By MARK P. MILLS AND JULIO M. OTTINO

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203471004577140413041646048.html?mod=WSJ_hp_MIDDLTopStories

In January 1912, the United States emerged from a two-year recession. Nineteen more followed—along with a century of phenomenal economic growth. Americans in real terms are 700% wealthier today.

In hindsight it seems obvious that emerging technologies circa 1912—electrification, telephony, the dawn of the automobile age, the invention of stainless steel and the radio amplifier—would foster such growth. Yet even knowledgeable contemporary observers failed to grasp their transformational power.

In January 2012, we sit again on the cusp of three grand technological transformations with the potential to rival that of the past century. All find their epicenters in America: big data, smart manufacturing and the wireless revolution.

Information technology has entered a big-data era. Processing power and data storage are virtually free. A hand-held device, the iPhone, has computing power that shames the 1970s-era IBM mainframe. The Internet is evolving into the “cloud”—a network of thousands of data centers any one of which makes a 1990 supercomputer look antediluvian. From social media to medical revolutions anchored in metadata analyses, wherein astronomical feats of data crunching enable heretofore unimaginable services and businesses, we are on the cusp of unimaginable new markets.

The second transformation? Smart manufacturing. This is the first structural shift since Henry Ford launched the economic power of “mass production.” While we see evidence already in automation and information systems applied to supply-chain management, we are just entering an era where the very fabrication of physical things is revolutionized by emerging materials science. Engineers will soon design and build from the molecular level, optimizing features and even creating new materials, radically improving quality and reducing waste.

Devices and products are already appearing based on computationally engineered materials that literally did not exist a few years ago: novel metal alloys, graphene instead of silicon transistors (graphene and carbon enable a radically new class of electronic and structural materials), and meta-materials that possess properties not possible in nature; e.g., rendering an object invisible—speculation about which received understandable recent publicity.

This era of new materials will be economically explosive when combined with 3-D printing, also known as direct-digital manufacturing—literally “printing” parts and devices using computational power, lasers and basic powdered metals and plastics. Already emerging are printed parts for high-value applications like patient-specific implants for hip joints or teeth, or lighter and stronger aircraft parts. Then one day, the Holy Grail: “desktop” printing of entire final products from wheels to even washing machines.

The era of near-perfect computational design and production will unleash as big a change in how we make things as the agricultural revolution did in how we grew things. And it will be defined by high talent not cheap labor.

Finally, there is the unfolding communications revolution where soon most humans on the planet will be connected wirelessly. Never before have a billion people—soon billions more—been able to communicate, socialize and trade in real time.

The implications of the radical collapse in the cost of wireless connectivity are as big as those following the dawn of telegraphy/telephony. Coupled with the cloud, the wireless world provides cheap connectivity, information and processing power to nearly everyone, everywhere. This introduces both rapid change—e.g., the Arab Spring—and great opportunity. Again, both the launch and epicenter of this technology reside in America.

Few deny that technology fuels economic growth as well as both social and lifestyle progress, the latter largely seen in health and environmental metrics. But consider three features that most define America, and that are essential for unleashing the promises of technological change: our youthful demographics, dynamic culture and diverse educational system.

First, demographics. By 2020, America will be younger than both China and the euro zone, if the latter still exists. Youth brings more than a base of workers and taxpayers; it brings the ineluctable energy that propels everything. Amplified and leavened by the experience of their elders, youth and economic scale (the U.S. is still the world’s largest economy) are not to be underestimated, especially in the context of the other two great forces: our culture and educational system.

The American culture is particularly suited to times of tumult and challenge. Culture cannot be changed or copied overnight; it is a feature of a people that has, to use a physics term, high inertia. Ours is distinguished by incontrovertibly powerful features, namely open-mindedness, risk-taking, hard work, playfulness, and, critical for nascent new ideas, a healthy dose of anti-establishment thinking. Where else could an Apple or a Steve Jobs have emerged?

Then there’s our educational system, often criticized as inadequate to global challenges. But American higher education eludes simple statistical measures since its most salient features are flexibility and diversity of educational philosophies, curricula and the professoriate. There is a dizzying range of approaches in American universities and colleges. Good. One size definitely does not fit all for students or the future.

We should also remember that more than half of the world’s top 100 universities remain in America, a fact underscored by soaring foreign enrollments. Yes, other nations have fine universities, and many more will emerge over time. But again the epicenter remains here.

What should our politicians do to help usher in this new era of entrepreneurial growth? Liquid financial markets, sensible tax and immigration policy, and balanced regulations will allow the next boom to flourish. But the essential fuel is innovation. The promise resides in the tectonic technological shifts under way.

America’s success isn’t preordained. But the technological innovations circa 2012 are profound. They will engender sweeping changes to our society and our economy. All the forces are in place. It’s just a matter of when.

Once again the establishment is showing it’s cards in an obvious attempt to defraud Ron Paul of the nomination, as Iowa GOP ‘officials’ purposely disrupt and permanently invalidate the 2012 Iowa Caucus.

The official Caucus website, in conjunction with the Des Moines Register, had to come forward Thursday to claim the official results can “never be certified” after, at least, 8 different precincts turn up invalid results due to “missing votes” and changing stories.

For the first time in history, the Iowa GOP decided to change the final vote count to a “Secret location” for what was claimed to be “security concerns.” The unprecedented change in venue came as a shock to most Iowans who are used to seeing the final results tallied at State Party Headquarters in Des Moines, in full view of the public.

