment:

• Neumann KM 84 Cardioid Condensor Microphone
• Mackie 1402-VLZ Mixer

• Panasonic SV-3800 DAT Recorder

The recordings were digitally transferred to Macintosh Power PC 8500 though a Digidesign Audiomedia III interface (1997-1999) or to a Macintosh G4 through a Digidesign Digi-001 digital interface (2000-present).

The recordings were edited into soundfiles in Digidesign Sound Designer II (1997-1999) or Bias Peak (2000-present) consisting chromatic scales at three non-normalized dynamic levels, pp, mf, ff.

Each note is approximately 2 seconds long and is immediately preceded and followed by ambient silence.

Some instruments are recorded with and without vibrato. String instrument recordings include arco (bowed) and pizzicato (plucked). The only non-anechoic instrument is the piano, which was recorded in a small faculty teaching

Here's another cool free sounds archive for our Soundbank week : It's called Universal Soundbank !

The name can seem a bit pretentious, but this one is really huge : more than 12.000 sounds, loops and effects, all classified and easy to access, of very various kinds :)

With the integrated flash players, you can quickly brwose the archive with the top menu, and right click on any samples to download them.

The sounds are in mp3 but seems to be high bitrate, so I think they are totally usable for music production.

Soundbank week day #3 : SampleSwap (free electronic loops, kits and samples)

Sampleswap is a cool database mostly dedicated to electronic musics (and derivates).

It features
"5.5 Gb of 100% free AIFF/WAV sounds, including 2,198 techno, hiphop, trance, and drum 'n' bass drum loops / breakbeats, 1,254 drum hits, 77 drum kits, 2,198 sound FX, 1,207 instrument sounds, 1,200 vocal samples, 1,047 melodic parts, fruity loops and more..."

These free samples are really great sounding !
You can browse to listen, but have to register (for free) in order to download the samples.

It is impossible to make a free soundbank week without talking about the Freesound project !

What's freesound ? A collaborative database of Creative Commons released sounds.
It feature any (really) kind of sounds, a powerful search engine, and lots of collaborative projects around. A super nice place to get and share sounds, as you can (recommended) also upload your own sounds as long as they are not copyrighted.

Okay, this is a new themed week, and this week's theme is (free) "Soundbanks" :)

For the first day, I choosed an audience sounds bank.
You'll tell me "having audience sound is something useless"...it is yep, until you need it and then... you lack it !
It's usually hard to find for free in good quality, hopefully, there's (at least) one place on the web : audiencesounds.com
All the sounds are royalty-free, and you can try them all with a funny button-interface before downloading (upper right tab "download").

Thanks to the creator of this page that can be useful for musicians, but also videogames and TV producers ;)

Shekrs : free VST yogurtpot and papercup shakers (not joking, lol)

Spacedad made some of the weirdest VSTs I've ever seen !
(but not THE weirdest, I keep some surprises for later hehe)

Shekrs is what it looks like, a groups of shakers made with recycled materials such as papercup or yogurtpot.
You've got speed, pitch and volume modulation controls, and five different shakers to play with using different midi notes.
Spacedad also had the kindness to include highpass and lowpass filters, distortion, bitcrushing and panning controls.

Shekrs est ce dont il a l'air : un set de shakers faits avec du materiel de récup, comme des gobelets en carton ou des pots de yahourt.
Vous disposez de 5 shakers différents, avec des réglages pour la vitesse, le pitch, et la modulation du volume, à jouer avec différentes notes midi.
Spacedad a aussi eu la gentillesse d'inclure des filtres passe-bas et passe-haut, une distortion, un bitcrusher et un réglage du paning.

Darbukator lite : Arabian vibes in your tracks ! (free VST ethnic drumbox)

Darbukator lite : free VST arabian drums player

Good sounding drums is something hard to achieve without using sequenced loops (or a real drummer of course).
The bad thing with audio loops is that you can barely modify them, that's why having midi sequences is great !

