If I had a dollar for each time someone said that social media was a waste of time, I would be Midas’ little sister right now. I have heard this mostly among work at home business people and small business owners and I understand why. If you have invested a lot of time to Facebook or Twitter and have not seen a lot of results, it is easy to think that all social media networks, including Google + is just a waste of your valuable time. And you will not be alone in that assertion. In fact, a recent survey of small business leaders carried out by Hiscox, a small business insurance company found out that 47 percent of them do not use social media for business purposes at all.

But the fact that you did not get results when you tried promoting your business on any of the social networking sites does not mean that they are a waste of time. It could just mean that maybe you were not using these sites the right way. That is not the fault of the social media networks; like any tool, you need to learn the correct and optimal way to use these sites. For those with a limited marketing budget, social media can be your best friend but first you need to learn how to leverage the wonderful potentials.

There are reasons why people have said that social media marketing does not work and if you are one of those with that opinion, your reasons are probably valid. With social media it is almost impossible to calculate your return on investment (ROI). Updating your status, replying comments, sharing content – these all take up too much of your time. An author with a blog actually lists a number of reasons why social media is a waste of precious time and says that while 2-3 hours of entertainment on social media is fine, any more will be a total waste. And I agree with her to some extent. If all you are doing while on social networking sites or making use of other social media is entertainment then she is right; it would be a colossal waste of time. But you are business people and what others might consider a waste of time, you know is market research. Here are examples of what this blog author called ‘time wastage:’

Kids going to school, teenagers going to college are spending most of their time in chit chatting with their friends, playing online games onto the social media sites. FB, twitter etc sites are in some way or the other is a type of addiction. We share each and every minute information over there like- Out of town.., Its so boring here.., Going for a date, etc.

This is where the strength of social media comes in; it allows you to discover the addictions of your niche market and create products to satisfy those. Waste of time? I think not. This is where a lot of people miss it with social media marketing (SMM). As a small business owner, you spend time marketing so that you can increase sales and when you do not see immediate results it is tempting to give up on SMM completely and no one would blame you. But SMM works and a real life example comes from Niall Harbison and Lauren, the owners of Simply Zesty a blog that teaches how to use free online tools to grow your business. This is how they summarize their experience with using social media:

Social media is cheap and allows you to meet people in a fraction of the amount of time that it would take in “the real world”. If you don’t have a budget and things are tight you should have a look into using social media to market your business, it’s hard work but it does work.

And they are right; it really does work however before you make the decision to forget SMM you need to first of all understand what it is all about.

What is Social Media Marketing?

Different marketers have differing definitions of social media marketing but after reading up of many others and from my own experience, this is my definition of social media marketing:

Social media marketing is a way for businesses to promote their products and services by building brand recognition through relationships with their target audience.

I deliberately highlighted certain words because they are crucial to what social media marketing is all about. If you are operating as a business on a social media site you need to take your eyes away from short-term sales. What you are after is long-term repeat sales and you do not achieve that by bombarding your audience with sales copy. If all your updates are ‘buy this’ and ‘buy that’ then you are quickly going to lose a following or get tuned out. There are several voices shouting to be heard in social media sites; how do you stand out of the crowd and reach your audience?

First you need to identify your target audience. If you are a home business selling beauty products or anti-aging products, there is no point marketing your business to a group of building maintenance professionals. It isn’t that they don’t use beauty products but that is just a gamble. You will have better results marketing to young college students or moms. So know who your target audience is.

Once you have identified your target audience, you need to build a relationship and that does not happen if all you are doing is selling to them. These days, people prefer to buy things from those they have a sort of relationship with. This involves commenting on their posts, sharing their content and sharing helpful tips and content. The Golden Rule with social media is to remember that it is not all about you. Before I go into how you can use social media for effective results, let’s first of all establish why you need social media.

The internet is full of a lot of great free resources and one of the sites I like to go to for resources on marketing is Inbound Media University. One of the major names in social media marketing, Chris Brogan delivered a great lecture which I would like to share with you. Some highlights from that lecture include this quote:

“Community is not really about you, your product or anything else related to your goals … except insofar as you serve to power theirs”

Why You Need Social Media Marketing

Notice I did not say ‘why you might want to try social media marketing’ but why you NEED it. And if you are the owner of a home based business, you do need social media marketing. SMM is a tool that several large organizations and established companies are leveraging for all it’s worth. A good example is Coca Cola. For a lot of these companies, their marketing budget is larger than several home businesses combined, yet they still make use of SMM. If these large companies, with their huge marketing budgets, are still making use of SMM, which is largely made up of free tools why should you not make the most of SMM? As a home business owner, you stand a better chance of making more of an effect on social media than most big companies. Michael Stelzner from Social Media Examiner created this report on how marketers are using social media to grow their business. The report stated that from the surveys carried out, the number one benefit of social media marketing is standing out in an increasingly noisy world. Read the report below.

