Immortal (ad vitam) - Immortal (Also called Immortel) is a 2004 Science Fiction movie adaptation of the Graphic Novella by comic art cult genius Enki Bilal. Also directed by Enki Bilal. Scenario adaptation and dialogue; Enki Bilal.
The movie is a mix of real actors partially brushed over with fore and backgrounds using cgi technologies. A masterpiece of ciné noir mixed with science fiction and ancient mythology.
Starring - Linda Hardy as Jill Bioskop, Thomas Kretschmann as Alcide Nikopol, Charlotte Rampling as Elma Turner, Frédéric Pierrot as "John" Yann Collette as Froebe and Thomas M. Pollard, as the inimitable "Horus"

The movie is based on the arrival of an extraterrestrial being named "Horus" who was once one of the Gods of Egypt. This being chooses the character Nikopol (who has accidentally "suffered" a premature release from cryogenic incarceration) as his host on earth by entering the body of Nikopol. He uses Nikopol to find a suitable person to spawn an offspring with, namely "Jill Bioskop" (Linda Hardy).

The director of The Cooler tries a bigger canvas: Crossing Over is Wayne Kramer's take on nothing less than the vast subject of illegal immigration, coming at the topic from a dozen or so directions. Hefting the most star power is Harrison Ford, scurrying about as an L.A. Immigration and Customs officer whose conscience is sore from having trundled so many illegals back over the border--now he's worried about the child of a particularly vulnerable woman (Alice Braga). Cliff Curtis plays Ford's partner, an Iranian-American whose family is not as assimilated as his casual manner might suggest. There's a bit of pulp swagger in other sections of the picture, as Kramer tries to channel his inner Sam Fuller: for instance, an Immigration official (Ray Liotta at his piggiest) coerces an Australian actress (Alice Eve) into a sex-for-green-card affair, and an adolescent Arab-American girl (Summer Bishil, from Towelhead) gives a cheeky speech at school that puts her family under suspicion as possible terrorists.

Other strands of this scenario aren't as urgent, as Ashley Judd dreams of adopting the African child she's tending, and Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe), as a British non-believer, tries to convince Immigration authorities of his commitment to working at a Jewish school. The movie's single best scene has him "auditioning" to convince a rabbi of his commitment to Judaism, a funny moment that also carries an echo of the history of Jewish exodus. The movie has a tendency to bash from one thing to the next, too neatly connecting its Crash-like plotlines, like a really spirited first draft of a better movie. --Robert Horton

Apart from this, i find he always chooses content material that has underlying humane values which are suggested to us in Jim Carrey's both humorous and subtle way. From Social satire (Truman Show) to dealing with the underlying causes behind personal tragedies that sometimes happen needlessly because of human ignorance and supposed values (Cable Guy). This is a not so often considered element of Jim Carrey's wonderful way of performing. James Eugene "Jim" Carrey (born January 17, 1962) is a BAFTA-nominated and two-time Golden Globe Award-winning Canadian-American actor and stand-up comedian. He is probably best known for his manic and slapstick performances in comedy films such as Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, and Yes Man. Carrey has also achieved critical success in dramatic roles in films such as The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Comedy

In 1979, under the management of Leatrice Spevack, Carrey started doing stand-up comedy at Yuk Yuk's in Toronto, where he rose to become a headliner in February 1981, shortly after his 19th birthday. One reviewer in the Toronto Star raved that Carrey was "a genuine star coming to life." In the early 1980s, Carrey moved to Los Angeles and started working at The Comedy Store, where he was noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield liked Carrey's performance so much that he signed Carrey to open Dangerfield's tour performances.

Carrey then turned his attention to the film and television industries, auditioning to be a cast member for 1980–1981 season of NBC's Saturday Night Live. Carrey was not selected for the position (although he did host the show in May 1996). Joel Schumacher had him audition for a role in D.C. Cab, though in the end, nothing ever came of it. His first lead role on television was Skip Tarkenton, a young animation producer on NBC's short-lived The Duck Factory, airing from April 12, 1984, to July 11, 1984, and offering a behind-the-scenes look at the crew that produced a children's cartoon.

Carrey continued working in smaller film and television roles, which led to a friendship with fellow comedian Damon Wayans, who co-starred with Carrey as a fellow extraterrestrial in 1989's Earth Girls Are Easy. When Wayans' brother Keenen began developing a sketch comedy show for Fox called In Living Color, Carrey was hired as a cast member, whose unusual characters included masochistic safety inspector Fire Marshall Bill (whose dangerous "safety tips" were the target of censors and watchdog groups who saw the character as a dangerous example for naive younger viewers,[citation needed]) and masculine female bodybuilder Vera de Milo. His on-screen antics caught the eye of Hollywood.

