"ALM" tends to be a buzzword that many people don't understand. In fact, the Wikipedia definition is even pretty weak. ALM isn't the application of business management practicess to software development. In fact, I think the last two decades have proven that the old model of tool vendors pushing prescriptive software development models doesn't work. We're defining Agile ALM as "toolsmithing" - the application of tools to support people and the processes they need to work best.

Check it out: http://www.thoughtworks-studios.com/resources/white-papers

Off Topic: Turning Trump into Perot

Picture the following Whitehouse Staff meeting:

Staffer 1: Man, the birthers sure love Donald Trump. I'd love to run against him in the general. We could turn him into a Ross Perot type figure - taking the sails out of the mainstream GOP candidates by splitting the Tea Party out. At a minimum he could make the GOP primary even tougher.

Staffer 2: Let's say that was realistic. Blue Sky -- what could we do to get Trump's bid going?

Obama: Release the long form birth certificate.

Staffer 1: Seriously?

Obama: He's staked a big part of his candidacy on this birther stuff - he has to have a plan B. If I prove that I really was born here definitively, what's he going to say?

Staffer 1: That he got you to release it. He'd take credit for making you prove it finally.

Obama: Right, and it will boost his profile among the crazies. It will also kill him with independents. I like him because the hardcore Christian conservatives will never vote for him.

Staffer 2: And just in case he is a decent candidate, we talk big about the national distraction he's created now, so we'll have a strong argument about his judgement in a general.

Obama: Great. Call up my lawyer. We're going to get Hawaii to release it. They will - it probably costs them several hundred thousand dollars a year in time to respond to all the requests and the Governor is a friend.

---

This isn't a no-win for Obama. I don't believe that's he's trying to end the controversy. All reasonable people have moved on from this a while ago. The second I saw this was released, my gut told me it was about Trump; about giving him momentum -- momentum with the folks that would believe the birther stuff no matter what. The nice thing about pushing Trump over Palin et. al. is that many Christian conservatives won't vote him -- he's only got a shot with fiscal conservatives, Tea Party birthers, and huge fans of his show. This could backfire, but I think it's actually quite smart.

Engadget gets a quick hands on with the portrait. Notice despite its accelerometer support, no videos or pics to date show it in portrait, and the device does not switch modes when the orientation switches. Check out the handover on the Engadget video. No flicker. What's the deal RIM? Will you come out and say it's primarily a landscape device?

Mingle != Mingle's configuration

[Obligatory note: This post, as with all my posts on this blog, does not reflect the views of ThoughtWorks, my employer.]
I'm head of product development for ThoughtWorks Studios. In that capacity, I receive a lot of feedback about our products. This feedback ranges from nuts-n'-bolts-feature-requests to general impressions about our suite of tools. In the impression category, there's one complaint that I hear frequently -- that Mingle is too heavy/complicated. I used to be puzzled by this -- our most devoted customers praise its flexibility, simplicity and ease of use. How could Mingle be both simple and too heavy? A few months ago, after digging around on this issue with users, I realized one of the root causes. People confuse how an individual Mingle project is configured, with Mingle itself. In other words, if a team or an organization decides to use Mingle to create a difficult/heavy process, then users new to that Mingle instance assume that Mingle itself is the problem, not the configuration.
Mingle is a blank slate. Mingle's ease of use is highly correlated to the simplicity of the process you follow -- if your team's process is a bear, Mingle will be complex too. It requires a different mental model to use effectively. Most people approach project management tools the same way they approach their email client, i.e. they expect a fixed structure and navigational model. For example, most people know that email clients have a common affordance called an "inbox". Thus whenever you encounter a new client, you look for an navigational element called "inbox". Mingle does not have a fixed structure like this (with a few exceptions such as the Overview page).
Mingle is much closer to Microsoft Excel. When you open a random spreadsheet the first time, the only structural affordances are infrastructure -- the sheets, columns, cells, formulas, and rows. As a user, you have no idea how the spreadsheet works because its structure is based on its function. Until you understand the function, you don't understand the spreadsheet. Mingle has list views, grid views, tree views, transitions, queries, custom properties, and macros. Mingle allows you to compose these elements in a very powerful way to manage, collaborate on, and track your work. When you open a Mingle project there isn't a place called "plan" unless you've made it or it's part of a template you're using. That's a mental shift for a lot of people. Once you make that shift, the possibilities are pretty cool. This shift is why we see some customers using Mingle not just in their software teams, but in their legal, HR, and marketing groups too.
If you are using a Mingle project that's complicated, talk to your project admin; there's a good chance that the configuration is in your way. I would suggest you follow that people over process and tools thing some people are talking about. :) If you're looking for information you can't find in your project, take a look at the Explore Mingle page to understand some of the general mechanics behind creating your own views. If you're still having trouble, hit us up at our community site.
This clarification in no way takes us off the hook for making Mingle simpler, nor is it an excuse for things we do need to improve. We want to continue to make Mingle the best and most flexible collaboration tool on the planet. We own Mingle's flexibility -- to the extent that we give you a sharp knife you can get cut. Hopefully, with a little knowledge, teams can wield that knife more effectively.

This looks pretty hot despite the hipsters in the commercial. I might have to pick one up. In particular, the iPhone's native speakerphone is a hair above mediocre. This thing would be invaluable for mobile conference calls especially if it has the battery life that the spec sheet claims.

My only reservation is that I already have a doc speaker-system and a crappy speaker/subwoofer setup at home. The office has two squeezebox clients running off a central server. So, I actually wouldn't have that much use for it. Decisions... Decisions...

Engadget is reporting that HTC's CEO Peter Chou said that the company has the "same focus" on Android and Windows Phone 7. In April, HTC settled a patent infringement case with Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2010/apr10/04-27mshtcpr.mspx
The terms of this agreement were very vague, except for a blurb about "paying royalties." My guess is that Microsoft negotiated strong WF7 line up support in return for reduced Andriod royalties. Why else would HTC go from legal foe to strongest collaborator in 6 months?

If you’re mainly interested in Netflix streaming, I can’t see buying one of these over an Apple TV. Am I missing something?

Roku does have other content, like, for example, MLB.tv. And the Apple TV doesn’t have an API for an App Store. But: what if Apple opens up AirPlay to iPhone and iPad apps? Then the iPhone/iPad MLB At Bat app could stream video to the Apple TV.

via daringfireball.net

A cheaper price, dead simple interface, USB support at the top end, 1080p, and Hulu+ aren't a bad combination.. I'm loving my >1 year old Roku. Airplay is attractive, but I probably won't add an AppleTV to sit next to my Roku unless I make an impluse/fanboy purchase.

At ThoughtWorks, we've been saying this for years. In fact, it is one of my top ten gripes with core-out-of-the-book Scrum. Not only does burning down hours encourage you to take credit for work that's not done, it assumes that work and people's imputed "capacity" to do it (in hours) have a linear relationship. Work completed is a substantially better measure, whether it be points, bananas or story counts for sophisticated teams.

Comcast to Take On Netflix with Fancast rebadge?

Netflix now offers thousands of programs via Broadband lines on such devices as the XBox 360, Blu-ray players and even the new Apple TV set-top. The lineup includes HD and SD programming.

But Comcast says it can compete effectively with Netflix.

"I think we have all the ingredients to compete effectively with the Netflix offering,” Angelakis said, according to Home Media. “It boils down to us taking those ingredients and executing better with a specific plan.”

via tvpredictions.com

Xfinity = a rebranded Fancast. Check out the Xfinity branding on Fancast.com. Comcast hasn't been doing much with Fancast these days. I don't see how it can effectively compete with Netflix via more of the same -- Fancast has been around in it's current form for 2.5 years. Will they offer a streaming only cable plan that's cheap enough to compete Netflix? I highly doubt it, as it would erode their current margins. Can they offer more than Hulu+ at a similar price point? As a disgruntled Comcast customer, I don't see how they can "compete effectively."

In a study published in the Sept. 17 issue of Science, researchers report that people who are good at introspection, or "thinking about thinking," have a greater volume of gray matter in the area of the brain that lies directly behind the eyes.

I am moving my old blog at http://chad.wathington.com to posterous in few days. I've already migrated the posts below and most of the infrastructure. The last bits will come in a few days. My hope is that the new blog will encourage my thoughts to flow out a bit more, in a longer and more consistent form than Twitter.
