Perhaps the most frequently asked question we receive is, “Which lenses should I bring?” or “Which lenses do you recommend?” Some even ask if they should buy a new camera or lenses for the tour or workshop.

We know photographers can sometimes feel insecure about their gear. But don’t worry! We don’t make any judgements!

Many of our clients use kit lenses and point and shoot cameras and even a few have used drug store disposable cameras. No matter what someone brings, as long as it’s fully functional, everyone always has just as much fun. We will design the tour to the gear you already own and feel like bringing.

In fact, we don’t recommend you buy new equipment just for your trip. You should only travel with equipment you have owned for a while and had a chance to test, use frequently and have gotten familiar with. There’s nothing worse than going on a trip and coming back without any decent photographs because you used untested gear or used incorrect settings due to unfamiliarity with it.

Ok, ok. I get it. My equipment doesn’t matter but I’m stubborn and still want to know what’s ideal so I can get new stuff for my trip…
Well, if you have cash to blow or already have a good selection of gear then we recommend bringing a couple zoom lenses which cover all focal lengths from 14 or 24mm and up to 200mm. If you would like to photograph birds or wildlife we suggest you also bring more high-powered telephotos and teleconverters.

Photo: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200–400mm f/4G ED VR II Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

Nikon has announced an update to its top of class, highly sought after 200-400mm f/4 VR lens.

As an owner and heavy user of the previous Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200–400mm f/4G ED-IF VR [old version] I can tell you that the lens remains as close to perfect as a lens can get. Sure one could wish for it to be lighter and shorter, making it easier to handhold, but those just aren’t feasible options without sacrificing the phenomenal sharpness and optical quality of the lens. In all my years using it, I haven’t found one thing that I could say I’ve disliked about it.

Judging by the press materials, it seems if all the updates to the lens are mostly minor incremental improvements. So if you already have the previous version, there’s not a lot of reason to upgrade unless you simply must have the newest version of everything or if you think that one additional stop of VR is going to make a huge difference to you (and that’s very unlikely.)

Here’s a run down of the most radically new and improved features:

Nano Crystal Coat (new; “Further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.”)

All are pretty good or understandable updates. So, if you don’t have the previous version of the lens, there definitely doesn’t seem to be any changes that should give you any second thoughts, well except for it’s new higher price tag.

Photo: Nikon D700 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR Lens

There’s a pervasive insecurity amongst a lot of photographers when it comes to their gear. Some of it grows out of their inexperience and frustration with their inability to make photos as good as some of those they see online. But, I feel a lot of it is due to the marketing and perception that upgrading to the “latest and greatest” equipment will miraculously improve their photos overnight.

Photographers that have DX or APS-C Digital SLR bodies often ask me if I think they should upgrade to a full-frame DSLR but there is no easy or single answer to this question. The answer varies a lot depending on what the photographer photographs (or wants to photograph), which lenses they already own, and how much they can spend.

But is it the right question to ask?
I must also first explain that it might not be the question that one should be asking yet.

More experienced photographers will always tell you that it’s smarter to first invest in fast lenses, and more importantly, a good tripod before upgrading to the “latest and greatest” body. Everyone that ignores this advice regrets doing so once they’ve futility upgraded their bodies a few times and saw they never realized any significant benefit from it. It’s a costly mistake that the camera companies love photographers to make.

A well-rounded set of fast lenses makes it far easier to capture many more photographs, many of which you might not be able to capture properly with your current lens or lenses. The advantages of fast lenses over kit lenses are immediately noticeable and significant. From being able to focus and capture better and clearer photos in low light to flattening backgrounds behind your subject, or getting more reach, it’ll profoundly change the quality and impressiveness of your photographs. Additionally, fast lenses last a lot longer and when new versions are released (typically once every 10 years) there’s still little reason or desire to upgrade. So a DSLR body upgrade, no matter how much perceived or real improvement it has, it just can’t compete with the practicality of investing in a good set of lenses first.

