The Emile Boutmy Scholarship 2010 - 2011

Sciences Po created the Emile Boutmy scholarship after the founder of Sciences Po (1871) in order to attract the very best international students from outside of the European Union. The Emile Boutmy Scholarship is awarded to top students whose profiles match the admissions priorities of Sciences Po and individual course requirements.

Eligibility:
Students from outside of the European Union who have been offered a place to study at undergraduate or Masters level are eligible.
This scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic credentials and whose profile matches that of their chosen course. Students’ financial situations are also taken into account when assessing their applications.

More discoveries in Tanzania: New Chameleon species and more Gold deposits

It is amazing how Tanzania's treasures continue to be discovered and exposed, mainly with foreigners (not that it's a bad thing) while her own people are either ignorant, as in not knowing how to scientifically report their own treasures, and for those few educated ones, I would really not be able to say anything on their behalf... it's a pity.

Well, once again the world got hit with pleasant news of discoveries.

Start with the kinyonga discovery
In one of the protected areas of Tanzania, the Magombera Forest (Lushoto, Tanga, Tanzania), a team of scientists have discovered a new species of Chameleon which they named Kinyonga magomberae (the Magombera chameleon). Dr Andrew Marshall, from the Environment Department at the University of York, first spotted the animal while surveying monkeys in the Magombera Forest when he disturbed a twig snake eating one. The specimen was collected, tested and compared to two others found by scientists in the same area and has now been named Kinyongia magomberae (the Magombera chameleon) in research published in the African Journal of Herpetology. Now, how many countless times you (Tanzanian) have came across this kinyonga? How many times has the 'mkulima' came across this kinyonga when going or working in their "shamba"s? I am pretty sure even many 'watalii's have come across this kinyonga, but they, just like us have failed to report them scientifically, reason being, the lengthy process one has to undergo to have it documented or ignorance (the former to the educated Tanzanian and the later to the Tanzanian majority).

Not so news new, except for the location, that could be new.
We sleep, wake and walk on gold until somebody comes with their equipment and shouts 'gold discovery!!' then declares, 'no more you mwananchi in here', sorry, we found you here but we don't want you here anymore. Pack and leave.

AllAfrica news reports that: Tanzania could become the biggest gold producing country in Africa following new discoveries of gold in the most unlikely areas of Lindi and Nachingwea districts in the south of the country. This will be the first gold mining venture (Mkuvia Gold Project) to be located in southern Tanzania. Most gold mining is happening in the Lake Victoria zone, Mbeya and Rukwa region, but the south wasn't until now regarded as a potentially gold bearing zone. Tanzania has become one of the fastest-emerging gold producers in Africa, and is now the continent's third-largest gold-producing country after South Africa and Ghana. Annual production of gold has increased from around 43.2 tonnes in 2002 to about 48.0 tonnes in 2003. Based on ongoing projects and developing mines, Tanzania's estimated gold reserves have been calculated at a conservative total that is in excess of 36 M oz (1000 t). Question?
Will it be different for us? Why and How? The histories in Ogoniland and Upper Delta (Nigeria), Katanga (Congo DRC), Angola, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast have me worried.
Not that I am being blunt skeptical about the whole thing, but really, why wouldn't I? All tht we are used of hearing is 'good promises', those 'empty words' from the 'greedy' in the name of business. Prove me otherwise then that 'mining is a cursed business'?. You may want to convince me of a number of aid given and taxes paid to aid government's budget, but could you cite to me exactly how the lives of the local people have improved before the beginning of mining construction and production?

Probably, you may argue that not drilling the mines, the common 'mwananchi' would still be floating in poverty, and I want to ask you, wouldn't it be just fine had they have not to worry about them being evicted from their ancestral land in order to give way to the 'greedy investors' who are the majority anyways. And where is the government in all this? just a standby? standing there like the 'rotten kings' ready to sell his own people for a short time luxury? Toothless and corrupt governments, who needs those? better not have one at all.

You may also argue that mining companies pay their dues as directed by the government, oh, you know that's a rotten bull's crap! Don't lie to yourself now.

Attacks on jail-broken iPhones are on the rise

A few days a go we published a post about a hacking tool that was developed and started attacking jail-broken iPhones. This week again news out there suggests that there has been another developed tool which targets and attacks vulnerable jail-broken iPhones. The most affected ones with this new tool are those which have SSH installed in them, also if the default password was not changed, this makes it even easier for the attack to propagae. So, this worm gains access to the vulnerable iPhone, changes the default password to something 'unmentionable', then spreads itself out or throws up a funny picture.

What kind of damage it does?
Well, just like the other one, the worlm steals your information and send it to servers somewhere and that's how crooks gets access to your personal data and start the stealing spree.

Those of you living in the USA will know the meaning of a 'black friday' and for deal seekers, it's a day to seta tent or recliner outside a store/shop, just to get a chance of being among the first to burst the doors, rush in and grab that particular item. Typically, on a 'Black Friday', some shops/stores set aside a fraction of their products to sell them in a huge discount of as low as 70% of the normal selling price.
