Paddle for Trees – We donate to ‘Stump Up For Trees’ with every half-day, full-day or multi-day bookings

After an unusual last 12 months, we can’t wait to get back out on the water with you and our customers, which we are hoping will be from 12^th April all being well.

Way2go Adventures’ love of the outdoors and the environment has proudly chosen to support a project called ‘Stump Up For Trees’ whose plan it is to plant 1 million trees across the Brecon Beacons.

To show our support, we pledge to donate 50p per participant on any of our half-day activities or multi activities and £1 per participant on our full-day activities booked.

Trees are of great benefit for our planet by helping to improve the soil, increasing water conservation, giving us oxygen, storing carbon, providing food and shelter for us as humans as well as for the diverse wildlife. Even dead trees can hold so much life in them and be used as a refuge for animals as well as materials for making tools, shelters and heat.

There are also huge benefits for our health and wellbeing by taking walks through our woodlands and forests to help reduce stress and anxiety.

Many of our trees are being affected by disease and deforestation so we need to act now to help ensure that our children and children’s children will be able to enjoy the trees and planet in the future.

It costs around £5 per tree to source, plant and maintain a tree for the first 12 years of its life, after which they should be able to fend for themselves, so it’s very achievable to make positive changes.

Thanks for your support during 2020. It’s greatly appreciated.

When we could, we took many clients on exciting adventures (safely and with social distancing), and below are some of our photos.

Hope you are staying safe and well as we go into Lockdown No 2.

Firstly, Di, Wayne and the Team at Way2Go Adventures would like to offer a very big thank you to everyone for your support from when we opened the middle of July for a very limited season. It’s reassuring and we’re thankful that you are continuing to book with us and it enables us to look forward to operating again in 2021.

Following the guidance and in-line with government rules and restrictions, sadly we will now be closed from Thursday 5^th November for activities until 2021. We don’t normally close at this time of year, but your safety is our priority so we have decided to close all activities until 2021.

GOOD NEWS – You can still purchase our Vouchers to use or give as Christmas presents ready for next year! Or if you’d like to discuss options for trips and staycations for 2021, please feel free to email or call us as we will still be replying to emails and answering the phone as normal.

Covid-19 Update: Now Open!

We have re-opened as the UK Coronavirus pandemic lockdown measures are eased off. Way2Go Adventures have looked at the whole business and how best to keep all staff and customers as well as the local community SAFE.

With our re-modelling we are following the advice and guidance from the UK Government as it is published. As we come out from lockdown and people are looking for the British beauty spots to get away from built-up areas, we are aware that it is still important to remain safe to prevent and limit further spread of the virus.

List of Measures

The measures Way2Go Adventures have put in place are:

Social Distancing – keeping at least 2 meters apart from people outside your household. The paddles you get given are a great way to measure if people are too close! Please keep at least one paddle distance apart from others.
We are an outdoor business and meet all our groups at the venue, so our safety briefs are always held outside (this is what we already do.)
Everyone will use hand sanitiser gel before handling any equipment that will be used on the activity at the venue. Ideally, people will bring their own supply of hand sanitiser (or soap and water if preferred), however, we will also have gel available for those who require it.
We ask everyone to use hand sanitiser gel before leaving as well. It will also be provided when asked for, for example during a break in the activity.
We will not be asking our customers to travel in our vehicles, so trips may be limited to a static location unless your group can organise a shuttle between you. This is for safety and to help minimise any risk of spreading Coronavirus. Way2Go Adventures will help with postcodes and directions to any location that is used.
If you are unfortunate and accidentally fall into the water during your activity session, your guide will assess whether it is possible for you to rescue yourself, or have someone from your group help you, talking you through what you need to do to get back onto dry land or back into your boat. Otherwise, your Way2Go Adventures guide will assist you with the rescue, which may include coming within 2 meters to safely help you out of the water. Water safety is extremely important to us and we will check that everyone in the group agrees to be rescued in necessary circumstances before setting off on the activity.
If you have tested positive for, had any symptoms of, or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 up to 14 days before your activity you will not be able to take part. Please let us know so that we can reschedule your activity. We also ask that you stay home or seek medical help if needed and please follow the current NHS guidelines NHS Symptom checker.
If you think you have any symptoms of Covid-19 within 14 days of taking part in one of our activities we do ask that you get in touch with us to let us know, and follow the NHS Symptom checker.
After every activity, we will wash and clean all used equipment with sterilising fluid and plenty of soap and water so it will be ready for the next use. We will also be rotating the use of our equipment. This includes:

Paddles

Buoyancy Aids

Helmets

Cags

Wetsuits

Spray Decks

Canoes/Kayaks/SUP’s

Pumps for the SUP’s

Ropes/straps

Van/trailer

Before loading the vans or trailers our staff will use hand sanitiser gel or wear gloves to help with keeping the kit clean and ready for you all.

NHS measures we are following are:

Please cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you need to cough or sneeze, NOT YOUR HANDS and put tissues in the bin immediately.
Wash your hands with soap and water, if soap and water are not available then please use hand sanitiser gel.
Do not touch your face if your hands are dirty.
Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
If you’re unwell and showing symptoms then please self-isolate.
Do not leave home if you or someone you live with has any of the following
a high temperature
a new, continuous cough
a loss of, or change to, your sense of smell or taste

Booking outdoor activities (Canoeing, Kayaking or Stand Up Paddleboarding):

Way2Go Adventures is back open to our customers in July, for pre-booked activities only. You will be able to book Canoeing, Kayaking or Stand Up Paddleboarding online, by email or by calling us for groups of up to 5 people. We are also limiting our trips and activities to single groups, i.e. we will NOT mix your group with another group of people. The allowed group sizes may change as we come further out of the UK lockdown restrictions and we will be keeping our advice up to date.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

Way2Go Adventures have been closely following the recent updates with COVID-19. This is a difficult time for everyone, with constantly changing advice and we want to wish you and your family the very best of health over the coming weeks and months.

We are following advice and guidance from the UK Government as it is published, as we are all aware this is changing on a daily basis. However, we are still OPEN, and intend to stay open to allow people to enjoy the outdoors with us.

We want to reassure all of our customers that we are taking every precaution to keep our staff and guests safe.

We are proud to operate at the highest possible standards of safety and hygiene. Our equipment is thoroughly cleaned after every trip. We will continue to clean all equipment with sterilising fluid and plenty of soap and water.

We take out small groups, which gives you plenty of guidance from our friendly staff. We plan to ensure we will not mix groups with other groups or families whilst we work through this global virus outbreak.

We are an outdoors business. We meet, greet and conduct our safety briefings outside at the venue. We will not be asking customers to travel in our business vehicles, so trips may be limited to a static location, unless your group can organise a shuttle between you.

If you feel unwell or have symptoms outlined by the NHS, please follow current advice and look after yourselves. Unfortunately you will not be able to join us at this time. Check NHS.uk/coronavirus for information about the virus and how to protect yourself.

We are a small family business with costs to cover. We will be just as affected by this pandemic as all of you. If you have already booked an activity with us, and you do not want to attend, please think about rescheduling or we can offer you a Voucher to use in the future. Thank you.

The World Health Organisation has advised people to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including exercising outdoors. We can recommend this at any time of year!

Monmouth to Chepstow

Way2Go Adventures offers guided Gilpin 2021 Tours With A Modern Twist and here are some of our Option 3 and Option 4 tour highlights. Vouchers are available for these trips too.

Options 1 and 2 of the Gilpin tour begins in Ross-on-Wye and passes more places of interest that Gilpin would have seen. For those details and booking, please also read our blog, Gilpin 2021 Tour Highlights: Options 1 and 2 – Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth.

Options 3 and 4 of the Gilpin tours begin in Monmouth and travel towards Chepstow. From here, the River Wye joins the River Severn and becomes tidal from Bigsweir bridge.

All of our guided canoeing tours are led by a qualified and knowledgeable guide who will advise you on your paddling technique to ensure you have a safe, fun and enjoyable time. They will also highlight points of interest as you meander down the river and enjoy Gilpin’s Wye Tour journey.

