We’re back again! With a show that was recorded a week before the Oscars, and now is being posted almost a month after the Oscars, and somehow manages to spend more time on Michael Bay’s Benghazi movie than any individual Oscar film! We’re nothing if not relevant! We’re nothing if not timely! We’re nothing. 🙁 […]

Okay, so I have a real excuse for the delay this time. Immediately after recording, my PC’s hard drive went and hard crashed. It is only through the heroic efforts of data recovery software Recuva that you’re even able to shoot this hot, sweaty man-cast straight into your cochlea. So thank the good folks of Piriform software, or possibly blame them. Probably blame them. Note that I was going to record an excuse to post as a bookend, but A) Nate was too tired to record it, and B) I was too lazy to go it alone.

In this show! We talk OSCARS OSCARS OSCARS and make a bunch of wrong predictions. Also, I try to defend the fact that I watched Michael Bay’s love note to Hilary Clinton’s Failures instead of watching Moonlight. Also, Nate reveals that he was an awful child.

So sit back, relax, and just let it happen. It’ll all be over soon-ish.

Okay, so, that was probably more real than I wanted it to be. But we’re back! And, for a change, we’re sober. This was recorded at 9AM on Veterans Day, and while you can probably tell for the first 15 minutes, eventually we get back into the groove and it’s the same good ol’ bad ol’ show you’ve come to sporadically expect from us.

One new thing we intro: we do a dramatic reading of this thing I wrote a while back and then published after the election because it seemed to fit. I don’t know if we’ll ever do this again, but for now I’m calling these segments “Tiny Theatre.” Please clap.

I’m out of practice writing these posts, so go ahead and stop reading. Sit back, relax, and just let it happen. Episode 64 is liiiiiiive…

While I’d like to believe that this is the start of a new era of podcasting, I’ve got 13 months of data that shows that’s probably not the case. That said! We’re sort of back! And we haven’t gotten any better at this, but hey, very few things get better after you do them 63 times. But add another 6 times and hey, that’s a whole new ballgame.

On this show! We have some sound issues early on, but don’t worry, it doesn’t make our sensuous voices any less warmly erotic. We soldier on, mainly because we didn’t notice it during recording, and we talk for the first 15 minutes or so about nothing in particular, following by about 45 minutes of more of the same. But we do spend some time on Star Wars: Episode 7, a little more time on The Revenant and The Hateful 8, and even MORE time on Deadpool.

In addition to all that, you get to hear the horrifying story of the mouth injury my son inflicted on himself midway through recording. Don’t worry! He’s fine! But it was horrifying.

So sit down and cuddle up kiddies, it’s time for some good old-fashioned podtainment! Episode 63 is (finally) LIIIIIIIIIVE!

It’s gotta be at least a little weird to be the kid from Boyhood. I mean, I had a camera following me around for most of my teen years, but those VHS tapes are locked safely away in a basement in the Midwest. And even I get a little itchy sometimes, wondering if they’ll get unearthed, and people will see the walking haystack of bad Cobain hair and leaking acne and I’ll lose all the credibility that I’ve gained over the years as a film critic. Or, alternately, we could just do another episode, and let my talking do that by itself.

In this episode! We whine for a bit about how hard it is to coordinate our schedules when one of us is desperately trying to die via sicknesses more usually seen in people that were born in the ’30s before diving into a discussion/review of the Oscar darling, Boyhood. We follow that up with a halfhearted attempt at a review of the movie Foxcatcher, and ultimately throw it to break without either of us definitively saying whether we liked it or not.

After the break, we dive into a spirited, winding, and, much like the movie, ultimately pointless discussion of Inherent Vice. While we disagree on whether or not we liked the movie, we were so caught up in the general vibe of the movie, we couldn’t bring ourselves to actually have an argument, man. We wrap up our slate of reviews with a fairly deep discussion of American Sniper. We both liked it, we both probably will never see the movie ever again.

After the final break, and after I cough my bad lung out over the music, we finish off the show with a brief discussion of the 2015 Academy Awards, which we cut short because, seriously, I’m losing a lung. I tried to edit out most of the attacks, but some of them made it in. Just pretend you live in a world where people don’t vaccinate their kids and you’re walking through a pediatric ward at the hospital.

So glue it down, stick it up, roll it around, or do what you need to do with it, Episode 62 is liiiiiive…

HA! You didn’t think we’d get in our fourth episode of the year, did you?!?! WELL THE JOKE’S ON YOU SWEETHEART BECAUSE HERE IT IS.

Wait, did we really only do four episodes? What the hell are they paying us for?

Wait, they’re not paying us?

Wait, who’s “they,” anyway? Is it us? Are we they? Or is they us? Or am we them?

SPOILER ALERT: IT’S ACTUALLY MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY

IN THIS EPISODE!

