Wallstudio on The Block Fans v Faves

The Block is one of our favourite shows here at Wallstudio. We have been fans for a long time and have been thrilled to have some of our designs included in The Block Shop's online store for the past few seasons.

We were super excited to discover a canvas or two on display in the background of Shelley Craft's Wallpaper challenge on The Block Fans v Faves set in The Block Shop's Pop-Up store in Melbourne earlier this week!

That's right! That's a Bright Pineapple canvas in orange and yellow you can see in the background there!

And that's a Toucan canvas in orange and turquoise sitting proudly to the right of contestants Lyssandra and Alisa!

Mr toucan popped up a few times throughout the show and we couldn't be more proud!

We would like to say a BIG thank you to The Block, for not only supporting Wallstudio and our sister company My Sweet Prints, by also for bringing many great independent artists and designers work to the public's attention! The love goes both ways, we assure you!

Decorating with Grey

Grey is definitely the on-trend neutral right now. We are seeing it pop up in design magazines, TV shows and more everywhere! It is a fabulously versatile tone that can be subtle, or bold. Many people feel grey is a cold tone that leaves a space feeling clinical and uninviting, but we have to disagree. Grey can be tinted to be a warm hue with a yellow or brown undertone, or it can be a cool hue with a blue or purple undertone. But whether you choose cool or warm, grey doesn't have to be cold.

We have selected a few examples from the web to show, how when done right, grey can be an amazing background, or even accent to your home.

We still have the Spring bug here at Wallstudio. We are loving bright colours and bold florals! Bold floral patterns, accessories, wallpaper etc are a great way to bring some live and vibrancy into your home. It is also a great way to add some striking colour to your interiors too. A great thing about bold florals is they aren't as feminine as soft, pretty florals and are a great alternative for the not-so-traditional home!

Spring has arrived in Sydney and all over the city its residents are venturing out into the sunshine. Spring is a time of packing away the old, starting with the new; a time of refreshing, new life, gorgeous blooms and the most beautiful of weather!

We have the Spring bug and are chomping at the bit to while away an afternoon or three in the back yard. We are blessed in Australia to have a culture of relaxed living and spending time outdoors. Every Aussie loves a good outdoor space for dining and living. We have found some gorgeous examples of outdoor spaces, that prove, big or small, there is something wonderful you can do with your outdoor space!

Moody Interiors

We have noticed a trend in Interiors of late. There seems to be a shift towards a dark, moody style of decorating, moving away from the bright, white spaces that have been so dominant over recent years. While light-filled spaces will never be out of fashion, and we feel moody spaces will just be a trend that comes and eventually goes, it feels like quite a luxurious change that we are rather liking!

Dark, matte walls paired with deep chocolate or charcoal floors, mixed with metal and texture, then offset with a bold, bright colour seems to be the order of the day. The style has an opulence to it that seems to hush a room to subtleties in tone and texture that draws you in and invites you to snuggle down for a while.

Meet the newest members of the Wallstudio family. They are colourful, a whole lot of fun and would love to hang out at your place! They are the new Toucan canvas designs and they are available now as part of our Welcome to The Tropics range in our store.

Pixelate Canvas Dining Room Inspiration

I [Amanda] absolutely love the new Pixelate canvas designs Janette has created. They are colourful, bold, fun and fresh. I felt inspired by the colours and the feel of this particular colour way and decided to make it the jumping-off point for creating an inspiration board for a vibrant dining room!

Taking my cue from the canvas, I have selected a mixture of objects that combine both formal and casual elements, a mixture of metals and a couple of shots of bright colour to bounce back the platte of the canvas.

I think the elements combine reinforce the idea of fun, bold and fresh and I know it is a space I would love to not only entertain in, but dine in every day!

New Design: Pixelate

Janette has been hard at work, again, creating a fabulous new design to the Wallstudio Abstract Collection. The new design is called Pixelate and is available in 3 colour ways. The design is made of of many squares of colour to give the impression of a pixelated image that has been zoomed too far in on. The abstract design allows the viewer's imagination to take over and the bold, bright colours are happy and work well with any contemporary space.

Low Hung Art

Generally we tend to hang our wall art at eye level, right? It makes sense and it just tends to be the way everyone does it. Of course, there is more than one way to do most things, and hanging art is no different.

Back in past eras whole walls were often filled with art from crown moulding to skirting boards and while I don't think this look will hit the main-stream again, many design conscious home owners are playing with the placement of their art. Today, let's look at low hung art.

Hanging art on the lower half of a wall adds interest and intrigue. It forces the viewers eye downward, which can change the perception of the room's dimensions, and it also draws in one's attention. It is a clever tool to use for directing the eye around a space and creating interesting points of refuge too.

So when thinking about hanging art in your space, why not consider placing it low on a wall, or even propping it up on the floor, for a unique and interesting display!?

We are excited to announce there are two new designs that have just been added to our Abstract Collection!

The Galaxy Rider is fully of fantasy and wonder. It is available in a variety of colour ways, making it the perfect addition to just about any space be it a child's room, your studio, family room, bedroom or even your bathroom!

Driftaway combines rustic driftwood with on-trend geometrics that are almost tribal. The bright, almost neon, pastels are of the minute and add a fresh twist to the rustic background. There is a coastal feel to this piece yet it would be right at home in an inner city apartment too!

Art Deco Inspired Interiors

Art Deco style has had a major resurgence almost 100 years after it first came on the scene, as the design world embraces this sleek, graphic and geometric style thanks to the immanent debut of Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby movie.

We are seeing touches of deco in fashion, hints of it in typography and pinches of it in interiors, and I [Amanda] couldn't be happier. Deco is one of my favourite styles and having so much reference to it around at the moment is making me smile.

Perhaps you love the style too and want to know ways in which you can combine it with contemporary interior design. Well, we have selected a few examples of spaces we feel combine the then and the now very well.

Art Deco style is moody and glamourous. It took its inspiration from the machines of the day; ocean liners, trains, aeroplanes, cars and their chrome finishes, speedy lines and geometric forms. It was a time of opulence and being showy with mirror and velvet and yet could be quite pared back and minimal too. It is a style that evokes emotion and creates amazing spaces to envelope yourself in!

Hi there! My name is Amanda and I am the newest member of the Wallstudio team! Janette has brought me on board to take care of the social media side of things for Wallstudio. That means I'll be on Facebook and Twitter and will be blogging here on the Wallstudio blog! I have been working behind the scenes for a couple of months now, and thought it was time I introduced myself!

Janette and I actually went to the same primary school and our Mothers worked together when we were younger. We reconnected in recent years when we both attended an ABCD Meet-up! It's such a small world!

I have studied a variety of areas of design including interior design, jewellery design, textile design and more and am a qualified Graphic Designer. I have been blogging since 2009 in various forms in the areas of design, lifestyle and wedding. Just 2 days ago a relaunched my own design and lifestyle blog Kaleidoscope which is the place for creative inspiration, DIY tutorials and exploring the many facets of design. I'd love you to stop by! The weather is changing. The heat of Summer has faded and the cool weather is setting in. However, you can still keep the spirit of Summer alive in your home by surrounding yourself with colour and outdoor feel of indoor plants and terrariums.

The Macrame Magic of Sarah Parkes + Tutorials

I'm sure you have noticed that Macrame is hot right now! It is in all the interior magazines and also is popping up in fashion! I remember, when growing up, that a visit to my Grandmother's house meant bathing beneath her macrame plant holder which was being watched by her macrame owl. It was something I always associated with Grandma - quaint, but a little old fashioned.

Well, no longer!

If the work by Australian Designer Sarah Parkes with her label Smalltown is anything to go by, macrame can be chic and very 21st century! Sarah has created macrame pieces both for commercial and residential spaces ranging from plant holders to room dividers and decorative pieces that are not only unique, but truly beautiful!

Macrame is a handicraft that isn't just for the professionals, it's perfect for a little DIY! So, if you fancy some knotted goodness in your own home, why not give one of these fab tutorials a go? Tiles As Art

There are some areas in the house that are difficult to decorate with art, the bathroom is one, and the kitchen can be tricky too. While it is not impossible to hang art on the walls in these rooms, it isn't always practical. Never fear! Why not use tiles in place of art? Creating an interesting and striking design with tiles is easier than you think - however it my require you to step out of your comfort zone at first, to achieve the desired wow factor!

Of course coloured are perhaps the most obvious choice, however the effect can be anything but standard depending on what tiles you choose. A tile with a amazing shape or pattern can be so effective, so too can solid tiles laid in a unique combination or pattern.

If coloured tiles aren't your thing and you prefer the clean and serene look of white tiles, then why not consider a textured tile? Textured white tiles have such great impact, they give a feel of luxury and quality and it's something a lift unexpected! For something truly unique, you could mix and match a number of different textured and smooth tiles in white, cream and other muted neutral tones. Isn't it beautiful?

Another fabulous option for high impact is metallic tiles! They come in a vast number of finishes, tones and shapes and textures allowing you to create the perfectly unique look for your home. Metallic tiles work equally as well in the kitchen and bathroom and would certainly make doing the laundry feel much more luxurious!

So those areas that are tricky to decorate with wall art can be decorated in a whole new way if you extend the idea of wall art to include your tile choices!
