All the pretty spots have been spared and Irene won't have any effect on visitors. So why are people canceling their plans to visit Vermont?

VT is OPEN badge: Copyright Lara Dickson

You know doubt heard of and/or seen some of the pictures and videos of the destruction Irene inflicted in limited areas in Vermont. But it’s very important to point out that nearly all northern and central communities were completely spared or had very minimal impact from the storm or subsequent flooding. In fact, nearly all the tourist areas were spared completely and the few that weren’t are very quickly rebuilding and recovering.

All the areas I most frequently take visitors to have had no damage or flooding at all. All but one of my favorite stops are absolutely untouched and look just as they did before the storm! The high winds never materialized and the flooding was limited to very low lying areas that are mostly in the Southern counties and nearly all the locations directly impacted by flooding weren’t that photogenic anyway.

Vermont is very much open for business and you wouldn’t even know there was a storm here if you bypass the southern counties by taking any of the interstates.

Vermonters need your help as the perception propagated by the media is that the entire state has been affected and many people are needlessly canceling their reservations and plans to visit Vermont this leaf and winter season. Even if you we’re planning on visiting the southern counties its unnecessary to change your plans. By mid-late month all major roads that were damaged will be made drivable again. Only a very small handful of areas which you likely wouldn’t have wanted to visit anyway will be difficult to get to.

All the landmarks, landscapes and trees will be just as beautiful as any past season. We will probably even have an incredible leaf season as all the rain and moisture in the ground usually leads to more vidid colors.

So keep your plans or make plans to come to Vermont this fall and winter. You’ll have an incredibly great time, make lots of impressive photographs, and help Vermonters by making up for all the silly chickens that were too easily scared off by the sensationalist media desperate to fill their broadcast day with content.Similar Posts:

Each Tour and Workshop is unique as we’re very flexible to our clients’ desires. Here’s what most share in common:

A typical (Full-day) Tour or Workshop begins with the departure from the perviously agreed on location at the agreed time in the morning. Some photographers opt to leave very early, even before dawn or may leave later in the morning to have time left to photograph the sunset or during dusk.

Depending on the departure location, the travel time to the first stop and from location to location will vary but the routes are preplanned to maximize the time available for stops at beautiful and picturesque locations.

We’ll also plan the stops with the light and sun’s position in mind. For example, during the midday, if it should be sunny, we’ll take you to locations that are not affected by harsh light.

A break for lunch or other meals is at the clients’ discretion. Most clients place an emphasis on photography, not meals or resting and many bring box lunches and other snacks to eat while we’re driving to the next stop.

If the client desires, photography instruction and/or assistance with composition and field techniques will be offered throughout the Tour. Time may also be allocated for critique of photos or assistance with Workflow (Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc). Most workshops include dedicated time for all of the aforesaid.

We begin traveling back to the departure location once the time for the half-day or full-day tour has been fully used (unless the clients’ would like to start back earlier.)Similar Posts:

Canon updates its award winning S90 pocketable camera with 720p HD video, in-camera HDR and more. We'll tell you if it's worth buying or upgrading.

Canon has announced an update to our favorite point and shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot S90. The S90 was ultra popular with enthusiasts and even with professional photographers as many love to use it on weekends, vacations and as their, ‘it’s always with me’ camera. Its compact, pocketable design deliveres high quality, DSLR like photographs along with some of the sharpest SD videos from any still camera sold.

The new Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera also features a super fast and bright wide angle f/2.0 lens with 3.8x optical zoom but is a hair thinner and lighter. It also adds a new optical hybrid image stabilization system and can now shoot 720p HD video!

Like its predecessor, the S95 is also equipped with RAW image capture, the popular control ring (see photo below) for manual control, and a 3-inch LCD screen with an anti-scratch coating.

The Canon PowerShot S95 is the first Canon camera to feature an in-camera, HDR scene mode to help capture the full dynamic range of a scene that consists of very dark tones and bright highlights. With the use of a tripod, one push of the shutter button yields three sequential images with various exposures, and then combines them into a single optimized image within the camera. As a result, the image showcases a better range of depth and detail found in natural settings!

I feel it’s worth pre-ordering the S95 now as there are times I wished my S90 could shoot HD video. I’m also very anxious to try the in-camera HDR and see what else has been improved on this already near perfect pocketable camera. But if HD video or in-camera HDR shooting, or the slight weight drop and thinner body isn’t very important to you then we still strongly recommend the Canon PowerShot S90. Now is a very good time to jump on it as it’s being discounted ahead of the new Canon PowerShot S95 hitting the streets.