We debate whether or not we’ve heard each other’s voices since May, and determine we have not, and also that we haven’t been missing much. Shortly thereafter, we have a brief (and I mean, like, 30 seconds) recap of several movies we saw in 2014, or in the first half of 2014, or let’s be honest, in June of 2014 because that’s when the trailer clips I had were from.

The opening banter complete, we delve into an in-depth, out-of-practice review of Interstellar. The main takeaway is that Nate doesn’t understand the existence of anything as deep and bottomless as Anne Hathaway’s lack of perceivable acting skill.

After that, we roll into a Clip Show! game, only with an M. Night Shyamalamadingdong twist: where Nate usually plays against me, this time Nate and I join forces to play against me from 6 months ago, and then lose.

We wrap up the reviewination with a review of the Michael Keaton renaissance machine, Birdman. We agree on almost all facets of the movie, including the ones that made no fucking sense.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!

Fooled you, we actually take the Wayback Machine all the way back to, what, like October or something, and do a review of David Fincher’s Gone Girl. Sorry if I kind of stumble over my review, because Nate actually sprung this on me in-show, so you missed out on deep, erudite discussion points such as “does anyone really buy Doogie Howser as an obsessive hetero-stalker?”

And that’s a wrap for 2014, folks. So gather round a blazing yule, wear your gayest apparel, pound some eggnog, and crank up this very special holiday episode! We’re HO-HO-HOping you love it! If not, fuck off.

True story: I had one of those two-foot-tall hard plastic Godzilla toys you see to the left. I used to sleep with it instead of a stuffed animal. All well and good, until his rocket fist would go off in the middle of the night and hit me in the eye. Godzilla apparently never heard the saying “love shouldn’t hurt.”

This informed every major relationship of the rest of my life.

In this episode! (Which is now going back to the old numbering, because I’m too lazy to keep remembering to say the right episode number at the top of the show):

I saw Godzilla in the theater, and while Nate didn’t, he agrees with me that you should. Probably not for the same reasons, mind you; I think it’s a “good enough” spectacle movie, and Nate just likes to tell people to spend their money foolishly. He has the best interests of the nation’s economy at heart.

We both saw The Grand Budapest Hotel, and we both agree that if you like Wes Anderson movies, this is one of those. Plus, it has a painting that depicts graphic lesbian foreplay, so, you know, score.

After a break, Nate and I discuss Captain America 2 Colon The Winter Soldier (NOTE: I don’t think he actually has two colons, but you never know what that Super Soldier Serum might do to your innards). We generally agree that it rocks out with its cocks out (NOTE: there are no cocks in this movie)(SECOND NOTE: see other note, above, regarding whether or not Cap has two phalli)(THIRD NOTE: Phalluses?).

After that, I tell Nate to not see The Amazing Spider-Man 2, because it’s bad in a very peculiar way, which leads to a discussion of whether or not we’ve reached Peak Superhero. The fact that we discuss Sony, Fox, and Marvel studios and completely forget to talk about any DC superhero movies probably says something about where DC is with their superhero franchises.

We wrap up that segment with Nate doing a Redbox Roundup on The Lego Movie and telling me that I’m a dumbass for not seeing it. I agree with him.

Finally, we spend twenty minutes or so on the easiest Clip Game I’ve ever put together. Play along at home!

And that’s that. We took almost a quarter of the year off, but we’re back, and we’re bringing the pain. So strap it on, lube it up, and get ready to get an orifice full of greasy podcast gold.

You know, having a kid gives you perspective. For instance, at one point in my life I would have thought that being covered in slightly-spoiled human milk and a touch of feces was a sub-optimal start to the day. Now, it just means that the gas screams are gone. So, win/win.

In this show! The only movie we both saw was Nebraska, so we spend a lot of time mulling that over. We follow that with a full sweep of the Oscar®λ -nominated films. Nate managed to endure all 9, while the Beastie put a crimp in my style and I was only able to tackle 5 of them, but we put on our game faces and wade boldly into that morass.

Heh. Morass.

After that, we do a little bit of prognosticating, and make our picks for who/what/where will win/not-lose the little golden guys. Oh, also, we probably break all kinds of Fair Use rules by playing clips of all of the Oscar-nominated songs as bumpers. And make fun of them.

And? And? Bonus live outtake! You get to hear the story of the time I cried because of Dave Matthews. It’s pretty embarrassing.

All that and more awaits your ear-holes, on this, the IV episode of the II volume of the Greatest Podcast On Earth. Enjoy.

Once again into the breach, dear friends. Welcome to a Very Special Episode of the Watch This Show Podcast. Show. Thing.

You better put on your big-boy pants before wading into the middle section of the show. Nate and I do our best to separate the artist from his art, and see what we can come up with. It’s time to talk about Woody, and the current rehashing of a decades-old, morally reprehensible scandal.