Film

Carrey made his film debut in Rubberface (1983), which was released as Introducing...Janet. Later that year, he won the leading role in Damian Lee's Canadian skiing comedy Copper Mountain, which included his impersonation of Sammy Davis Jr. Since the film had a less than one hour runtime consisting largely of musical performances by Rita Coolidge and Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins, it was not considered a genuine feature film. A few years later, Carrey saw his first major starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten, in the role of Mark Kendall, a teen virgin pursued by a 400-year old female vampire (played by Lauren Hutton). After supporting roles in films such as Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), and The Dead Pool (1988), Carrey did not experience true stardom until starring in the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by critics, and earned Carrey a 1995 Golden Raspberry Award nomination as Worst New Star.

However, the film was a huge commercial success, as were his two other starring roles from that year: The Mask and Dumb and Dumber. In 1995, Carrey appeared as the Riddler in Batman Forever and reprised his role as Ace Ventura in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Both films were successful at the box office and earned Carrey multi-million-dollar paychecks.

Carrey earned $20 million for his next film, The Cable Guy (directed by Ben Stiller), a record sum for a comedy actor. The attention drawn to the paycheck, coupled with some negative reviews, and the film's dark sensibility, all contributed to the film's mediocre earnings. Carrey quickly rebounded with the successful (and lighter) Liar Liar, a return to his trademark comedy style.

Carrey took a chance (and a slight pay cut) to play a more serious role to star in The Truman Show (1998), a change of pace that led to forecasts of Academy Award nominations. Although the movie was nominated for three other awards, Carrey did not personally receive a nomination, leading him to joke that "it's an honor just to be nominated...oh no," during his appearance on the Oscar telecast.

However, Carrey did win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and an MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance. That same year, Carrey appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on the final episode of Garry Shandling's The Larry Sanders Show, making an impression by ripping deliberately into Shandling's character.

In 1999, Carrey won the role of comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon. Other actors, including Edward Norton, were interested in the role, but Carrey's audition, including an act with the bongo drums Kaufman used in his performances, helped him to be cast as Kaufman. Despite critical acclaim, he was not nominated for an Academy Award, but again won a Best Actor Golden Globe award for the second consecutive year.

In 2000, Carrey reteamed with the Farrelly Brothers, who had directed him in Dumb and Dumber, in their comedy, Me, Myself & Irene, about a state trooper with multiple personalities who romances a woman played by Renée Zellweger. The film grossed $24 million on its opening weekend and $90 million by the end of its domestic run.

In 2003, Carrey reteamed with Tom Shadyac for the financially successful comedy Bruce Almighty. Earning over $242 million in the U.S. and over $484 million worldwide, this film became the second highest grossing live-action comedy of all time.

His performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004 earned high praise from critics, who again predicted that Carrey would receive an Oscar nomination; the film did win for Best Original Screenplay, and costar Kate Winslet received an Oscar nomination for her performance. (Carrey was also nominated for a sixth Golden Globe for his performance).

In 2004, he played the villainous character Count Olaf in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, which was based on the popular children's novels of the same name. In 2005, Carrey starred in a remake of Fun with Dick and Jane, playing Dick, a husband who loses his job after his company goes bankrupt.

In 2007, Carrey reunited with Joel Schumacher, director of Batman Forever, for The Number 23, a psychological thriller co-starring Virginia Madsen and Danny Huston. In the film, Carrey plays a man who becomes obsessed with the number 23, after finding a book about a man with the same obsession.

Carrey has stated that he finds the prospect of reprising a character to be considerably less enticing than taking on a new role. The only time he has reprised a role was with Ace Ventura. (Sequels to Bruce Almighty, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask have all been released without Carrey's involvement.)

Despite having a 20-year career with no Academy Award nominations, Jack Nicholson (who in the first 20 years of his career had five) has named Carrey the "Jack Nicholson" of the next generation.

As far as i am concerned, Jim Carrey is a genius in both the coedy sense and in Method acting. Although he is a master of slapstick and silliness, he is also capable of conveying some very serious aspects of the human psyche, and the social implications involved with such matters. It is perhaps not evident to everyone that Mr. Carrey likes to inflect such aspects into his performances, but i guarantee you it is intentional (as is with the roles chosen by another of my favourite actors; Tom Hanks)

Welcome to Siamfoundation Movies online section - the latest movie on the portal is of course Iron Man - we hope that you enjoy the movie portal. This section of the siamfoundation project was developed because of the author's boredom whilst travelling around the world and often staying in hotels with a wireless connection, but could not find any decent movie streaming sites whose movies actually worked. He then decided to create a blog with real working streaming movies in order to do away with the frustration we all have to experience searching form movies onn the multitude of sites which profess to have mega movies on their site, which only result in dismaying us when the movie stops halfway through, or on clicking "watch movie" or "download movie", simply lead to a paid membership signup form!

Author's note on Christopher McCandless

In April 1992, a young man from a seemingly upperclass family decided to hitch hike to Alaska - walking alone throught the outback to the North of Mount Mckinley. His rotted corpse was discovered 4 months later by a party of Moose hunters. After his body had been discovered, the author of the book, Jon Krakauer, was requested to report on the baffling circumstances leading to the death of McCandless. The boy turned out to have been the son of a well off family with excellent colege grades and athletic aspirations.After his graduation, McCandless changed his name and disappeared - his 24 thousand dollar savings account was given to charity, his car abandoned, along with almost all his posessions. All the money in his wallet had been burned, and a new life was invented for himself. He lived on the edge of society, hourneying across North America seeking transcendence. His relatives were clueless as to his whereabouts until the discovery of his lifeless corpse in Alaska. He might not have died if it wasn't for a series of senseless accidents and blunders in the forest of alaska in 1992.