Social Media Marketing Report 2011

Now on to the benefits:

Social Media is Free: If you are using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google +, you do not have to pay a dime for these services. They are free and provide a great platform for marketing your products. As a work at home mum working as a freelance writer, I did not have the dollars to advertise my skills on the web so I turned to social media. Even when I grew and needed to hire writers for my team, social media made it possible to get good writers without spending anything to advertise.

Social Media Presents a Level Playing Field: It doesn’t matter how many thousand dollars big company has for marketing, when it comes to social media they are on the same level as those who have no money for marketing. It is a level playing ground; we all have the same opportunities available to us.

Social Media Gets You Directly to Your Target Audience: And this is probably one of the most valuable benefits of SMM. With social media sites, we can interact directly with our target audience and get to know how we can solve their unique problems. Just a tip: Your product or service should be built around serving a need or you might find any kind of marketing a waste of time.

Social Media Lets You Build a Community: Some of the greatest friends I’ve made have been through social media; Facebook, Twitter and blogging. You can build a community of people who are interested in you and what you have to offer. They care when your child is sick, when you are down with a cold or when you need to raise money quickly through a sale. They do this for you because they know that you also care about them. Social media creates an avenue for relationship building like we haven’t had before.

You can build a brand and get a loyal brand following: People do not care about what you have to say until they know how much you care. Okay, so that’s a cliché but like all clichés, there is more than an element of truth there. Fact is, people don’t want to buy from just anyone. They prefer to buy from a brand they can identify with. I heard this analogy from Tiffany Dow; she basically says that although you want to buy a Ford and that is a brand, you will most likely choose to buy it from the Car Sales man who runs a friendly business, gives you great deals and has a great attitude. Or something like that anyway. Social media makes it possible for you to communicate your mission statement and to actually live it.

Create Significant Partnerships: Business is all about collaboration. No matter how good you are, you cannot make it on your own in business. We all need partners at some point or the other. If you are a work at home mom meeting people you can form partnerships with can be a challenge. Or it used to be a challenge before social media came in and made things that much easier. However you need to market yourself and your business because that is how your potential partners can get to know you.

How Can You Effectively Make Use of Social Media to Market Your Business?

Social media here involves social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and Google+ – I don’t really understand exactly how Google+ works but I am learning and when I do, I will share with you. Social media is not just limited to social networking sites, this term also incorporates blogs and video. Basically any medium that allows for mass interaction can probably be termed ‘social media.’ So if I say these media works for marketing (and I do), how can you leverage them so that it reflects in your bottom line? Well, if your bottom line is all about instant cash then you are right; it will not work. When you are working with social media what you need to remember is that if you ever have to sell your business, the good will is also an asset that can increase the value of your business. That said here are some tips for using social media to market your business.

1. Search for people in your niche: Your network will definitely grow beyond your niche eventually but it is best to start with those in your niche or in related niches. To practicalize this, when you open a twitter account don’t go about randomly following people. Focus on your niche and those in your industry. They are the people who would most be interested in what you have to say.

2. Build relationships: go out of your way to reach out to people. Retweet other people’s tweets. Link to posts from other bloggers in your blog post. Tag people on Facebook. Join relevant groups on LinkedIn and get to mingle with people. Be genuinely interested in others and learn to offer help.

3. Be people-centric: Do not make it about you. Social media marketing is ALL about your network. Strive to provide useful and helpful information for them. Sure it is fine to promote your stuff once in a while but keep it down to the barest minimum. Instead take an interest in those in your network and they will be more inclined to get to know you better and to visit your site.

4. Focus on the long-term: And I think this is where some of you miss the whole social media marketing thing. Expecting results immediately will only lead to frustration. Results often do not show up for years but when they do, you would have created a loyal brand following that would follow you anywhere you go.

Tips for Using Social Media to Market Your Small Business

With that in mind, here are some tips for effectively using social media for your small business marketing:

Have a Facebook Page (it could be for your business or for you). Have a personal voice on your page; go out and interact with people in your industry.

Create an engaging LinkedIn Profile and network in groups. There is this a great article on Problogger.net by Farnoosh Brock. He talks about how you can really use LinkedIn and though his focus is on gaining opportunities for your blog, the principles are the same. His tips are great and you can implement them immediately; Read them here.

Engage on Twitter. Don’t just tweet about you and your business, tweet about the great things others are doing too. Retweet. Reach out to others and engage.