And, given that the news of his death via overdose (allegedly) was released roughly 15 minutes before we recorded, it’s also time to talk about Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

It’s about as deep a discussion as Nate and I ever have, so of course we completely fuck it up. But hey, you get what you pay for.

If that’s more than you can bear, fear not. We have a full slate of the type of entertainment you’ve come to expect from this podcast-show-thing: The Clip Show (new name, which I just made up right now) makes a return, Nate emcee’s a game of Name That Singing Actor, and we have reviews of Her, Blue Jasmine, and The Way Way Back, as well as half reviews of All Is Lost and The Lovely Bones.

In addition, we have songs from Trombone Shorty, Johnny Cash, and even a bluegrass cover of The White Stripes. No, we don’t have permission, but fuck it. We’re linking to them, we’re playing less than half the songs without talking over them, and we’re literally telling everyone to buy the songs. COME AT ME BRO.

So sit back, relax, and stare deep into the train set. This won’t hurt a bit.

Nothing like a new year. A fresh slate, a clean start, a new beginning. You’re gonna join a gym, you’re gonna clean the garage, you’re gonna learn how to cook a flan! You’re gonna learn what a flan is! Okay, you’re going to learn how to pronounce “flan” without sounding like a Midwestern yokel. Okay, you know what? Fuck you Frenchie, and your goddamn omelet cake.

Anyway, sorry for the long hiatus. We were too busy jingling bells, decking halls, egging nogs, and whatnot. But we’re back, and that’s all that matters. That, and the fact that we had considerable technical difficulties, resulting in the show sounding like it’s recorded inside of a tin can that is also, somehow, inside of another, larger tin can. Sorry the free entertainment isn’t up to the high standards of other free entertainment, such as street musicians, and watching bums fight over the best begging spot outside the Starbucks.

In this show!

We do the American Hustle while ogling Amy Adams, we wax poetic about the wonders of double-stick tape, we coronate the new Queen of All Acting.

We take a trip with the Coen Bros. deep Inside Llewyn Davis.

We Catch Fire while…um…

We…complain about…the…Smaug. To a dwarf.

Captain Phillips.

Also, we talk about soundtracks for a bit, and, at Nate’s behest, we wrap up with audio stolen from Funny or Die of Michael Shannon reading a sorority chick’s letter to her sisters. It’s worth a listen.

So jump on that treadmill at the gym you just joined and get ready to spend the next 75 minutes running yourself into a coma with our voices as the soundtrack of your own personal denouement. SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTANCES BE FORGOT MY ASS.

The Inside Llewyn Davis Soundtrack is used under the tenets of <a title="Seriously, please don't sue us.
Hey, remember when you were a kid, all those years ago? Remember little Sally Neidermeyer next door? The little freckled kid with braces and patchy rosacea? And remember when you went away to camp one summer and when you came back it seemed like little Sally had grown up? The rosacea was gone, the braces were gone, and her mom stopped cutting her hair at home and sent her to Blanche for a perm instead? Yeah?

Well that’s kind of what this show is. We’ve been gone for a while, and now we got makeup and boobs.

And what boobs they are! I bought some extra equipment, and now I’ve got the power to share sounds across the Internet. It’s a whole new world, folks. Nate and I can actually comment on music, play in clips from trailers, hell, we even work in Clarence Gilyard Jr.! If that’s not a draw, then shit, I don’t know what to do with you.

We start off the the showfest with a slobbery review of Sandy Bullock and George Clooney in what’s probably the best movie we’ve seen this year. DON’T SPOIL IT FOR YOURSELF! WAIT UNTIL YOU LISTEN TO THE SHOW TO FIND OUT WHICH MOVIE IT IS!! After that I spend a brief time talking about Opie’s new (ish?) joint, Rush. And a little while later, we review the anthology-ish Gosling vehicle, The Place Beyond the Pines. We round out the review-a-palooza with Nate’s payment for a bet he made more than a year ago and finally made good on. I’m not going to spoil it, but it’s worth listening for, folks. He experiences real pain here.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! We didn’t just review movies! I created what we like to call The Clip Game! (note that the exclamation point is part of the title). Nate tries to name movies from obscure clips. How could that not be amazing? We’ll show you!

Also, we play a clip from Marc Maron’s podcast, WTF, without his permission, and then talk about it! It’s great!

I’m probably even forgetting stuff. This is the best podcast ever, you guys. Best ever. Just burn down the Internet, we finished it. It’s all done. Go home.

Goodbye.

MUSIC PLAYLIST OF MUSIC WE DIDN’T GET PERMISSION TO PLAY SO TOTALLY GO BUY THEIR STUFF SO THAT THEY AREN’T TOO ANGRY AT US:
