This graphic notation (visually influenced by George Crumb’s scores, but not conceptually, alas) indicates the way that part of the interaction around a single episode of Lost plays out. This indicates a full circle of US release to UK release, via Bittorrent/iTunes distribution etc. This is merely the interaction I’ve witnessed; there will be much more than this. Moreover, this applies only to broadcast and online distribution; not DVD releases, spin-offs etc. Every ‘circle’ is simplified i.e. it doesn’t indicate distribution in other territories, other languages; it doesn’t track media appearances by actors, creators etc.; it doesn’t indicate merchandise or traditional marketing activities etc.

Read clockwise from the top; the inner circle indicates coordinated activity by Lost’s creators (the production, the network etc.), with outer circles indicating stimulated second-order ripples in increasingly uncontrolled spaces. This would be for the aforementioned episode 13, so reading from the middle out: activity at Amazon.com; official sites (inc. fakes); broadcast releases (inc. Bittorrent/iTunes); media responses (inc. ‘Television Without Pity’ thumbnail sketches and then recaps and then forum discussion, as well as magazine articles etc); Lostpedia; blogs etc. (inc. forums). Density and clustering equals weight and significance of event and response. I’ve picked out the relationship between the episode and the Amazon book.

In conjunction with the relaunch of their website, CNN asked me to examine their web statistics and create a visual record of the site’s last 13 years. We were both interested in telling a larger story about the growth of the Internet and the public’s changing media habits through the lens of such an influential and heavily trafficked site.

The process started by determining what metrics might hold an interesting narrative, and which ones were available over the entire lifespan of the site. CNN was able to provide me with daily page views, the top 20 days for each year and the most popular pages on those days. I was also provided with monthly category views and lists of the nations visiting the site.

The spike chart of average weekly page views forms the centerpiece of the chart. The busiest 10 weeks are called out, and the events associated with the week are highlighted below the x-axis… along with other events of cultural significance or large week-over-week gains. I also tracked the absolute and relative growth of their site categories over time, and highlighted several unique metrics at the top of the chart, including the busiest and slowest days of the year, and the number of countries that visit the site (192 at last count). Finally, to put everything in context, I found milestones in the history of the Internet for each year which I placed along the bottom of the chart to create context for the narrative.

Ultimately, I think the most fascinating story here is the change in our news habits after September 11, 2001. After this day, a new and higher baseline for visits to the site is established, and the inference is that this event really established CNN.com and the greater Internet as a reliable, timely and indispensable source for news.

What If… is a new exhibition at the Science Gallery in Dublin that investigates the future of technology “in the space between reality and the impossible and where designers meet scientists to explore the future.” This exhibition has been curated by Anthony Dunne, Fiona Raby and Science Gallery director Michael John Gorman and features imaginative and propositional work from a group of designers who are reimagining our future.

Below, RCA graduate Sascha Pohflepp talks about “The Golden Institute,” an alternate history project stemming from the idea that Jimmy Carter was re-elected and focused more of our national efforts on the development of alternative energy sources, such as lightning harvesting. Sounds far-fetched…but maybe not much more so than Yury Luzhkov’s recent (and real) proposal to ban snow in Moscow.

There are pictures all over Flickr, but the best way to explore this exhibition online is through the Science Gallery’s website, where all the propositions have been thoroughly written up.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Dublin, this show will remain open through December 13th, so don’t miss it!

Prof. Lax breaks it down:

Seven states cross the 50% mark overall as of our current estimates, but the generation gap is huge. If policy were set by state-by-state majorities of those 65 or older, none would allow same-sex marriage. If policy were set by those under 30, only 12 states would not allow-same-sex marriage.
