The main culprit fingered by the Windows Phone 7 community over this issue (though not named in the statement) is Yahoo! Mail. Windows Phone 7 has special support for Yahoo! Mail allowing it to treat Yahoo! accounts as something more than regular POP or IMAP mailboxes (similar special support also exists for GMail and Hotmail accounts). The other part of the data usage problem is that the data usage is occurring primarily over 3G—which for most users, subject to restrictive network contracts, is a scarce resource—rather than WiFi. Microsoft says that the issues affect only a few percent of Windows Phone 7 customers. The culprit behind some mysteriously high cellular data usage by Windows Phone 7 devices has been attributed to a third-party service, and not necessarily the software OS itself, Microsoft said today.

The company also said that it was at work on ways to fix the problem, which had affected only a "small" percentage of Windows Phone customers:

We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. A small (low single-digit) percentage of Windows Phone customers have reported being affected.

Google has introduced an updated version of its mobile Gmail utility for iPhones or Android-based smart-phones. The update also brings offline support, and smart links for Google Maps, YouTube and Google Docs content.

Google has published its Zeitgeist 2010, ranking top topics based on the billions of search queries made by users during the year. On a global basis, the iPad placed second among "fastest rising" topics, only narrowly trailing Chatroulette. When breaking things down into categories, the iPad topped the global consumer electronics category with the iPhone four taking second place.

Apple as a company ranked eighth among fastest rising news search terms, while its retail stores ranked eighth among rising search terms for Google Maps. Among image searches, the iPhone and iPad took eighth and tenth place respectively. Google today launched its location-sharing Latitude app for the iPhone, making good on a promise nearly two years old.

Google Latitude lets a user share his or her physical location with friends, and locate friends on a map, the company said in an announcement Monday.

"Today's Latitude app was built from the ground up using iOS 4's new multitasking capability to support background updating," said Lambert.
At times, Google and Apple have had a prickly relationship over apps.

In mid-2009, the former submitted Google Voice to the App Store, but Google claimed Apple rejected the program because the call management software replaced some of the iPhone's "core mobile telephone functionality." Google Voice finally appeared in the App Store in November, 17 months after Google submitted the program.

The Google Latitude app for iPhone and other iOS devices is now available in the app store. What the Google Latitude app does is lets your track where your friends are on a map. The Latitude app works on the iPhone 3GS, four as well as the iPod touch (3rd and 4th gen) and the iPad.

Apple posted Google Latitude to its iTunes' App Store on Monday. The app is a free download.

Last night Google's Andy Rubin finally unveiled the tablet-friendly version of the Android OS. Rubin showed off Android 3.0, aka "Honeycomb," on a prototype Motorola tablet—and promptly threw the nascent Android tablet market into further confusion.

Google has always had a weird relationship with its Android manufacturer partners. Most importantly, Google blesses and controls the Android Market, which is the way most third-party apps get sold for Android gadgets.

Google has demoed Google Maps for Mobile 5, a new version of its mapping software on the Motorola prototype tablet. Now, using this new technique, Google will send the necessary information to your phone and the phone will itself render those maps (presumably using the 3D graphics chips that are on the above-mentioned phones). Thus, this feature is not expected to work on your cheap Android phone. Another advantage of using Vector graphics?

There's also offline caching of map data; so in case your network goes out while you're navigating to your location, Google Maps will still route you with just the guidance from your GPS chip.

Chrome OS will be launched as a pilot program that users can register online and, finally, offer pre-installed on a wide range of computers made by major manufacturers such as Acer and Samsung.

The Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone codenamed Sony Ericsson Zeus has appeared in new YouTube videos this weekend. As revealed earlier, the smart-phone features a slide-out game pad, 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-mega-pixel camera and a second-generation Snapdragon chip-set. That said, in-game purchases and free games have proved to improve the odds for success, so we guess game publishers will take advantage of that on the PlayStation phone too.
