Use the latest nginx in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

Official version of nginx for Ubuntu Precise is 1.1.19 but the latest available stable version is 1.2.8 (Changes), In this post I will present you how to update to the latest available version.

Thanks to Ondřej Surý, maintainer for some Debian packages, you can have the latest PHP5 maintained by Debian PKG PHP Team in Ubuntu Precise, Quantal , and Lucid.

Just run as root the following to use nginx

add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/nginx
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

You can check that everything went fine

# dpkg -l | grep nginx
ii nginx        1.2.8-1~precise+1 
ii nginx-common 1.2.8-1~precise+1
ii nginx-full   1.2.8-1~precise+1

Use the latest PHP 5.4 in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

11-Apr-2013 The PHP development team announces the immediate availability of PHP 5.4.14 and PHP 5.3.24. These releases fix about 10 bugs aswell as upgrading the bundled PCRE library. All users of PHP are encouraged to upgrade to PHP 5.4.14.

For source downloads of PHP 5.4.14 and PHP 5.3.24 please visit our downloads page, Windows binaries can be found on windows.php.net/download/.

The list of changes are recorded in the ChangeLog.

If the above command is not available, install it using:

Check that the dist-upgrade do not try to update more than needed. After some seconds you can check with

php –v

php –version

That you have the latest version

The Apache POI Project's mission is to create and maintain Java APIs for manipulating various file formats based upon the Office Open XML standards (OOXML) and Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format (OLE2). The Appthority® App Report for February 2013 provides an overview of the security risks behind 100
free iOS and Android apps. Appthority examined the differences between the Android and iOS app
ecosystems; compared app behaviors across five popular app categories (business, education,
entertainment, finance, games); and looked at the developers behind these apps.

Report Highlights

The vast majority of free apps send and receive data to outside parties without encryption.
96% of total apps share data with advertising networks and/or analytics companies.
79% of the top 50 free iOS and Android apps are associated with risky behaviors or privacy
issues. Overall, iOS apps exhibited more risky behaviors than Android apps.
Entertainment apps were the worst offenders out of the top five categories, with the highest number of apps that track for location and share data with advertising networks and/or analytics companies.
While 14% of iOS apps had access to a user’s calendar, none of the Android apps had similar access.
More than half of the total apps track for location by accessing the device GPS or using other location tracking methods.
More than 80% of apps across categories come from different unique, individual developers.

This small plugin for Joomla! add a message inviting iPhone/iPad users to add the web application to the home screen.

Add2Home has been updated to version 1.7.0 for Joomla 3.0 ONLY. For existing users the update will display in the Extensions Manager under Updates. If you do not have this currently installed, you can click the link below and install as normal via the Extensions Manager.

Better default for “Returning Visitor” now set to TRUE… This is a very important feature that I highly encourage you to use (ie: set it to true). To prevent the balloon from appearing once the app has been added to the home screen, remember to set also apple-mobile-web-app-capable to true.

I've been a huge fan of Google Reader for years. I usually start every morning with my coffee and Google Reader...

Note: i am still not decided between Tiny RSS and Newsblur, both are running on my server…

The bad news

We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months. see http://googleblog.blogspot.nl/2013/03/a-second-spring-of-cleaning.html

Get your data

As usual Google do a great job, and let you download your data very easily with Google Takeout. You can get there a copy of ALL of your Reader data:

List of people that you follow / follow you
Items you have starred / liked /shared
Notes and comments

Follow this link to download only your Reader data from Takeout. Your subscriptions are then available in a xml file that can be imported in most RSS aggregators. (see below)