Here is a little viral video going around about the deep gratitude the Japanese have for all the assistance they received from people all over the world. In spite of the damage people in Japan are already working hard to rebuild with a strong sense of hope for the future. Japan has a long history of disasters including two atomic bombs and the fire bombing of every major city in Japan. A little earthquake and Tsunami are not going to knock down the Japanese spirit of ‘gambare!’. There is still lots of hardship and pain and the nuclear situation is not going away. Still, we know that what does not kill you makes you stronger! The Japanese are going to be moving to a new level after this and become a leader in new energy technologies as no one in the world will ever again be able to convince them nuclear power is ‘safe’. Of course the government will continue to push its own agenda against the will of the people. This too will pass as the Japanese regain power over their own lives.

Bruce Cockburn has put out about 34 albums since the 1970s. He is a genius musician and poet and once banned from the U.S. for challenging the IMF and their unfortunate policies. The U.S. government did not appreciate it in those days. Thankfully, people have grown up and also learned that what he was saying in his songs were true, as painful as it is to hear. Now, Ron Paul, a libertarian, is running for president with much the same views. How times have changed and how wonderful to people waking up and becoming conscious of what is really going on in this world.

Bruce Cockburn’s lyrics are romantic, political, spiritual, deep, and illumating, full of joy and pain all intertwined. Amazing stuff and always fresh and different.

The Fukushima radiation blowout is, as predicted, an unresolved world disaster. Essentially, it is the most major population disaster the world has ever faced. The radiation in Tokyo has levels higher than inside the Chernobyl exclusion (evacuation) zone. In other words, there are 35 million people in Tokyo and they are all living in a zone that should have been evacuated according to the Russian approach. Radiation 100 km (60 miles) from Fukushima, of Cesium 137 concentration in air filters in vehicles in Tokyo is more than 1000 times higher in terms of their concentration than at the peak of the weapons testing in 1963 with a whole slew of radioactive isotopes coming out including radioactive I-131, Cesium 137, Sulfur 35. In short, not only is Japan exposed to serious levels of radionuclides, but the whole earth is becoming contaminated. This is not a short-term problem. It is up to about 10,000 years worth of contamination. In a simple way, what we’re looking at is the potential structural breakdown and vulnerability of all nuclear plants around the world. It is a world wide consideration that needs to be addressed, not just at Fukushima.

We know there was an Earthquake recently in Virginia. Twelve nuclear plants in Virginia all the way to Michigan were temporarily shut down. The only country that seems to take this nuclear power plant issue seriously is Germany, which has a plan to shut down all its nuclear plants down within the next ten years. The external gamma radiation has been so high from the nuclear plant radiation in Fukushima the counter literally went off the scale. The famous physicist Busby told Japanese people radioactive air contamination is now 300 times higher than Chernobyl and 1000x higher than atomic bomb peak in 1963. It is an unfortunate no-brainer to understand that Fukushima disaster will ultimately cause millions, perhaps hundreds of millions deaths. In 25 years after Chernobyl, one million died directly of that exposure. This increased deaths from Fukushima are happening all over the world and will include the United States and Canada—not just the West Coast. Dr. Ganett Sherman, a physician and acknowledged expert in radiation exposure has reported in North East United States a spike in 35% increase in baby deaths since Fukushima in the area.

This is in alignment with Chernobyl patterns. This disastrous result that we’re talking about may result in a significant world depopulation. According to Helen Caldicott, MD, one of the world experts on radiation, WHO has been subservient to the nuclear industry since May 28, 1959 when at the world health assembly, WHO drafted an agreement with international atomic energy agency IAEA granting the right of prior approval over any research it may undertake under IAEA. These people are supposedly neutral watch dogs, but she points out that WHO is in defacto an advocate for nuclear power industries. Gunderson noted that over 1000 REMS were released according to TEPCO (Japanese system), an amount that if there were direct exposure would mean death within a couple of days. These kinds of exposures result in a significant neurological breakdown and it’s really sad. The research on children in Japan, studied over 1500 kids showed approximately 46 had radioactive iodine in their thyroids since Fukushima.

We understand for children that their sensitivity and sickness rates are about 10x greater than those for adults. In the midst of this nuclear plant disaster, President Obama instead of allocating money to the solar industry which he’s canceled, he allocated59 billion dollars to US nuclear power industry. This is an industry that human rights defender Dr. Helen Caldicott has called “nuclear insanity” and “destroyer of the worlds.” I am deeply concerned that the President has sold out explicitly to nuclear regulatory agencies as a source of power, rather than looking to solar, wind and fuel cells, which are safe and effective sources of power.

Every major empire has gone through a seven stage life cycle which you can track by the state of its currency.
Stages:

1. Good money – a country always starts out with gold or money backed by gold.

2. Social programs – as the nation develops economically and social it takes on more economic burdens, adding more work projects and social programs.

3. Military spending – the economic affluence rises and so does its economic influence and it increases its expenses to fund a massive military.

4. War – a nation puts its military to use and its expenditures explode.

5. Fiat currency – to fund the war the nation starts to steal the wealth of its people by replacing their money with a currency that can be created in unlimited quantities (fiat currency – back by nothing!)

6. Inflation – the wealth transfer that is caused by this currency supply is felt by the population as severe price inflation triggering a lost in faith of the currency.

7. Wealth transfer – an inmass movement out of the currency and precious metals and other tangible assets takes place. The currency collapses and massive wealth is transferred to those who had enough foresight to position their money in the right asset class before hand.
