The Observer In Episode 10

Admittedly the producers got me this week, I did not spot the Observer while watching the episode for the first time.

He could be seen in the very first scene of this weeks episode on the surveillance monitor at the Philadelphia Savings Bank just before the cameras were cut.

Last weeks episode "The Dreamscape" is now the lowest ranked episode based on your votes. While a lot of the feedback was positive a lot of people believed that it was not as good as previous episodes. Do you agree with this general consensus?

Critical Myth
The irony of this episode is that its main revelation is something that most fans have probably already assumed. As such, the impact of the episode might have been lost completely as a result.

That revelation is the contention that Massive Dynamic is not only profiting off the results of the experiments collectively known as The Pattern, but that they are directly behind those experiments. It’s certainly not a new thought, since it’s a fairly obvious supposition, but the characters weren’t quite there yet. This brings Agent Dunham to the same suspicions as much of the audience. First off, have my apologies for the lateness of this post. Things have been pretty hectic for me and i have not had the chance to update this blog. Things should get back to normal now.

Critical Myth
While this is another episode dominated by stand-alone elements, there are plenty of connections to the existing continuity and hints of something dark and ominous on the horizon. Walter’s sanity is placed in relative context, and there are hints of future challenges to his freedom.

This early in any series, let alone any season, it’s hard to tell what will be important. Will William Sadler’s character become a recurring thorn in Olivia’s side? Will all these comments about Peter’s past associations and his threats against the doctor ever become a genuine subplot? Let’s just call this episode of Fringe what it was: “The John Noble Hour!” And folks, that’s a mighty fine way to spend an hour, let me tell you. This week’s episode didn’t balance the personal and mythological as well as last week’s entry in the series, but the personal side was so damn good that I really couldn’t care less. Am I interested in the Pattern? Absolutely. But if the show wants to spend a few weeks making us care more about those investigating it, you’ll scant hear a complaint from me.

I have to admit that this week’s use of hypnotism freaked me out. Why? Because hypnotism freaks me out in general, that’s why. And now that Fringe has linked it with Christmas, I’m going to be a nervous wreck waiting for Santa Claus to show up this year. Even more so that usual. Luckily, I won’t be as much of a wreck as the multiple abduction victims this week. Someone hypnotized these people through the use of red and green lights, and they all went sorta kinda crazy. One woman tried to give herself a lobotomy (bad idea), and another brutally murdered his wife (even worse): all from mentally induced hallucinations created to coerce the unwitting subject into finishing a mysterious, complex formula. As usual The Observer was living up to his name and observing in Episode 8. He can be seen in the background for a brief second while Olivia was on the phone talking to Peter. Just before she sees the "red castle".

John Noble Discusses Fringe

What do you find most compelling about the premise of this show?

“In my lifetime, lasers were once considered to be some sort of futuristic, foolish idea. We use them on a daily basis for everything now. I believe we are only tapping the edges of what is potential. As we learn more through quantum mechanics and string theory, we’re finding out that all sorts of things are possible that we didn’t think were. We’re becoming less ignorant as to the possibilities. We can imagine the impossibilities and that tantalizes my imagination. We’re moving so fast that today’s technology is out of place by next week. It’s an exciting time to live in keeping up with these guys. I’m glad to be alive to observe it.”

You sound like you’ve got a head for science in real life. Do you?

“I do. But it’s more on the theoretical level than a practical level. One of my best friends, a fellow who I shared a house with many years and we were at university together, is a brilliant scientist. We would talk. My thought was the art; his was the science. But we could talk for hours. We found common ground in the theory, the theoretical side of it, and so I’ve always understood it, been able to talk about it. But put me in a lab with a whole lot of instruments and I may not do so well.”

This friend of yours is the man who is, let’s say, your blueprint for Walter Bishop, right? Can you share some more details about your friend?

“He’s an extraordinary man and he’s always ridden on the edge of the scientific community, because he’s just absolutely no good at politics. But he’s a genius. Whatever he did, he did with absolute passion and focus. If we were out drinking and partying or if he was playing tennis or football or going after a girl, whatever he did, it was with complete and utter focus. That’s one of the aspects that Walter has as well. He was a lovely man. But at a turn of a hat, he would fight people. He’s a fascinating guy and I’ve based a lot of this on him.”

Is it ever a challenge for you, as an actor, to find some logic, some reason, for the seemingly random things that Walter does?

“As an actor, I always have to find a reason. I can’t just sort of say something out of the blue, so I always find some sort of neural pathway in there, some image that it’s tapped. It’s like we all are: We’ll see, we’ll smell something or we’ll hear a sound and it’ll take us into a memory. You know how that happens to you? It’s like he continually has these little memory jolts. But instead of keeping them to himself, he talks about them, and he’ll say, ‘I had a fruit cocktail once in Atlantic City.’ That’ll just come out because it’s a memory, so he’s quite inappropriate at times.”