Quantum of Solace and other Bond Movies.

The name of James Bond is a common name in every household of the world just about, the ecploits of Codename 007 have reached out as far as the wastelands of Tibet and the deserts of the Sudan - all because of the ease with which we can cheaply and efficiently transport and store data on a simple piece of round plastic called a "Compact Disk". 007 is back again now in Quantum of Solace - a new episode in the neverending adventures of our English gentleman Spy James Bond. The current James Bond is not so much a Gentleman as the previous, and the element of his character that likes danger, along with his brutal nature, is allowe to become more evident in this, and indeed the last Bond move. This, i find, is very good, seeing that the most people who watch James Bond movies are not children at all, and don't need to be treated like imbeciles.

It is obvious that a person as efficient in his job as 007 is not a person who enjoys peace and quiet and non-violence. There have been a vast array fo different actors playing Bond over the decades, the most famous most probably being the second of the bunch Sean Connery, who starred in Goldfinger (my favourite, because my Dad had the same car, the Aston Martin DB5). Although Sean didnt continue to make a series of films, Goldfinger was enough to impress on everybody's minds that "This is how James Bond should look and act". Roger Moore was too much of a sissy i found and didn't like him at all. George Lazenby, the forst actor to play Bond, was also a stiffnecked muppet as far as i am concerned. But the latest Bond, Daniel Craig, is a perfect continuation for Bond and the best since the days of Sean Connery; at last we have again a more rugged and less conventional Bond. Although neither over slim nor tall, this Bond is pneumatically driven with a strenght of will and character and an athletic manner. A less respecting attitude for his government is also present, and his ability to kill in cold blood is not distracted from with scenes of tenderness, as was in the most Bond movies. This is his second time in the role of 007 james Bond, the first being "Casino Royale". Quantum of Solace is the continuation.

Synopsis

Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Thunderball was a great Movie and still remains in my list of top Bond Movies.

Classic Science Fiction has been one of the main driving forces to my existence, and shaped my whole childhood, which was often spent months and months on end locked in my room reading sci fi by the great authors of the 40s and 50s adn 60s Eras. Brian Aldiss, Robert A. Heinlein (starship troopers), Robert Bloch, Isaac Asimov (I Robot), Arthur C. Clarke (2001, 2010 a Space Odyssey), Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Scanner Darkly), Poul Anderson (1926 - 2001), Frank Herbert and the like.
Poul Anderson is not precisely a well known household name, but nonetheless is considered in Sci Fi literary circles as a Genius of the Genre. he hasn't had many movies made of his works unfortunately, but maybe now after the latest remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still", we might be able to enjoy and experience a revival in the re-interpretation of old sci fi classics.

Poul Anderson has not been able to contribute to much moviemaking with his books, but the High Crusade was one that made it into the production line. Shame that his all time classic, "Brainwave" dodn't ever get an interpretation, as i feel it wopuld be a massive contribution to science fiction cinema genre if given the right person to interpret the role.
Synopsis of The High Crusade
The High Crusade, published over forty years ago and rarely out of print since, is science fiction grand master Poul Anderson’s story about how some aliens try to invade the Earth—and then kind of wish they hadn’t. The aliens land in Merry Olde England in
the year 1345, in the barony of Sir Roger de Tourneyville, a some what down on his heels, but starwart nobleman who is in the process of gathering an army to help King Edward III conquer the French.

The aliens, serving the Wesgorix Empire, are well skilled at conquering primitive planets. They land at some inhabited place, overawe the natives with their superior weapons and technology, and take over. Unfortunately for them, they have never invaded the English before. The aliens, in the midst of overawing the primitives, get perforated by a volley of cloth yard shafts courtesy of the local longbow men, led by a merry giant right out of Robin Hood named Red John Hamewood. Sir Roger, seeing that these demon-like alien can actually be killed, draws sword, cried, “Saint George for England!”, and leads his knights and men-at-arms to take the alien space craft.

That is only the beginning. What follows is a kind of 'Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court' in reverse. The saintly Brother Parvus—another character right out of Robin Hood—teachers a surviving alien Latin. The alien has some strange ideas about cosmology. Sir Roger can accept the idea that the Earth is a sphere that revolves around the sun as the Greeks had similar notions. But the stars being other suns? Obviously the alien is having them on. Almost certainly he comes from a land from beyond Cathay.

I suppose of all the Sci Fi authors who managed to get their works to grace the silver screen, the most successful of all was Philip K. Dick.

