The Weekly Weasel -- Week of May 20

{jcomments on}Here's the latest news from the Weasels.

What a Difference a Week Makes
Two Wednesdays ago, Ted "Cake" Phillips squandered a board-leading Russian position by writing a club record seven misorders and also earned himself his less-than-flattering nickname for bringing a Strawberry Shortcake notebook to the game. It was a tough night. Fortunately for Ted, with the Weasels, one doesn't have to wait long for a shot at redemption. That shot came a week later at the Red Lion, and this time, Cake had his cake and ate it, too. Check out the game report.

{jcomments on}We played our 11th game in the inaugural Bar Room Brawl Series Wednesday at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square, and we had another change in the top seven. Check out the Brawl standings. At the end of the season, the top seven finishers, regardless of membership status, will be invited to participate in a championship game at the Red Lion. Each player's best three bar games will count for score.

{jcomments on}It's easier for a baseball player to deal with failure than it is for, say, a football player. The baseball player can redeem himself the next night. The football player must wait at least a week for his chance.

Similarly, one of the nice things about playing Dip with the Windy City Weasels is you usually don't have to wait long to wash away the taste of a bad game. Such was the case on Wednesday night at the Red Lion, where the Weasels gathered to play our 20th game of the season and our 213th overall. Just one week after writing a whopping seven misorders as Russia in Game No. 212, Ted "Cake" Phillips guided England to a share of the board top.

{jcomments on}I'm short on time, so this will be brief. Alex Amann, the Connecticut Yankee now living in the Bay Area, has been a dues-paying Weasel for two years now. Last night, he finally played in a one of our league games.

In town for the ScavHunt at the University of Chicago, Amann had a free night on Wednesday and asked me to organize a game in his honor. I did. And the son of a bitch paid me back by running the Central Powers System in my family room.

Game No. 212 ended by time limit after the Fall 1906 turn in the following center counts:

{jcomments on}Sam Bassett (pictured) spent much of his Spring 1901 negotiation time hatching an exotic opening* as Russia in last night's Game No. 211 at the Red Lion in Lincoln Square. In this particular opening--which Bassett has played before with the Weasels to varying degrees of success--Russia works with the Turk to quickly pressure the Austrian while also beefing up her Scandinavian presence. The Spring 1901 moves are:

Peter McNamara (the Australian) wins CODCon VII!

{jcomments on}Peter McNamara, the native of Perth in West Australia (not to be confused with our own Pete McNamara) prevailed in this weekend's tournament at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.

Peter had the result all but sewn up after soloing as Austria in the first round. Our own Tony Prokes won two Best Country awards with strong play in both rounds on Saturday, offered to sit out on Sunday, and took second. Russ Dennis, playing in his first game with our club and his first FtF tournament, surged into third place with a strong result in Sunday's game.

Here are the final scores:

{jcomments on}Moot: n a deliberative assembly primarily for the administration of justice.

Weasel: vb to escape from or evade a situation or obligation. n 1: small carnivorous mammal that is able to prey on animals larger than itself. n 2: cunning Diplomacy player indigenous to the Chicago area.

The hobby's best-named tournament is back for a seventh installment, and this time, we'll be back in the suburbs!

{jcomments on}Our club had a banner year in 2012. In addition to hosting the World Diplomacy Championships in August, we enjoyed the following accomplishments:

35 house games

our minor tournament, CODCon, was another success

another fun time at Weasel Pyle 7 in Wayne

our club championship event, the Weasel Royale, with an undercard game

our 200th game on December 18!
