HinT is joining with the Halesworth Town Council Jubilee Committee, Vision (Mencap), and Skip Bunting to make sure that the town is full of colour for the Jubilee by re-using what we’ve already got in plenty - your old material.

Not just for the Jubilee, also good for the Olympics, summer fetes, school events, and your own back garden.

HinT’s purpose is to support actions that mean our town can meet its energy needs without oil which is more and more expensive, hard to get out of the ground, and damaging to use. So instead of new plastic bunting, we'll be upcyling old material into new. And if we're really going to fill the Thoroughfare, it could take as much as a mile. That's a huge number of pennants to sew.

We'll end up with colourful bunting (not all red, white and blue, Vision is leading on patriotic-coloured pennants) for many events.

Come and cut and sew, and bring us your material :

Susie’s Favourite Recipes

Gingerbread Bites

100 g (4 oz) Butter
350 g (12 oz) Castor Sugar
1 egg, beaten
250 g (9 oz) Self-Raising Flour
5 ml (1 level tsp) Ground Ginger
Lightly greased tray

* Pre-heat oven to 150 C, 300 F, Gas Mark 2.

* Whisk the butter and sugar together until mixture is pale and fluffy.

* Beat in the egg, a little at a time.

* Sift the flour and ginger into the mixture.

* Work in with a fork until you have a fairly firm dough.

* Roll the dough into small balls and put them on the tray.

* Bake for 40-45 minutes until crisp, well risen, hollow and golden.

* I sometimes add a few chocolate drops to the mixture.

* Enjoy them when they are still warm.

A farce coming to Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre next week looks set to

have a health warning added after a patron watching a performance at a

venue in Derbyshire laughed so much she leant forward and broke her nose

on the seat in front!

Nurse Claire Rimmer, from Glossop was watching a performance of the

national tour of Dave Freeman comedy A Bedfull Of Foreigners at Buxton

Opera House last week when the accident happened. She was laughing so

hysterically she choked and lent forward to cough and banged her nose on

the seat in front.

Being in the nursing profession she realised she had broke her nose and

the next day had a big bruise, black eyes as well as her broken nose.

Still laughing about the freak accident, Claire commented, “Laughter

is the best medicine and the broken nose was worth it after watching A

Bed Full Of Foreigners - you have to see the farce to believe how

brilliant and hilarious it is, with an exceptional cast.”

A Bedfull of Foreigners which stars Damian Williams along with a full

supporting cast which includes late funny man Les Dawson’s daughter,

Charlotte plays just two nights at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre, on Mon

13 & Tues 14 Feb 2012 at 7.30.

Raveningham Gardens Snowdrop Spectacular, Feb 12 to Mar 4 2012

Raveningham Gardens opens for the snowdrop season from Sunday, February 12th to Sunday, March 4th 2012.

Drifts of snowdrops in the main garden will be on display daily from 11am to 4pm (weekdays) and 2pm to 4pm on Sundays (dusk if earlier) – closed Saturdays.

Admission is adults £4, concessions £3.50 and children under 16 free; proceeds go to Priscilla Bacon Lodge, a centre for specialist palliative care services in Norwich. Tea and home made cakes served on Sundays and sunny days.

Raveningham Hall is the home of Sir Nicholas and Lady Bacon. It was Sir Nicholas’ mother, Priscilla Bacon, who added snowdrops to the garden.

The 18th century Walled Kitchen Garden with its large glasshouses will be open and visitors will also be able to enjoy views across the new lake established at the turn of the Millennium and the contemporary sculpture in the gardens.

Working to improve the oral health of children | NHS Norfolk and Waveney

NHS Norfolk and Waveney is working with dentists, schools and staff in early years settings to improve the oral health of children across the county.

Under its dental health strategy, which has the support of the Norfolk Local Dental Committee, any new early years settings starting from April 2012 will have a member of staff accountable for improving the oral health of its children.

They will supervise children brushing their teeth, and liaise with parents, schools, the oral health promotion team and local dentists.

NHS Norfolk and Waveney is also exploring ways to bring oral health training into schools so that staff can support pupils to understand the importance of diet and oral hygiene.