Another successful writer on the Hollywood payroll was Isaac Asimov, creator of the I Robot series, and the whole concept of the three laws of Robotics was made General Knowledge in every household simply because of the widespread fame of his books on the Robots of Mankind's distant Future/s
Isaac Asimov was the most famous, most honored, most widely read, and most beloved science fiction author of all time. In his five decades as an author, he wrote more than four hundred books, won every award his readers and colleagues could contrive to give him, and provided pleasure and insight to millions. The name of Isaac Asimov is almost a household name in most Countries of the Western World, and even people who don't like science fiction have heard of his name. The screenplay to the Movie by Isaac Asimov and Harlan Ellison is available from amazon (see above left banner), if you wish to obtain it as a collector's item. I really recommend a thorough reading of the Robot series of books and stories by Isaac Asimov, as they will lead you to understand and enjoy the movie I Robot with Will Smith, a whole lot better

Isaac Asimov was born in Russia in 1920 and grew up in the USA. His fantastic career as a science fiction writer began in 1939 with the appearence of a short story 'Marooned Off Vesta', in Amazing Stories. He won the Hugo Award four times and the Nebula Award once. With nearly five hundred books to his name and several hundred articles, Asimov's output was prolific by any standards. He died in 1992 at the age of 72.

I think if i was able to choose which Science Fiction book and Author should receive a great investment and producer/director/cast for the next top sci-fi movie production, then i would choose "Hothouse" by Brian W. Aldiss. Hothouse is an amazing story set perhaps up to 10 million years into the Future. The world is no longer as we know it to be, half of the planet in Eternal Darkness, and half in Eternal Daylight. This is due to the fact that the Earth suffered a pole shift and stopped turning. Most of the planet is composed of Vegetable Lifeforms, even the most intelligent races were plant-life in basic nature. Spider-like creatures climb their spun crystalline webs up to the moon from the "tips" of the forest. Humans are shrunk into pygmy sized beings, living inside giant nutshells in the treetops to avoid the dangers of the forest floor, their traditions preventing them from straying to the tips to see what was there also. The adventure lived by the 2 young humans in this story beginning with the focus on a tribe of humans living in a nutshell colony in the forest. Two if the oyunger members get lost and embark on a journey; The marvels and mysteries begin to unfold as of this moment - please someone! make a movie of this story!

The story revolves around a young fellow called Gren, who at some point in the story becomes "infiected" by the "morel" (a mole/wart-like protuberance" which has the effect of increasing Gren's Intelligence and curiosity factors.` This causes Gren to wander on a series of adventures which amount to a tale of self-discovery and the subsequent rediscovery/invention of the Human Race.

Although Hothouse is perhaps not his most famous novel, I feel that it is the definitive one of all his works, and has not received the recognition it deserves as far as imaginative element and the story that is so far ahead of it's Time is concerned. Everybody should read Hothouse once in their life. Everybody should also go to India once in their Life too.. in fact i could list a whole lot of things that everybody should try once in their life.. but reading Hothouse is way up at the top of the list, so go on and obtain a copy from Amazon and help me make this blog profitable instead of just a hobby. I am unemployed anyway so i need all the help I can get.

Star Trek as a late night treat;
I remember as a small child of perhaps, 5 years old, being allowed to come downstairs at 7:30 P.M. to be able to watch Star trek - i loved watching Captain Kirk with his weakness for women and playing the Gentleman.

The stretchy bronze sweatshirts with the slick V shaped motif was the Beez Knees as far as i was concerned. I especially liked the garden scenes on other planets, sometimes with beautiful plastic kistch of a paradisical legend of Botany. I always wondered how Kirk resisted staying on some of those planets - i was always jumping up and down and saying "stay there". There was something about all thos big primitive buttons, sliding cardboard doors and peeping noises when they flipped open their communicators to say "beam me up Scottie" that made it so special.
The scene at the beginning and end of each episode with the Starship Enterprise flashing past was always a picture that left a deep impression on my mind right up to this day. You see that scene and all the Star Trek episodes you ever saw fly past your mind's eye.

Robert A. Heinlein - Stranger in a Strange land
Another great Sci Fi Novel which i feel should be lent to interpretation by the Film Industry is that of "Stranger in a Strange Land" (as is also "Time Enough for Love", but i think that has been filmed already??), by Robert A. Heinlein. Written in his usual, perhaps found to be sexist perspective of Modern Post War society and the Human female's role in the Human Race, this book is still an excellent example of how the questioning attitudes of the 60s succeeded in tearing down the walls of some very deeply rooted and well established suppositions and norms about Human Behavioural traits and Social Norms and habits. Stranger in a Strange Land was an icon of the Hippies of the Summer of Love, and became sometimes referred to as the "Hippy Bible". I think this was perhaps the first really big thick book i picked up and hardly ever put down again till i was finished. The great sadness and disappointment when reaching completion of reading it was abated by the fact that i realized that the only way to overcome the pain of the story of my life to have ended, was to begin reading it once again immediately. And thus continue living in the world of Valentine Micheal Smith and his rather liberal views of the world and how one should behave correctly.

