After a launch of launch of epic proportions, Controversy is back next week with a bigger badder line up. DJ KAOS (Rong/DFA) will be playing his only Melbourne show with local show stopper KNIGHTLIFE providing support.

ROXANNE & CONTROVERSY PRESENT:
DJ KAOS (DFA/BERLIN) & KNIGHTLIFE (CUTTERS RECORDS)

Roxane Parlour (Level 3, 2 Coverlid Place, Melb CBD)
17th July

DJ Kaos and Cutters flagship artist KNIGHTLIFE will be releasing savage beasts in the mainroom along side the Controversy resident line up – Chestwig, Otologic, Lewie Day and Luke Brown. The infamous ‘parlor room party’ will be in full swing with Jean Pierre, Superhandz v Francis Chang, Ronzel v Wolfgang, Waves at Night Djs, Flirt Cub Djs and Campfire.

DJ Kaos is an integral part of the Berlin underground scene, producing a variety of twisted dance music for a number of years now. He’s performed all over the Globe, from Europe, Japan to the US. He has released original music on such seminal dance labels as Eskimo, Kitsune, Playhouse, as well as Rong Music and DFA. His remixes have proven in demand, remixing everyone from !!! to Roxy Music to the New Young Pony Club.
My favourite is Italians’ Do It Better wondermites Tiedye’s magic touch to Kaos’ “Love the Nite Away” - purrs at me everytime I hear it.

Knightlife has just releases his second EP masterpiece titled “II” out on hip label Cutters which is a little moster and a half. You may all remember me posting the demo of “Crusader” a while ago (in 2007 ha!!!) but here is the real deal and I must say, I truely love cowbells!

Controversy: Music from the future, and classics from before time began - nu disco, party edits, future house, Balearic cool and heavy slung funk.

Flying Saucer Attack were formed in Bristol, England in 1992. David Pearce was the core member of the group, and Rachel Brook (of Movietone, another Bristol band) was a member for most of the band’s lifetime.
The band were marked by quiet vocals and sheets of feedback with similarities to contemporary shoegazing bands, or The Jesus and Mary Chain. FSA were able to create a small but enthusiastic fanbase as one of the more remarkable experimental rock bands of the day. The band were notable for recording most of their output at home into a normal home stereo system, avoiding recording studios as much as they could. This gave their music a DIY feel and gave them the freedom to experiment as much as they wanted. This track comes off their self titled album, and is one of the better blends of shoegaze and space rock, with less of a krautrock influence as the other tracks.

MP3: Flying Saucer Attack - My Dreaming Hill

Erlend Øye (Whitest Boy Alive) has really taken these guys under his wing. One listen and you’ll realise why.

MP3: The New Wine - Revolving Cylinder

The rest of these tracks are just a sample of some of the new stuff Ive been sifting through recently. Free Blood are great, bit of a mix between the dance-punk of !!! and Out Hud (being that they all share members). A Certain Ratio Ive been posting alot of recently and below is one of their newer tracks where they delve into more electronic territories. Ive also thrown in some new Decoder Ring (awesome track from an Australian staple), an old remix of probably My Bloody Valentine’s most danceable track and some Radio Dept. Enjoy.

New offerings from Relish in the form of Headman. The A side track Dreampieces comes with an edit from the ‘man’ himself and also receives a dark, murky re-rub from Japanese producer Zongamin.
On the flip is an equally impressive track with dominating vocal surges from Sydney’s Cassette Kids frontwoman Katrina Noorbergen. I highly recommend the C90’s remix - synthesizer fury that almost tops nine minutes in length.

Feast your ears on the entire release in 320 - [Junodownload]

Soul Jazz’s very own in-house electronic disco group Subway return with their first full length album since 2005’s ‘Empty Head’ set. The list of equipment used to fashion this album includes an enviable roll call of Roland Jupiter 6, Korg MS20, Univox SR55, Roland MKS80, and a Moog Prodigy alongside the usual guitars, drums and tape loops proving that these guys are a fully analog outfit. there’s no radical departure from their previous sound, sticking to what they do best with intuitive dancefloor jams and spacey head-music sounding like they could have come from any point between the late 70’s and today with elements of NYC avant-disco, Krautrock, German electronics, Radiophonic ephemera and proto house sculpted into a unique sound. The cover art also completely looks the part.

