Jesus is ______

Who do you think Jesus is?
Who do you say Jesus is? Who do people you know think he is? Jesus has been said to be a huge number of things.
Is he: alive? just one religion among many? pro life? anti-gay? a narcissist?
How about this: is Jesus beyond fiction?

Gospel for the Gong is holding an event to help you find out
---------------
Is Jesus Beyond Fiction?
28 October 2012, 7pm
Hope Theatre (Building 40), University of Wollongong
Simon Manchester (Senior Minister, St Thomas Anglican Church North Sydney) will be speaking from Mark 12:18-27 on the topic, "Is Jesus Beyond Fiction?".
---------------
All are welcome to join us. Please contact us for any further information, and tell us who you think Jesus is in the comments below!

---------------

(What's all this "Jesus Is..." business?
On Sunday 7 October, more than 300 Wollongong Christians united to spell out the phrase “Jesus Is _____.” on the beach at North Wollongong, next to the newly refurbished Bathers’ Pavillion. We were launching the new Australian “Jesus Is _____.” website (http://www.jesus-is.org.au). We gathered from 5 churches and 2 university Christian ministries, from the very young to the very old, from many different backgrounds. We are asking our community into a conversation regarding Jesus’ identiy: What goes in the blank?) [source: jesus-is.org.au]

G4G Event: "Jesus Is" Beach sign and picnic

SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2012
12.30PM

The G4G team has organised an aerial photograph of a human "Jesus Is" sign on North Beach. All churches will be participating. With 10m high letters, 300-350 people are needed for a good sign. So your help is needed!
Where: North Beach, in front of the palm trees. There will be signs marking where to go.
What to wear: A 'Jesus Is' t-shirt or a navy/black top. Bring a beach towel.
Picnic: BYO Picnic. This will be held on the beach or at Stuart Park.
UPDATE
Due to a challenging weather forecast the picnic has been cancelled. But the sign will go ahead!!!
Please pray for clear weather, that an appropriate amount of people will show and that this event will stimulate discussion about Jesus in the GONG.

Women's Katoomba Convention 2012

FUELLED BY DESIRE

Earlier this month several of our ladies attended the yearly Women's Katoomba Convention. It was a great weekend away of fellowship with other Christian women and hearing from God's word. Here is an overview of the talks:

Make God your ally – face the sin in your life. We don't know what tomorrow will bring but we do know that God desires to bless all of us, no matter what we have done; any sin small or large, or how we feel. This desire is unquenched and shows grace and unreserved kindness

We cannot enter heaven on our own merit, we need forgiveness and purification. God desires that we are thankful. God desires acceptable worship with reverence and awe.

God made us creatures of desire – to desire him and to enjoy his good blessings

Being chosen by God is a fantastic joy and honour - Set your hope completely on the grace to be given us, Be holy in all you do for God is holy. Conduct yourselves in fear. Love one another earnestly from the heart. Live in harmony with one another

Psalm 73:25-28 "Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart….it is good to be near God..my refuge". The state of our heart rules our behaviour. What controls our affections? Discover our ruling affections by working out what in our life we would hate to lose. This will indicate what idols we have attached to our life.

'Let not our longing slay the appetite for our living’. We will always have unfulfilled longings this side of heaven –we don‟t always get what we desire. The deepest longing of our hearts cannot be filled by any created person or thing, but desire for our creator is intended to shape all other desires.

African Dinner Night

25th August, 6pm at the church
Over the years our church family has helped and supported refugee families from different parts of the World. Currently it is our privilege and joy to have the Afangbedzi and Follybebe families with us from Africa - Togo. Not many of us know what life in Togo is like. Not many of us know what life in a Refugee Camp is like. So to help us HG 10 is organising an African Evening with the help of the Afangbedzi family. We will eat African food the African way (get your fingers ready) and we will learn about life in a Refugee Camp and hope to raise money to help children in the Krisan Refugee Camp. Please come along it should be a great evening!