Synopsis
Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) is the epic saga of an earthling. Valentine Michael Smith, born and educated on Mars, who arrives on our planet with psi powers - telepathy, clairvoyance, and the ability to take control of the minds of others - and complete innocence regarding the morals of man.

After a tutelage under a surrogate-father figure, Valentine begins his transformation into a kind of messiah. His exceptional abilities lead Valentine to become many things to many people: freak, scam artist, media commodity, searcher, free-love pioneer, neon evangelist, and martyr.

Heinlein won his second Hugo Award for this novel, sometimes called his divine comedy and often called his masterpiece.

The Howard Families (the titular Methuselah's Children) derive from Ira Howard, who became rich in the California Gold Rush, but who himself died young and left no children. Fearing death himself, he left his money for the prolongation of human life, and the trustees under his will carried out his intention by financially encouraging those with long-lived grandparents to marry and have children. While the Families (who, by the 22nd Century, have a life expectancy of 150 years) have kept their existence secret, with the enlightened human society established under The Covenant, they begin a limited exposure of themselves.

Society refuses to believe that the Howard Families simply 'chose their ancestors wisely', instead insisting that they have developed a method to extend life. When the Howard Families fail to produce any such techniques, the Families are persecuted and interned. Though the beleaguered Administrator (Prime Minister) of the planet, Slayton Ford, knows that the Families are telling the truth, he is helpless to control an increasingly irrational public – and as a democratically elected official he must act on the behalf of the majority no matter the consequences. He can visualize only two horrific solutions – and is wracked with self-hatred as he tries to imagine which would be more humane: mass execution or mass sterilization. In short, his duty as a democratic leader is to commit genocide. He decides this, although he knows that this will finish him in politics and likely mean his exile.

Lazarus Long realizes this as well, and proposes an alternative – that the Administrator assist them in hijacking the colony starship New Frontiers. To survive, the Howard Families must embark on an exodus to the stars. Ford, thrown out of office when his executive council feels he is not doing enough to wrest the "secret" from the Families, himself joins the trek at the last moment to escape the wrath of his former constituency. A member of the Families, Andrew Jackson Libby, (known as "Slipstick" Libby because he is a Mental calculator) is a genius who invents a light-hugging stardrive. This permits them to travel between stars in years instead of centuries.

The first planet they discover has humanoid inhabitants who seem friendly and advanced - however, they are merely domestic animals belonging to the planet's true masters, indescribable beings of equally indescribable power. When humans prove incapable of similar domestication, they are expelled from the planet and sent to another world.

The second planet seems far more welcoming - it is a lush environment with no predators and mild weather. Its inhabitants are just as welcoming, though just as strange as the other two races the Families have met - they are a group mind. Their abilities are in a way even more impressive than the inhabitants of the first planet the Families visited: the reason the planet is so welcoming is because they have made it so with a form of genetic engineering. However, their civilization is perhaps even more unsuitable for the Families than the master/pet civilization. This becomes evident when Mary Sperling, second oldest of the Families behind Long, who has always been fearful of death, joins the group mind in an attempt to become truly immortal.When the first baby conceived on the planet is born, the Families are horrified. The group mind has altered it as they have the planet, and though objectively the alterations are an improvement (every organ is more efficient, potent and better arranged, along with secondary miniature hands supported by miniature eyes) many cannot consider it human.

Lazarus calls a mass meeting of the humans on the planet. He states that humans are what they are because they are individuals, and that he feels he has no place on this world. He asks if any agree with him. Thus, though about a fourth of their number remain on the planet, Lazarus, and a majority of the Families, decides it's time to go back to Earth and claim their rights. Libby, with the help of the group mind, has designed a true faster than light drive - they can be home in just months.

The Families return to the Solar System to discover that their travels have taken seventy-five Earth-years. To their surprise they find that on earth great longevity is commonplace. Spurred on by the (false) belief that there was some specific "technique" to the Howards' longevity, Earth's inhabitants have explored every avenue known to science to duplicate the feat; and have succeeded through the production of artificial blood, to be transfused into recipients and keep them "younger." Thus, the Families are no longer threatened - in fact they now possess something even more important than immortality: faster than light travel! The Solar System is incredibly crowded (one now must acquire a licence to have a child!), and immigration to other worlds can prevent catastrophe. Libby and Long decide to recruit other members of the Families, and explore space with the new drive.
One film they DID make out of a heinlein Book which i don't like at all though, is "Starship Troopers". This is the Gung Ho type of stuff that gave Heinlein His Macho reputation as a sexist and Patriot. He also wrote some astonishingly Liberal thoughts to the current attitudes and ethics of the time, which seem now to have been years if not decades ahead of the time they were written in.

