In other good news, this month Disney added Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg as a member of their Board of Directors. The strategic move puts Disney’s foot in the door with Facebook’s 400 million users. This will help Disney better utilize social media and viral capabilities for all of Disney’s content.

Meanwhile, at Disney’s annual company meeting this month CEO Bob Iger said “There are no guarantees in terms of what will remain part of our company and what will not.” Mr. Iger’s gesture was a sign that breaking off units of the company could be a strategic tactic to unlock shareholder value. According to Adweek, the rumors swirling on the street point to the possibility of Disney selling the ABC television network in the near future.

However, a huge source of potential revenue for Disney could come by taking the NCAA College Basketball Tournament rights from CBS (see my other Edge article: http://wallstcheatsheet.com/trading-markets/the-top-10-reasons-cbs-is-back-for-march-madness/?p=8051/). Disney could pipe the March Madness fervor through the ESPN TV and ESPN360 online platforms. It’s a natural fit after ESPN turned Sunday night football into one of the most popular shows on all of television.

There are a lot of positive catalysts in the pipes for Disney. Keep your eye on the Magic Kingdom … it may just yield you a magical return on your investment.

Disney is Putting the Magic Back into Their Kingdom

China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) recently reported that China’s electricity consumption in January 2010 grew 40.14 percent year-over-year to 353.1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWhs). That’s the sound of a lot more factories running or residential air conditioners humming.

Moreover,the US Department of Energy offers a glimpse of China’s voracious appetite for oil:

Looking beyond the details, the general theme is China needs more resources, and they need them now. Just like Friday night bank failures in the US, over the years expect to see China cut more deals like the one with Rio Tinto in the background of our busy lives.

Is China the Next Global Resource Glutton?

The important point to note is that deflationary forces lead to hyperinflation. Once again, it is not demand, bank lending or increased velocity. Those things do not trigger severe inflation; they merely can be a symptom after the trigger. And by the way, increased velocity is basically another form of increased demand. Fundamentally, they are no different.

Is anyone paying attention to the first domino in the sovereign debt crisis? Take a look at this Bloomberg Story:

Iceland’s Economy Shrinks 8% as Prices rise by 11%. Deflationary forces are causing severe inflation, as Iceland’s government is bankrupt. Moreover, bank lending in both the US and the UK has been sliding, yet we see price inflation increasing in the UK and starting to pickup in the US. Even amidst deflation in the private sector, Gold has risen to an all time high against both the Dollar and the Pound and also the Euro.

The deflationists have it backwards. As we’ve illustrated, severe deflation is what leads to hyperinflation. Debt crisis’ go hand in hand with currency crises. In fact, if we had an increase in bank lending, consumption and velocity, we’d be assured we wouldn’t have hyperinflation. We’d end up with rising price inflation for certain, but not hyperinflation. Hyperinflation has never occurred at a time of strong or growing demand.

So what is the real debate then?

The debate and discussion should be about the bond market. If one were against the hyperinflation scenario, then they would have to think the bond market is going to hold up. If one believes we will see severe inflation then they have to believe in a major break in the bond market. We don’t believe in Weimar or Zimbabwe style hyperinflation. That is just too extreme. We do believe that we will see severe inflation worldwide as a result of a loss of confidence in governments and currencies. Falling bond markets and rising interest rates will reflect this.

For Gold watchers, now is the time to start watching the relationship between Gold and bonds. According to Wikipedia, the worldwide bond market is $82 trillion and the US bond market is $34 trillion. Clearly, the crowded trade is bonds. Gold’s bull market will accelerate when money starts to move out of bonds and into Gold.

First let’s take a look at a Gold/Bonds ratio. This is Gold against the Barclays Corporate Bond Index. Against stocks, Gold us up more than five-fold, yet against this bond index, Gold is up less than three fold.

Here we show Gold against the Dow Jones Corporate Bond Index, which is a total return index. Gold has broken past its 2008 peak against literally everything except the Yen and Corporate Bonds.

A breakout in this ratio will be very significant for global capital markets. If and when we see Gold breakout against Corporate Bonds, it will be a major signal that inflationary expectations are increasing. Moreover, it should be a major catalyst for Gold as the fixed income markets dwarf the tiny Gold market.

Don’t Be a Fool: Watch the Bond Market, Not Bank Lending or Velocity

If the NIT loses the best 31 teams in their tournament, they might as well put their brand on a high school tournament. High school basketball has risen to the ranks of ESPN prime time coverage of the hottest future pros in the country. There is lots of money to be made in that emerging space.

I’m not sure what the backend politics are, but if I were the NIT I’d ring my attorney to see whether the NCAA move is an anti-trust violation. This is America: when in doubt, sue.

Personally, I don’t care whether the NCAA expands their field of teams. They know they have a built-in, emotional captive audience for each team — so, it’s a brilliant way to monetize school spirit.

In order for the NIT to survive, they may want to bring their grievance before economic high priest Ben Bernanke. In a last ditch effort, the bubble king may thwart the NCAA’s move simply to prevent a further drop in economic productivity near the Ides of March. Like the surprises and upsets on the hardwood, anything is possible in Washington.

Exclusive Podcast: Sports Gambling Expert Rob Pizzola Offers His Secrets for Picking NCAA Tourney Winners

The sizable beat could be an indication that recent positive retail sales data is the real deal, at least to an extent, as sales numbers came in better-than-expected all around the world.  North American revenue increased 1% on a 6% increase in apparel sales and Western European revenue increased 4% on an 8% increase in footwear sales.  Revenues out of emerging markets & China increased double-digits.  Moreover, gross margins expanded to 46.9% from 43.9%, primarily due to a roll-back in discounts and variations in the product mix.  Inventories were down 13%.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t all good, as sales dropped 7% in Japan and 8% in Central and Eastern Europe.  Furthermore, Nike’s robust results came on the heels off worse-then-expected results from two of its main rivals, Adidas and Puma.  The latter may be a positive or a negative for Nike, depending on the perspective you choose to take.  On the one hand, Nike may be prospering at the expense of its rivals, but one the other hand, Adidas’ and Puma’s weakness may be indicative of a retail climate that still has a ways to go.

Overall, things are looking good for Nike.  Whenever a company of its size hits an all-time high, it’s a meaningful event.  After all, it takes a lot of money to push a stock like Nike up as far as it has gone over the past month, indicating significant institutional sponsorship.  By the time the market opens Thursday, the stock may be almost 5% above its previous all-time highs, so you may want to exercise some caution before jumping right in.  However, if you believe the market is going to continue its uptrend over the short- to intermediate-term, it’s definitely feasible to think these shares can touch $80.
