Our final international dinner and culture night of the year will be held on Friday, April 17th, at VU's Green Activities Center. The evening will feature international cuisine and a performance of Indian classical dance by the Kalakshiti Performing Arts Company.

Tickets for the dinner and performance are available now and cost $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. Tickets are on sale at VU’s Old Post Bookstore located in the Student Union. To purchase tickets by phone using a credit/debit card, call 812-888-5992.

About the performers

The Kalakshiti Performing Arts Company strives to bring forth awareness of India’s art and cultural heritage. Specifically, Kalakshiti aims to propagate the classical and contemporary performing arts (dance, drama, and music) of India through public performances, educational presentations, workshops, and collaborations. It also aims to enrich the community by increasing the access to performing arts of India.

For the 2008-2009 school year we have 85 international students from 32 different countries! Of our 85, 32 students are new freshmen. This is an increase from 25 new freshmen last year at this time.

As expected, this year promises some great international dinners. Here is the schedule. See you then!

School Year Comes to an End

Another school year comes to an end! We do however have a number of international students taking classes and working on campus throughout the summer break.

The fall term begins on Monday, August 18th. Orientation for new international students will begin on Thursday, August 14th.

The Chinese characters that are shown above can be literally translated as "New Year Happy" (the wishing part is implied in the context). Written in the Pinyin Roman letter system it would be: "xin nian kuai le!"

The date of February 7th is actually the first day of the new year according to the Lunar Calendar. 2008 is the Year of the Rat. If you were born in 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 - you were born under the sign of the rat. In case you are feeling offended (I tell my Chinese friends that Americans generally find offense at being called a rat), according to ancient tradition, those born in this year are associated with the traits of being clever, bright, courageous, enterprising, social and family minded, among others. Community Service/Leaf Raking

Several members of the International Student Club, joined with students from BMI and TBW participated in a community leaf raking project this past Saturday. The group covered several city blocks in a neighborhood to the north of VU, spreading good will as they worked hard to serve.

Middle Eastern Culture Night Coming Featuring Salaam Band

Middle Eastern Culture Night will take place on Friday, November 30th in the Green Activities Center. The evening will start with a buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m. and will feature several of our students who have their family roots in the Middle East. Our entertainment will be provided by Salaam, a world music ensemble from Bloomington, Indiana, that performs a wide variety of Middle Eastern music including dancers. Learn more about this unique group on their website. The word "salaam" is Arabic for peace. How appropriate for such a time as this.

Buffet dinner menu:

Lubia Polo (curried green bean rice with ground beef)
Helawat al Jazr (sweet cardamomed carrots)

Cracker Wheat Bread & Sunflower Bread

Ticket price, which includes the buffet dinner is $7.00 per person and can be purchased in the VU campus bookstore, located inside of the Student Union. Tickets will be available for purchase beginning Friday, November 16th. All ticket proceeds go to the Dr. Razi International Student Scholarship Fund.

Tickets are free for current VU students. Students can pick up their ticket on the 2nd floor of the Student Union in the Student Center office.

Step Afrika coming to VU, October 19th

Step Afrika will be coming to Vincennes University for our annual African Culture Night on October 16th. If you would like to learn more about this group you can visit the Step Afrika website or listen to a special radio program highlighting this unique dance form from NPR.

The evening will begin with a buffet dinner featuring delicious African cuisine at 6:00 p.m., in the Green Activities Center. We'll also have the opportunity to meet our VU international students who represent 10 African nations.

After dinner and a short program in Green, there will be an intermission in which we'll ask everyone to transport themselves to the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center for the Step Afrika show. For students, a bus will be available.

Tickets are $8 per person which includes dinner and entertainment. They can be purchased in the VU bookstore. 100% of the ticket proceeds are donated to the Dr. Razi International Student Scholarship Fund. Tickets are free for all current VU students and should be picked up in the Student Center, 2nd floor, Student Union.

If you cannot make the dinner, tickets can be purchased for show only (general ticket = $5, VU employee = $4, youth/seniors = $4, VU students = free). Show only tickets should be purchased directly with the Red Skelton box office (phone: 812-888-4039).