Comics, Sci Fi, Hippy and Fantasy

My main other hobby apart from Movies was reading and collecting Underground Comics and graphic novels, by artistic and storywriting masters such as Jean Giraud (Moebius), Enki - Bilal, Jodorowski, Druillet, Frazetta, and many other great artists and story writers, such as Alan Moore, creator of Swamp Thing, Watchmen and Constantine (John Constantine - spin off character from Swamp Thing).
To tide me over between issues of the monthly publications i used to buy the weekly UK sci fi comic "200 AD" This is the place where "Judge Dredd" first came to the reader's eye, and i was an avid judge dredd fan for years before anyone ever heard of him in the movie with Sylvester Stallone

Another great Artist in Science Fiction's "graphic Novella" genre of the comic book world, is Jean "Moebius" Giraud. Jean Giraud, or, "Moebius" for short as he is affectionately known in comnic book circles, has had a hand in many a sci fi movie, although you may not be aware of it;

The vehicles, clothing and architecture as well as many of the camera perspectives in the Blockbuster Sci Fi classic adapted from Philip K. Dick's "do androids dream of electric sheep?" movie "Blade Runner". Moebius had a chief role in the set design on this movie, as he has in several other significant sci fi epics.

The way the floating cars descend down through the levels of the city are so reminiscent of one of Jean Giraud's grand perspectives so often displayed within a tiny quadratic fgrame on a page in a book.

Jean Giraud has developed an inimitable and classic style, irrepeatable in its textures, shapes, and ambience, so individual is it, that it reflects it's character in every movie he ever has had a hand in, leaving one saying " that isn't half like somethiing from a Moebius ccomic!".

The Moebius look is also evident in the movie "The Fifth Element" with it's rounded bubble-like imagery, evident in both the clothing and the surrounding scenery and apparatus.

The choice of design for the hovering car in Blade Runner is classic Moebius in shape and style, both on the exterior and interior. Ths gloomy crowded alleys where Deckard partakes of his noodles is also typical Moebius atmospherics applied to the movie.

Other similar influances are evident in movies such as "Immortal" - adapted from the Enki Bilal comic books. You can see Bilal and Enki's typical art and storytelling influence throughout the movie, and the art in the comig books is addictive in the ambience it instigates in you when you are looking at it.

Crank (Coma) - Jason Statham

Watch Crank - with Jason Statham - breathless excitement watching this masterpiece of hyperactive panic. There is nothing more riveting than watching Jason Statham pumping Epinephreninto his veins and gurning through the city in a manic speedfreak effort to keep on time with a clock that is ticking away in his heart in the form of an entropic substance injected into him by a band of villians at the beginning. He has no other choice than to race along with the breakneck speed of occurring events and overcome all hurdles in his way with the utmost speed and efficiency. Th calm decision and calculation he maintains whilst suffering the pure base panic that is evident in the atmospherics of the whole movie from beginning to end, is, to say the least, amazing.
You can of course, expect the usual top action and fight sequences, as well as the odd over the top stunt in typical "transporter" style. You won't get many chances to rush to the bathroom or refrigerator for another beer, so stack them up on the table in front of you, and keep an empty bottle ready for if you need to pee.

The Green Mile - A story to touch your heart

The Green Mile is one of the most touching Movies ever; Tom Hanks plays at least one, (if not two) brilliant roles as a prison warder, and as the decrepit ex-warder in the scenes as an old man at the beginning and end of the Movie. The mixture of Human Ethics, Mysterious powers, the battle between good and evil, and the personal stories of various people who had to live with each other on the death row which is the main scene for the movie, and what is known in the Movie as "The Green Mile".
Evil is represented by the character of Billie the Kid, a disgusting example of a Human being who is the real guilty person for the murder of the two young twin girls for which our hero of the film "John Coffee" is accused and sentenced to death for. By coincidence, they both end up spending their last days on the green Mile, with Tom Hanks watching over them as their warden. Miraculous events then begin to occur, as John Coffee slowly reveals the big pure hearted desire to help others, and his magical ability to heal begins to infect the feelings of his companions on the green Mile... Watch on and be moved to tears, as Tom Hanks takes you into the world of the green Mile, and the wonderful Miracles, and Tragic facts will carry you to places inside your heart which you never even knew existed.

Although some people found the green Mile a little long with it's total running time of 3 hours, but for me, i find most films come too suddenly to an end, therefore an extra 30 minutes or so in order to develop a sensible ending is completely fine as far as i am concerned. Who set this stupid standard that a movie should only last 2 hours?? it's only set for commercial reasons, and if you look at the greatest epics (star wars, lord of the rings), you will see that a long story has a lot of magic to it and ends up as a classic if well directed and produced. The Green Mile is one of those Classics, which only an actor of the calibre f Tom Hanks can make stand up on it's own with ony himself as the main character sewing the rest of the movie together. Lord of the Rings and Star Wars both made use of several sub plots, whereas Tom Hanks handles the whole 3 hours of the movie almost constantly present in all the scenes. He does the same in Forrest Gump now that we mention it, which is also a long dragged out mega movie with only himself holding the many sub-stories and scenarios together.
Tom Hanks is a Cinematic Genius and can be considered a Method Actor for his well deduced and executed roles, which are always shrewdly examined and chosen before accepting the job on a new project. I was clasping my stomach with exasperation though as he enacted the scene where he was trying to urinate with a gall stone problem, and the expression on his face (synonymous with sucking an unripe lemon with an ulcerous tongue) - Although Mr. Hanks does not attempt any comedy in this movie, he still manages to bring you into fits of laughter with the simple seriosity of the fact that he is going through an incredible amount of pain, which many of us have either experienced, or can at least, imagine.