Darbukator lite (free version of HTT's Darbukator) offers a smart alternative : a drum sample player with some controls that comes with several midi patterns so that you can add arabian percussions to your tracks immediatly, or modifiy if you wish the midi loops. And you can of course start from blank and write your own tracks to make oriental-trash-metal :)
Darbukator lite offers 4 instruments with individual midi channels, separate audio outs, individual filter and gain, and a global ADSR.
Be sure to grab the MIDI expansion pack at the bottom of the screen when you download the VST ;)

Des percussions qui sonnent bien, c'est difficile à obtenir sans utiliser des boucles rythmiques (ou un vrai percussionniste bien sûr).
L'inconvénient des boucles rythmiques, c'est qu'on ne peut pas vraiement les modifier sauf au prix d'un travail de fourmi, ou à) moins d'avoir des séquences midi.

Darbukator lite (la version gratuite du Darbukator de chez HTT) propose une alternative intéressante : un lecteur de samples de percussions avec quelques controles, qui est livré avec plusieurs séquences midi, de sorte que vous pouvez les utiliser immédiatement, ou les modifier si besoin. Et vous pouvez bien sûr composer de zéro et écrire vos propres pistes.
Darbukator lite propose 4 instruments différents avec des canaux midi individuels, ainsi qu'un réglage du gain et du filtre par piste. Il y a aussi une enveloppe ADSR globale.
N'oubliez pas en plus du VST de télécharger le pack de boucles midi en bas de la page ;)

California sun : a free VST guitar combo that rocks the summer

California Sun : free Mesa-like VST guitar combo

This plugin sounds like summer !
Auraplug are providing great guitar plugins in their "Freestortion" serie.
The California sun is one of these. It emulates a guitar combo with the following features :
- Guitar Combo Amp design
- 2 channels, Clean and Dirty
- Level, Drive, Low and High controls
- Built-in Distortion, Amp and Cabinet Simulation
- Incredible Low-ends
- Low CPU usage (less than 2% on P! 2.4GHz)
- Easy to use

California Sun mimics a Mesa style amp, and one must say it sounds dirty !
I tried it on my guitar samples (yep, I'm no guitarist, at least not a good one ;) and it's very impressive.

Check out the other "Freestortion" plugins, they are all of great quality !

Voilà un VST qui sonne comme l'été !
Auraplug propose une chouette série de plugs gratuits appelés "Freestortion" dédiée à la guitare.
Le California sun est le dernier né de cette série, et il a les caractéristiques suivantes :
- un joli design (sisi, ça compte !)
- 2 cannaux : Clean & Dirty
- Réglages du Level, Drive, Low and High
- Simulation de Distortion, Amp & Cabinet
- Incredible Low-ends (ça se passe de traduction ;)
- Faible usage de la CPU (j'ai testé, en effet ça dépasse rarement 1 à 2% sur une machine de moins de 3 ans)
- Simple d'emploi

California Sun imite un ampli de type Mesa, et je dois dire que ça sonne "dirty" !
Je l'ai testé sur mes samples de guitare (oui je ne suis pas guitariste, ou du moins pas un bon ;) et je dois dire que c'est très impressionnant.

Ne ratez pas les autres plugs de la série "Freestortion", ils valent tous le détour !

X-cita : free VST analog style exciter

BaXXpander : free VST analog saturation / bass expander

These two plugins from ElogoXa are quite old, but I use them often and think you have to test them !
They are intended to be used for mixing/mastering purpose, but feel free to try your own way of using them, it can always deliver nice surprises ;)

X-cita is an analog style exciter, inspired by BBE famous "Sonic maximizer", and will help to add more precision to the high frequencies, and more density to the lowest. It works well on the master channel, but it's also valuable on rytmic, bass or keyboard tracks (this is my own opinion only ;)

BaXXpander is both saturator and bass expander, intended to be used on bass and rythmic parts. Works well on electronic and acoustic rythms, for the bass work it's more efficient on synthetic ones than acoustic & electric ones in my opinion.