In addition, it continues to work with the dental profession to reinforce "Delivering Better Oral Health" guidance from the Department of Health.

Linda Hillman, a Consultant in Dental Public Health at NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: "We have worked hard over the last five years to ensure there is sufficient good quality NHS dentistry locally.

"It is important that parents and carers introduce their children to the dentist in the pre school years, so that they can be advised how to avoid dental problems in later life. We are also working hard to ensure that children's oral health is high on the agenda in early years settings and schools."

She added: "I would also encourage people who haven’t been to a dentist for some time to make an appointment and get their teeth checked. Dentists are used to seeing people who are nervous. Too often we come across people who have suffered longstanding pain or discomfort, and then have needed to see a dentist out of hours."

More than £100,000 is being invested to make more NHS dental appointments available in Norfolk.

The funding will provide treatment for around 1240 new NHS patients in three key "hotspots": In Practices to the north of Norwich, around the A11 corridor and around the A140 south of Norwich.

The funding has come from the Department of Health. NHS Norfolk and Waveney applied for money and was awarded £111,000. The aim is to create space for patients who have not been seen by a dentist within the past 24 months.

Nikki Cocks, Director of Primary Care, said: "We know there are hotspot areas in Norfolk where access to NHS dentistry must be improved. This extra funding from the Department of Health enables more people see an NHS dentist in those locations."

NHS Norfolk and Waveney has significantly improved access to NHS dentistry recently.

Since 2006 £3.8m has been invested in Norfolk and about £1m has been invested in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area.

Access remains higher in Norfolk and Waveney than the national average.

There are standard charges payable for most NHS oral care. However it is free if, when the treatment starts, you are aged under 18, aged under 19 and in full-time education, pregnant, or a mother who’s given birth in the last 12 months, staying at an NHS hospital where your doctor is the hospital dentist, or receiving certain benefits.

Dear HighTider,

I'm very proud to bring you all the details of HighTide Festival 2012, based at The Cut, The Rifle Hall and Printworks in our home of Halesworth, Suffolk.

We produced four productions in 2011. In 2012 we’re producing eighteen.

Why? Because all eighteen have at their heart extraordinary playwrights who have asked to share their stories with you.

How? Thanks to you. The HighTide Festival is increasingly known as a home where innovative artists are rewarded by playing to engaged and game audiences.

And so, this Festival is welcoming many new partners: established theatres in Headlong, The Nuffield Southampton and the Public Theater in New York; leading companies in nabokov, Bad Physics and curious directive; and the next generation in Lucy Jackson, Utter and Jon McLeod.

An increase in size has enabled greater variety, and there are too many ‘firsts’ to list them all here. We develop and produce all the work you will see, and as such we hope you experience the festival as we intend it: by seeing everything. The two weekends are full of events, morning through night. And it’s ‘Pay What You Can’ for shows in the weekdays if you prefer to spread out your viewing.

I look forward to introducing you to our artists. Please do join us on weekend evenings from 8pm for an informal drink in The Rifle Hall, our latest festival venue.

The Upstairs Gallery in Beccles is celebrating winning their 10th award, and have received a BRONZE level award for their genuine commitment to laying their part in greener policies.

Michelle Payne, the gallery manager says:

'We wanted to take steps on ensuring that our business could also make a contribution to the carbon reduction, all be it a small business, if everyone make an effort to participate, this could greatly increase the chances of becoming a much greener county.

We already have reduced our output by 3.1 tonnes, and have been active in seeking a grant to reduce electricity output, as well as doing the smaller things and making our clients and staff aware of the switch off policies, recycling consumables, and measuring consumption. You can make a huge difference just by taking small actions.

We also have reduced our bills greatly by having an auditor assess where we could save money, and thanks to that it saved our business a great deal on our bills and raised concerns of overcharging by a particular electricity provider, these savings are greatly needed, as we are working as a not-for-profit model, and are here for the community and its creatives. All of our staff are volunteers without pay, and our efforts are greatly appreciated by many of our artists and educational visits and visitors in the region.'

