25th WA Screen Awards Postponed

FTI’s 40th Anniversary is much more than an excuse to have a party. With a new CEO taking over in 2012, now is the perfect time for FTI to undertake a review of all our products and services to ensure we remain WA’s premiere industry association, dedicated to providing relevant and practical assistance and opportunities for independent WA Screen Artists.

This organisational review includes looking at how we deliver key FTI events such as the WA Screen Awards. In consultation with a variety of filmmakers and experts from all levels of our industry, we want to make sure the 25th WA Screen Awards is the biggest and best yet. With this input we are hoping to attract more media, more entries and a more diverse cross section of the WA filmmaking community, to ensure the event offers more value to all our winners, nominees and guests.

Ultimately this means that a date for the 25th WASA’s will not be announced, and entries will not be accepted, until the review is complete in early 2012. Once the date is confirmed you can rely on FTI, along with all our colleagues and friends in the industry, to be very active in announcing it.

If you’d like any additional information on the 25th WA Screen Awards, or FTI’s organisational review, please fee free to contact myself on michael_ellis@staff.fti.asn.au

Best regards,

Local Stars Shine at WA Screen Awards

Those lucky enough to attend the 23rd WA Screen Awards were given a glimpse of the future of Western Australian film as the local industry celebrated the accomplishments of 2009 with a gala awards ceremony.

Big winners in the Early Career categories included Vincenzo Perrella and Dan Osborn who took out the Hog’s Breath Café – Best Film Award as well as the Curtin University – People’s Choice Award with their gleefully sardonic short film This is Perth. Their film broke new ground in popularising Western Australian shorts and has been viewed by more than 140,000 people on YouTube.

Rising talent Michael Hoath took out the coveted FTI – Young Filmmaker of the Year Award, which is presented to someone aged 25 years or under who has shown great promise in their film career. This year’s decision was hotly contested, with the Award receiving the highest number of nominations in its 10 year history.

Michael had a busy year in 2009, completing his first professional directing job on children’s television show Castaway, and graduating from the WA Screen Academy. His graduating film, The Bucks Party was nominated for Best Director and Best Actor at the Awards. He wrote and produced a short film that was selected as a finalist in The Doorpost Film Project which secured $15,000 funding for his next short, Crossroad. Michael is currently developing a feature film and working on television concepts.

FTI CEO Graeme Sward said that the awards should assist emerging filmmakers in establishing themselves in film and television.

“I hope that the Awards are an inspiration to filmmakers for what can be achieved in Western Australia. We are lucky to have such a supportive industry network with numerous opportunities to get great films made and seen though initiatives run by ScreenWest and the Film & Television Institute,” he said.

Acclaimed ABC telemovie 3 Acts of Murder by Taylor Media received the Lotterywest Award for Outstanding Achievement for a Production. Its producer Sue Taylor was also recognised with the Lotterywest Award for Outstanding Achievement for a Practitioner.

3 Acts of Murder featured a stellar cast and crew including director Rowan Woods and writer Ian David. The miniseries was nominated for four Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards in 2009 including Best Telefeature, Mini Series or Short Run Series, Best Actor in Television, Best Guest or Support Actor in a Television Drama and won the Best Guest or Supporting Actress in a Television Drama for Anni Finsterer.

Sue Taylor has produced or line produced close to $30million of film and television drama in Western Australia during her career. A number of her productions have achieved significant recognition in 2009.

They may not be household names just yet but that will not stop the State’s finest filmmaking talent from celebrating the innovation and achievements of film and television in 2009.

Presented by the Film & Television Institute WA, the WA Screen Awards has remained the premier celebration of film in Western Australia since its inception in 1981. This tradition is certain to continue with a gala ceremony to be held at the Perth Concert Hall, Saturday the 6th March.
Many former WA Screen Award nominees such as Elissa Down (Writer/Director, Black Balloon), James Bogle (Director, Closed for Winter), Britt Arthur (International award winning documentary maker) and Kenta McGrath (respected local music video maker), have gone on to forge bright careers in the local, national and international film industry.

Film & Television Institute CEO Graeme Sward said the Awards provide the most value to the industry though introducing emerging talent. “One of the main accomplishments of the Awards is to bring early career filmmakers into contact with industry representatives. Our judging panels are made up of industry practitioners who have significant experience working on professional productions, with many nominees receiving offers of work or professional guidance following the judging of the awards.”

The 2009 nominees include a raft of such emerging talent including Vincenzo Perella & Dan Osborne who shot to prominence with the hilarious viral video This is Perth. The controversial duo has been nominated for three awards including Best Editor, Best Director (presented by Stella Artois) and Best Film (presented by Hog’s Breath Café). However they will face stiff competition from Arrival’s and Departures which has also been nominated for three major awards and is fresh from its win at the Bohemian Shorts – Fremantle Film Competition.

The WA Screen Awards (WASA) celebrates innovation and the achievements of Western Australian filmmakers, from students through to established industry professionals. This year, the Industry Awards have been reviewed and there are now two Lotterywest Awards for Outstanding Achievement, each with a $7,000 cash prize courtesy of Lotterywest.

Industry Awards at The 23rd WA Screen Awards are:

Lotterywest Award for Outstanding Achievement – Production ($7,000 cash prize)

This Award is presented to a Western Australian screen production that has achieved an outstanding level of success in the 2009 calendar year. This can be box office figures, ratings success, critical acclaim, festival success, or national and international awards. The Award is presented to the Producer.

Lotterywest Award for Outstanding Achievement – Practitioner ($7,000 cash prize)

This Award recognises the significant achievements of an individual practitioner. This can be for any craft, and can be for work undertaken on a single production or multiple productions, however, the achievements must have occurred in the 2009 calendar year.

Lotterywest Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry

This is awarded to an individual who has displayed a long-term commitment to WA film and television. Nominations can either be made by the individual or on behalf of another screen industry member.

All three Industry Awards will be judged by a specially convened industry panel. The panel will be chaired by ScreenWest and include representatives from the Industry associations.

Submission deadline for the Industry Awards is 15 December 2009 (Fee $25)

The extended deadline is 5 January 2010 (Fee $50)