Two nice and useful tools for the mixing / mastering stage !

Ces deux plugins de chez ElogoXa sont plutôt anciens, mais je les utilise souvent et je pense que vous devriez les tester si ce n'est déjà fait.
Ils sont conçus pour un usage de mixage/mastering, mais libre à vous de les détourner de cette utilisation, ce qui peut parfois révéler d'agréables surprises !

X-cita est un exciter de "type analogique", inspiré du célèbre "Sonic maximizer" de BBE, et il vous aidera à gagner en précision dans les hautes fréquences et en densité dans le bas du spectre. Il fonctionne bien sur le master, mais également sur des parties rythmiques, basses ou clavier (ce qui reste mon opinion et n'engage que moi ;)

BaXXpander est à la fois un saturateur et un bass expander, concçu pour traiter des pistes basse et rythmiques. Je le trouve particulièrement efficace sur les rythmiques acoustiques ou synthétiques, et les basses synthétiques (moins sur les basses acoustiques ou électriques).

Deux outils fort utiles et simples d'emploi pour le mixage et le mastering !

The Cygnus from outer space ! (free VST ambient synth)

Cygnus : a free VST powerful ambient fields generator !

This is the second time I review a plugin from Krakli, but they deserve it !
They have some jewels in their library, and Cygnus is one of them...

This plugin has a very special feature : it comes in two different versions, each one having its own GUI (Graphic interfaces) and some specific features.
As it's a synth dedicated to ambient and experimental sounds, we'll be more interested in the "Space" skinned version. This tricky kid has no really understandable controls, but it's the way it's intended to be ! You'll just let the hazard guide you thru the galaxies designs and click to modify the sound. A perfect approach of ambient / experimental synthesis, I liked it a lot :)
This is close to the spirit you can find in the musical softs Brian Eno collaborated in.
The "conventionnal" version is closer to the usual lead/pads/drone synth, even if it's as interesting as the other one.

Here are some mp3 demo I chosed from the plugin page :

- StarGzer S4 by Vurt
- The most improbable planet that ever existed by Bahgheera
(this one almost beat an old "The Orb" track name by the length ;)

You'll find on the plugin page the two versions of the VSt, tons of presets, and packs containing everything.

C'est la seconde fois que je chronique un plugin de Krakli, mais ils le méritent !
Ils ont dans leur catalogue quelques perles, et Cygnus en fait partie...

CE plugin a une particularité rare : il existe en deux versions, chacune ayant sa propre interface graphique et quelques spécificités.
Comme il s'agit d'un synthé orienté ambient/expérimental, je me suis plus intéressé à la version "Space".
Cette dernière est assez astucieuse et déroutante car son interface ne comporte pas vraiment de contrôles compréhensible, et est destinée à laisser errer sa souris au hasard des galaxies (voir photo) pour cliquer ou on le sent et faire évoluer le son.
Voilà une approche très intéressante qui correspond bien au genre musical et que j'ai appréciée :)
On y retrouve l'esprit ludique des softs auxquels a participé Brian Eno.
La version "Conventionnelle" eest plus proche de l'habituel synth" leads/pads/drones, mais est tout aussi intéressante.

Meowowwoww, this kitten modulates ! (free VST retro synth)

Felix : a cool free VST retro synth from the 80's

Kriminal like synths, and they like special ones !
They released a cool emulation of the rare 80's "The Kitten" synth, a powerfull monophonic one-oscillator machine that was quite famous in its time.
This emulation, named Felix (haha) offers this :

1 VCO (saw/tri/pulse) plus white noise generator
1 LFO - sine/square/S+H
2 SubOsc’s : square (-1 and -2 oct)
VCF - 4pole LP self oscillating filter
VCA - ADSR
200+ Presets

And I have to say it's quite strong for leads, fx and other kind of modulated sounds, so... mission accomplished ? I think yes ;)

Kriminal aime les synthés, avec une préférence pour ceux qui sont spéciaux !
Ils ont sorti une émulation d'un synthé rare des années 80, "The Kitten", un puissant clavier monophonique à un oscillateur qui fut assez fameux en son temps.