National Apprenticeship Week 2012: More than 850 NHS apprenticeships taken up across the county

More than 850 apprenticeships have been taken up in clinical and non-clinical roles throughout the county, since the Norfolk and Waveney NHS Apprenticeship Programme began three years ago.

Last year, NHS Norfolk and Waveney was ranked as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer 2011, as well as being awarded the Macro Employer of the Year Award in the East of England region for its Apprenticeship Programme.

NHS Norfolk and Waveney co-ordinates the Apprenticeship Programme across the county. National Apprenticeship Week continues until February 10 and the following events are happening in Norfolk:

* Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust

Simon Wright MP is due to visit Elliot House to speak to apprentice Jack Murphy on February 10th 2012.

* The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn

An open day with practical activities takes place on February 10 for prospective entrants to apprenticeships.

There will be display boards at the hospital throughout the week, publicising the Apprenticeship Programme.

Case studies of staff who started their careers as apprentices will be published in a Norfolk Apprenticeship Programme "Hall of Fame".

* Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

A stand with details about the Apprenticeship Programme will be in the West Atrium of the hospital all week.

* James Paget University Hospital, Gorleston

An apprenticeship information point will be in the hospital foyer all week.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, East Coast Community Healthcare CIC and NHS Norfolk and Waveney have also been holding initiatives as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

NHS staff posts are graded from 1 to 9. Apprenticeships are a framework of qualifications that are available to all new and existing staff in bands 1 to 4 of the staffing structure, who are between the ages of 16 and 69.

Since the programme began in 2009, apprentices have secured substantive posts, as well as university places across the county.

Ian Tegerdine, Director of Workforce at NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: “We fully support apprenticeships, and view them as an excellent way for existing and new NHS employees to gain valuable qualifications.

“All frameworks are made up of the same four core elements: a diploma, a technical certificate, and key/functional skills in maths and English.

"There are four levels available, level 2, 3, 4 and 5, and we are delighted that they have proved so popular among new and existing employees.”

Apprenticeships are available in the following skills: pharmacy, business administration, customer service, health, health and social care, information technology, accountancy, support services and horticulture.

There are also qualifications available in management and facilities management, and employees can study to become an Allied Health Professional.

Self catering cottage holidays are a great choice for people not looking to hire an expensive hotel and enjoy the freedom of self-catering. Hiring a cottage is a very economical way of experiencing new and favourite parts of the UK, and allows groups of family and friends to holiday together, or for couples to enjoy a romantic retreat in a cottage for two. Many people do not realise that pets friendly cottages exist, which provides greater opportunity for many people to get away without worry. We will also highlight some examples of these.

Norfolk Broads

With its famous waterways, the Norfolk Broads are an ideal place to test your mooring skills and enjoy a cottage holiday in Norfolk. North Norfolk Coast

To anyone living in Norfolk the wonders of the North Norfolk coast are no secret, but to anyone visiting their sheer beauty are a great discovery. This unspoilt area is an excellent choice for a self catering holiday in Norfolk at any time of year.

The North Norfolk Country Path follows the coast through the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is rich in salt marshes, dunes, and clay cliffs, as well as quiet villages notable for their flint and brick architecture. Ending in Cromer, a Cromer cottage would make a good place to stay with its numerous places to eat, or a Wells next the Sea cottage, which is a good centre for exploring the North Norfolk Heritage Coast. A narrow-gauge steam railway runs from Wells to Little Walsingham, 5 miles south. In the Middle Ages this obscure hamlet was one of the most popular places of pilgrimage in all of England. Today's pilgrims can visit the remains of the medieval priory and two holy wells.

A Sheringham cottage would also make a good choice for the discerning traveller. Sheringham consists of two areas – upper and lower Sheringham. Renowned for its crab fishing, Lower Sheringham lies on the cost and is home to Edwardian and Victorian architecture. Upper Sheringham is situated a few miles inland with fantastic countryside walks, ideal for cycling and horse riding on your self catering holiday in Norfolk.

Suffolk Coast

The Denes is a delightful rural shingle beach, backed by the marshes of the River Blyth - great for walking the dog! The Pier and North of Pier beaches are traditional resort beaches - a mixture of sand and shingle - great for families and offering an ideal place to sunbath and bathe. A Southwold self catering holiday would be recommended for anyone who is looking for a beach holiday of the highest standard.