Often forgotten or brushed aside by novices is the importance of tripods. Sturdy and light tripods are fun to use and won’t be left behind in your car. In fact, the more you use one, it’ll train you to pre-visualize better and also help you to be more deliberate and thoughtful while making photographs. It’s really amazing how profoundly a good tripod improves a photographer’s skills and photographs.

Now, don’t confuse a good tripod with the dreadfull quality GARBAGE you find in strip mall camera shops. Good tripods are made with lighter but strong materials, support heavier gear, are sturdier and more stable and most importantly built to last a lifetime. While good ones might even cost more than your camera, it’s a good idea to invest in a good one once because you’ll never need to replace it and won’t ever hesitate using it because of weight concerns. Without a doubt, a good tripod gives you the best bang for your buck!

Back to the question
If you already have a decent set of lenses and a tripod (which you don’t hesitate to use) then you’re ready to start thinking about upgrading your DSLR body.

Lets say you have an entry level DSLR body like the Nikon D5000. It’s a great body and still very modern. The differences between it and let’s say the Nikon D300s are really not that great. The key differences are the improved auto-focusing system, the number of frames per second it can fire, weather/dust sealing, and the improved shutter life and durability. Theres strong arguments why each of those features are worth having but they really won’t impact the quality of your photos that significantly. So is the cost of the upgrade justifiable? That solely depends on the individual but again, I’d strongly urge you to invest in fast lenses and a good tripod first.

If you have an older entry level DSLR it might pay to upgrade to something like the Nikon D300s but I’d hesitate to give a definitive yes unless it was at least 3-years old and only after carefully weighing the differences between the cameras and how much they can truly impact your photos.

The important lesson here is to only upgrade if you actually NEED the improvements. Don’t upgrade just out of insecurity or the perception that your cameras is “amateurish.” I’ve seen many talented pros make jaw-dropping and drool worthy photos with simple bottom of the barrel consumer cameras, even point and shoots and cellphones, and many more novices make lousy photos with “latest and greatest” $8,000+ body. Even with it pre-set to the right manual settings (or in auto mode,) it isn’t going to make someone that’s inexperienced any better.

What about switching to full-frame?
The biggest advantage to upgrading to full-frame bodies like the Nikon D700 or Nikon D3s is the higher/cleaner ISO, low light sensitivity, and ability to make ultra wide angle photographs.

How important are these improvements? Will they have a meaningful impact on your photographs? Again it depends but as always, it’s still better to invest in fast lenses and a good tripod first.

If you have an older DSLR (over 3-years old) like the Nikon D200 and already own a f/2.8 24-70mm and 70-200mm then moving to a full-frame body would be a smart upgrade. But, if you don’t or only have DX lenses then you won’t see much benefit from it.

I don’t feel switching from the D300/D300s to full-frame is a worth while upgrade unless you need to shoot ultra-wide angle or have a definitive need for the increased ISO or frame rate.

It’s important to point out that the Nikon D700 is likely to be updated by the end of the year, if not sooner during the summer. If you were to go that route I’d strongly consider waiting for the announcement so you can get a better deal on a used one. Also beware that if you should upgrade to full-frame that you’ll quickly want an ultra-wide angle lens like the 14-24mm f/2.8 or 16-35mm f/4 to take full advantage of the full-frame sensor.Similar Posts:

If you’re still unsure what to get the photographer on your list, here are some of my favorite things that every photographer will be thrilled to receive!

Giottos AA1900 Large Rocket Blaster ($13.00)

If they don’t have a Giottos Rocket Blaster they have a lot of dust in their photos!

Lenses are dust magnets and if not removed it shows up in the images. Worse, dust on the rear lens element usually gets on the camera’s sensor and getting dust off of the image sensor is never an easy task.

This large blower moves a lot of air effectively and has a filter to prevent dust from being sucked in and blown out on to the lens or sensor. Get your photographer a couple as they should always have one on them!

Neutral Density Filters ($30-$45)

A decent set of Neutral Density Filters allows photographers to reduce the amount of light that is passing through the lens without changing the color. This is especially useful when slower shutter speeds are need in brighter conditions, like to shoot moving water.

I recommend getting a Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 0.3 Filter, Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 0.6 Filter, and Tiffen 77mm Neutral Density 0.9 Filter to start as they’ll give a good range of adjustment without breaking the bank.

Hoodman H-LPP3 HoodLoupe 3.0 Professional 3-Inch Screen Loupe ($80.00)

I really feel silly because I used to make fun of the Hoodman HoodLoupe. After borrowing one from a friend and using it for a few hours I ordered one as soon as I got back home. Now, I never make photos without it.

Not only does it make it easier to check for proper focus and other potential problems in the image, it’s indispensable when the sun is to the photographer’s back or side.

FireWire 400/800 UDMA CompactFlash Reader ($50.00)

I hate USB CF Card readers. They’re slow and they also slow down the entire computer while transferring files because they use lots of CPU cycles. Firewire readers don’t do this so the computer doesn’t slow to a crawl during file transfers.

Calumet’s FireWire 400/800 UDMA CompactFlash Reader is UDMA complaint and can transfer files at over 45 MB/s. I’ve found them very reliable and they don’t take up much room on your desk or in your bag. Get one for the MacBook or notebook too.

These are very reasonably priced for pro-quality cards which can be used in extreme temperatures and yet still come with a Hassle-Free Lifetime Warranty.

Calumet has rated them safe for use in extreme conditions and to perform in temperatures as low as -13 degrees F and as high as 185 degrees F.

I’ve been using several for over a year and they’ve been trouble free.

It has a built in business card holder and loop for attachment to clothing or a lanyard. I don’t know of any other wallet that holds as many cards or that is made as well.

These wipes make cleaning, quick and easy because they work and they work on everything.

They even remove the most stubborn crud or oily smudges quickly and without effort. But best of all, since they’re disposable, they won’t transfer dirt and oil back on to the lenses like microfiber cloths do.

The wipes are big enough that they can be folded, so only fresh areas are used on each lens. I often can clean all my lenses using just one.

They’re lightweight, hold a lot of gear, are extremely well made with high quality materials, are very rugged, and are comfortable to carry thanks to their nicely padded straps.

The Think Tank Urban Disguise 30 is an ideal size for most photographers as it can comfortably carry 2-3 lenses, a pro camera body, flash, and more.

Gear that is exposed to changing temperatures can have condensation form inside it and can quickly damage it or even cause mold and mildew to grow. This is why most electronics is shipped with packets of desiccant silica gel. The Eva-dry Renewable Wireless Mini Dehumidifer is filled with similar moisture absorbing crystals which will help protect equipment in the same way. Once its full, it can be recharged by simply plugging it in to an outlet. I put one in each of my camera bags whenever the weather and conditions require it.

With a maximum height of 77.95-inches (6.5-feet) and a minimum height of 3.94-inches it can be adjusted to any height in-between. Because it’s made of space age carbon fiber it only weights 4.34 pounds but doesn’t sacrifice rigidity. It can support up to 39.68 pounds of professional gear and is very stable thanks to carbon fiber’s vibration absorption properties. When closed it’s only 27.56-inches long and is very comfortable to carry with leg wraps.

Unlike its Canon counterparts, the D3s focuses fast and extremely accurately even under low contrast conditions. Plus it can shoot up to 9 frames per second and capture up to 4,300 images per battery charge.

It’s huge price tag is justified because it makes it so much easier to make more great shots and capture more moments that they might have missed with any other camera.

Point and Shoot of the Year:

Canon PowerShot S90IS ($400)

Nearly every professional photographer either has the Canon PowerShot S90IS camera high on their holiday wish list or it’s already in their pocket.

I have to applaud Canon for having the guts to not only drop out of the megapixel race but also to go a step further and reduce the pixel count on the S90 to 10-megapixels. Combined with it’s larger than average image sensor and super fast 28mm-105mm F/2.0 IS lens, it delivers exceptional low-light performance and unprecedented image quality for a pocketable point and shoot camera.

Like DSLRs, in addition to a full Auto mode, it has Manual, Aperture-prority, Shutter-prority, and Custom modes plus Movie and Scene Modes and can also capture your photos in RAW+JPEG.