Chicago based "Groovemonkee" have the groove, and they share it !
This company is specialised into providing midi loops into a large number of formats (GM, Addictive Drums, BFD, BFD2, GURU, EZdrummer, Groove Agent, IMAP, Larry Seyer, Live Session Drums, Reason, Session Drummer, Superior Drummer...).
Over the years, they've worked with major companies surch as Cakewalk, FXpansion and LinPlug.
And now they share some of their catalogue for free ! And believe me, there is a lot of valuable midi loops you want to use in this free 500 midifiles pack.

Here is the list of the musical styles you'll find :

Quantum 64 : a free VST Commodore64 inspired instrument

There are several (good) Commodore64 "SID" soundchip emulations here, and you probably know them.
So I'll present you a quite old but still on-the-top instrument for me, the Quantum 64.
Quantum 64 is not really a SID emulation, but an instrument inspired by the wise and worshiped soundchip. It adds some great features, that's why I tend to prefer it.
Classical one VCO, LFO modulation with waveform and destination choice, AMP envelope, but also a nice step sequencer, ADSR resonant filter and "Quantum" (kind of lofizer) unit.

All in all, that makes a nice sounding, easy to use and good looking VST (you know, my top three criterias ;)

Il existe plusieurs (bonnes) émulations du "SID", le chip sonore du COmmodore64, vous les connaissez peut être déjà.
C'est pourquoi je préfère vous présenter un VST pas tout jeune mais toujours au top dans sa catégorie selon moi : Quantum 64.
Quantum 64 n'est pas à proprement parler une nième émulation du SID, mais un instrument inspiré du vénérable chip son. Il y apporte plusieurs améliorations intéressantes.
En plus du classique VCO, de la modulation LFO avec forme d'onde et destination, l'enveloppe d'amplitude, vous trouverez également un step sequencer, un flitre résonnant avec enveloppe, et le module "Quantum" (sorte de bitcrusher/lofizer).

Au final, un instrument qui sonne, facile à utiliser et qui a une chouette dégaine (mon tiercé gagnant ;)

Glitch : a free VST multieffect to torture your sound lo-fi and much more !

It was impossible for me to make the Lo-fi week without talking about what is in my sense the best FX tool for this kind of sound : Illformed's Glitch !

Glitch is a multieffect VST that applies in realtime several 9 different effects to your sound :
- Tape slop
- Modulator
- Retrigger
- Shuffler
- Reverser
- Crusher
- Gater
- Delay
- Stretcher

Each of these effects has several controls, including a pan, dry/wet and gain knob.
The glitches are launched by a step sequencer, with pattern bank system.
In addition you've got an overdrive, a master filter (with several modes) and classic master gain controls.
Everything works fine in realtime, with no lags at all (excepted if you programmed them hee hee).
The latest version is said to be not 100% stable yet, didn't notice any pb on my system.

My favourite feature is the "Randomize", always have loved this, and especially in a VST like this one. Tweak some knobs, step some effects and let the hazard make the rest, you son of a glitch ;)

Je ne pouvais pas faire ma semaine du Lo-fi sans parler de ce qui est pour moi le meilleur outil pour ce type de son : Illformed's Glitch !

La dernière version n'est pas stable à 100% selon l'auteur, mais je n'ai pas eu de soucis sur mon PC.

Ma fonction préférée est le "Randomize", j'ai toujours adoré ça, en particulier sur ce type de plugin qui s'y prète fort bien. Tournez quelques bouttons, séquencez quelques effets, et laissez le hasard faire le reste, you son of a glitch ! (bon, en français mon jeu de mot tombe un peu à plat, alors je laisse la VO ;)

Tweakbench VSTs are not recent, but they are so great for chiptune that I couldn't make my "Lo-fi week" without reviewing some of them ;)

Tweakbench proposes a lot of instruments and effects (14 instruments / 8 effects), and I'll talk today about my favourite instruments : Peach, Toad and Triforce.