A few miles inland lies the idyllic village of Westleton, frequent winner of the Suffolk Best Kept Village award.

The famous concert hall in Snape is found a further 8 miles away. The close proximity makes a Westleton cottage or a Snape cottage both ideal alternatives for enjoying a relaxing Suffolk holiday in one of Britain’s finest landscapes.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE WEEKEND WEATHER

After last weekend when only the Ladies' 3rds managed to play it is fingers crossed for better weather this coming weekend when despite only three Ladies' teams being in action on Saturday we still have a busy programme of matches including an especially hectic Sunday at Weybread with seven matches across the two pitches.

Last Saturday Julie Podd and her Ladies' 3rds must have wondered why they were playing on a very cold afternoon when all the other matches had been called off! But play they did and they came away from Kings Lynn with an excellent 2-0 win over Pelicans 2nds with second half goals by MOTM Catriona MacIver (a member of the triumphant U16 indoor team) and Dominique Dyball. This win has moved the team up into third place in the Premier Division of the Norfolk League just behind second placed UEA who have three games in hand. The 3rds in common with two of our other Ladies' teams now have two weekends off. But there will be no rest for the Ladies' 1sts (weather permitting) who have a tough match away to local rivals Ipswich on Saturday (12.00) after the frustration of their postponed game against Maidstone which will now be played on Sunday week. Last season the team achieved an excellent 1-0 win in the corresponding fixture so a repeat this week would be very handy! Meantime the Ladies' 6ths will also be looking for much needed points when they entertain Norwich City 4ths (10.30) while the Ladies' 4ths have a home friendly against Broadland 2nds (12.15).

Silent Auction and Party (Saturday 10 March – clubhouse 7.30pm). I hope you have this event in your diary! Your support of the evening would be much appreciated. Lots are still required if we are to match the nearly £2300 we raised in a similar event in 2008. So if you kindly have an item or 'Promise' for inclusion, PLEASE let me know as soon as possible.

Back to this weekend's hockey at Weybread where on Saturday the Men's 2nds have a very demanding game against league leaders Ramgarhia (2.15) who have lost only one match all season and who won 4-2 when the teams met at the end of October. Another two or three wins are essential for Martin Fields and his team as they are only five points above the relegation zone. The Men's 5ths (4.00) and Men's 6ths (12.30) are also at home to, respectively, North Walsham and Dereham 5ths and a win for the 5ths is vital if they are to retain their outside chance of promotion in another very good season while the 6ths will be looking for three points to maintain their encouraging mid-table position.

Sunday at Weybread promises to provide a feast of hockey with the U16 Boys getting the ball rolling against Pelicans (10.15) in the EHB Midlands League 1 (before they play Rutland at 2.30) and next on the water-based will be the Men's Over 50s when they host Reading (12.00) in the quarter-finals of the EHB Masters Cup. Philip Cobbald and his squad have scored seven goals in each of the three earlier rounds (all away and with only a total of two goals conceded) and another exciting match is in prospect before the Men's 1sts take on league leaders Canterbury (2.15). The Kent team have recovered well from the disappointment of their swift relegation from the national premier league after just one season and to-date are undefeated in 2011/12 - so what better time for this record to be shattered! (After last Saturday's postponement the Men's 1sts now play Oxted away on Saturday week.) Meanwhile the U18 Girls take on Havering in the second round of the EHB Plate (11.00) having beaten Norwich City 4-0 in the previous round and the U16 Girls play Ipswich (4.00) to decide which team goes through to the Regional stage as EHB East League 1 winners after both sides have already qualified having won their four matches to-date.

a) The Great Britain women on their splendid silver medal in the Champions Trophy in Argentina. With coach Danny Kerry (ex-Pelicans HC and NCHA!) their preparations for London 2012 are going well.

b) Mark Pearn (GB, England and East Grinstead) and Alex Danson (GB, England and Reading) on being named UK Players of the Year for 2011 following the annual poll conducted amongst the British members of the Hockey Writers' Club. Mark (my favourite England player alongside Simon Mason!) also won the award in 2000.