The day the Earth stood still is of course a remake of the Original Movie released in 1951, and what a classic movie it was.
Starring the genius of Monty Python fame John Cleese, this is one of the few remakes that can make the mark as far as most remakes go. Most fail to recreate the illusions of the first movie, but this one is an exception.
Strange how all the doomsday movies are back in fashion now we are approaching 2012 and Galactic alignment. I wonder if somebody in Hollywood has had a look ahead to the future?

Impressive special effects are the key selling point for this big-budget remake of Robert Wise's classic 1951 science fiction parable about an alien visitor who delivers a chilling ultimatum to the leaders of the world. Keanu Reeves, who seemed ideal at first blush but ultimately turns into another case of miscasting, steps in for Michael Rennie as intergalactic watchdog Klaatu, who with his robot Gort (now super-sized), promises global destruction unless the powers that be unless drastic measures are undertaken regarding the Earth's environmental issues (or so one assumes). Jennifer Connelly is largely wasted in the Patricia Neal role of scientist/single mom assigned to study Klaatu, who offers a somewhat chilly father figure to her son (a grating Jaden Smith). Connelly isn't the only fine actor in the cast left standing idle while director Scott Derrickson's effects team constructs eye-popping scenes of wholesale mayhem; Mad Men's Jon Hamm, Kathy Bates, John Cleese and Rob Knepper are all adrift in the aimless script by David Scarpa, which never even fully explains why Klaatu is so bent on blowing us to smithereens. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 black-and-white science fiction film that tells the story of a humanoid alien visitor who comes to Earth with a warning. The film stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe, and Hugh Marlowe, under the direction of Robert Wise. Screenwriter Edmund H. North based the screenplay on the 1940 Harry Bates' short story "Farewell to the Master". The score was composed by Bernard Herrmann and used two theremin electronic instruments. The film is often considered by movie historians to be one of the classics of the science-fiction genre.

Storyline;

At the beginning of the film, a flying saucer lands on the Ellipse in President's Park, Washington, D.C. Its pilot Klaatu (Michael Rennie) emerges and declares he has come on a mission of goodwill. When he opens a small, menacing-looking device, he is shot and wounded by a nervous soldier. In response, a large humanoid robot called Gort (Lock Martin) steps out of the ship and disintegrates all weapons present without harming the soldiers. Klaatu orders him to stop and remarks that the device he carried was in fact a gift to the President that could have been used to study life on other planets. Klaatu is taken to an army hospital, where he recovers. The military attempts to enter Klaatu's ship, but finds it impregnable, while Gort stands motionless outside.

Klaatu meets the President's secretary, Mr. Harley (Frank Conroy), and reveals he has a message he wants the whole world to hear, to which Harley replies that the divided world leaders would not even be able to agree on a meeting place. Klaatu admits he is responsible, tells Helen his true identity, and asks for her help. A montage sequence shows that Klaatu has neutralized electric power everywhere for half an hour (with the exception of critical systems such as hospitals and planes in flight), bringing the world to a standstill and thereby providing the demonstration Barnardt had suggested.

Transporter 3 - Jason Statham

Transporter 3 - this is of course the Third in the Transporter series with Jason Statham. I love Jason Statham's mega-powerful power hits - each blow a bone-breaking experience. The over the top impossible stunt scenes have become a trademark of the movies. This is one of the only movies able to pull such impossible stunts without you feeling the need to say "oh look at that! That's impossible". In this movie it simply doesn't matter whether it is humanly possible or not - it is a necessary ingredient of the experience of watching the Transporter in Action.

Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is a disillusioned L.A. Police Officer, rarely playing by the rules and haunted by the death of his wife. All of the cops in Ludlow's unit, including their captain, Jack Wander (Forest Whitaker), bend and break the rules of conduct on a regular basis. Their intention is often to deal with crime in a manner that they perceive to be more efficient, which leads them to routinely lie, falsify reports and manipulate evidence to cover up for their wrong-doings.

The movie opens with Tom Ludlow waking up, having been drinking the night before. Working undercover, he meets with two Korean gangsters in a parking lot, who are looking to buy a machine gun from him. After a vicious beatdown, the Koreans then proceed to steal Tom's car. Locating his car at the Korean's hideout, Tom storms in and kills all the people inside, and then locates the missing children.

