On October 30, 2008, after more than 80 years of airline operations and 125 years of aviation in Berlin’s Central Airport, the last planes took off at Tempelhof Zentralflughafen. This years edition of Preview – The Emerging Art Fair was held in the main hall of the former Berlin Tempelhof Central Airport. The Zentralflughafen is not being used anymore, but there’s still a conveyor belt in the main hall. Gallery MyVisit used it to display works by Frederik Foert. For this year’s edition, Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair moved from Tempelhof’s Hangar 2 to the main hall of the former Berlin Central Airport. With the new location, Preview Berlin set up a new, different exhibition concept. The new approach was necessary because of the specific requirements of the new space in the historic building. The fair chose a layout without the classic white wall booths. As a result, the focus is on the fields of sculpture, installation, performance and video.

Among the artists presented are Marcel Bühler (Cream Gallery, Berlin), Hesselholdt & Mejlvang (Charlotte Fogh Contemporary, Arhus), Thomas Kilpper (Patrick Heide, London), Dominik Stauch (Bernhard Bischoff & Partner, Bern), Andrea Lehmann (Anna Klinkhammer, Düsseldorf), Frederik Foert (myVisit, Berlin), Alain Josseau (Sollertis, Toulouse), Dieter Lutsch (Jarmuschek + Partner, Berlin), Stephanie Backes (Loop – Raum für aktuelle Kunst, Berlin).

Now in its fourth year, Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair presents national and international galleries and project spaces. For the third time a former hangar at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport is the venue or Preview Berlin. In addition to the galleries’ presentations, the fair offers various curated presentation formats, including a Video Art Program and the new Performance Art Day and Blue Room Series.

Galerie Metro is a relatively new gallery on Brunnenstrasse in Berlin Mitte that opened up in April 2007. It’s a producers gallery (Produzentengalerie) representing an international group of 11 young artists working mainly in the fields of installation, photography, new media and sound. The gallery is run by Katharina Garrelt and Kai Schupke. We met Katharina Garrelt at Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair, where she gave us an introduction to the gallery’s program and artists. The artists represented by Metro are Mario Asef, Tatjana Bergius, Lizza May David, Francis Hunger, Beatrice Jugert, Markus Leitsch, Rebecca Lennon, André Marose, Alice Münch, Bosse Sudenburg, and Sencer Vardarman. At Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair we met Priska Juschka of Priska C. Juschka Fine Art, New York. Priska gives us an insight into the gallery’s program in general and especially about artist Christine Tarkowski, who has a solo-show at the gallery in New York at the moment.