If you're familiar of videogames, you've already figured out what kind of machine it can emulate : the legendary Nintendo NES !
While Peach and Triforce are wavetable synths, Toad is a Drum box (also based on waves).
Peach and Toad are very simple to use, Triforce is the more advanced one, featuring more controls than the two others and a nice little arpegiator.

Les VST de Tweakbench ne sont pas récents, mais ils sont si efficaces pour faire du chiptune que je ne pouvais pas ne pas en parler pendant ma "semaine du Lo-fi" ;)

Tweakbench propose plusieurs VSTs (14 instruments / 8 effets), mais je vais vous présenter en particulier mes trois préférés : Peach, Toad and Triforce.

Si vous êtes un habitué de longue date des jeux vidéos, vous aurez compris aux noms quelle machine ces VST émule : la légendaire Nintendo NES !

Lo-fi week day #2 : Nanofuu ! 3 raging gameboys in your PC (free VST nanoloop like)

Welcome back you nasty 8bit junkys !
Today is the second day of lo-fi week, and I have tried something serious for you :)
On this page, from japanese developpers, you'll find several great free VSTs : Noise synth, FX generators, NES-like synth & drumbox, and a rare gem... a VST that reproduces in some way the famous gameboy "Nanoloop" software !

It's called "Nanofuu" and you've got two videos above to figure out how it works.
Not one, not two, but three gameboys on your PC for you to tweak !
Each of the gameboy is specialized : classical synth, noise, and PCM, and comes with a step sequencer.
Everything is very graphical, and doesn't come with a manual, so be ready for some fun looking to how it works, but no stress it's quite easy (hint : select button is very useful ;)

Warning : I've heard that Nanofuu VST might not be stable on all systems (it worked fine on mine)

Aujourd'hui c'est le second jour de la semaine du lo-fi, et j'ai quelque chose de sérieux pour vous :)
Sur cette page, que l'on doit à des développeurs japonais, vous trouverez plusieurs chouettes VST lo-fi : un Noise synth, des générateurs d'effets, des synthés et drumbox façon NES (la console 8 bit de nintendo pour les plus jeunes :), et uen perle... un VST qui reproduit plus ou moins le fameux programme "Nanoloop" pour Gameboy !

Il s'appelle "Nanofuu" et vous avez deux vidéos au début de ce post pour deviner comment il fonctionne.
Pas une, pas deux, mais bien trois Gameboys à torturer !
Chacune est spécialisée dans un registre de sons (classical synth, noise, PCM) et dotée d'un step sequencer.
C'est très graphique, et fourni sans manuel, aussi attendez vous à vous amuser en cherchant à comprendre le fonctionnement, mais rien d'insurmontable (indice : la touche select est très utile ;)

Attention : J'ai entendu que Nanofuu pouvait être instable sur certaines machines (il marche très bien pour la mienne)

VST, plugin, standalone, AU... What does all this mean ? (audio plugin guide for beginners)

I'm reviewing and posting about free VST for some time now, and I realised that maybe it would be good as it's the subject of this blog to explain for newcommers into computer music what it's all about !
Words like audio plugin, VST, AU, host, and others don't necessary talk ;)
So here is a brief and modest introduction guide to audio plugins...

Audio Plugin : it's an annex audio program designed to be added to a host program.
An audio plugin doesn't work by itself, it needs the host program to runn. It's just like an add-on.
Example : you work with cubase or ableton live, this is your host program. It contains already several instruments and effects specially designed to run with this program only. Ableton live native instruments will not work with cubase, neither will cubase instruments work with Ableton.
So there needed to be a standard plugin format that would make them compatible for different host programms, that's what (almost ;) brought the VST format.

