Mobile broadband varies completely from the normal wireless access. It does not need a wi-fi zone or a hot spot, it does not require a WAP service or its not nessasary for a smartphone or Iphone or a black berry. All you need is to subscribe for a mobile broadband connection from your ISP. It provides a DSL quality speed upon feasibility and signal strength in your location. This service is powered by the similar technology used in your mobile phones, either GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications ) or CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). Both use different algorithms that can allow many users to access the same data without interference. The CDMA based technology is called the EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) and the GSM uses HSDPA (High speed downlink packet access). You will be provided with a special PC card or inbuilt hardware which is loaded with either EV-DO or HSDPA. For higher access speeds you have to be within the network range, if not you will be down to 1x RTT standard which functions at a lower speed. The EV-DO runs as a part of the mobile network. It maximizes the data transfer by separating the data channel from the voice channel. But the disadvantage is that it cannot transmit data if you receive a voice call. But the HSDPA can handle both data and voice channel together which helps you to speak through the phone as well as surf the internet. Setting up the connection is not much complicated like the regular broadband. All you have to insert the network device provided by the ISP to the specified USB or PC card slot. The software will automatically get installed into the computer. Type in the username and password provided by your ISP and say “connect”. You are now connected!

Almost all the broadband providers in UK provides mobile broadband service. The list of mobile broadband providers are: T-mobile, Three, Orange, Vodafone, O2, Sky, Virgin Mobile, etc., You can choose your service depending upon the speed, availability, and offers. If you are not convenient to commit for a monthly charge, go for a PAYG (pay as you go) service. Buy a network device from your ISP and top up the device depending on your usage or download. This makes life even simpler isn’t it?

Nokia N97 firmware gets updated: v20

Nokia N97 owners have been patiently waiting for an update of the firmware for a long time, but they don’t need to wait anymore because v20 has been released.

The v20 of the firmware for Nokia N97 has some notable improvements, such as: better touch screen usability; inclusion of Ovi Maps 3.1 with 3D maps; Nokia Email; improved battery performance and video stability; and VoIP support among other details.

New Android SDK released by Google

Good news for developers that create applications on the Android platform, because Google released Android 2.0 also known as Eclair, via the Android Software Developer Kit. So if you’re using the Android kit don’t forget to update the SDK and also the developer’s tools.

This new version comes with new APIs and also new features, some of the fresh capabilities include:

- unified inbox;
- SMS;
- MMS search;
- HTML 5;
- Bluetooth 2.1;
- support for multiple Google/Exchange accoutns;
- new screen sizes and aspect ratios;

Google will release another version of Android before 2010, but for now we don’t have any more details about that upcoming release.

Lenovo shows off IdeaPad and IdeaCentre offerings

Lenovo has some new Windows 7 powered notebook offerings for you to choose from called the IdeaPad and IdeaCenter.

The IdeaPad line, pictured above, will include the 11.6-inch U150 and the 15.6-inch U550 which have both been around for some time but are seeing an operating system revamp and a slight hardware boost.

The IdeaCentre B500 on the other hand will feature a Core 2 Quad processor, 1TB of storage, up to 8GB of RAM, and a 23-inch LCD display. Other than that are the much less exciting K300 and H230 that will make a perfect all-in-one solution for you business folk.

eviGroup shows off 10-inch 3G tablet

eviGroup has today announced an all new 10-inch tablet which they are calling the Pad. Sure, it’s not the fabled iTablet, but it does have 3G and an artificial intelligent digital secretary/assistant that’s sure to get annoying after a few days of use.

Other than that it features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, WiFi, VGA, port 3 USB ports, multicard reader, webcam and microphone.

There wasn’t a mention of a release date but eviGroup is saying the device will be priced below €500.

NASA iPhone App Now Available

For the people who are curious on what lies ahead in space, here is an iPhone app that will perhaps be the closest you can get. The NASA iPhone app gives user exact coordinates on where the International Space Station is and provides satellite images and information all thanks to a mapping software. It even provides pictures and updates from the latest NASA missions. The app is now available for free download.

RIM Unveils BlackBerry Storm 2, Challenges iPhone

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion today unveiled the Storm 2, a new version of its touch screen Storm smartphone, marking its latest move in the battle with Apple’s iPhone.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said the Storm 2 retains the original Storm’s clickable touch screen interface, but improves upon it with faster typing and “multi-touch” capabilities, which allows users to type on more than just one part of the screen at a time.

The Storm, RIM’s first phone without a physical keyboard, was met with limited success when it launched late last year.

Many users complained about its odd typing mechanism — where the whole screen moved with each tap on the virtual keyboard — and claimed that they had to press too hard on the touch screen.

RIM said the new Storm 2 solves that problem with its new SurePress technology — promising that clicking the display will be “effortless” and that device will even know if a finger is “resting” on the keypad or typing.

The handset uses the same “haptics” technology to respond to “gentle pressure” by vibrating — so using on its on-screen keyboard is more similar to typing on a real keyboard.

It also retains the Storm’s built-in 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera, music player and access to BlackBerry App World and BlackBerry Maps — but doubles the memory to 256MB, upgrades to Bluetooth 2.1 and adds Wi-Fi capability.

Verizon, the exclusive U.S. carrier of the Storm 2, hasn’t set a launch date or price, but it is likely to appear in November at around $200.
