They actually found the Watkins products in Target, and since they are sold on using natural products as much as possible, they tried some of them and found the quality and value to be outstanding. Better than other “natural” products they had tried.

By “natural products”, I mean those that are environmentally friendly and free of unnecessary chemicals and harsh additives. The buzzwords used to characterize the Watkins home care products, for example, are “plant based cleaning agents”, “biodegradable”, and “non-toxic”. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Watkins offers many other natural product lines as well.

Back to my prospect – he is seriously considering starting a Watkins business, and it all came from experiencing the value and quality of the products, and discovering that there was a home based income opportunity there.

Actually, this is true with almost all home based network marketing businesses. One thing that makes network marketing so appealing is that almost anyone start a real business with just a small investment.

Consider this – most network marketing businesses can be initially started for less than $500. This will include product samples as well as business building and marketing tools. Many companies offer additional options for getting started that cost less, although these lower entry points are often “bare bones” and don’t include everything you need for building a serious business.

Either way, cost of entry for a network marketing business is very low compared to other traditional business models, such as franchising and local independent retail storefronts.

That said, though, here is the downside. For many people, easy in = easy out. Network marketing done properly is hard work. I’m all for online network marketing and sponsoring, but for best success you really need to build your Watkins business with a blend of online and offline methods.

This is especially true if you are a casual Internet user, and if most of your online experience is limited to doing emails and browsing.

There is definitely a learning curve if you want to be successful with online sponsoring, and you can do it, just be aware that there is some knowledge you’ll need and some skills you’ll want to develop.

Here is a key observation about online network marketing and building your Watkins business online in general.

The Internet is a very powerful way to get leads and find prospects for your business. It shouldn’t be considered as your only business building method, though. While your “warm market” leads won’t last forever, you can always expand your local prospecting by asking for referrals, advertising in the right places, etc.

I’ve been fortunate to sponsor many prospects who came online looking specifically for the Watkins products and also to learn more about the home business opportunity. The same thing is true of people in your local area. If a friend suggests an opportunity and a person to contact, that carries more weight and trust factor than just finding someone’s blog in a search and going there. To be successful in today’s online environment, you need to have a presence in social media as well as everywhere else you can online.

Online network marketing and building a Watkins business that way takes a little time to get off the ground….but you can do it and I can show you how….but I strongly suggest that you work hard offline and build your online presence up gradually. There are over 300 MILLION people in the US alone. Do you need to sponsor all of them??? NO! Do you need to sponsor even 1 percent of them (3 million)??? NO! How about one one thousandth of one percent of them (3,000)??? NO!

All you need to do is sponsor FIVE of them! Five excited, serious people who are willing to work, is all you need to do to create a lifestyle that most people only dream about with no hope of attaining it.

Who are these five mythical people? Is one of them your next-door neighbor? Your cousin from Arkansas? Your boss? Your daughter? A couple that lives 2 blocks from you who you haven’t met yet? Your hairdresser? The guy that comes to deliver your cold pizza 20 minutes late?

Could be any of them – most likely it’s the cold-pizza delivery guy!

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you who they are and you don’t know either – not yet. Your job as a Watkins Associate is to find those 5 people.

Unfortunately, we can’t put a classified ad in the paper and say, “WANTED – Those five mythological MLM leaders,” and expect to find them. Hey, maybe that’s not a bad idea! <grin>

So we have to find them by finding all the people that AREN’T them until we run across the fabulous five, one at a time – generally by accident.

Here’s a quick idea of what they look like. They will be excited when they get in, knowing exactly what they want to get out of the business – a new home, out of their job, a boat, whatever it is, they’ll know what it is. They’ll see that the Summit Group System makes sense and it’s what they need to do to make their dreams, so they’ll do the first steps and make their commitments and be committed to them. They’ll order their products right away and when their order comes in, they start trying all of them, and they’ll probably call you and rave about them.

They will make a list of hundreds of people, and after their first training meeting with you, their sponsor, they’ll start contacting all of those people. They will be talking to lots of people and remaining excited. Excited when they aren’t excited. On the days and weeks where things don’t go right, things are slow, they get dumped on by somebody. They will continue on, working on their goal.

Life will smack them too, just like it does all of us. But that won’t stop them. They don’t quit, they don’t stop, they don’t slow down. Even though they have all the fears and doubts that we all experience, deep down, they know what the final outcome will be to their work, and all they have to do is keep it up to reach their goal.

Following are a few real stories, although I’ve used made up names so as not to embarrass anyone. And these are only a few stories among many that I hear about each and every month.

Whenever you talk to Amber, you can’t help but get more excited yourself. She even motivates her upline! She’s excited about her business, she knows what she wants, she has her list of people, and she’s out doing what she needs to do, talking to lots of people, working her business. She and her husband, Bob, have had more than their share of life challenges during their life and their Watkins career, but she’s always there on the conference calls, sending emails, talking on the phone, and continually working her business. What does Amber need to do to be a success? Find 5 more Ambers!

What would most people do if they were working 75-115 hours each week and wanted to start a Watkins business. The AVERAGE person would say they don’t have time to start a business. They’d give excuses about why they weren’t working their business. But Chuck is not average. Coming off of one all-night shift of driving his truck one night, foregoing sleep, Chuck drove 3+ hours to LaCrosse to meet with his sponsors to learn more about the business then had to rush back to start a second shift.

Another time in the middle of a truck driving shift on a Thursday night, Chuck rushed home, jumped out of the truck still running, and ran in the house to be on the Thursday night Conference call. Average people would just skip it and say, “Oh man, I had to work!” He has his list of almost 400 people and is working it.

After a long dry spell of people saying no to the business, he didn’t give up, but continued working it in between his 75-115 hour a week work schedule, and is starting to see the results of his work. Who would like to have Chuck in their group?

Last night on the conference call many of you heard Debbie’s 8-year old daughter who sold over $80 worth of products at the playground! Debbie’s soooo excited, loves the products, talks to everyone she sees and has a goal of winning a trip to Disney World. We could learn a lot from her!

How about Steve Bretzke? How many would like to have Steve in your downline? He started out with a kit and a dream and nobody in his group, just like you and us. He was definitely excited, serious, and willing to work.

It’s really easy for all of us to describe who ISN’T one of the 5:

• “I can’t go to the Conference because it’s at the same time as my vacation.”
• “I don’t have time, I’m working two jobs.”
• “I have a new job, and it’s just taking up all of my time.”
• “I don’t have the money to buy our products yet or do the business. “
• “I’m going to school and working a job, trying to get ahead, don’t have time for this.”
• “There’s just too many things going on right now. I’ll start later.”

Yeah, we’ve all heard those things. You just want to scream! “Hey YOU! Don’t you understand what this business will do for you??? In just a few short years, you could be set for LIFE!!! Give up a TV show or two and build your future, for Pete’s sake!”

Some of you know our story, Jan and me. To make it short, soon after we got into Watkins (starting 9 days after we joined) and for a period of about 2 years:

• we were both injured in a car accident
• Jan’s father developed a serious illness and Jan had to leave town to stay with him for months
• I lost my business
• we lost our house
• we moved to the country, mostly to escape bill collectors and car re-possessors
• our two fantastic dogs who were family members died prematurely, one not long after the other
• my father died suddenly
• Jan’s mother died after a grueling stay in the hospital
• I ended up getting a horrible job and almost a nervous breakdown…

We spent 2 years CRINGING every time the phone rang, probably a collection agency or bill collector or other bad news… but it could be a prospect, customer or an associate, so we had to answer it (we had no caller ID!). Though totally broke, we still bought our Watkins products every month, went to the conference each year and worked our business. It would have been so EASY to quit. To just tell ourselves, let’s do this business later, I don’t feel like being excited. We proved, to my complete satisfaction, that it’s not talent or some secret advertising miracle that allows you to succeed. It’s not quitting and continuing on – no matter what’s going on in your life.

So, to summarize my ramblings, I’m trying to say that all you’ve got to do to succeed is to keep plugging away at it. Treat each new person as one of your 5 and like in the old TV show, “To Tell The Truth”, (“Will the real NUMBER FIVER please stand up?”), you’ll eventually see them stand up and things will get even more exciting!

After discussing some of his questions, he asked me if there was anyone in his local area that he could sign up with.

I run into this question from time to time, and would like to share how I handle it when someone asks me this.

First, I think it’s important to understand why they are concerned about it. You can often find out more by simply asking your prospect, but some will be hesitant to tell you what they are really thinking.

In many cases, it comes down to this:

• an assurance that someone will be reachable when they need assistance

• a desire to get direct hands on training, especially if their desired focus in Watkins is local retailing

• a previous involvement in another network marketing business where local training was the norm

• a bad experience in the past with a long distance sponsor who signed them up and then disappeared

• a lack of rapport, which is especially common if all communication has been via email only

When I’m discussing starting a Watkins business with someone who seems hesitant to sign up with me because I’m not local, I first try to find out more about their concern. If they seem interested in building a strong business through sponsoring, I make it a point to stress that the Summit Group team has the experience and proven success in Watkins to guide them from wherever they are.