Please subscribe to our RSS feed or email updates (at the top of the page) as we’ll will have a full review of the S95 after receiving it.

Perhaps the most frequently asked question we receive is, "Which lenses should I bring?" or "Which lenses do you recommend?" Here's our recommendations.

Photo: © 2009 Steve Mermelstein – All rights reserved.

Perhaps the most frequently asked question we receive is, “Which lenses should I bring?” or “Which lenses do you recommend?” Some even ask if they should buy a new camera or lenses for the tour or workshop.

We know photographers can sometimes feel insecure about their gear. But don’t worry! We don’t make any judgements!

Many of our clients use kit lenses and point and shoot cameras and even a few have used drug store disposable cameras. No matter what someone brings, as long as it’s fully functional, everyone always has just as much fun. We will design the tour to the gear you already own and feel like bringing.

In fact, we don’t recommend you buy new equipment just for your trip. You should only travel with equipment you have owned for a while and had a chance to test, use frequently and have gotten familiar with. There’s nothing worse than going on a trip and coming back without any decent photographs because you used untested gear or used incorrect settings due to unfamiliarity with it.

Ok, ok. I get it. My equipment doesn’t matter but I’m stubborn and still want to know what’s ideal so I can get new stuff for my trip…
Well, if you have cash to blow or already have a good selection of gear then we recommend bringing a couple zoom lenses which cover all focal lengths from 14 or 24mm and up to 200mm. If you would like to photograph birds or wildlife we suggest you also bring more high-powered telephotos and teleconverters.

More specific recommendations:

Here’s all the point and shoot camers we recommend.

or here’s the ideal DSLR lenses for DSLR and SLR cameras:

Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF DX Nikkor Zoom Lens AND Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Telephoto Zoom Lens OR Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens AND Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S Nikkor Lens

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens AND Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens OR Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens AND Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens

It wouldn’t hurt to bring the following, if you already have it:

Nikon 200-400mm f/4G AF-S SWM SIC ED IF VR II Nikkor Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

 Teleconverters

 Macro lens

 Lensbaby

Where to Purchase Gear
If you’re buying online, we recommend Amazon.com (but not third parties; only buy if it “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com“) B&H Photo or Adorama.

Nikon makes one of its best lenses even better and we've got a run down of each of its new features and updates.

Photo: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200–400mm f/4G ED VR II Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

Nikon has announced an update to its top of class, highly sought after 200-400mm f/4 VR lens.

As an owner and heavy user of the previous Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200–400mm f/4G ED-IF VR [old version] I can tell you that the lens remains as close to perfect as a lens can get. Sure one could wish for it to be lighter and shorter, making it easier to handhold, but those just aren’t feasible options without sacrificing the phenomenal sharpness and optical quality of the lens. In all my years using it, I haven’t found one thing that I could say I’ve disliked about it.

Judging by the press materials, it seems if all the updates to the lens are mostly minor incremental improvements. So if you already have the previous version, there’s not a lot of reason to upgrade unless you simply must have the newest version of everything or if you think that one additional stop of VR is going to make a huge difference to you (and that’s very unlikely.)

Here’s a run down of the most radically new and improved features:

Nano Crystal Coat (new; “Further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.”)

Nikon VR II Image Stabilization (improved; adds 1 additional stop for a total of four-stop vibration reduction and also adds “Automatic Panning Detection and an Active VR Mode to help compensate for movement from an unstable position such as a moving vehicle. Additionally, VR is always engaged when shooting in the D-Movie mode on select Nikon D-SLRs, helping to stabilize HD video capture.”)

Three Focus Modes (improved; “A/M mode joins the familiar M/A and M modes, enhancing AF control versatility with fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus to accommodate personal shooting techniques.”)

Approximate Weight 118.5 oz. (previous version was approx. 115.52 oz.)

All are pretty good or understandable updates. So, if you don’t have the previous version of the lens, there definitely doesn’t seem to be any changes that should give you any second thoughts, well except for it’s new higher price tag.

The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200–400mm f/4G ED VR II Super Telephoto Zoom Lens is expected to ship in late-May 2010 and is now available for on Amazon.com and B&H Photo.

Should I get the new ____ camera? Is full-frame worth it? Are these even questions you should be asking? Practical advice for anyone considering upgrading to the latest and greatest.

Photo: Nikon D700 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera and Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S NIKKOR Lens

There’s a pervasive insecurity amongst a lot of photographers when it comes to their gear. Some of it grows out of their inexperience and frustration with their inability to make photos as good as some of those they see online. But, I feel a lot of it is due to the marketing and perception that upgrading to the “latest and greatest” equipment will miraculously improve their photos overnight.

Photographers that have DX or APS-C Digital SLR bodies often ask me if I think they should upgrade to a full-frame DSLR but there is no easy or single answer to this question. The answer varies a lot depending on what the photographer photographs (or wants to photograph), which lenses they already own, and how much they can spend.

But is it the right question to ask?
I must also first explain that it might not be the question that one should be asking yet.

More experienced photographers will always tell you that it’s smarter to first invest in fast lenses, and more importantly, a good tripod before upgrading to the “latest and greatest” body. Everyone that ignores this advice regrets doing so once they’ve futility upgraded their bodies a few times and saw they never realized any significant benefit from it. It’s a costly mistake that the camera companies love photographers to make.

A well-rounded set of fast lenses makes it far easier to capture many more photographs, many of which you might not be able to capture properly with your current lens or lenses. The advantages of fast lenses over kit lenses are immediately noticeable and significant. From being able to focus and capture better and clearer photos in low light to flattening backgrounds behind your subject, or getting more reach, it’ll profoundly change the quality and impressiveness of your photographs. Additionally, fast lenses last a lot longer and when new versions are released (typically once every 10 years) there’s still little reason or desire to upgrade. So a DSLR body upgrade, no matter how much perceived or real improvement it has, it just can’t compete with the practicality of investing in a good set of lenses first.

Often forgotten or brushed aside by novices is the importance of tripods. Sturdy and light tripods are fun to use and won’t be left behind in your car. In fact, the more you use one, it’ll train you to pre-visualize better and also help you to be more deliberate and thoughtful while making photographs. It’s really amazing how profoundly a good tripod improves a photographer’s skills and photographs.

Now, don’t confuse a good tripod with the dreadfull quality GARBAGE you find in strip mall camera shops. Good tripods are made with lighter but strong materials, support heavier gear, are sturdier and more stable and most importantly built to last a lifetime. While good ones might even cost more than your camera, it’s a good idea to invest in a good one once because you’ll never need to replace it and won’t ever hesitate using it because of weight concerns. Without a doubt, a good tripod gives you the best bang for your buck!

Back to the question
If you already have a decent set of lenses and a tripod (which you don’t hesitate to use) then you’re ready to start thinking about upgrading your DSLR body.

Lets say you have an entry level DSLR body like the Nikon D5000. It’s a great body and still very modern. The differences between it and let’s say the Nikon D300s are really not that great. The key differences are the improved auto-focusing system, the number of frames per second it can fire, weather/dust sealing, and the improved shutter life and durability. Theres strong arguments why each of those features are worth having but they really won’t impact the quality of your photos that significantly. So is the cost of the upgrade justifiable? That solely depends on the individual but again, I’d strongly urge you to invest in fast lenses and a good tripod first.

If you have an older entry level DSLR it might pay to upgrade to something like the Nikon D300s but I’d hesitate to give a definitive yes unless it was at least 3-years old and only after carefully weighing the differences between the cameras and how much they can truly impact your photos.

The important lesson here is to only upgrade if you actually NEED the improvements. Don’t upgrade just out of insecurity or the perception that your cameras is “amateurish.” I’ve seen many talented pros make jaw-dropping and drool worthy photos with simple bottom of the barrel consumer cameras, even point and shoots and cellphones, and many more novices make lousy photos with “latest and greatest” $8,000+ body. Even with it pre-set to the right manual settings (or in auto mode,) it isn’t going to make someone that’s inexperienced any better.

What about switching to full-frame?
The biggest advantage to upgrading to full-frame bodies like the Nikon D700 or Nikon D3s is the higher/cleaner ISO, low light sensitivity, and ability to make ultra wide angle photographs.

How important are these improvements? Will they have a meaningful impact on your photographs? Again it depends but as always, it’s still better to invest in fast lenses and a good tripod first.

If you have an older DSLR (over 3-years old) like the Nikon D200 and already own a f/2.8 24-70mm and 70-200mm then moving to a full-frame body would be a smart upgrade. But, if you don’t or only have DX lenses then you won’t see much benefit from it.

I don’t feel switching from the D300/D300s to full-frame is a worth while upgrade unless you need to shoot ultra-wide angle or have a definitive need for the increased ISO or frame rate.

It’s important to point out that the Nikon D700 is likely to be updated by the end of the year, if not sooner during the summer. If you were to go that route I’d strongly consider waiting for the announcement so you can get a better deal on a used one. Also beware that if you should upgrade to full-frame that you’ll quickly want an ultra-wide angle lens like the 14-24mm f/2.8 or 16-35mm f/4 to take full advantage of the full-frame sensor.Similar Posts:
