Unfortunately, Wachovia can do as it damn pleases. Wells Fargo just bought it and it's not receiving fed bailout funds. On the other hand, why don't you let the public know what the other big fish on wall Street have contributed to political causes/

Earlier today, AIG announced an important policy change – one that we wanted to be sure you knew about.

A short time ago, our Chairman and CEO Ed Liddy said that he has ordered the immediate cancellation of all outside meetings, conferences, and recognition events across AIG, except those that are required by law or that are deemed absolutely critical to sustain our ongoing business needs.

Given AIG’s commitment to our customers, business partners, regulators, and American taxpayers, coupled with the new and very different challenges our company now faces, we take these responsibilities extremely seriously. Their trust is critical to our success. We recognize the need to be sensitive about all company expenditures.

As we move forward, we will continue our focus our efforts to pay back the $85 billion loan from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your blog’s efforts to share this information with your readers.

Best,

I agree.......cancel the bailout (both of them), reqire these slimes to repay the expenses , take most of it from tubby and let them go down the tube. Don't expect Paulsen to ask as he has no idea what he's doing. Has anyone seen Lee Iacocca?

This will be a really kick for RIM. If RIM is additional able to deliver this model right in time also to the European market, it will be much more successful than the IPHONE at least within the business sector. I heard from a start prize of 999$ - is that true?

I personally don't care who the spa vacation was really for and if it was planned months ahead of time. They were bilking the system well before now and before the bailout. I think they should take back the bailout and take that 440,000 spent on the spa vacation from the paychecks of the execs themselves. Greedy, lying bastards!

More information has come to light now, and the whole story seems to have been mis-reported - the event was for independent life insurance agents, NOT for AIG employees: see http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/aig-clarifies-agent-meeting/story.aspx?guid={E435AAE7-CB13-4E78-863E-B7E9F77E176B}&dist=hppr

Specifically the paragraph:

"The event, mischaracterized as an "Executive Retreat," was held by one of AIG's insurance subsidiaries for independent life insurance agents, not for AIG employees. These agents were top business producers for the company, and of the more than 100 attendees, only 10 were employees of the AIG subsidiary who were there to represent their company. No AIG executives from headquarters attended. The meeting was planned months before the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's loan to AIG."

Right now, the fed funds futures market is predicting with 100% certainty that the Fed will cut short-term rates by another 25 basis points (0.25 percentage point) at the next scheduled monetary policy meeting on October 29. NB: The futures market foresaw today's Fed action, predicting that the Fed would cut rates by 50 basis points in an emergency meeting.

Oh yea, also, it is too bad the media has propagandized the mindless ignorant American public.
Most of whom are more concerned with Paris Hilton and Jason Priestly on 90210 than the fact that they should pay attention to the backgrounds and records of these candidates. God I hope we wake up and see the socialists we are handing our government too.

Are these execs just stupid? They obviously have no conscience, how could they enjoy themselves knowing what they were doing would be rebuked when they got home from their vacation? Like Bill O'Reilly says McCain needs to vow to AVENGE the American people for crap exactly like this. Obama never will because these fat cats want him in office so they can continue their un-regulated excess and rape of the American peoples retirement funds.

Well done episode and the picture placements were very clever (give that behind the scenes person a raise). It's tough to find humor in this subject right now, but thanks for continuing to do so - its needed.

Can someone explain to me how throwing HUGE debt at HUGE debt is supposed to strengthen our economy? We're using $700 billion in money our government doesn't have to buy up loans and mortgages from banks who don't have the money in hopes of saving the people who borrowed money they didn't have.

Three card monty anyone? Guess which card is the end of the recession and win yourself an economic recovery!

I was waiting for an episode from Wallstrip, now I am going to have a cup of coffee, some chocolate and wait until Helicopter Ben starts flying around.

was hoping you'd go out on the street to do some interviews with people, see if their attitudes have changed... maybe way until DOW hits 8000 :-)

comment from YouTube:
Military operations itself has not direct relevance to the credit crisis on its own right, and note I never intended to link it to the subprime crisis.... however, it does have an impact on the economy and the strength of US dollars, which again would be linked to markets and power of US economy. Greed in deed is one cause, but for subprime, not only bankers/ lenders should be blamed as borrowers have equal responsibility to understand their financial status prior. Regulators/ politicians also

And it's not like people weren't talking about the inflated housing market. Sure, maybe no one thought it would be THIS bad, but maybe it was time for taking on less risk, not more, eh? And certainly not time to repackage and disguise risk and sell it upstream.

No, not omnicient, responsible. And yeah, appraisers - and appraisal fraud - were part of the problem, too. But the problem wasn't that they believed the houses were worth what the appraisers said it was worth. The problem was they believed that the houses were definitely worth what the appraisers said AND that they would continue to rise in value indefinitely. A reasonable LTV ratio for a homeownership loan allows for a roughly 20% drop in value before the bank starts feeling the squeeze. Giving out loans with 95, 100, 103% LTV was essentially a bet that the houses were actually worth a lot MORE than the appraisers said.

Responsible lending practices exist for a reason.

Please allow me to inform you that Timothy Sykes is a hypocrite.

After I discovered severe corruption at Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, I wrote a fully documented message detailing the allegations, which I posted on Timothy Syke's website.

In a very short time, my message was deleted. When I contacted Sykes, his excuses ran the gamut from "the file size was too large" to "the message doesn't fit the theme of our website" to "you don't write good enough".

Timothy Sykes is not a prophet who exposes "manipulative forces at work in companies, the media, ANALysts, etc." as he proclaims. Timothy Sykes is a liar who probably works *for* the manipulative forces as a facade of opposition.

If you would like to receive a copy of my message about corruption at Eurostat that includes graphics, please contact me.

Regarding today's crash: What did anyone expect? The investors have no confidence in these corrupt politicians. This bailout is just one more example of the indivisible handjob stroking irresponsible CEOs and CFOs with billions so that they can run the American economy even further into the ground. So much for Keynesian economics. If the goal is to stimulate the economy, why not give the money directly to the American taxpayers? The government could do twice as much good for the economy by returning half as much money (as the bailout requires) directly to the hardworking American taxpayers. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush administration.

It had been overdue, hadn't it? For years now their business model was basically based on supporting fraud, like allowing private sellers to open stores and getting a powerseller status. Those "private powersellers" however were only competitive as their business model was based on avoiding taxation.
Paypal still is shady as hell when it comes to transparency and adherance to regulations, so it will be interesting to watch how their fiscal year works out as financial markets in general are in turmoil.

I do agree that companies should be allowed to go out of business. Otherwise, we end up with an economic mess like Japan.

I've collected even more references to the pork-filled $700 billion pork-filled "bailout plan" which floats those who caused this mess another chance with our money. As a result, I've setup bailoutpetition.com. Please sign the petition to repeal this disastrous bailout bill. It's the only thing left we can do to show Congress how angry we are and to prevent this colossal disaster. www.bailoutpetition.com

Congress MUST be held accountable for the betrayal of public trust. The bailout as constructed is contrary to the public interest. We are at the mercy, it seems, to FINANCIAL TERRORISM. Wall Street has gone a bridge too far in, greed, deceit, and theft. The FED is awash in cash, which is accessable to banks and yet they refuse to lend money o industries not associated with mortagages. This is a deliberate attempt to hold the world HOSTAGE.

When the DOW fell Monday the money was NOT LOSSED it moved into T- Notes and gold. WE are being HAD and WE, OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN WILL PAY FOR A FEW GREEDY PEOPLE WHO WISH TO DESTROY AMERICA.

May GOD bless America and DAMN those that seek to destroy it.

comment from YouTube:
What are you confused about?

It's a 800 Billion package, 700 Billion to be used in 50 Billion Bites, 100 Billion in Pork and a whole bunch of Business tax Credits to rebate Energy improvement expenses.

It removes Coal Power Plant Emission testings and record keeping by the Utility Or Steel Coal Exhaust and raises the CO2 Out-put Levels.

Foreclosed Property will be bought back from the Mortgage holders and that allows them to reinvest in China or wherever they can get the best returns.

me3tv,
you are for free markets, but because banks were not (and are still not) being held responsible for their actions, they can continue acting in the same way and get bailed out. do you know who pays for that? you do. we all do. with this bailout every man, woman, and child in the U.S. pays $2000 to reward bad banking.
we need a solution, but the solution needs to ensure that the money will go back to the people paying for it.

like the street interviews. want to see some more of them.
on another note, nobody should be surprised that this is happening; it's the american way: unregulated business causes a financial crisis, big business buys everyone out, we all lose, and jp morgan chase makes a lot of money.

OK - pigs on wallstreet. Nothing new there. But the gate was opened up by Clinton admin pushing risky loans to risky people through FRE and FNM years ago. Warning flags by Bush and McCain were ignored. Add some mark to market regulations that kicked the legs out from under asset values and bingo - foreclosures mount and credit dries up for everybody. It sure seems to me like the taxpayers voted in administrations and congress predisposed to make the money easy to borrow. Actually 9-11 was a huge factor because then with markets worldwide in disarray - the gates to push money had to be opened wider still. IT was hard for us taxpayers and our government representatives to think about closing the gate down. It was pig heaven. Given GOVERNMENT was a big factor in allowing the pig fest - I think it is OK for Government to throw out a ifeline. We taxpayers will get our life-ring 800 Billion back in a few years - maybe with a profit and it will not have affected the deficit. Meanwhile - a disaster of a depression that takes us all down is avoided for a mild recession (hopefully no worse than that). I am for FREE MARKETS but it aint a FREE MARKET when government shifts policy to throw money one way or the other. It is a hybrid no matter what we wish it was.

Basically we just added a trillion dollars we don't have to a 3 trillion dollar a year economy. If you're smart you'll trade your money for canadian before you have to figure how many dollars to the peso.

Any bill that extends MORE credit to lenders to who did such a HORRIBLE job of loaning money that it led to this mess in the first place is a BAD idea! It's like giving heroin addicts clean needles so they can get their fix but not as dangerously.

I would never claim to have the answer, NOBODY seems to, but it seems like reform of the banking community and OVERSIGHT should be KEY to this legislation - if we're ALL going to pay, we should get SOMETHING for our nearly TRILLION dollars! Safer more stable and saner bankers would be a start!

BTW - LOVE the "Schoolhouse Rock" clip but now I'm humming the Lolly's Lolly's Lolly's Adverb song! lol!

comment from YouTube:
Bailout? Rescue? Who is going to rescue me? Or you? A few people are going to make huge amounts of money on this deal and we are going to foot the bill. If there isn't any money, then why are so many healthy banks able to buy the healthy parts of the failing banks? And how is it that Warren is able to buy whatever he wants? There is money to lend and to borrow. NOBODY has actually said what our current M1 is right now. We know how many barrels of oil we have. Nice glut.

John,

I don't think a show has to be "earth shattering" or surprising to be great! While all the networks put their spin on the economy and who's to blame, I found the idea of doing a "streeter" with those most effected AND responsible for the crisis to be brilliant! It doesn't have to be Shakespeare to be great!

Julie and I are VERY casual friends online and I feel lucky and privileged to be able to count her as one - if she's not your idea of talented and entertaining then I wonder what show your watching? Difference of opinion is what makes this country great - I find a GREAT deal of substance and knowledge and if you think "Wallstrip" has a different format than it did when Lindsay was hosting, you CLEARLY didn't watch it much when she hosted because she was even MORE irreverent and comical than Julie - and I LOVED the show then as well!

I'm sorry that you don't see the value, production quality and talent involved in creating a daily MUST WATCH! Plenty of people watch this daily and enjoy it! I commend you for at least giving it a try before you criticized it but I have to disagree.

Keep doing what you're doing Julie and Howard, the show has NEVER been better!

If I want gloom and doom, I'll watch Bloomberg news or CNBC!

I still don't see ANY evidence AT ALL that Palin has dismissed evolution or doesn't see it as legitimate science.

I also see NO evidence AT ALL that Palin has pushed for, advocated or even CONSIDERED advocating that Creationism being taught in schools. (I do see evidence that she didn't want the school silencing creation vs evolution debate)

No evidence whatsoever. Although apparently it is fashionable to say so anyway....with a smirk :)

It's not that she doesn't support evolution, she just supports the teaching of creationism alongside evolution...in a science class. Many people think that creationism is a Christian idea and thus should be left in the church. (No one's advocating that the Scientologists' version of creation be taught in schools.)

Here's the quote, from http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles_of_faith/2008/08/sarah_palin_on.html

"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information....Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

I know this might be a lot to ask, but can ANYONE, including Julie, provide me with a link that backs up this claim that Sarah Palin does not support evolution or the teaching of evolution?

I'm really trying to find this....and while a lot of people seem quite willing to make these little verbal jabs, I haven't yet found anyone willing to back them up with facts.

Thanks!

your comment /Jeff Garlick,
I read your comments daily and wonder whether you are watching the same episodes as me. How could you call this "Brilliant?" Are you just infatuated with Julie? These were very simple, very basic questions asked of a few people on the streets. Nothing earth shattering, nothing surprising either. I realize I have been very critical of this show, and have been waiting for improvements, but I believe the format is set. And while it obviously works for you, it doesn't work for me. For me, there is never any substance - no detail, no insight, so real value. I feel the past format and presentation were much better and informational. Julie spends more time attempting to be funny, but never seems to have the knowledge to truly relate any of the stories in an effective way.
Honestly, what is it you see that perhaps I keep missing? I want to like this show, but am disappointed daily.

So the banks were supposed to be omniscient as to housing prices being inflated? Should they hav ignored the appraisals of professional apperaisters, then, because someone at the bank should've known better?

"You ask whose job it is to man the brakes? I say it is predominantly the consumer’s responsibility. I did it for myself without the help of a bank."

Congratulations and a big pat on the back, but you're wrong. Capitalism does not run on morals. It runs on self-interest.

My job, when I am in the market for a loan, is to get the best loan terms I can. The bank's job is to get the best loan terms IT can. I pay for money with interest - they pay for interest with risk. My job is to convince the bank that I can pay and that my collateral is really valuable enough. Their job is to make sure they don't take on too much risk that I actually can't pay or that my collateral is really worthless.

Responsibility and accountability, in the loan world, come in the very concrete form of default terms. You should pay as agreed. If you don't pay as agreed, this is what happens: you lose your collateral and your credit rating. This isn't an honor system and never has been. In fact, it would be really, really dumb if it were.

When a bank has done its job, the loan-to-value ratio and the actual value of the collateral ensure that when any individual consumer defaults, it's either good for the bank, neutral for the bank, or only slightly bad for the bank. When a bank has done its job consistently, the total amount of risk they've taken on ensures that a) everyone they've loaned to is not going to default on their loans at once and b) even if they did, the bank wouldn't fail.

Watch this math:

I take out a loan at 6% interest for $250,000 to buy a house. I buy the house for $300,000 (using $50,000 of my own money - an 83% loan-to-value.)

3 years later, something happens - I lose my job or something. Anyway, I can't pay my mortgage payment anymore. The bank can come in, take my house, kick me out, and sell it to cover their outlay. Who wins?

Well, assuming the my house is still worth about $300,000, the bank does - by a lot. I lose my $50,000 + 3 years of interest at 6% + 3 years of the principal I have been paying. This is why people usually don't default - it's better for them to sell the house themselves and recoup their investment.

And even if the housing market has crashed and the bank can't sell the house for more than $250,000, they still come out about even, a little ahead. They're not going to go broke giving out this kind of loan, no matter how many people are so very much more irresponsible than you and have the nerve to lose their jobs and stop being able to pay their mortgage.

But look at another scenario:

I want to buy the same house. I don't have a lot of cash saved up, so I take out a loan for 100% of the value: $300,000. Let's keep it simple and say it's still a flat interest rate of 6%. My plan is to keep the house a few years, maybe make a few improvements, and then sell it for a profit. Unfortunately, again, after 3 years I lose my job and can't make the payments anymore. What's more, the housing market has crashed.

Now, I can't sell my house for more than $250,000. I still owe almost $300,000. I will default. The bank can come in and sell the house, but they'll still be out $50,000 less whatever interest I've paid thus far. They very much CAN go broke making these sorts of loans. The bank bet on the housing market, and it was a bad bet. An 80% loan-to-value ratio cut off, or a more level-headed appraisal of the property's value - either one would have protected the bank from this loss. It's not a matter of my morals - although it wasn't very prudent of me to take on such a risky loan myself. It's a matter of the bank assuming a bad, bad risk and then getting bitten by it.

And that's not even considering the fancy-pants loans - the ARMs and balloon payments and such that banks were handing out like candy.

Believe me, I'm all about personal responsibility, but to blame this on the consumer is to turn a blind eye to the bank's responsibility, taken on when they entered the lending business, to evaluate risk and make sure their balance sheet adds up.

BRILLIANT interviews and a VERY solid piece Julie!

Nothing cuts to the quick like the views of the public that is effected by this crisis - you don't get this insight from CNBC or the "Big 3" networks nightly news - WELL DONE!

I half expected to hear thuds and see brokers going SPLAT on the pavement but I TOTALLY agree the woman who said now is the time to buy during the clearance sale and I think yesterday showed that SEVERAL agree as well - now if I just had MONEY to spend on investing instead of gas, food, mortgage (mine is SOLID!) and COLA (not Coke or Pepsi)!