CRCA Catalyst

crcacatalyst.com
A new denominational magazine is here! CRCA Catalyst is the new online publication for the Christian Reformed Church of Australia.
Download the latest issue here

What's in the first issue?

read about new churches

learn how ministry share really works

find out about new workgroups that will help local churches

hear the voice of a church planter who learned some hard lessons

understand more about the CRCA Special Appeal Collection on (or about) August 19

How to engage with CRCA Catalyst

Source: David Groenenboom (edited)

This is an electronic publication. while there is still an ‘issue’ every quarter it will only be printed off for people without internet access. Typically, this will happen at the local church level. If you know someone without email who’d like a copy, you can always print one off for them.

You will interact with CRCA Catalyst differently. There is a live blog and comments are always open. You can comment on the issue as a whole, or you can comment on each article as it is published. Anyone can make a comment, and anyone can comment on someone else’s comment

There is a FaceBook community. People who are FaceBook users can interact here as well. They can ‘like’ articles, leave comments, and share posts. Make the most of these facilities, and build the discussion.

There is also a Twitter feed @CRCACatalyst This is helpful for those who use Twitter. It also provides a great way for Twitter users to contribute and/or share Catalyst posts with others.

There is a Blog. This is where the new issues are released, where separate articles are uploaded, where comments are made by readers. Comments are the equivalent of ‘Letters to the Editor’. The good thing is that people can comment on other people’s comments.

Make sure you make the most of this useful new resource!

What happened at KYCK 2012?

On the 27-19th April, our youth group along with youth from other Christian Reformed churches in the state combined to travel up the mountain to Katoomba for KCC’s annual youth convention, KYCK. Below some of the young men and women who went along reflect on the weekend:

“We had six talks over the three days that our youth group was at KYCK: Trinity, Justification, Regeneration, Adoption, Sanctification and Glorification. The two different speakers explained to us what each one meant as well as giving a good talk about it. The talks were engaging and interesting, with good real life examples in them. I went to KYCK expecting it to be something like a normal youth camp. It was nothing like I expected. The music and songs were excellent, and everyone listened to what people had to say about KYCK in their point of view. It was amazing to spend a whole weekend just focusing on God and what we can do in our lives to be better Christians and live our whole life for Christ.”

Madeleine W.

“Friday afternoon we left the warmth of Wollongong and headed to freezing Katoomba where we would attend KYCK alongside other Reformed youth groups of New South Wales. We managed to set up camp in the dark before racing off to Katoomba Christian Convention centre for our first session.

I could feel the adrenaline pumping as we approached the door. From inside I could hear a wave of people cheering, screaming in excitement. I had never been to KYCK before and had no idea what lay ahead. Peaking through the window I saw bright, colourful lights flashing down on a sea of at least 1000 teens gathered from all over the state, all different church denominations, to worship and learn about
the Lord. I was buzzing. We headed in where we were introduced to the speakers, sang some upbeat songs and had our first talk.

Saturday involved two more sessions in the morning with morning tea in between, and an evening session after a sausage sizzle dinner. Food breaks were good not just for filling empty stomachs, but mingling with other teens, and refining our 'pegging' skills (fastening pegs to another person’s clothing, hair etc without them noticing)! It was encouraging to be in an environment with a mass number of people around
our own age, knowing they were all brothers and sisters in the Lord. Both speakers, Malcolm Gill and Sam Chan, were very easy to listen to because they were simple to understand and very entertaining. What was taught about the trinity, justification, regeneration, adoption, sanctification and glorification was thoroughly absorbed because of their amazing abilities to preach to young people.

Saturday afternoon was an opportunity for Reformed youth groups to mull over the talks in small groups, go to a seminar held at the convention centre, or hike up a mountain, play in the park, or lounge in the sun. It was a very enjoyable time of fellowship.
Sunday lunch in the car park of a local cinema signaled that KYCK 2012 was over. It was time for us to say our final goodbyes to the other Reformies. It was sad to leave behind our friends and fun, but exciting to go out in into the real world being so sure of where we want to be when our time comes to leave the Earth, and encourage everyone else who doesn't know or believe to join us in that majestic place!”

Jessica L

“Not much to say except that I had a great time listening to Sam Chang and Malcolm Gill (both from SMBC), share their wisdom and anecdotes. It was an awesome time of reading and understanding God's word and how he has saved us through Jesus. Plus it was a great time of fellowship with tones of other Christians from around the state. I would definitely recommend it to others and am looking forward to it next year.”
