When: Tue May 28, 2013 4:30pm to 6pm
EDT
Where: Communitech Hub, 151 Charles St West, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Event Description: http://waterlooagilelean.wordpress.com/2013/05/20/waterloo-agile-lean-may-28th-p2p-lean-change-using-lean-startup-for-organizational-change/

What?: Agile, whether it be Transformation or Adoption, is simply a trigger for organizational change, and according to various change management studies dating back to 1995, change efforts have a lousy success record. Change management brings many tools, methods and practices for managing change and Agile brings a set of values and principles for how to better manage work in today’s organizations.

Lean Change is a method that applies the customer development aspect of Lean Startup to organizational change. In this session, Jason Little and Andrew Annett will talk about what Lean Change is, how it evolved and tell some stories from the trenches.

When?: Tueday May 28th, 2013 from 4:30p.m. to 6:00p.m.

Where?: Communitech Hub, 151 Charles St West, Atlas and Matrix Rooms, Kitchener

Who?:
Andrew Annett: Andrew is an experienced coach and facilitator focused on helping organizations (large and small) organizing their work better. He has a consistent record of successfully implementing new technology and processes. Throughout his career he has managed significant process change to support critical business needs. His passion for resolving dilemmas in practical ways has lead him to the agile and lean communities.

Jason Little: Jason is an Organizational Change Coach at Leanintuit, licensed Management 3.0 trainer, international speaker and author. Jason is passionate about the people-side of change and has been officially helping organizations adopt Agile practices since 2007. In his spare time he runs Lean Startup workshops with the Ivey School of Business and University of Waterloo. Jason founded the Silicon Halton Agile Community and started the local Toronto Stoos Chapter.

Girl Geek Dinner Kitchener Waterloo

We have confirmed our May Dinner, which will take place on Tuesday, May 28th at 6pm at the Communitech Hub, with dinner provided.

Our speaker will be Valerie Blackmore, President of Wyndham Forensic Group in Guelph. She'll be talking about what really happens in a forensic laboratory, compared to what we see on tv. She'll also delve into some of the challenges executing their corporate vision as a private firm within what has historically been the domain of public laboratories.

Valerie co-founded Wyndham Forensic Group in 2009, and was responsible for startup, establishing the necessary relationships, and applying the requisite skills and competencies to establish and grow the organization. She holds a M.Sc. in Molecular Biology from McMaster University and an Hons. B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Guelph.

In addition to her business development and management responsibilities, Valerie continues hands-on work as a forensic biologist, performing body fluid and DNA analyses and reporting their results, as well as providing expert opinion and testimony when called upon. She began her career at Ontario's Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto in 1997, where she held a number of progressively responsible positions until moving to a private laboratory in 2006. She has been a qualified reporting scientist since 2000 and has been actively involved in the provision of client training throughout this time. Valerie is also a qualified laboratory auditor, with certification from the FBI to perform DNA audits.

We try to cover a wide range of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) topics at the Dinners, and I admit that this one gives me a geek thrill, as forensics is a personal interest of mine (and Valerie came highly recommended by a good friend, also a forensic scientist).

Our May Dinner will be the last one of this season until September, so we really hope you can join us!

Topic: Some Things You May Not Know About FMEAs

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is an engineering tool used for identifying and correcting potential failure modes in products, processes, and service systems. It has been used in many industries for almost 60 years. While the uses of FMEAs over this time have claimed many successes, catastrophic failures in the automotive, aerospace, public safety, and financial areas, to name a few, still persists. Join us as Ken Myers discusses four prevailing challenges to the FMEA method that could limit its effectiveness. In this open-forum discussion Ken will present some concerns about the FMEA approach and provide a few potential solutions.

Ken Myers is no stranger to risk management and FMEAs. Over his professional life he has supported or facilitated more than 200 complex FMEA efforts. Much of this work was claimed successful, but on rare occasion the failures still occurred or failure modes were somehow missed despite the attention to detail. These observation led Ken understand the limitations of FMEA and how best to improve the method and future results.

Presenter : Ken Myers, Ascendant Consulting Service Inc

Ken Myers is the founder and president of Ascendant Consulting Service, Inc., where he helps organizations develop and implement strategies for improving their product and service competitiveness. His 30 year experience base includes work in research and development, product and process design, manufacturing, quality systems and engineering, service systems, supplier development, and global corporate consulting. Ken has 20 years experience helping clients create sustainable results as a consultant, workshop designer and leader, group facilitator, trainer, project manager, coach and mentor in the areas of robust process design, process improvement, organizational change, risk management, process management, sustainable business practice, root-cause analysis and complex problem solving.

Prior to starting Ascendant Consulting, Ken worked for Baxter Healthcare Corporation where he co-managed the corporate Six Sigma Engineer program. While at Baxter, Ken worked as a Six Sigma Master Black Belt where he trained and mentored 1,100 managers and engineers at 26 plants located in 12 countries. In that position he certified an aggregate of 200 Six Sigma Black Belts, Green Belts, and Six Sigma Engineers. His combined career problem solving and improvement benefits to serviced corporations presently exceed 400 million US dollars.

Ken holds a BSc Physics degree from San Diego State University and is a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He has been an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer since 1993 and a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt since 2006.