Relate with your network. This is true for every network but is particularly relevant for your blogs. REPLY COMMENTS. Your readers are important; treat them that way.

Be yourself. People want to engage with your brand and as a small business, that is mostly you. So be true to yourself, let your voice be heard in everything you do. You don’t have to be all sugary and sweet every time. Let your passion about things shine through.

Controversy is good and you can use it to draw attention to yourself. BUT do not merely create controversy where there is none just for the attention. Even if you are controversial you do not have to be obnoxious about it. Be gracious when others disagree with you.

Be honest. Your readers (network) are not really interested in knowing how great you are and how successful you have always been. They want to know that you know where they are coming from and understand their needs because you have also been there. They want to identify with your brand.

Instead of focusing in making immediate sales instead, focus on your target customer and use social media to seek to understand the needs, passions and cravings of that customer then tailor your products/services accordingly.

Don’t forget to block time for your social media marketing. It is an important part of your business so schedule it in like you would other aspects of your business.

Create a social media marketing strategy: How many sites are you going to work with? Why? Is your target market there and how do you plan to engage with them? How many hours a week do you plan to spend on social media marketing? HAVE A PLAN.

Mhairi Petrovic a business owner who teaches social media seminars for small businesses gave this advice in the Montreal Gazette: “Take a step back and understand who you are trying to reach and why are you using these technologies. Is it to build traffic to a website? Communicate with an existing network? Or reach a new audience? It’s important to understand these things before you start.” This is called having a plan or a strategy.

These tips are not inexhaustible. There are several ways you can use social media marketing to grow your home based business however, if you apply the principles in this article, you will most likely see an improvement in your marketing efforts. You can choose to ignore them of course and continue using social media as your own personal soapbox. Or you could ignore it altogether. You will either keep getting the no-results you have been getting or you will have to spend a small fortune in marketing your home based business and who knows how well that will work. As a home business owner, what do you have to lose? Can you really afford to not give SMM a try?

I am interested in your take on this. What has been your experience marketing with social media?

Are you one of those who really wants to start a home business but is holding back? There might be several reasons you might give but most of it boils down to fear. Fear that you might not be so good at the business, fear that it might fail and fear that no one will want to buy what you offer. The last one is probably the most common fear.

When I decided I was going to make money online, I knew that I wanted to offer services. I searched inside of me for what I could offer and I came up blank. Sure I knew how to write and I love writing, but I felt that with so many writers in the U.S, U.K and Australia, why would anyone want to pay an African living in Malaysia to do their writing? So I kept putting it off. Eventually though, it got to a stage where the need was greater than the fear and so I bit the bullet. My only regret is that I did not do so earlier. Now I do not just offer writing services, I sell private label rights articles and guess what? People BUY!

What I’m trying to say here is that there are people who will buy what you have to sell.

One of the great things to sell is info products. People pay a lot for information. There are several objections I have heard from people; reasons why they do not feel that anyone would buy their info product and I want to address each one here.

I don’t know enough to write about

This is the most common I hear and it is really funny particularly since it comes from a lot of moms. You know more than enough to write about. You are raising your kids aren’t you? Plus, you prepare their meals and feed them? You entertain them and buy their clothes? Prepare them for kindergarten and see them through puberty and it’s attendant issues? Well guess what? You know PLENTY about parenting and many new parents need your wisdom to see them through the maze that is parenting.

Maybe you don’t want to write about parenting or how to entertain a 3 year old; you could write an eBook on cooking tips and whatnot. Or home organization. There are just so many things you can write about. If you are passionate about crafts or hiking, chances are there are several other people who are equally passionate about it and would like to learn some more; maybe your own unique tips.

And what you don’t know you could easily research. The internet is full of free information that you can put together to add something extra to your own information product. Which brings us to the second objection.

No one is interested in what I do know

Is that right? But you are interested in what others know; you buy books, read reports and visit blogs and websites. Well, most people are like you and are constantly searching for information in topics that interest them.

Another variant I hear of the ‘no one is interested’ reason is this one: why will anyone pay for what I’m offering when they can get it free on the internet?

This is a great question and there are several reasons why people will do that. I actually stumbled on a discussion in an internet marketing forum I frequent, the Warrior Forum, and these were the reasons offered by real people:

they would pay for your product because they do not have the time to scour the internet for the product;

they would pay for your product because it is convenient;

they would also pay if you have taken scattered information and put it into one coherent bundle;

Plus some others will pay because they do not even know where to begin looking for such free information.

Does that answer your question? If you need further reasons you can read the thread yourself right here.

But I don’t know how to write

This is my personal favorite. Everyone knows how to write but not everyone has the inclination. The funny thing is that many of the books you see out there were not actually written by the names on the cover page (Gasp!) That is where ghostwriters come into play; they have been there since publishing became a lucrative business. You can take your idea, give it to a ghostwriter and have them do the actual writing for you. Just make sure you own the copyrights to the book.

But what about when you cannot afford a ghostwriter? And this is a very real consideration because if you are interested in quality writing you have to pay for it. One alternative a lot of people consider is using PLR materials. These are articles (or even an eBook) that has already been written, only the PLR is sold. This means that you can take the eBook and claim ownership and even sell it and make money. If they are articles on your topic of interest, you can compile them into an eBook.

Why would anyone want to do this? What is in it for the person selling? Well, the very nature of PLR means that several other people can buy that same eBook (or article pack) and claim ownership to it. So the seller gets to sell to as many people as he or she wants.

To make the best use of PLR there are a few things to keep in mind:

Read the license. Some PLR vendors have restrictions on the use of their PLR; it makes good business sense to check that out and be sure that you can actually make money from what you buy. Read their TOS.

Search for sellers who limit the quantity of the PLR books or articles they sell. This means that what you are buying hasn’t been bought by the whole world and their cousin.

Tear the PLR apart. Add your voice, delete some part, re-write as much as you can. The important thing is that the research has been done for you and the basic framework provided. So it’s left to you to make yours as unique as you can and that means adding your own perspective and experiences to the mix.

So, do you still think you cannot set up your own info product business? Think again. You have it in you. Get rid of the fear and JUST. DO. IT.

And I bet there are some of you who are that way too, especially the work at home moms. I have spoken to several home business people who are obviously passionate about what they do but have a real problem with sales. Unfortunately, if you are going to be successful in your business, you cannot do without selling.

I have come to realize that the problem is not really with selling but more with your conception of what sales means. When we think of sales, what comes to mind most of the time is a graphic image of those sleazy sales persons who show up at our door. Or those who keep calling at mealtimes and won’t let you just BE.

But what you may or may not realize is that you are constantly selling; whether you know it or not. You sell your skills, you sell an image and you sell your products. What you need to learn is not so much how to sell but how to sell the right way. You need to take control of your selling.

You do not need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to sales. There are those who have gone before you and made a success of selling; they understand the game. Study these people. Learn what they did right and what they did wrong. I read this article by Steve Strauss, which really resonated within me that I wanted to share with you. It will not turn you into a super sales person overnight, but it will show you how the way to go. 7 Ways to Up Your Sales Game will show you 7 tips you can apply immediately as you market and sell your products or services.

If you run an online business you know that to a large extent, sales depends on where you show up on Google, which is influenced by how well you conduct your marketing. Online marketing involves making use of articles to drive traffic to your site. This requires a lot of articles. The big internet marketers usually pay freelance writers to do their writing for them. But freelance writers do not come cheap so what do you do if you are a work at home mom who cannot afford to pay a freelance writer?

You use royalty free PLR articles. PLR stands for ‘private label rights’ and these are articles that are sold to several people but which each person can customize and claim ownership to. Even the big name internet marketers are beginning to make use of PLR articles these days. The major problem with these articles though, is finding a provider that creates high quality content. There is nothing as frustrating as spending money on articles that you cannot use.

Most PLR vendors have sample articles for you to try so that you can determine the quality of their products. Don’t be afraid to use PLR articles, they save you the time and trouble of researching and writing articles. All you need do is add your own slant to the articles you buy so that they become yours.

On that note there is this PLR sales I would like to tell you about. It’s not mine, but I can vouch for the quality of the articles. Unfortunately the sales are ending today, in a few hours.

There are several PLR packs to pick from and some are so heavily discounted that you can actually buy a PLR pack for $1. It is a great deal because the articles are all very well written. If you hurry and are lucky, you could get all 180 articles at 85% discount; that is $27. This is for the first 20 buyers only so you would have to hurry before they are all gone. The link to go to is Pre-Holiday PLR Blowout.

As a disclaimer I will get a commission if you purchase anything from this link. Just thought you should know

Just a few days ago, our son, Jaiden was born. Seeing him for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience for me. He looked so much like his sister when she was just born but is clearly already an individual. Even though he’s just a couple of days old, he is already precious to me. I wanted to share how much he means to me with you through this picture his daddy took of him in the hospital. He is soo cute.

My little girl and boy are the reason why I work so hard in my business. I don’t just want to chase after money and fame, I would like to build a lasting legacy for my kids. When I first began building my online business, I knew why I was going into business but it was a lovely lady that helped me to articulate this. And now she has a book published that does even more than that. Carrie Wilkerson has been teaching people how to find the purpose in their lives and use that to build online businesses.

This is an excerpt from her newly published book The Barefoot Executive:

Money is never enough. The money will never, ever be enough.

The “why” behind the money, the “why” behind how you are changing people, the “why” behind what you do is what you are really focused on.

Do you know what your “WHY” is?

You can buy the book by clicking on the cover image below or Download the first chapter for FREE. It will change the way you look at your business.

Now if you are into affiliate marketing or you run a site on Halloween Costumes, you want to check this out.

Tiffany Dow just released a WSO (it’s a special offer where you get a discount the public can’t get) and it’s specifically for a really big hot selling item right now – Halloween costumes.

She created a 30 pack of articles on costumes for babies, boys, girls, men and women – and she discounted it in this offer from $30 (which the public pays) to $17 for those who grab it through this link:

The content is a great mix of trendy costumes and evergreen costumes, so this could benefit you year after year!

Remember, don’t go through the PLR site directly – that will cost you full price! Go through the link below and save $13 off what everyone else has to pay! You can read the titles and word counts for the article pack here:

What do you know about Zumba? If you are a fitness coach you probably know a lot about it. But even if you are not really into fitness, it would be difficult to ignore zumba, especially if you’re like me and spend a lot of time on the internet.

Zumba dance is the new way to lose weight and keep fit without being miserable. It is pure fun even as you sweat it out. The lovely thing about being fit with Zumba is that once you master the moves, you can easily become a Zumba teacher in your neighbourhood and make some money from that.
A couple of friends and I recently went to watch the last of the Harry Potter series. It was wonderful; action packed and emotionally wrenching. Harry was indeed a hero. But what similarities exist between Harry Potter’s character and your business character? I’ll get to that in a moment.

The week before I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2, I read the Next Level Blog that talked about the qualities of servant-leadership and how Harry Potter displayed those qualities. The qualities listed were:

Listening

Empathy

Healing

Awareness

Persuasion

Conceptualization

Foresight

Stewardship

Commitment to people’s growth

Building community

They make up the qualities of a servant-leader and Harry Potter displayed most, if not all, of them. To fully understand the concept, a servant leader is one who is there to serve the people he or she is leading. It is not all about being the top dog but is about meeting the needs of those who work with you. This builds loyalty.

Each of these qualities are essential if you are to build a business where people are loyal, not to your product or your current giveaway, but to your brand. That means that regardless of what you are selling (a service, info product or physical product) people would rather buy from you than from anyone else. Always.

To further break it down, these are some ways in which these qualities can impact directly upon your business. If you think of others, do leave a comment.

Listening: When you are in business, you are not about selling what you think your customer wants but what they actually do want. To determine this, you would need to listen to the customer to find out what they are asking for. There are several ways you can listen; you could use Twitter to listen in on conversations (e.g. build lists on Twitter), you could do a survey or poll of your customers and you could also run a blog where your customers can drop comments and you get to know just what they want. The important thing is that you are listening to them.

Empathy: This is the ability to put yourself in the unique situation that a person is experiencing and feel what that person feels. This is much like wearing a person’s shoes… When you can enter into the thoughts or feelings of your customers then you are able to serve them by meeting them exactly where there is a need.

Healing: In your product development, your products should be geared towards healing a problem of your customers. It could be a personal problem or a business one; it could even be a problem that does not seem very serious (that’s where empathy comes in because you enter into their feelings). Whatever you do should be designed to meet a need.

Awareness: How aware are you of what goes on in your customer’s mind? Do you know the business models of your target market and the attendant problems they face? Lack of awareness can cost you in sales but more in customer loyalty. Learn to listen, empathize and strive to meet the needs of your customers. This first of all starts with awareness.

Persuasion: If you have ever sought to make a sale, you are definitely familiar with this one. The need to persuade your customers to buy what you have. There are two secrets to that though:

If you encompass the above points in your business development, you will not need to spend too much energy on trying to persuade people to buy your products; they already NEED them.

You are only as persuasive as your convictions. People are smart and most are intuitive. Your conviction will come across and if you do not believe in the product you are selling, don’t even bother. You cannot even persuade yourself there is no point trying to persuade someone else.

The other points will be treated in a second post so Subscribe to WAHM PLR Blog by Email and receive it in your inbox.

There is so much to learn from Harry Potter and while he might be seen simply as a hero or in the leadership capacity, the fact is, the author put in a lot of thought into developing a well-rounded character. She was aware of what her target market wanted in a hero and delivered it splendidly.

Take some time to take stock. What changes can you make in your business to reflect these qualities? Please leave a comment okay? I also need to listen