VST : (for Virtual Studio Technology) is a standard for virtual instruments and effects invented by Steiberg (editor of Cubase and Nuendo sequencers). Every host program implementing this standard can open and run VST instruments and effects. There are tons of VST, lots of great ones, and even some great ones that are free (browse this blog for hot links ;). VST are intended to run on PC/Windows programs and work on most of them (Ableton live, Cubase/Nuendo, Fruity loops, Acid...)

There are (saddly) other virtual instruments and effects plugins standards, depending on the OS and the host program.

AU : Plugin format for Logic audio program
RTAS : Plugin format for Pro Tools program (MacOS)
MAS (for Digital performer) and DXi tend to be less used nowadays.

Some plugins are so "big" (Korg legacy collection, Kontakt...) that they are also designed to run as a standalone version, that means there is a second version of the program that can run by itself, and you can play it directly without any host program.
Usualy when you instal these big programs, the installer asks you if you want to install the VST and/or standalone version.
It depends of the use you make of it : if you always work with a sequencer, the standalone version is nto always useful. If you play only one instruments on stage with let's say a midi keyboard, you might only need the standalone version.

There are mainly two types of plugins : intstruments and effects.
Nothing mysterious about this, you'll find synth, drumbox and sample players in the instruments, delays, reverb, mastering tools and so one in the effects.

This is it, I hope you're now more comfortable with audio plugins, if this modest post did help I'm happy :)

Je chronique des VST gratuits depuis quelques temps déjà, et je me suis dit qu'il serait peut être bon de faire une petit introduction sur le sujet pour les débutant en MAO (Musique Assistée par Ordinateur).
Des mots comme plugin audio, VST, AU, hôte et autres ne parlent pas nécessairement ;)
Voici donc une brève et modeste introduction aux plugins audio...

Plugin audio : il s'agit d'un programme annexe qui est concçu pour être ouvert par un programme hôte.
Un plugin audio ne peut pas fonctionner seul, il a besoin d'un hôte pour s'ouvrir.
Exemple : vous travaillez avec Cubase ou Ableton live, c'est votre programme hôte. Il contient plusieurs instruments spécialement concçus pour eux. Un instrument natif de Ableton live ne fonctionnera pas sur Cubase, de même qu'un des instruments de cubase ne fonctionnera pas sur Live.
Il fallait donc un standard pour les plugins audio qui les rendrait compatibles avec plusieurs programmes, c'est ce qu'a (presque ;) ammené le format VST.

VST (pour Virtual Studio Technology) est un standard pour les instruments et effets virtuels inventé par Steinberg (à qui on doit Cubase et Nuendo entre autres).
Chaque programme hôte implémentant ce standard peut ouvrir et faire tourner des plugins VST. Il y a des tones de VST depuis l'invention du format, certains sont vraiment très bons, il y en a même qui sont très bons et gratuits (visitez ce blog pour en trouver des exemples ;)

Il y a d'autres formats de plugins audio, dépendant de l'OS (Système d'exploitation) et du programme hôte :

AU : pour Logic audio
RTAS : pour Pro Tools program (MacOS)
Les formats MAS (Digital performer) et DXi sont de moins en moins utilisés.

Certains plugins sont tellements "gros" (Korg legacy collection, Kontakt...) qu'ils sont également conçus pour tourner dans une version autonome, ou "standalone" en anglais, ce qui veut dire qu'il y a une deuxième version du plugin qui peut fonctionner sans programme hôte.
En général, quand vous installez ce type de programmes, l'istalleur vous demande si vous voulez installer la version VST et/ou standalone.
C'est une question d'utilité : si vous travaillez toujours avec un séquenceur, vous n'aurez probablement besoin que de la version VST (ou AU...). Si vous jouez d'un instrument seulement avec votre ordinateur (par exemple du B4 avec un clavier maitre) vous n'aurez peut être que l'utilité de la version Standalone.

Il y a basiquement deux types de plugins : instruments et effets.
Rien de mystérieux là-dessous, vous trouverez les synthés, boites à rythmes et lecteurs de samples dans les instruments, et les reverbs, delays et autres outils de mastering dans les effets.