Nite Jewel is the performing moniker of Ramona Gonzalez and is the remarkable combination of Bronx pop and hazy experimental electronica. Like her ex-pop peers, Ariel Rosenberg and Geneva Jacuzzi, she records solely on portable 8-track cassette deck, often composing her songs by layered tape edits. This track was also featured on the new Milky Disco comp, ‘Let’s Go Freak Out’.

Just a glimpse at a few new additions to my crate over the past month….

New double sided release on Institubes for Renaissance Man out of France. A tribal-prog journey with a static vocal and prayer service sandwiched in the center. Also peep the Riva Starr remix for added jungle flava.

MP3: RENAISSANCE MAN - WHAT IS GURU?

Acid is far from over, and evident in this track from ‘87 complete with dualing 303’s and jazz piano hook.

MP3: TYREE - ACID OVER

Classic Chicago house circa 1988.

MP3: JAMIE PRINCIPLE - BABY WANTS TO RIDE (X-RATED MIX)

….Frankie Knuckles adds his flare to another camp Jamie Principle track that screams Chromeo. Beep beep.

MP3: FRANKIE KNUCKLES FEAT. JAMIE PRINCIPLE - BAD BOY

Rolling arpeggios dominate this last tune which can also be heard in the debut mixtape from local high fliers Flight Facilities. Keep watching the skies for this stealth act who are currently receiving huge praise from Aeroplane - and rightly so. It’s an aerial assault.

Michael sang the hook on this 80s hit by Rockwell. This track was also sampled by Sweet for a french-house savage beast - played by Daft Punk.

Tim Goldsworthy and Tim Sweeney (together make up T&T) brought out a killer revamped version of “Don’t Stop Til’ You Get Enough” late last year.
So of late Ive been getting really heavily back into old NY No Wave and experimental punk, and gone through pretty much every compilation I could dig up on the scene, but Im finding the tracks that have really been standing out for me are still the slightly poppier numbers. From a recent compilation that Rong Music put out called ‘Not Wave’ comes a new(ish) UK band called Circuits. The London four piece’s frantic, twitching, spiky guitar pop looks to the new wave sound of the late 70s and combines it with a distinctly modern twist. Im gonna say it sounds a little like Sting and the Police, but DONT let that put you off! Try it for yourself.

MP3: Circuits - Pistols At Dawn

Another band off that comp are Research, who I know absolutely nothing about, but give off that same punk-funk vibe as Liquid Liquid (creators of one of the best songs in the known universe, Optimo).

MP3: Research - East West Axis

I posted a track from the Japanese experimental/punk/psych/awesome band The Boredoms a few weeks ago, and since I still cant stop listening to the album, Vision Creation Newsun, heres another amazing number off that.

MP3: Boredoms - ↑

BONUS:
This is all over Gorilla VS Bear, but I do love the beat in this.

MP3: Animal Collective - Daily Routine (Phaseone Remix)

And judging from the lack of feedback, not enough of you jumped on this bouncy track, so try it again.

MP3: 6th Borough Project - Do It To The Max

Signed to that Aussie label, the Sydney based duo (formerly Perth) have just recently signed a deal with DFA too, due to release a 12″ in July. How to describe this track? Its got a touch of balearic, with a dark and low pulsating bassline, and a haunting horn creeping through the beat. This is definitely a dark, midnight club track but a very promising evolution from their last big track we featured on Waves, Apples & Pears.

The Pop Group was a post-punk band from Bristol, England whose dissonant sound spanned punk, free jazz, funk and dub reggae. Formed in 1978 by Mark Stewart (lyrics, vocals), John Waddington (guitar), Gareth Sager (guitar), Simon Underwood (bass) and Bruce Smith (drums, percussion), they issued their debut single, “She is Beyond Good and Evil” on Radar Records the following year.
Their debut album Y, was produced by reggae veteran Dennis Bovell to critical acclaim but low sales figures. Y is one of those classic albums, completely unlike anything else at the time, but does take a few listens to get hooked. Its not exactly the most instant album, but one of the most rewarding from the scene.
