MARC's 2009 HAMFEST & COMPUTER SHOW

The Mobile Amateur Radio Club's 2009 Hamfest & Computer Show will be held on April 11, 2009 at the Boys & Girls Club auditorium in Tillman's Corner (6585 Carol Plantation Road). The facility has a large space with plenty of room for a big hamfest, plus eating and socializing. The auditorium is all at ground level, including floor level entry doors, and easy access, excellent HVAC (AC/heat), a full-service kitchen, and plenty of free parking. Vendors can drive right up to the door to unload.   At present there is no power for RV's, so they must be self-contained. The location is close to I-10.

Tower Electronics has already promised to be there, and others will follow.

Admission $5.00 (includes admission, door prize ticket, and 1 Grand Prize Ticket). Tables $10.00 each. (Hamfest tables may be paid for online. www.w4iax.com ) XYLs and children under 13 free. Coffee, doughnuts, and lunch available on site.

Friday set-up: After 3:00 p.m.
Saturday setup: 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
'Fest hours: Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

VoIP SKYWARN/Hurricane Preparation Net on 146.82

Beginning June 21, the 146.82 repeater is carrying the VoIP SKYWARN/Hurricane Preparation Net, most Saturdays at 7:00 p.m. (Net will be put on the .82 when the control operator is available, not every Saturday.) The repeater tone, clock, and ID’er will be turned off to facilitate this. This is an EchoLink net, and the local connection will be under the control of Todd Mitchell, KG4VVO. Anyone needing to use the repeater for emergency traffic will be able to access it during the net. This net lasts 30 minutes to an hour. We have had praise for Mobile’s involvement in Hurricane communications, and hope this will improve our emergency procedures, as well as allowing us to use the .82 as a backup if the other local EchoLink repeaters go down.

JULY MEETING -- 2ND FRIDAY; FLEA MARKET

The July meeting moves to the second Friday, July 11, due to Independence Day. The second half of this meeting will be a Ham Flea Market. If you have any equipment you wish to sell / swap / just get rid of, bring it to the meeting. If you are looking for anything, or just like looking, come and bring a like-minded friend. These events are always a lot of fun.

Are You Storing Any MARC Equipment?

Dear MARC Members:

As you know if you have attended recent club meetings, or read the minutes
in The Flutter (you do read the minutes if you cannot attend the meeting,
don't you???), MARC has rented a climate-controlled storage unit to house
club equipment. This means that club members no longer need to store club
equipment at their homes, possibly annoying their spouse and running the
risk of said equipment ending up at the curb on trash day.

If you are in possession of any MARC equipment, please contact President
Todd Mitchell, KG4VVO, to arrange for its removal to the storage unit.
Current and former Officers / Trustees, please take special note and try to
remember if you have any stored equipment, or if you know of any other

Free Technician Class - August 2008

The two-day Amateur Radio Technician Class will take place on August 16 & 23, 2008;
from 7:30 am SHARP until 4:30 pm on both days. The location is St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church 6100 Cottage Hill Rd, Mobile, Alabama.

Each student must purchase prior to class the ARRL book “The
ARRL Ham Radio License Manual” (ISBN: 0-87259-963-
9) #9639 -- $24.95. This book can be purchased at www.arrl.org,

This course is co-sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and
the Southwestern Alabama ARES Group; there is NO fee for the
course, however, pre-registration is REQUIRED. The form can be

We will have an ARRL forum starting at 11:00 at the Mobile Hamfest & Computer Show. The forum will be led by Greg Sarratt, W4OZK (ARRL Southeastern Division Director). No reservation is required, and all are invited to attend.