The S90′s 3-inch high resolution 461,000 dot, high contrast ratio LCD with wide viewing angle and multiple coatings is bright, sharp, and impressive. Canon claims that the multiple coatings help prevent scratches and reflections. I’ve had mine in and out of my pocket probably a thousand times and it’s still scratch-free so they’re doing something right.

Not content with just blowing away all other pocketable cameras with the S90′s superior image quality, Canon also introduced an innovative Control Ring for customizable control and easy operation of Focus, Exposure, ISO, Step Zoom, or White Balance. For pros who want to set everything manually, it’s makes using a point and shoot FUN again and can even tempt novices to explore manual settings.

The S90 has only one standout fault: it only shoots Standard Definition (SD) video. At least the SD video (640 x 480 @ 30 fps, 320 x 240 @ 30 fps) it produces is sharp and very high quality. Frankly, I’d rather have its sharp/high quality SD video than the lousy quality HD video which many other point and shoots and even some DSLRs are crippled by.

Runner Up:

Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR
(Replaced with the Fujifilm FinePix F80EXR in February 2010.)

If you are lusting over the Canon S90 but can’t convince your wife to let you spend $400 for it, the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR maybe the way to go. In terms of features, size, and other specifications its similar and has pretty good image quality. Even though it definitely doesn’t match the S90, it’s the closest you can get for over $100 less.

An added 6-megapixel High Sensitivity and Low Noise mode uses two adjacent pixels together to absorb more light in the darkest of conditions and produces low-light shots of good quality with minimal noise.

A Wide Dynamic Range mode combines two sequential exposures of the 6-megapixel High Sensitivity and Low Noise mode to produce an in camera, natural looking, High Dynamic Range photograph.

Best Hybrid (Still AND Video) Point and Shoot:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3
(Replaced with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 in February 2010.)

If the absence of High Definition (HD) video recording in the S90 was a deal breaker for you, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 is your best bet.

It records in AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264) format, via AVCHD lite or Motion JPEG at 1280 x 720 at 30 fps, 848 x 480 at 30 fps, 640 x 480 at 30 fps, or 320 x 240 at 30 fps. Its stereo microphone allows it to record Dolby AC3 stereo soun. For built-in mics/sound it’s not too bad; it’s noticeably a step above other cameras in its class.

As a still camera, the ZS3 holds its own against others in it’s class but it doesn’t come anywhere close to the Canon S90. At least its quick to startup, pretty quick to focus and has good image quality with decent high ISO output in smaller prints. Panasonic also throws in a 12x zoom (25-300mm F/3.3-4.9) IS Lens and a 3-inch 460,000 dots high-resolution LCD screen.

Best Value Point and Shoot:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1
(Replaced with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3 in February 2010.)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 is the little brother to ZS3 and shares many of the same features.

However, to cut costs, Panasonic outfitted it with a different sensor, a smaller and lower resolution screen (2.7-inch LCD with 230,000 dots), and it only shoots SD video. It’s slightly slower to zoom as well but it still delivers very good image quality, reliable focus and exposure, good colors and decent high ISO output in smaller prints.

If you can’t cross the $250 barrier, right now the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 is the way to go.

Best Waterproof/Ruggedized Point and Shoot:

Pentax Optio W80
(Replaced with the Pentax Optio W90 in February 2010.)

The Pentax Optio W80 is ideal for the outdoor adventurer or anyone who has a serious case of the dropsies.

Pentax claims it can withstand the impact from falls of more than three feet. It’s also waterproof up to 16 feet deep for up to two hours, dustproof, and coldproof down to 14 degrees. But all the ruggedness sacrifices image quality and other features. Your phone’s camera might even capture better photographs but at least the W80 can be brought with you places you wouldn’t consider taking your phone or any other camera.

Beware though. A common misconception about waterproof cameras is that you can bring them to the beach without worry. That just isn’t the case. Exposure to sand and saltwater is almost a certain and quick death sentence for the camera.

Just received the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR Lens lens this morning, which I ordered yesterday from Amazon.com. (Also available at B&H Photo.) I’m very eager to get out and put it to use so here’s a very quick and dirty unboxing video with a brief review of its features.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR Lens specifications:

The go-to lens of demanding professionals and serious enthusiasts, the 70-200mm f/2.8 is one of the most useful and sought after high-performance lenses for sports, wildlife, portrait, travel and news photographers. Nikon has further refined the lens, with an enhanced optical formula featuring seven extra low dispersion (ED) glass elements. These elements provide the ultimate in rendering characteristics to capture vibrant, high resolution images with optimal contrast. Image quality is further enhanced by Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat, which reduces instances of lens flare and ghosting, elevating optical performance, even in tricky conditions such as those found in professional sports settings and stage events.

Designed to deliver the pinnacle of image quality in a wide variety of conditions, the new 70-200mm VR II lens also includes a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, quiet autofocusing. The SWM takes full advantage of 3D tracking autofocus (AF) systems, such as those found on the FX-format D3X, D3 and D700 D-SLR cameras. Three focus modes are available – M, A/M and M/A – for automatically focusing, manually focusing or fine tuning AF performance to best suit the photographers’ needs. Nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to a more attractive bokeh, allowing photographers create soft and more naturally separated backgrounds that better highlight the subject.

Fast f/2.8 Zoom-NIKKOR lens
Perfect for sports, photojournalism and wildlife photography.

Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization
Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images.

7 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements
Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture settings.

Nano Crystal Coat
Further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.

Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus.

Rounded 9-blade diaphragm
Renders more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.

Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens, retaining subjectworking distance through the focus range.

Focuses to 4.6 feet
Close focusing provided throughout the entire zoom range for extended versatility.

M/A focus mode switch
Enables quick response to changing situations between manual and autofocus operation.

Flower-shaped lens hood
Included HB-48 lens hood–shades the objective from unwanted, image-degrading light.

Photo: Canon PowerShot S90IS

At the very least, you should bring:

 A working camera.
Any make and model will do!

Memory cards with free space or unexposed film.
We recommend you bring enough to shoot at least 100 photographs.

Fully charged rechargeable batteries or fresh disposable batteries.

Multiple layers of clothing and a jacket.
The weather changes pretty rapidly in Vermont and you should be prepared for temperature drops and rain or snow.

 Comfortable closed-toe shoes.
We don’t go too far on foot anywhere but you’ll want to have a good pair of comfortable shoes that won’t make you cringe each time we stop.

A box lunch and/or snack and water and/or drinks.
Unless specifically stated, food and drinks are not included. We do have a cooler filled with ice for our guests. There aren’t many restaurants to stop for a meal and you probably wouldn’t want to waste the time but we can stop for provisions or go to a restaurant if that if that’s what you really want to do. Some of the general stores we pass still don’t accept credit cards so it’s a good idea to bring some cash.

Like the Boy Scouts say, “Be prepared.”
If you have any allergies or medical issues please bring along prescriptions and anything else you might need in an emergency.

We also recommend the following items, if you own them. However they’re not required so don’t feel like you need to run out and buy them.

 A DSLR and multiple lenses.
Bring it all! From wide-angle to telephoto zoom and extenders. We’ll show you how to get the most out of what you do decide to bring. Don’t forget filters!

A backpack or shoulder bag for your gear.
Even in the back country of Vermont it’s not a good idea to leave any equipment unintended so you should be able to bring your expensive gear with you if you decide to stop and go into any stores or restaurants.

A sturdy tripod, ball head, and a cable release.
Besides the camera itself, a good tripod is easily the 2nd most important thing to have and will improve your pictures more than any other upgrade!

Flashes, Better Beamer, PocketWizards, reflectors, and other lighting accessories.
Sometimes the light just don’t cooperate and fill flash and other lights make your life easier.

 Again, be prepared.
It’s not a bad idea to bring sunglasses, bug repellent, sunscreen lotion, and a change of socks.

We also stock our vehicles with a lot of useful items.Similar Posts:
