New Driving Test

In October 2010 there will changes to the driving test.

In the new driving test, there will be a period of driving where the examiner will not give step by step directions.

Either

1. The candidate will be asked to follow the signs to a given destination or
2. A set of instructions will be given (using diagrams where necessary) and the candidate will need to remember the directions and follow the route.

The DSA have announced that steering faults will not be recorded if the candidate fails to hold the wheel at the ten-to-two or quarter-to-three position, or if they fail to use the pull push method of steering that has been taught in the UK for decades. faults will only be recorded if the candidate fails to control the steering wheel adequately

Most driving instructors will be aware that this is merely formalizing what has been a fact for many years. many instructors also believe that pull push is the safest method of steering and will continue to teach this way - after all the instructor is there to teach good driving, not just the minimum required to pass the test!

Latest Theory Test - Case Studies

Following public "consultation", the DSA have increased driving test fees from 30th march 2009.
The new fees are:
Theory Test £31, up from £30

The UK Government have announced that it wants to lower the national speed limit to 50mph on out of town single carriageway roads. This plan would not involve any new road signs but will probably cost a fortune in publicity to make people aware.The varying speed limits for different types of vehicle already cause considerable confusion.

Driving Test Examiner gets damages

A driving test examiner will get damages after winning his case claiming for injuries alleged to have been received during a driving test. Andrew Carmichael claimed that he suffered whiplash following several incidents during the test. These alleged incidents included that the car mounted the kerb, that a "three point turn" became a "nine point turn" and that she braked too sharply due to her careless driving.

The driver had had approximately 30 driving lessons and stated she was "nervous on the day". The claim for £15,000 was made against NIG insurance.

Some driving professionals may wonder how such serious injury could be caused in incidents that involved no collisions with another vehicle!!!!

BSM sold to German firm

BSM has been sold for the second time in 4 years. The driving school formerly owned by RAC has been sold by Aviva to Arques, a German firm. No longer the British School of Motoring then!