Using a pair of rubber gloves, he then proceeds to cover up what really happened. While the other officers in his unit congratulate him, he is confronted by his former partner, Terrence Washington (Terry Crews). Washington no longer approves of the corruption and deception and has gone straight, reporting the problems to Internal Affairs Captain James Biggs (Hugh Laurie), who starts an investigation against Ludlow. Upset at Washington for "snitching", Ludlow follows him to a convenience store to confront him. However, Washington is executed in the store in an orchestrated hit, with Ludlow present. Though Ludlow is innocent, the circumstances heavily implicate him in the murder. DNA of two criminals known as Fremont and Coates is found at the scene, as well as drugs in Washington's car. It is assumed that Washington himself was corrupt, despite his seemingly changed attitude, and that he was stealing drugs from the department's evidence room and selling them to Fremont and Coates, who killed him over a bad deal. Ludlow convinces Detective Paul "Disco" Diskant (Chris Evans) who has been assigned to the case to pursue the case. Their search for the two involves some tough interrogation of other known criminals, which eventually leads them to a house in the hills where they discover the bodies of the real Fremont and Coates buried in a shallow grave. The decomposition of the bodies is so severe that it becomes apparent that they were killed well before Washington's murder.

Ludlow and Disco, posing as corrupt cops who are willing to take over Washington's activity of stealing and selling drugs, are able to set up a meeting with the two criminals masquerading as Fremont and Coates. The meeting goes bad when they recognize Ludlow from the convenience store and then realize he and Disco are off-duty and seeking revenge. One of the impostors, Coates (Common), shoots and kills Disco. Ludlow kills both Fremont and Coates and escapes back to his girlfriend's house, where a news report reveals the criminals were undercover Sheriff's Deputies.

Shortly afterward, Ludlow is captured at his girlfriend's house by Santos (Amaury Nolasco) and Demille (John Corbett), two fellow officers from his own unit who admit that they planted Fremont and Coates' DNA and the drugs in Washington's car at the scene of his murder, to prevent him from testifying against them in Biggs's investigation. The two cops take Ludlow out to the house where the two bodies were found earlier, for execution. However, Ludlow manages to escape and kills both of them. He then heads to Washington's house to take care of Clady (Jay Mohr), whom he later captures and places in the trunk of his car. Ludlow is also piecing together the puzzle as he goes; he eventually learns that he has been a pawn in a plan masterminded by Captain Wander. Ludlow shows up at Wander's house in order to kill him, when Wander reveals that he has incriminating evidence on just about everybody in the department, as well as judges and politicians. With so many people in Wander's pocket, he has been able to quickly move up the department ranks as well as bury his unit's corruptions. Wander tries to convince Ludlow that he is his friend and best officer, and bribes him with a large amount of stolen money and incriminating documents hidden in a wall of his home. However, Ludlow kills Wander anyway.

Internal Affairs Officer Biggs, who was "investigating" Ludlow, arrives to the scene and reveals that he used Ludlow to bring down Wander and get access to his files by opening Ludlow's eyes to the real corruption going on within his unit. As he leaves, Biggs tells Ludlow that the department needs men like him; police officers who are willing to bend the rules, but are ultimately honest at heart.

This must have been hard to pull off with a robotic expression constantly, whilst still managing to reveal the innate potential emotions that seem to arise in the people controlling "Dave" (a man sized robot controled by miniature humanoids from another planet.

Nim's Island brought me right back to my early childhood days, and the innocence of a world where almost anything could happen, and mystery was an everyday happening. I can't remember the last time i really felt so enchanted and filled with an innocence of heart as i followed this absolutely nonsensical plot which carries an underlying social and socio-psychological message (learn to see the world with the eyes of a child). Perhaps the last time was as i first saw Chitty Chitty bang Bang. I love chitty chitty bang bang it is all the things a children's film should be.I think those of us who got to enjoy going to the cinema and seeing all the Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and all the other late sixties and early seventies stars of the Disney Era of Children's Cinema, were so lucky to get all those movies, such as Mary Poppins, the Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was irrepeatable of course, but i find that BNim's Island is the first movie to have ever come close to the feeling of innocence and boundless possibility that was generated so often in so many movies of my childhood.

Hitman Joe (Nicolas Cage) goes to Bangkok for a month long assignment, to kill four people for Bangkok gang lord Surat.

He hires pickpocket Kong (Shahkrit Yamnarm) as his go-between, a condition of the contract being that the gang will never meet Joe. Contracts from the Bangkok gangsters go through Kong via a nightclub dancer, who becomes romantically involved with Kong.

A professional hit man, who picks someone of the street to do his errands, and after he is finished kills that person. His next assignment takes him to Bangkok, and as usual, he finds a street kid named Kong to help him. After Kong has a close call and learns who he is, asks him to train him and he does. He also meets a local girl who is deaf and spends time with her. However, has a hard keeping his other life from her, and it also appears, the person who hired him, breaks his rule of complete anonymity and tries to find him.

Joe's first execution is done in traffic with him riding a bike and stopping in front of the car, he then shoots the target and all in the car with a semi-automatic gun. His second target is a hotel owner, Joe sneaks in to the penthouse and kills the target by drowning him in the pool.

Originally he plans to kill King before he leaves but after Kong gives him information about the second target he begins to train Kong. For the third execution Kong assists Joe, the kill does not go as planned, with the target nearly getting away before Joe catches him and shoots him after a chase in front of many shocked onlookers. Before the third kill the gang attempt to identify Joe, he warns them off.