Gilpin 2021 Tour Highlights

Brockweir

One of the unusual and unexpected Gilpin 2021 tour highlights is Brockweir. Brockweir was once the site of a boat-building industry. The small village marks the point where the cargo that was brought in from the sea was transferred to smaller barges to continue the journey upstream into shallower waters.

Some of the remains of the boat industry can still be seen including the cast iron road bridge, which is designated as a grade II listed building, the Manor House and the Moravian Chapel.

Tintern Abbey

The ruins of the spectacular Tintern Abbey are visible from the River Wye and it was an exquisite delight on the original Wye Tours and is certainly one of the main Gilpin tour highlights.

It was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks and the site was completed in the 14^th century. It was finally dissolved in 1537 as part of King Henry VIII’s policy to assert control over the churches and religion.

Tintern Abbey has inspired many artists and writers including William Wordsworth.

Chepstow

Chepstow is a market town with a long history dating from prehistoric times. It is the place where the Wye forms a natural border between Wales and England.

Another of the amazing Gilpin 2021 tour highlights happens when you paddle alongside Chepstow Castle walls on the River Wye. There has been a castle here since Norman times. Standing high on the limestone cliffs, it was the first castle in Britain to be built of stone.

It is worth visiting the castle and the museum if you have time while in the area.

Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth

Due to Covid 19, we are now celebrating it in 2021. To celebrate Gilpin 2020, Way2Go Adventures offers guided tours with a modern-day twist and here are some of the Gilpin tour highlights.

To follow Gilpin’s original Wye Tour journey, our tours will take you by canoe through the Wye Valley, down the River Wye and ending up at the River Severn.

Each tour begins in Ross-on-Wye and you’ll paddle and canoe past the places of interest that Gilpin would have seen on his Wye Tour. Below are some of the Gilpin tour highlights and places of interest on both the original Gilpin Wye Tour and our Gilpin 2021 tour.

Ross-on-Wye

Ross-on-Wye is situated in south Herefordshire, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is described as the gateway to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. There has been a quaint town on this site since medieval times.

This is a popular area for canoeing and other water sports having first been brought to the attention of adventure seekers in the 18^th century with the establishment of the Gilpin Wye Tour. It is now recognised as the birthplace of British tourism.

Castles

The River Wye flows along the border between Wales and England. As a result, the valley has a turbulent past of conflict over land and territory. Strong fortifications were necessary to provide protection and defence against invading armies.

A visit to Goodrich Castle is available as an optional extra for the one-day Gilpin tour. This 12^th century Keep is made of sandstone and surrounded by a deep, dry moat. Now owned by English Heritage, there is an exhibition including historical artifacts, a tea room and a gift shop.

Symonds Yat

One of our Gilpin tour highlights is Symonds Yat. Symonds Yat is a small, picturesque village along the route on day two of our modern Gilpin tours. Over time, the Wye has carved a deep gorge through the limestone rocks resulting in the spectacular Coldwell Rocks and Symonds Yat Rapids. Symonds Yat Rock can be clearly seen as you canoe past. This is the perfect area for thrill-seekers to explore.

Monmouth

Monmouth is located where the River Monnow meets the River Wye. Day two of our Gilpin tours ends here. It is only a 10-minute walk from the river into the town to see the places of interest including the Monnow Gate and Bridge, the only medieval river bridge in Britain with a gate tower still intact.

The Gilpin Wye Tour – How it all began

We are organising a Gilpin Wye Tour to mark the 250th anniversary of William Gilpin’s historic visit to the Wye Valley.

The original Wye Tour, a two-day boat trip from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow, is regarded as being the excursion that started British tourism.

The tour’s popularity was enhanced by Gilpin, who wrote ‘Observations on the River Wye’. This is widely recognised as Britain’s first guide book. It became a bestseller following its publication in 1782.

The Wye Tour

The story of the Gilpin Wye Tour begins in the 18th century. Reverend John Egerton, Rector of Ross, entertained his visiting friends by taking them on boat trips along the river.

