Jason Wu has gotten my first stamp of approval with his new line that debuted this Friday in New York. Since Madam Obama wore to the presidential inaugural ball in 2008, he has shot up in popularity. He has taken that popularity and a little Chinese funk, and created a line like no other. Enjoy!

Don't let the plaited braids fool you, A$AP is the epitome of Hood Luxury. In his recently released video, "Wassup" Mr. Pretty Flacko brings a little Harlem swag to foreign high-fashion. He is spotted sporting high-end brands from Y-3 to Versace, and it was only a matter of time before we'd catch him in a Givenchy Rottweiler print, considering his apparent affection for Rottweilers.

I especially appreciate A$AP Fashion because it showcases personal luxury. Fashion is a bi-product of Worldy Inspiration. Take inspiration from your environment, and make your own fashion. You ARE what you wear, not speaking of name brands and expensive clothes, but considering the fact that what you put on your body tells the world what you're about. I forsee A$AP Rocky being a serious Fashion Icon in the near future, as long as his music keeps up.

Black History: The Shades of Beauty

The Issue of Colorism.

In times of slavery, those that were of lighter skin complexion were awarded with better treatment and lifestyle due to their greater resemblance to the Europeans.

Today, in 2012, women who have lighter skin, are the object of beauty solely because of their skin tone. Black celebrities and role models are put on magazine covers with a photoshopped masks of fairer skin. Slurs like, "She's pretty for a dark skinned girl" are thrown around, sadly, by people of our own race. We are force-fed the idea those only those of lighter skin are beautiful. On TV, the prominent black characters we see are mostly light skinned, and there are even instances where a dark skinned character is replaced with a lighter skinned character. We are given daily dosages of subliminal messaging telling us that what we were born with is not enough, or up to par. We cannot spend our lives trying to live up to media-influenced notions of beauty.

How can we expect the world to appreciate us in all the tones and shades that we come in, if we cannot appreciate ourselves? Why should a young girl feel like she is ugly because she is dark-skinned or has kinky hair?

Young Hollywood Reigns

Who says kids can't be on the best dressed list? 2011 was all about how Hollywood's youngest stars proved to be fashions finest representatives. I have to say in some cases, I was more impressed with Hollywood's youth more than their respective elders. Young stars that have caught my eye include Haley Steinfeld, Elle Fanning (Dakota's little sister), the Smith siblings (Jayden and Willow) and of course the oh-so chic Suri Cruise.

Haley Stienfeld stunned all in her sophisticated demure as the 2011 face of Miu Miu while Elle Fanning stepped out of her sisters shadow sporting the latest couture. The Smiths consistently shock all as they show out on the red carpet in their signature unique and wild ensembles that perfectly exhibit their personalities.

These youngsters prove that one can NEVER be too young to rock Chanel or Prada.

Fun Fact: Siri Cruise's wardrobe is worth over $2.5 million!
Sadly, I'm jealous of a three year-old.

I finally got my hands on a House of Paradise "We Not Choosin" Crewneck!

The neon colored print and nonchalant, "too cool for school" saying is what got me hooked. My head and my pride for my school doubled in size when I found out that the creator of this line was a Howard student, and even better LIVED ON MY FLOOR!

Chris Brown: The World's WORST DRESSED

CAUTION: There may be a small amount of pre-existing bias in this article.

LOL! Wow, despite my personal unflattering feelings for this emotional, violent, and rash celebrity, I actually felt bad for Mr. Brown. The Good men at GQ UK ripped-up Chris Brown senselessly with their slideshow of C-Breezy Fashion accompanied with some interesting commentary. I couldn't help but laugh, and just anticipate Chris Brown's response.

Let's be real, the man has a 12" cuff in his jeans ._.

While there are people, especially some of the "best rapper[s] alive" (Yes, that was a shot at Sir Tunechi), out there who are very worthy of the hefty title. Chris Brown has made many, many violations and doesn't seem like he plans on stopping anytime soon which is my idea on the reasoning behind why he has received this title.

The witty repertoire of ruthless captions by the GQ fashion officials had me on the floor!

"At the 'Grammy Jam' celebration of Stevie Wonder. At least Stevie was spared seeing that cavernous monstrosity of a jacket."

Top-Notch Tuesday | 1.31.12

The good weather brought everybody out of their dorms and onto the Yard (including us)! With D.C. getting as cold as it does, when we get a 63 degree forecast we see that as an opportunity to shine. The fashion, weather, and the genuine happiness out today was overwhelming. Laughs were shared amongst friends and spring pieces got a little debut. Appreciate these days and these times. In fact, appreciate EVERY and EVERY moment because it's never guaranteed... Enjoy.

Jewels For Days

I was recently browsing through one of my fav blogs songofstyle.blogspot.com and saw how the owner ALWAYS has stacks of amazing funky bracelets and watches that clashed in a fantastic manner. Every outfit that she sports is topped off with perfectly mismatched wrist décor. We normally see the common trend of stacked bangles, but this fashionista paired all kinds of bracelets that show an edgy/chic/bohemian look. (Which we know is my obsession.)

Since I was so inspired, I decided to create my own twist! Here's how to master this new fab trend!

Find a variety of unique bracelets/watches/rings. Some that you would initially not expect to go together I even used an earring!
Polish your look. Nails are accessories too and often complete outfits. Find a basic nail color to paint the majority of your nails and then pick a funky or opposing color to make your mani pop.
Pick a cool bag that brings out the craziness that you've displayed on your arm. Generally a basic nude or black bag will enhance the features of your wrist décor.
Don't be afraid to be daring! The cool thing about this trend is that the more you add the more eclectic it will look.

And I just happened to have the camera on me, it was like a match made in heaven... but in the end it was just another Fashionable Friday at Howard University.

Golden Globes 2012

Ahh awards season! My favorite time of the year. There's nothing I love more than illustrious Marchesa ball gowns and the Louboutins that grace the red carpet. The Golden Globes kicked off the season with a surprising presentation of gowns. I was a little disappointed at a majority of the gowns however, the ones I loved were straight knockouts.

Not to be bias, but the ladies in nude killed it. Charlize Theron dominated with this modern Grecian-esque Dior ensemble. And the headband? A PERFECT touch. Elle McPherson presented a quirky avant-garde Zac Posen gown, with impecable fabric details. Kate Beckinsale literally brought tears to my eyes in her lavishly detailed Cavalli with the perfect jewelry to match. To say the least it was a masterpiece.

Hands down, Kate Beckinsale won the prize for most effortless elegance.

No joke, This line was madness. I was sincerely trying to contain myself while clicking through the pictures from this line, and sadly, I failed. I also made an attempt at sticking to my 6 picture rule, but, again, you can see I failed. The Turtleneck x Tuxedo combo towards the end of the collection was one for the books! With this fall spread, Ferragamo has reached a list of personal favorites with me. I'm not too sure what more I can say... When something this good comes along you have to let it speak for itself.

COACHELLA: The Best of Boho

It's times like this that truly make me wish I was home! In California, spring time is all about Coachella. Coachella is an extremely popular indie music festival in April featuring hundreds of indie artists and a few mainstream headliners such as Kanye, Jay-Z and Adele.

Coachella isn't only about the amazing music, but also about the INCREDIBLE fashion. Gorgeous weather and good music inspire all fans to sport flowy lace dresses, floppy hats, fringed tanks, topped off with the signature messy hair of course.

To sum it up, Coachella is the land of the boho chic. What is boho chic you may ask? Think Vannessa Hudgens meets Nicole Richie meets 70's hippie goddess on a hot summer day. So ladies don't worry about brushing your hair, just bring your high waisted shredded shorts and oversized sunglasses for a stellar weekend with Cali's best dressed.

Some of this years artists include The Weeknd, Snoop Dogg/Dr. Dre, and Bon Iver.
P.S. Coachella is FILLED with all of the hottest celebs such as Chanel Iman, Rihanna and Nicole Richie so be on how they fabulously present themselves.

Alexander McQueen: Spring 2012

Pattern mixing is buzzing all over the fashion world, and to stay true to the McQueen label boundaries MUST be crossed! This new line made me giddy with joy, partly because it was simply a dope collection and the other part being because his style and finesse with art and fashion are still alive, even in death. Scrolling through the bold patterns topping one another was an instant day-maker. Fashion and style are more than clothes, they are a language. From each designer and each collection there is a message that is to be understood, and Alexander McQueen's can be summarized in three words: PUSH THE ENVELOPE! McQueen, forever!

I have been so inspired by other students at Howard to be more bold with my style, however I will always stay true to my Cali spirit.

First Day of School!

Well while it's not technically the first day of school, It is the first day of second semester, which is almost as exciting. Everybody returned from the break looking refreshed and eager to take on the semester. At any school a new semester means a new year, new grades, and new classes. At Howard a new semester also means new hair, new clothes, new gadgets, and a whole new grind to that almighty 4.0.

2012 is a year of Expansion!
So, I'd like to take this moment full of new things and use it to introduce a new contributor to this blog. I'm very excited about this collaboration and hope that it'll bring a new perspective for our followers.

Ryan Gosling's Best Looks of 2011

This was the year of the Gosling, and he backed up his spout of fame and success with coinciding style. Ryan was a man of color! He shook up the scene by hitting a black-tie event in a blue Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo and also took his turn in a cool green number by Gucci. He made another appearance in Gucci wearing a shimmering black and white plaid suit from the Spring 2012 collection. He was also a man of detail... (peep the socks under the Ferragamo). The Future is BRIGHT

This spring is your chance to be bright and bold! Neon colors graced the stages, and streets, of New York Fashion Week this fall, and were a big hit causing a blinding stir in fashion community! Shoes with colored soles where the talk and walk of the town, and the bright suits and parkas demanded attention, like bike reflectors in headlights. If your not quite brave enough to walk the streets in an orange suit, like Brad Goreski, start small. Try switching the laces on your favorite shoes, be it a pair of boots or oxfords, with a nice neon colored lace. (see example) That'll give you enough pop to stand out in a crowd full of blacks (I'm talking laces).

Funny enough, the pictures above are from Jil Sander's Spring 2011, not 2012, that's what you call "Ahead of the game."

The process of learning and adopting the beliefs, values, and behaviors of roles that one anticipates taking on in the future.

A major key to success is knowing what it is that you want to be successful in. This speech has been heard by us all a billion times over, "Make Goals!"

But I'm hoping to add a little something that we may not hear quite as much. As you make your goals, look at someone's success and aim higher. Many of us look at the magazines and media and say, "I'm gonna be the next ." or "I'm going to be just like __." But what are you doing to make that happen? Find PLAUSIBLE role models and emulate them. Don't look at the super model who sat at home and got discovered the first step she took outside simply because the chances of that happening are slim. Take a look at the success stories that were created through hard work and monumental moves. Read up on their stories, and try to make parallel moves. You must first realize the difference between Imitation and Inspiration. Don't creepily make attempts at reliving the life of your role model, but look at their road to success and take notes, and keep those notes in-mind as you make your own moves.