These proved to be so popular that news of the beautiful Wye Valley soon spread.

Commercial boat owners saw the potential and started organising excursions and boat trips for members of the public. This inevitably led to demand for hotels and restaurants. And so the ‘package’ tour was born.

The picturesque Wye Valley attracted artists and writers, including Coleridge, Wordsworth and Turner, who enjoyed the sense of escapism, the tranquillity and the opportunities to be inspired and creative.

Many also followed the route on foot to allow time to fully appreciate the beauty of the scenery.

Highlights

The Gilpin Wye Tour included many highlights such as Tintern Abbey, Symonds Yat, The Kymin and Piercefield, as well as several castles such as Goodrich Castle and Chepstow Castle. The traveller is immersed in a picturesque landscape and surrounded by wonderful wildlife as the route journeys along the River Wye; one of Britain’s prettiest rivers.

The Wye Valley is now a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is highly regarded for its significance in landscape quality and for ecological, historical and cultural importance.

Due to Covid 19, our Gilpin 2020 tours will now be in 2021 and will mark the 250^th anniversary of William Gilpin’s historic visit to the Wye Valley which established the area’s reputation as the birthplace of British tourism.

To celebrate this historic milestone, Way2Go Adventures will be authentically re-creating his famous ‘Wye Tour’ by offering guided Gilpin 2021 tours with a modern-day twist.

Our complete Gilpin 2021 tour (option 3) recreates the original Wye Tour from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow and enables you to paddle in a canoe through 3 counties (Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire) and 2 countries (England and Wales).

The original Wye Tour was a two-day boat trip from Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow. Visitors travelled aboard trows, the river transport of the day. These cargo boats were designed to transport goods but commercial owners soon saw the potential for tourist excursions following the success of Gilpin’s guide book, ‘Observations on the River Wye’.

These days, the transport of choice is the canoe which allows time to appreciate the stunning Wye Valley landscape whilst adding an element of adventure. Way2Go Adventures is offering four exciting new tour options to celebrate Gilpin 2021.

Re-create Gilpin’s ‘Wye Tour’ by canoe with Way2Go Adventures

Canoeing offers an easy, peaceful and relaxing way to experience the Gilpin Wye Tour. Meandering through the Wye Valley which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), floating on the River Wye, spotting the local wildlife and getting back in touch with nature is by far the best way to spend time, let alone following in the footsteps of the historic Gilpin.

A qualified and knowledgeable local guide is included in the cost of all four options. The guide will advise you on your paddling technique to ensure you have a safe, fun and enjoyable time. They will also point out the many places of interest that Gilpin would have seen.

A packed lunch is included for each of the days.

For these Gilpin 2021 tours, no previous experience is required.

Option 1 – One-Day Guided Gilpin Tour

Beginning at the viewpoint in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, before walking down to the canoes on the River Wye, this one-day guided Gilpin tour passes two castles as well as Wilton Bridge and Kerne Bridge. Option 2 – Two-Day Guided Gilpin Tour

Option 2 includes everything from option 1.

The second day will start where the one-day Gilpin tour ends, continuing down the beautiful River Wye to Monmouth. The highlights include Coldwell Rocks and the Symonds Yat rapids, which in Gilpin’s day was a heavily industrialised area. The remains of the furnaces are still there and can be clearly seen. Option 3 – Three-Day Guided Gilpin Tour (the complete Wye Tour)

Option 3 includes everything from option 2. It enables you to authentically re-create the whole of Gilpin’s ‘Wye Tour’.

Day three of this Gilpin 2021 tour begins in Monmouth. This is where the River Wye meets the River Severn and becomes tidal from Bigsweir bridge so there will be some variation in start times. We will continue to paddle down the river to reach Chepstow, passing Brockweir and Chepstow Castle. Weather depending, we aim to continue under the old Severn Bridge to see the cliffs. Option 4 – One Day Gilpin Tour

Option 4 is purely the second part of option 3 as a one-day experience; starting at Monmouth and canoeing down to Chepstow and out under the Severn Bridge to see the cliffs.
