Happy Anniversary!

How time flies so fast! From the beginning I started working out and planning to set up a blog and it shown great success. Without you guys, nothing is impossible for achieving this!

From traveling all over the Philippines: from Luzon, Visayas to Mindanao. Travel by air, land and sea. Visiting sights and seeings across the country makes me inspire of creating a travel blog and sharing my experiences to all.

Cebu's Taboan Market: More Than Just a Dried Fish

After our lunch at Zubuchon, we went back to Sampaguita Suites at downtown area for check-in and took a little rest before we headed back to another "laag" moments in the Queen City of South. Our group were frequent visitors of Cebu City and we enjoyed visiting this place. After few hours of freshen up, we hit the city once again.

Our next stop was the famous Taboan Market. We hailed a jeepney (signed 15F) just across Magellans Cross and took 10-15 minute drive to the destination. Had a little walk and immediately reached the place. It is one of the places in Cebu where you will buy your pasalubong. The place is famous for selling dried fish or danggit. Make sure you know the haggle skills and they will give you discount. :)

Once you arrived to Taboan Market, you immediately smell the dried fishes which makes more intriguing. I have been to this place for several times and I love going back because of atmosphere and great place to buy pasalubong back home. :)

Prices vary on different type of dried fish and of course, it depends on the season. During our trip, prices range from PHP400 to PHP600 depending on class and types. Several dried fishes to choose from: aside from danggit, there were squid, fish tapa, dilis (anchovies), fish tocino and many more. By the way, I also bought dried squid which costed me PHP600 per kilo and had to divide it per 1/4 kilo. Good thing that packaging was free and they sealed it plastic.

Not only dried fishes sold here, Taboan Market is a one stop pasalubong center where they also sell Cebu's products and delicacies. So it is a great place of doing your shopping and prices were almost the same or even lower than in other pasalubong shops and supermarkets. Just go inside and you will find different products such as the favorite dried mangoes, mango puree, otap (Cebu biscuits), Cebu chorizo (sausages), Carcar Chicharon (pork cracklings) and many more.

Money well spent when you are in Taboan Market. You can buy everything here especially your pasalubong back home. It is a one stop center selling great Cebu products at affordable price. make sure to include this in your itinerary when visiting Cebu. Great place and it's more than just a dried fish! :)

Tip: Bring extra clothes because the smell of dried fish will stick to your dress. But nevertheless, it's an experience to be there and more fun! ;)

How to get there?

via commute - the best way is to ride a jeepney. From Cebu downtown area (Magellans Cross), look for route sign going to Taboan or Tabo-an. Fare only costs PHP7.50.

Taxi cabs also available across the city. All drivers know that place. Flag down starts at PHP40 and fare usually did not reach PHP100 depending on traffic.

We were hungry after our city downtown walk. We hailed a taxi and went straight to General Maxilom Avenue, nearer Fuente Osmena Circle. A visit to Cebu is incomplete without tasting the world famous lechon or roast suckling pig. Actually it's our second visit to this restaurant and we know how tasteful is their best selling product, LECHON! :)

"Best Pig Ever!" by Chef Anthony Bourdain

Zubuchon became famous when it was featured in television not only locally but also internationally. Chef Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations featured lechon and easily ranked it as one of the best tasting pork in the world. No wonder that people flocked here in Cebu to taste the best of the best! :)

Waiting time for the food took 5-10 minutes. We ordered a kilo of Boneless Zubuchon and divided it into two plates, a bowl of Shrimp Sinigang, bowl of Monggo with Zubuchon and endless number of rice cups. Our drinks were a mixture of sodas, fruit shake and their famous "Iba" or Kamias Shake which ideal since we eat lechon so it will decrease the greasiness of your intake. Our dessert was Banana Turon with Dulce de Leche.

Our meal was made in heaven. I love their zubuchon especially the crispiness and juiciness of it. A kilo costs PHP530 and it's all worth it. Shrimp Sinigang was also good. Not overpowering the sourness and the shrimp was fine. Monggo was also good, not salty and creamy. Iba shake was divine. I love the drink. And for the dessert, it was so good to end your meal. :)

Overall lunch experience was great and we were full thanks to the wonderful food that served on Zubuchon. Great food and ambiance inside. Zubuchon has many branches in Cebu and in Mango Branch was huge and great dining experience whether in groups, families, couples or even soloist.

Revisiting Downtown Cebu City

This is my greeting after we landed in the Queen City of the South. It was a "Good Morning Cebu" as we headed to Sampaguita Hotel near downtown Cebu City. It was a long one hour travel from the airport to the downtown. Our check in time was supposed to be at 1PM but I told the staff to leave our bags at the counter while waiting for us to checked in. After that, we walked a short distance to our primary destinations.

Revisiting Cebu City is not boring and it makes me more excited since I finally see them once again. Going to downtown Cebu makes me happy it celebrates history and faith for as I am a Catholic person. Our hotel was a short distance to the tourist destination so a short walk was just fine. We finally reached Magellan's Cross and we were so happy to be back and immediately grabbed our cameras to take photos after photos.

To those familiar, infront of Magellan's Cross is the Cebu City Hall. It was also one tourist destination so we also took photos and appreciate its architectural design.

A walk on the right side of Magellan's Cross is Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. This is a sacred place especially to devotees of Santo Nino. Even there were many people, it remained peaceful. We offered candles and say a little prayer. We also went inside the church to pray and went inside and outside the church. By the way, this place where the famous Sinulog Festival celebrated and performed here.

We went to another church which was also a short distance from the Basilica. It was Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. This is also where the new saint, San Pedro Calungsod was located. The cathedral was also the seat of Archdiocese of Cebu. It was bigger than Basilica del Santo Nino.

It was a short fine walk at downtown city. Good thing that the weather was relatively fine as we visited these areas and revisited it once more. It was a great time until we were hungry. We looked for a taxi and proceed to our next destination... and this time, it's food trip time! :)

Cebu Pacific Flight Review: MNL to CEB, November 2012

We've been to Cebu for several times and still excited on visiting once again. Due to promo fares for the past months, we availed Cebu Pacific low fares and immediately booked to Cebu. We arrived at NAIA Terminal 3 at 5AM since our flight was 6:25AM. We were group of 5 and we met at our office in Sampaloc, Manila and availed taxi for PHP250 or PHP50 each. Travel time was breeze since it was midnight then.

NAIA Terminal 3 is the largest airport of the country. Since Cebu Pacific operates internationally and domestically, we went there. We also waited two members in order for us to do the check-in. We entered to the terminal and there were many passengers lining up. Actually for Cebu Pacific, they separate International and Domestic Check-in counters and staff assisted the passengers so it ended smoothly. One staff informed us to proceed to other check-in counter since our flight time was early.

Since we moved to another counter for check-in, our seating assignments were provided and we were not in same row. So a tip will be arrive to the airport 2 hours before the flight or have a seats reserved at airline website for a fee. Good thing that current flight includes the PHP200 terminal fee so it won't be a hassle lining up just like before.

We went to second floor to have some breakfast. Good thing that there were shops and restaurants opened early in the morning. We had our breakfast at Jollibee. We had our walk at the terminal until our flight was announced that it was ready for boarding. We immediately went to the final security check-in and we were surprised that shoes or sandals were not taken off which it was a part of security check before. So the final check ended smoothly. After that, we went to the designated gate.

After clearing up our boarding passes, we went down as we thought it will proceed to the gate tube but we went down the stairs and to the tarmac onboard the aircraft. According to them, it was the usual practice of Cebu Pacific but I enjoyed it as I wanted to take some photos at the tarmac with the aircraft.

It was a full flight but the good thing was boarding time was smooth and fast. I was seated in 25C (Charlie) since my friend Gina asked to exchange seats from B (Bravo) to C (Charlie). So, I was seated at the aisle. After few minutes, cabin crew checked if baggage were stored properly and they started to do the flight safety demonstration. We supposed to depart at 6:45AM but due to traffic congestion at NAIA runway, we departed at 7:00AM. We used the shorter runway (13/23) instead of the usual longer runway (6/24).

Welcome to Cebu!

Overall, it was a pleasant flight from Cebu Pacific. From check-in, to boarding, to flight and up to the arrival. It was also observed that we didn't use gate tube even though NAIA and Cebu airport has a facility. But nevertheless, it was a great flight and I was able to take some shots of the aircraft. Flight crew were also attentive and greeted us from the moment we went inside the aircraft until deplaning. Short delay was OK since it was a runway congestion at Manila. It was a great and fun flight with Cebu Pacific. :)

Alluring Pampanga: Taste Kapampangan Dishes at Everybody's Cafe

My trip to Pampanga was fruitful because I went to three towns and cities exploring different sites particularly churches. It was 6PM and felt hungry. Good thing I was in San Fernando City and I rode a pedicab and I went to a famous restaurant in the city, Everybody's Cafe.

Having featured in many articles of newspapers and magazines and showcased on television shows and programs, this place was considered a site of visit in Pampanga. Being said and done, the interior looks like a typical Filipino cafeteria where food choices were displayed in a counter and all you have to do is to choose and ordered meals.

Since I went by myself, I ordered two dishes, Pindang Damulag (Carabao Tapa) and Betute (Stuffed Frog). They also served Bulalo soup which I love the broth. The Carabao tapa tastes so good and I dipped it in vinegar. The stuffed frog tastes like chicken. I love the crunchiness too.

Price ranges from PHP50 to PHP200. It was affordable and yet the food was yummy and authentic because of the exotic ingredients. It was a great food trip experience. Also, I went to their cafeteria taking some snaps such as the pasalubong shop and some articles posted on the wall featuring the cafe.

Alluring Pampanga: Time to Visit San Fernando City

My travel to Pampanga is not complete without passing the capital city, San Fernando. It was one of the important place in Pampanga and have visited some of the places within the city. Having arrived from Bacolor, I was also excited in visiting this place.

This place is not only the capital city of Pampanga but also the regional center of Central Luzon (Region III). It was also named Christmas Capital of the Philippines due to the celebration of Giant Lantern Festival which was held every December. The city has also rich in history and several famous names and heroes came from this city such as Jose Abad Santos, former Chief Justice and featured in 1000 Philippine peso bill. It has also rich in economy which was served as agricultural processing center of Central Luzon. No wonder, several establishments put up business here and became flourished.

I rode a jeepney and arrived to the downtown area. I was amazed the beauty of the historical district. Unfortunately, heavy rain poured and I wasn't able to explore other areas. The first one I noticed was the Metropolitan Cathedral which dominated the downtown district.

The cathedral was built in 1755 and initially made up of wood and completed in 1808. It is a seat of Archdiocese of San Fernando (Pampanga). It was rebuilt several times mainly due to fire. It was elevated to a cathedral in 1948.

It was such a great visit and was able to hear mass as well. It was raining hard and I wasn't able to visit other places along historical district such as Lazatin and Consunji old houses and it was past 5:30PM since museums had only until 5PM for visit. But it was a nice short visit to the city capital. By the way, I was also hungry and headed for a dinner, the unusual way...

Alluring Pampanga: Travel to Bacolor & The Sunken Church

After visiting Betis Church in Guagua, Pampanga, I rode a jeepney and traveled to a nearby town of Bacolor. It was a 10 minute ride and as I arrived to this town, history caught my mind about Bacolor.

This town was famous due to the Lahar incident of Mount Pinatubo which erupted last 1991. The lahar or the mud flow in which a mixture pyroclastic material from volcanic deposits and water and flowed down to the river. The Lahar incident happened last September 1995 or four years after the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo. Bacolor was half buried by 6 meters and many lives were perished including houses and structures.

The famous San Guillermo Church was also not spared in devastation. It was also known as Bacolor Church, one of the oldest church not only in Pampanga but also in the Philippines. It was constructed by Augustinian friars in 1576. It was one of the grandest church with several liturgical services, from baptismal to funeral and every day masses. The church was half buried and people tried to recover some religious items including the retablo or the altar and some statues of saints.

I felt the nostalgic because what was left the upper half of the church and still managed to recover it. After 16 to 17 years of the lahar incident, it stood the test of time. I was really amazed on the church facade and there was a written in Latin on it which reads Rex Regum et Dominus Dominorum which translates King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I entered the door which formally a window and I immediately saw that the church was half buried.

The retablo was relocated in a spacious dome so it would fit. I felt the eagerness of checking each location of the church and commended the people of restoring the beauty of their church. Like also what I did every time I visit the church, I bowed my head, knelt and prayed.

To the right side of church was the Museo de Bacolor which showcased the history of the church and how it managed the restoration from the devastating lahar that almost ruined the town including the church. It also featured the adoration chapel that need to pass an arch. Several saints placed here and also the famous status of the Risen Lord which was featured in television hit May Bukas Pa which was shot and filmed here. Santino (Zaijan Jaranilla) was the main character.

It was a rewarding experience especially you visit Bacolor Church. I was happy because of the Bayanihan (brotherhood/sisterhood) spirit of the people here in the town for the restoration of the church. Many loss their homes, livelihood/business or even relatives but their faith remained. It was such unfortunate that it happened but they never stop believing and continuing their faith to God. A nice visit and learning moment if you will visit this place. :)

Before I left Bacolor, I bought some pasalubong and purely delicacies. There were tamales or a rice grind with salted egg wrapped in banana leaves, suman or rice cake cooked in coconut milk wrapped in coco leaves, espasol or rice pounded with nuts and some toasted breads.

How to get there?

via car / van - from Gapan-Olongapo Road, there was a marker at the road to the left (if you came from Manila via San Fernando City) that indicate a way to Bacolor town. Drive along the way and you will reach the town in 10 minutes and you will automatically saw San Guillermo Church.

via commute - from Gapan-Olongapo road, tell to the driver to drop you off to the road that will lead to Bacolor. Once you arrive, ride a tricycle and inform the driver to drop you off to San Guillermo Church. Tricycle fare will range from PHP20 to PHP30. Another one is a jeepney ride from San Fernando City proper (sign San Fernando-Bacolor-Guagua) and inform the driver to drop you off to Bacolor Public Market. One of my itineraries in visiting Guagua was the Betis Church. It was featured in several travel shows and in magazines so I was interested because of the Philippine version of Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It was located at Betis, one of the sectoral areas in Guagua. The name of the church was Santiago Apostol (St. James the Apostle) Parish Church.

Built in 1660, it was a Spanish-era church in which construction was made primarily on wooden materials. But fire broke out for several times until finally the church was built on concrete materials in 1770. I was amazed about the beauty of the church and it stood the test of time. Little I knew that this church was one of National Treasure declared by the National Museum of the Philippines. I was invited by one of staff to come inside and see the country's version of Sistine Chapel. I knew that it was featured for several times but for me it was my first. As I entered the church, I was truly astonished. It was magnificent view as I looked to the ceiling. These are murals and paintings of the Holy Family, some biblical scenes, Catholic saints and more. It was comparable to the Sistine Chapel at Vatican City. I immediately took some pictures and I also warned by the staff not to use flash on it.

The retablo or the main altar was greatly carved with some ornaments. Once you get closer to the altar, you feel the sanctity of the place. It was such an honor to visit and amazed the talent of the people of Betis that it was greatly made.

On the left side of the church is the Museo ning Betis (Betis Museum) which showcased the history of Betis and the church. It was a simple museum and according to one of the staff that this place was under renovation to improve the look of the museum. It was free but donations were accepted for the improvement of the museum.

It's such a pleasure to visit Betis and I love the church, both exterior and interior. It was a salute to the people of Betis for such as wonderful creation and work of art. It also makes me proud because there was a design of paintings and murals in the Philippines as comparable to Europe particularly Sistine Chapel of Vatican. It was a worth visit to Betis Church and make sure to include this in your itinerary. :)

How to get there?

via car / van - once you reach the town of Guagua, drive along road that passes San Nicolas and along the way, you will easily find Betis Church since it was just along the road. Travel time from Guagua town proper to Betis is only 10 minutes.

via commute - ride a jeepney from Guagua town proper (Guagua-Bacolor-San Fernando) and tell the driver to drop you off to Betis Church. Fare costs PHP8 only.

Alluring Pampanga: Lunch @ The Original Razon's Guagua

It was a hot afternoon and I felt so hungry since I didn't took breakfast in Metro Manila. After my tour around Guagua town proper, I wanted to have a lunch initially at the famous fast food. But hey, I remembered that Guagua is famous for Razon's Halo-Halo so I immediately asked the locals on where was the first branch of Razon's located. Since all the locals were familiar to this location, they showed directions on how to get there.

I arrived to this place after 10 minutes of walking. The place was a simple restaurant as compared to other branches in Metro Manila. As I entered, there were two crew members and one of them gave me the menu lists and I was surprised because of their price was lower compared to other branches.

I ordered Halo-Halo, Pancit Palabok and Toasted Bread with Butter. I can't imagine that Halo-Halo's price was only PHP60 as compared to PHP95 in other branches. They explained to me that all Razon's branches are franchised so definitely their prices started to increase. Since I was at the Original Razon's their prices were the lowest. After 10 minutes, my lunch was served. :)

Lunch was great and Pancit Palabok was yummy and the sauce was creamy. Noodles were perfectly fine. Toasted bread was a great match. For Halo-Halo, it was wonderful. I love the simplicity of ingredients and the leche flan on top was heaven! I love the banana which was not too sweet including the macapuno. It was a great dining experience here at the Original Razon's. If you are going to Guagua, Pampanga, make sure you drop by to this place. :)

Alluring Pampanga: Getting To Know Guagua

It was a boring Saturday at my house here in Quezon City and off from work. I only spent my time infront of computer playing games and searching internet until one time, I decided to have a day tour. Since Metro Manila has many provinces nearby, I searched for the places that I have been once or never been there from the start. Pampanga came to my mind since I need also to explore the other towns since it has rich in cultures and places of interest. I packed my things including my ever reliable camera. I rode Bataan Transit and went to Guagua, Pampanga. I passed NLEX and Gapan-Olongapo road and after two hours, I reached Guagua.

Guagua is a first class municipality and 77 kilometers north of Metro Manila. It also belongs to Second District of Pampanga. This town was also damaged during the eruption of world renowned Mount Pinatubo. But Guagua stood up and regained it and become one of the best performing towns in Pampanga. By the way, I rode a jeepney since the town proper was not in the National Highway so I paid PHP8 fare in order to reach the town proper which was only 10 minutes from the Gapan-Olongapo road. The town proper was simple as I expected. But there were several establishments which makes the town progressive.

The town was quiet as compared to other cities such as San Fernando (capital) and Angeles but their population was huge, one of the highest in the province. Along my stroll, there were many structures built during Spanish and American era. Among them were the following:

1. Immaculate Concepcion Parish

Built in 1590

It was one of the oldest structures built in Guagua. It was also rebuilt for several years due to fire. The simplicity of the structure and what was more interesting was the inside of the church. It may be looked like a cathedral but this place drawn tourists who were interested to this site.

2. Rufino Cardinal Santos Catholic Center

Neo-Classical Building

Adjacent to the church was this building who looked like a City or Provincial Capitol in some provinces such as Ilocos Norte and Negros Occidental that I've been to. This place was the office building of the church.

3. Aurelio Tolentino Monument

Located beside the Municipal Building, Aurelio Tolentino was born in Guagua and he was one of the revolutionary hero. He was also a playwright and one of the members of Katipunan. He died in 1915 and buried in Manila North Cemetery but in 1921, his remains were transferred to this monument.

4. Guagua Municipal Building

It was built last 1937 and until now this building was a seat of government of Guagua where Mayor and Vice Mayor took their office. The structure was simple the good thing was it retained the structure.

There were other places I visited at Guagua. I will post it on separate blog. It was an interesting trip to this town and I was hungry by that time. So I went to look for a place that was proudly Guagua and already spread out across the country.

How to get there:

Via private vehicle - From Metro Manila, headed to North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and exit at San Fernando. Drive along Gapan-Olongapo Road and turn left once your reach Mary the Queen College. Drive along and you will reach Guagua downtown. Travel time is 1.5 hours.

Via commute - From Metro Manila, ride a bus bound for Bataan, Olongapo and Zambales that passes along Gapan-Olongapo Road. Tell to the bus conductor or driver to drop you off to the intersection to Guagua. Fare ranges from PHP80 to PHP100. Once you arrive, ride a jeepney (Guagua-Porac) to go to the town proper. Fare costs PHP8. Travel time is only 2 hours.

It's my third and last day here at Ilocos Norte. But before I went back to Manila, I had my 2-hour pasalubong break and bought some items. Some pasalubong were bought few days ago and I do last minute shopping today. So what were these items I bought?

I headed to Laoag City Public Market and bought garlic and lasona or what we call small onions. Both are widely popular here in Ilocos Norte and sold at very low price compared to Manila and other nearby provinces. I bought 2 kilos of garlic for only 80 pesos per kilo and lasona for 60 pesos per kilo. It was a great deal. :)

After I bought these, I went back to Isabel Suites, short rest and have my breakfast before I went to Partas Bus Terminal. I also bought dragon fruit which was also popular here in Ilocos Norte. It was a nice stay at Isabel Suites and they were helpful in giving directions while I was in the city.

I hailed a tricycle and driver knew exactly the bus terminal because Partas was popular here. In few minutes, I arrived to the terminal and I paid PHP20 since I have 2 baggage so it's affordable. Partas Bus Terminal here in Laoag is huge. There were several trips to Manila (Cubao & Pasay) and Baguio cities. These were scheduled trips. I went at the ticket booth to check the available trips to Manila and I availed the Pasay-bound trip at 10AM.

I paid PHP701 and gave me the ticket. Busy left on time. I amazed on my road travel since I saw the different places in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. I came to Laoag via airplane (Philippine Airlines) and I appreciated the beauty of the province. After two hours, we arrived at Vigan City, Ilocos Sur and took our first stop over. I went down to have my break and bought Marsha's Royal Bibingka (rice cakes) which was popular here in Ilocos Sur. I wasn't able to tour around Vigan City but it will be on my itinerary lists in the future travels. :)

After few minutes, we left Vigan City since they carried some passengers. We passed the famous Quirino Bridge and I was amazed the structure along the Abra River, we passed to the newest bridge because the first one was not passable due to the condition after the storm that hit the province. After few minutes, the bus driver and conductor took their break. I also went down and took some photos along the sea shore.

Weather was perfectly fine at Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. We passed different towns and cities but when we reached La Union, heavy rain poured in. There were no reported any storm or typhoon but it was monsoon rains but it was very heavy especially when we reached Pangasinan and Tarlac.

Due to heavy rain, from the usual 9 hour bus travel it went up to 13 hours and I arrived at Partas Bus Terminal in Cubao Quezon City at 11PM. It was a tiring bus travel but I enjoyed my vacation in Ilocos Norte. It was fun, entertaining and learned at the same time. It was one of my successful solo trip.

P.S. The following day, classes and office were suspended due to Monsoon Rain which locally called Habagat.

Finding Mustache

After my night stroll to the Provincial Capitol, I decided to have to explore some establishments since I'm in the second day in Laoag City. I appreciated the lights the glowed to the capitol and on my way, I saw La Tabacalera which was the newest hang-out place here in the city. I was interested so I went there and explore.

I found out that this place was right beside Museo Ilocos which I went there during my first day. A little walk from the side of the museum automatically see the place. It was mixture of bars, restaurants and shops. La Tabacalera was also made of bricks and iron similar to the Museo Ilocos which added to the visiting places in Laoag. During that time, I needed to relax after my two days tour in Ilocos Norte. I immediately saw a mustache and I was so interested to check this place since I also found this in the internet, Finally, I went and arrived at Johnny Moon Cafe.

This place served Ilocano dining experience. I have been to different restaurants across Laoag City and I was intrigued on the name of this place. Who is Johnny Moon? After searching for the clue and hints, I saw this big picture and explained the meaning. :)

Who is he? He is Johnny Moon! :)

The name derived from hero Juan Luna who was born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte which was 25-30 kilometers south of Laoag. He was famous because of his paintings such as The Spolarium which won a prize in Spain and you will see that at National Museum in Manila. By the way, Juan Luna = Johnny Moon. Now you know! :)

This place was cozy and I also liked the interior which makes me feel relaxed. I immediately seated since it was not full and the crew handed over their menu. I want to chill out since I already eaten my dinner but some of my friends recommended to try their specialty such as Crispy Dinuguan and Bagnet. I checked out the list and I was interested to Bagnet Empanada so I called the waiter and I ordered it and checked out the drinks, I also intrigued with the name Una Chula (from Juan Luna's artwork), so I ordered it. I tried to be more fusion with my Ilocano meals so I give myself a try. While waiting for my meals, I grabbed my camera and take some shots.

So here's my meal, Bagnet Empanada. I find it double crunchy because of the crunchiness of the empanada and also the texture of the bagnet. It was a good combination and I used Ilocos vinegar which balances the food. I love it. Great for merienda (snack). For Una Chula, it was a mixture of iced tea and calamansi, plus the different local wine such as Imee wine, Bugnay wine and Basi. It was a sort of a rice wine and I love the mixture of my drinks. It gave me a little kick and it was refreshing. :)

Captivating Laoag: Night Stroll at the Provincial Capitol

Well, it's my second night in Ilocos and I enjoyed my stay here. I made a stroll along the city and it was not as crowded as in Manila. Laoag City has many places to see and visit even at night. It was a relatively safe place to roam around as well. Each streets has lights so you will not worry about safety by strolling. I enjoyed do the strolling and it made me feel safe. So nothing to worry about. :)

So where I started my nightlife here? The Ilocos Norte Provincial Capitol looks amazing at day and looks gorgeous at night. Lights enabled the capitol attractive. It makes this place colorful. The moment I arrived there, I immediately grabbed my camera and took shots.

Aurora Park also beamed with lights which make this place a colorful one. It brightened the area which include Pamulinawen, Peace Pole and Tobacco Monopoly. I wasn't able to went nearer to the park and I only took some shots from the Provincial Capitol.

To the right side of the capitol was the big clock which the seal and map of Ilocos Norte was located. It was inaugurated few days ago.

Laoag City is great both day and night. The places I visited and the lights that were glowing at night makes this city a great place to visit. I also felt safe as I roamed around the city whether by tricycle or by foot. It is a must try exploring the city and you will really like it. :)

And to end my stroll was my walk back to my 3-day residence place in Ilocos Norte, Isabel Suites which by the way located at the heart of the city. Great and spacious room, clean shower and toilet and of course, friendly and accommodating staff. They also served breakfast! :)

Just came back from the Northern Ilocos tour which I visited north of Laoag City and I found it very fruitful and educating. I went back to the city in the late afternoon, rested a bit at Isabel Suites and after that decided to have my early dinner. Some of the staff at the hotel and even my friends suggested to have my dinner at La Preciosa which I find it interesting. I took a tricycle ride and the driver knew it so much and in 10 minutes, I finally arrived to the restaurant.

The restaurant was located along Rizal Street. It was an old looking house and I find it intriguing so I went inside. It has two parts, the first one was a bake or cake shop with some pasalubong items and the staff show the way to the restaurant. They were courteous to me and to the other guests and I went to my table and handed me their menu.

I ordered Crispy Bagnet (deep fried pork) with KBL (kamatis, bagoong, lasona) a mixture of tomatoes, fish sauce and small onion. Oh my goodness! It was a great combination in a rice meal. I love how the bagnet cooked into perfection. I felt the crunchiness as well the juicy of the pork. KBL was amazing. I love the balance of my meal and it was a great partner with rice, promise! I also ordered iced cold calamansi juice. It was one of my best meal in Ilocos! :)

I also ordered dessert to complete my meal. I checked the menu and I ordered a slice of carrot cake which only cost PHP90! When the waiter handed over the carrot cake. I was intrigued on the shredded carrots on top of the icing cake. I immediately grabbed the first bite and suddenly... Boom! I love the taste and texture of carrot cake. Not too sweet and I was surprised about the crunchiness of the shredded carrots and it was a great taste! :)

I was so happy because of having a great meal here so I ordered another slice of carrot cake for take out (to go). I also asked for bill out and prices were really affordable and worth it because of delicious food served from main meal to dessert. I also bought some pasalubong items at the cake shop and explore some other cakes, but I didn't ate some since I was full that time. It was a complete meal for me! :)

Amazing Burgos: Discover & Have Fun @ Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

The White Gem of Burgos, Ilocos Norte

It was a long tour ahead but it never stops me discovering great things here in Ilocos Norte. Solo travels taught me on how to interact with people and at the same time discovering places and share them to everyone. After spending in Bangui, Kuya Rey advised me to proceed to the next town, Burgos, Ilocos Norte. Sun remained present during my journey and I enjoyed it.

The town was situated 45 kilometers north of Laoag City. Burgos is a fifth class municipality with a population of only 8,000+. Former name was Nagpartian until it became Burgos due to the name of Father Jose Burgos who is famous because he was executed during Spanish era together with two other priests due to revolt against Spaniards which lead to a revolution. It was quiet town and a jump point to Bangui and Pagudpud for tourist spots until residents were able to find great things within the town. It was a nature drafted along South China Sea and it was striking due to color white rock formation. Due to its color, it was named Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Trivia: The name Kapurpurawan came from an Ilokano word puraw for "white" or in Tagalog word, "kaputi-putian". It was not a man made structure built on this place but a nature built through its forces: wind, heat and other elements.

Kuya Rey mentioned that this place was part of itinerary so many tourists flocked especially during Summer and Christmas. Travel time from Bangui Wind Farm to this place was 30 minutes. There was a sign mark along the national highway that leads to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. The challenge part was the dirt road going to the main attraction. It was more of an adventure because of scenery until we reached the entrance part. No fees to be collected once we arrived. For me, it was more on a hiking.

There were two options on how to reach the rock formations. First was through walking in which I and Kuya Rey did. Good thing that there was a path going to the rock formation. 15-20 minutes hike will do. Second was a horse back riding for PHP100. It will take you 10 minutes until you reach the attraction. So we choose the first option because I do love walking and taking photos. :)

I was very excited to discover as we moved closer to the attraction. Nevermind the heat of the sun, it was a great journey to this place and it shows a lot of potential for tourism. The moment we arrived, it was breathtaking. God created it and Mother Nature made it flawlessly. :)

There were some tourists including their guide touring around the rock formation. I joined and listened to the explanation. According to him, the rock formation was already here thousands of years ago and it was only discovered few years ago. These lime stones were moved by nature and it was formed by this creamy white color that fascinated the beauty of the rock formation. Unlike before, you may move closer to the main attraction that looked like a sphinx in Egypt but it was prohibited by the authorities. They avoided people to draw closer for it might ruin the beauty in which I fully understood during his explanation. I also noticed some structures at the back of the site. He explained that these were only imitations, and it was filmed a movie starring Vic Sotto and Sen. Bong Revilla's "Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Si Ako" which was shown last year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

How to get there?

Travel to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is very easy. Here are some of the options:

via car / van - once you reached Laoag City, head to Manila North Road by passing Gov. Segundo Avenue. Travel along the highway until you reach Burgos town. There was a direction to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation but it was a dirt road. Travel time from Laoag City to the main attraction is at 1.5 hours.

via commute - ride a bus at the terminal which located at the back of the Provincial Capitol. Buses usually bound to Pagudpud. Fare costs PHP40. Tell the bus driver or conductor to drop you off to the road going to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. Once you drop off to this place, look for a tricycle and hire it back and forth. Do a price haggle from PHP100 to PHP150. Expect dirt road especially on its way to the destination.

Enchanting Bangui: Chasing the Windmills!

Off to the Windmills! :)

It was hot Sunday afternoon and Kuya Rey drove his tricycle after our lunch break at KangKang Windmill Cafe. Travel time was only 10 minutes and we headed to the main attraction of Bangui, The Windmills. Kuya Rey suggested to be at the first windmill in order to have a great view of the remaining 19 windmills. The moment we arrived there, it was a breathtaking view. But before that, let me give you a brief background about these gigantic windmills at Bangui, Ilocos Norte.

It was also named The Northwind Bangui Bay Project. It was already planned during 90's by former Governor Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos as a source of renewable energy. They conducted a study about a better place in building these structures and Bangui was a great place due to location of high wind index. Built on two phases where Phase I was finished last June 20, 2005. It consists of 15 wind turbines (windmills). It was arranged in a single row along Bangui Bay, stretching South China Sea. Each wind turbines were spaced by 326 meters apart. Towering a height of 70 meters which looked like a 20-storey building, with 41 meters motor blade. Additional 5 wind turbines were built on Phase II on year 2008 to increase the capacity of electricity to 33MW.

Trivia: Did you know that Bangui Windmills are the biggest in Southeast Asia and one of a kind structures in the Philippines? It sells 40% electricity to Ilocos Norte and reduced the cost of energy consumption because its renewable. Take note, 50% of electricity consumption of SM Megamall (one of the largest malls in the Philippines) is whole energy consumption of Ilocos Norte, provincial wide.

Wind was blowing from the bay so no wonder this project stood on this location. I heard the sound of motor blades rotating. It was quite scary at first but I immediately enjoyed the beat of it. I was amazed the one of a kind beauty so I took photos after photos. Thanks to Kuya Rey for being a photographer while taking some shots with those windmills. :)

How to get there?

via car / van - once you reached Laoag City, head to Manila North Road by passing Gov. Segundo Avenue. Travel along the highway and you will pass three towns: Bacarra, Pasuquin and Burgos. Once you reach Bangui welcome arch, look for Barangay Baruyen and turn left to the road to Bangui Wind Farm. You will pass dirt and rocky road. Travel time takes 2 hours.

via commute - ride a bus at the terminal which located at the back of the Provincial Capitol. Buses usually bound to Pagudpud. Fare costs PHP50. Tell the bus conductor to drop you off to Barangay Baruyen road to the windmills. Travel time takes 2 hours plus additional 20 minutes tricycle ride from national road to the wind farm. Tricycles available once you drop off from the bus. You may hire the tricycle driver for a tour or just ride and bring you to the wind farm. Tricycle fare ranges from PHP20 to PHP30.

Enchanting Bangui: Lunch Time @ KangKang Windmill Cafe

After spending almost two hour bus ride from Laoag City, I finally reached Bangui, Ilocos Norte. More information about my travel via bus here. I immediately noticed Bangui due to the windmills. It was very attractive and line up along the coastline. I was excited to see it again.

Kuya Rey made a deal about my tour which costed me PHP500 after series of negotiations. He asked me if I already taken lunch. After series of travels and I checked the time where it was ten minutes before 12 noon, I decided to have my lunch first. I suggested Kuya Rey to have lunch at KangKang Cafe in which he immediately knew. I rode his tricycle and travel on half-paved road and during that travel, I was amazed on the windmills because turbines were rotating consistently. I immediately grabbed my camera and took some shots until we reached KangKang Windmill Cafe.

After spending more than 10 minutes tricycle ride, we finally arrived to the famous KangKang Windmill Cafe. I immediately asked why KangKang? I told them since the name sounded intriguing especially to Tagalog speaking people which may lead to green jokes. One of the staff told me that the name of sitio from Barangay Baruyen in which I agreed because I noticed some signage that the location of this place was Sitio KangKang. The place was peaceful and windy of course. It was just your typical eatery or carinderia but they served meals and Ilocano dishes. I ordered and I asked Kuya Rey to join the lunch. He was shy at first but due to my insistent, he joined me. After I ordered, I roamed around the cafeteria and took some photos.

I also talked to some staff and they told me that this was already featured in magazines and television shows and in youtube. I immediately remembered Ramon Bautista's video about this cafe while on his tour in Ilocos. For those who didn't recall, here is the video. It was an interview to one of the staff in the cafeteria.

After 15 minutes, lunch was served. I ordered Pancit Batil Patong (stir fry noodles with poached egg on top), a Cagayan style pancit which was good for two to three persons. I also ordered soft drink for Kuya Rey and mine was Buko Shake. Food was okay, nothing spectacular but I loved the Buko shake. It was also a great ambiance. Expected that the place is windy because of the condition particularly the location of the windmills.

Meal was a bit pricey but it was great experience visiting to this famous place. It was also a great stop over especially if you are hungry along the way especially if you will visit Bangui Windmills.

Bus Travel From Laoag City to Bangui, Ilocos Norte

Way up north! 575 kilometers north of Manila

One of my plan of going to Ilocos Norte is to visit its northern part. It was my second visit to this province and my first travel to this place by myself makes me more excited to explore the beauty of Ilocos Norte. After I visited Sarrat, I headed back to Laoag and walked few meters and reached at the back of the provincial capitol. Thanks to the local people for giving me directions and after few minutes, I was in the bus terminal waiting for my trip to Bangui/Pagudpud towns.

Sun was shining so brightly at 10AM that the bus driver left Laoag City and travel north. Good thing I was seated beside the window in order to viewed those places and northern towns of the province. Bus conductor asked on where was my destination. I immediately answered, "to the place that started its way to Bangui Windmills". He understood it and he mentioned Barangay Baruyen and ticketed me PHP50 for my fare. Travel time took almost two hours and passing the towns Bacarra, Pasuquin and Burgos.

I told the bus conductor to inform the driver dropped me to Barangay Baruyen in which gladly he did. He was so helpful in my trip and made things so easily. I thanked him for the help and smiled back. It was such as long journey but worth it. I headed to the waiting shed and I met Kuya Rey, the tricycle driver which offered a trip to Bangui and Burgos town. I asked the package amount and he said PHP700 but I told him nangina manong (too expensive) and he lowered it to PHP500 and we had the deal. I rode his tricycle (which I failed to took a photo during my trip) and headed to my first destination up north, Bangui Windmills!

A Short & Interesting Visit to Sarrat, Ilocos Norte

I supposed to have my trip north of Laoag City and visit the famous Bangui Windmills and Pagudpud until one staff member of the hotel suggested to have a side trip to Sarrat. I didn't know that former President Ferdinand Marcos' birthplace on this small town east of Laoag City. I asked if it will be a long travel and he said that travel time will take 20 minutes from the city. I hailed a tricycle and asked the driver to drop me off to the terminal to Sarrat. I rode a jeepney and after 20 minutes, I arrived to this quiet town.

Located to the east of Laoag City, Sarrat is a landlocked town situated along Padsan River. It was renamed San Miguel during Spanish colonization and changed it to Sarrat in 1916. A 4th class municipality and one of the quiet and peaceful towns in Ilocos Norte.

I dropped off to the Public Market and walked along the town proper and I find its peacefulness of the area. It was different atmosphere from Laoag and I immediately took some pictures until I reached Sarrat Church.

Sta. Monica Church or simply Sarrat Church, it as built around 17th century. It was constructed in Baroque and Neoclassical styles. I love the design of the church especially the bricks for it shows how old the structure. It was also the last church built by Spaniards in Ilocos Norte. On the right side was the bell tower. It was huge and I automatically saw it. Like other churches in the country, the bell tower was built few meters from the church.

The church was said to be the longest center aisles in Ilocos Norte and one of the longest in the country. at 137 meters long, it should be the one. No wonder that this place was chosen to be the wedding of Irene Marcos (daughter of the late President Ferdinand Marcos and First Lady Imelda Marcos) and Gregorio "Greggy" Araneta. It was one of the lavish wedding event in the year 1983 with thousands of guests and it was like a feast during the event.

I was just amazed on the design and those baked bricks and formed into a church. I felt peacefulness and solemnity inside. After I prayed and took some photos inside, I went outside and saw a convent which it called Casa del Palacio Real. This place was frequently built before due to fire. It was completely restored on June 1896. The convent was made of baked bricks. I was interested in the arch bridge that connected the church and convent. I love the design of it.

This town offered lot of interesting places and it was a worth visit. It was a short and meaningful way of discovering the other town of Ilocos Norte. I also visited the new Sarrat Municipal Hall (former Irene Marcos guest house) and also the famous Ferdinand Marcos Museum on where the late president was born in this town.

How to get there?

via car / van - from Laoag City, drive along Rizal Street / Laoag-Sarrat-Piddig-Solsona Road. Travel time takes only 15 minutes. Tourist spots are along the national road and you will never get lost. First destination will be Marcos Museum and followed by the New Sarrat Municipal Building.

via commute - Jeepneys and Tricycles are means of transportation in Sarrat. From Laoag City, just ride a jeepney to the terminal along Rizal Street. Travel time will be 20 minutes. However, waiting will take much longer due to filling up of passengers. Fare costs PHP13. Travel will end at Sarrat Public Market but you drop off to Marcos Museum since it's just along the National Road.

Traditional meets Fusion Ilocano Meal!

When it comes to food trip, I am very excited. In Laoag City, many restaurants served from any variations: traditional Ilocano dishes, local and international cuisines and many more. One restaurant serves Ilocano food but more of a twist. It was a Traditional meets Fusion. This place was famous in Laoag and I was curious to try it. I hailed a tricycle and asked the driver to brought me to Saramsam Restaurant and after five minutes, I arrived to this place.

It was featured in different magazines and television shows. No wonder that I arrived here and entered to the restaurant, I was amazed because of the traditional interior designs. It was more on romantic touch, dinner for two set-up. The place was very cozy and the staff were courteous too. Good thing that few people dined the moment I arrived so I easily looked for a place and waiter handed over the menu book.

I ordered Poque-Poque Pizza, the name sounded intriguing especially to Tagalog speaking people like me. You may ask your friends about that "double" meaning of what I talked about. Going back to the meal, poque-poque is a dish made from eggplant sauteed with tomatoes, egg and onion. The dish will be compliment with rice but with fusion, the restaurant made it into pizza. My drink was Baraniw iced tea. It was an iced tea with Wild Basil. It was a great meal. Poque-Poque Pizza tasted so good and I was amazed on the fusion because it worked on the pizza. For the iced tea, it was beyond expectation. It was not a concentrated iced tea mixture but a real tea with basil. It was nice compliment on my food trip meal.

I tried also Malunggay sherbet and it tasted so good. Not too sweet and I didn't taste bitterness as I expected. It was a great dessert with fusion. :)

It was a great dining experience with Saramsam. Ilocano dishes served with a twist were delightful and at the same time delicious. Good job for letting traditional and fusion Ilocano meal and dishes experienced for both locals and tourists like me. :)

Enriching Batac City: More Than Just Empanada

Batac Empanada: Simply the Best!

After I skipped Batac City enroute to Paoay, I went back to this city for an intended stop over. It was supposed to be a short trip to the newest city of Ilocos Norte. But it went fruitful because of the wonderful view around the city. It was more than empanada so to speak since the city boasts of its yummiest empanada. Batac really surprised me about the development.

Ilocos Norte's second city after Laoag. Batac is also known as Home of the Great Leaders. It was because Batac is the hometown of some of important people in the history of the Philippines. Starting with former President Ferdinand Marcos, Gregorio Aglipay (founder of Philippine Independent Church) and General Artemio Ricarte (Father of Philippine Army). It became a city last 2007 but it went back to a town more than a year later due to controversies such as being a requirement of being a city. However in February 2011, Supreme Court upheld the decision and declared Batac City.

How do I start my trip to this city? Since I was so hungry due to my trip to Paoay, I drop off near the Batac Riverside Empanadaan which located at the center of the city and beside Batac Church. It was raining a bit and I hurried to the place and many vendors encouraged to go to their stalls and taste empanada. I went to Glomy's.

Empanada is a unique food or snack of the Ilocos. Unlike in other countries, empanada is fried rather than baked. The dough was made from rice flour and it was colored orange due to atsuete (anatto). I thought it was food coloring but I was wrong. For the filling, ingredients were mongo, grated unripe papaya, sliced Ilocos longganisa and egg. Then it fried and after 4-5 minutes, ready to serve. This place offers other products such as Miki (noodle soup), longganisa (Ilocos sausage), gifts and other items. It was also a tourist center so expect to see many items that are uniquely Batac made.

After my meal, I roamed around the city and I went to Batac Church, also known as Immaculate Conception Church. Built and restored since it was destroyed in 1620.

I walk south and passed Batac River and headed to Marcos Museum and Mausoleum. The museum showcased the memorabilia of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. Actually, it started being a part of the armed forces and up to his presidency. His works were displayed here. The mausoleum contained a glass-encased coffin of the late president who died last September 28, 1989 due to complications of kidney, lung and liver in Hawaii, USA. His remains was only brought to the Philippines in the year 1993 or 4 years after his death. The mausoleum remained open to the public however, taking pictures inside was still not allowed. I managed to take some photos outside the museum since I went there past 5PM. So if you want to visit, just be early since many tourists visited this place.

Other places within the city were World Peace Center, which showcased about photo gallery of the late President Marcos and it has also a big collage on it. Another one was Aglipay Church, the first Philippine Independent Church built and lastly General Ricarte National Shrine where it showcased General Ricarte's contribution in the Philippine history as a revolutionary hero during World War II. It was part of my itinerary but it didn't push due to heavy rain.

My trip to Batac City became fruitful. I learned a lot during my visit. Actually it was my second visit to the city but this time, I took such time to roamed and explore the beauty of it. It was more than the empanada so to speak. It was more on the history that shaped this town and now a city. :)

How to get there?

**From Laoag City

via commute - If you are coming from the capital city of Laoag, just rode a jeepney that signs Laoag-Batac-Paoay and it will bring you to the town proper. Fare costs you PHP24 and travel time was only 30 minutes.

via private car / van - from Laoag City, drive along Manila North Road southward and passed the town of San Nicolas and you will easily find this city. Travel time was only 20 minutes.

**From Metro Manila

via commute - Ride a bus that bound for Laoag City and drop at Batac city proper since it was just along Manila North Road. Fare ranges between PHP700 to PHP800. Travel time is between 8 and 9 hours.

via private car / van - travel along Manila North Road and you will find Batac City. Mind you, it is a long drive so prepare your food, transportation to be use and time. Travel time is between 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic along the way. :)

Astonishing Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Heavy rain poured on my first travel day in Ilocos Norte, but it did not stopped me in exploring the beauty of the province. After I spent walking along Laoag City capitol area, I rode a jeepney to my next destination, Paoay. I immediately knew that I went to this town to visit one of the most important structure and at the same time one of the beautiful church in the country. After 30 minutes of land travel, I arrived to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Paoay Church.

It rained hard but I took pictures since I was astonished on the beauty of the church. No wonder that this church was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1993. The beauty of the church was seen as far and I felt history right from the start. Nevermind the rain, I love the design and structure of it. :)

It is one of the Baroque churches of the Philippines. The architectural design was mixed of Baroque, Gothic and Oriental features. What I mean Oriental because of the exterior part of the church where it looked like temple in some parts of Asia. On the other hand, Baroque and Gothic was because of the design of exterior too including the sides of the church.

Built last 1694 and completed in 1710. This church was also belong to Earthquake Baroque since it was built and restored from earthquake. Bell tower was separated from the church since it might be fell into pieces once earthquake struck Paoay. The design remained intact as it is and it shown genuine especially the structure built at the heart of the town.

It was also called San Agustin (St. Augustine) Church. As what stated in the marker the bell tower was made of coral stones and it was used by the Katipuneros during revolution war against Spaniards and used again by Filipino guerillas during World War II. As what I read about the history, this church had a significant contribution in Ilocano history but also in the mold of Philippines towards the future.

I were having a great time visiting the church. I was amazed on the beauty because of its structure and also the historical significance of it. The trip was successful. Rain or shine, this place is a worth visit. :)

How to get there?

Paoay is more than 20 kilometers south of Laoag City, the capital of Ilocos Norte. Travel to this lovely town was simple:

via car / van - If you are coming from Laoag City, drive along Manila North Road until you reach Batac City, drive to the right which the sign to Paoay is easily seen. Travel time to Paoay was approximately 25 minutes from Laoag City

- If you come from Metro Manila or any province south of Ilocos Norte, drive along Manila North Road until you reach Batac City. There is a road before the Batac City proper that will lead you to Paoay. Drive along the road until you reach Paoay town proper all the way to the church.

via commute - From Laoag City, take a jeepney (Laoag-Batac-Paoay or Laoag-Batac-Paoay-Currimao) and will take you to Paoay town proper. Just a short walk and you will see the church. Fare costs 34 pesos from Laoag. Terminal was on the right side of the Provincial Capitol. Travel time will take 30 minutes, but mind you that it will take a little bit longer due to waiting of passengers especially in San Nicolas and Batac City.

- From Metro Manila, take a provincial bus bound for Laoag City, drop off to Batac City downtown area. Take a jeepney (same route as above) to Paoay. Fare costs between 700 to 800 PHP for the 9-10 hour bus trip and additional PHP10 for 10 minute jeepney ride to Paoay.

Captivating Laoag: Visiting The Cathedral & The Sinking Bell Tower

And the journey of my walking around Laoag City continued as to my likeness. I headed back to the City Hall and headed below the Gilbert Bridge, which by the way the third longest bridge in the Philippines. I went to the so-called "underpass" and alight to the other side of the road and I was greeted by the Golden Arch, which the world famous McDonalds restaurant located.

I rested for a while but not inside of McDonalds and I took some shots there (like the picture above) and headed to my destination, St. William Cathedral or also known as Laoag Cathedral.

This present Italian Renaissance / Baroque architectural design was not the first structure built in the year 1580. It was started in a wood and nipa palm in building the church. As the time goes by and numerous of nature disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes and also man-made destruction such as Spanish and American revolution and World War II. This church was built and regain its glory. The design was fully restored on its features on year 1891 where the roof of the church was made in galvanized iron.

Heavy rain poured the city and luckily I was inside this church. I just not visit the interior of it. As part of my tradition in visiting churches and cathedral, I knelt down and prayed. Though I was not a believer of saying wishes for a first time visitor of the church, I focused on praying and thanked the Lord for safe travel. After my prayer, I managed to roam around the cathedral and took some photos.

An 85 meter walk from the cathedral and I easily found one of the tallest structure in the city, The Sinking Bell Tower. During Spanish era, this structure was the tallest. Made of bricks with a mixture of other ingredients such as lime and sand. However, due to many years and decades past, the bell tower had begun to sank by few inches per year. Men and horse can go inside the tower before but today people are no longer enter inside the tower due to current situation (shrinking inch by inch per year).

These structures really tested the time from centuries to centuries. Good thing that they preserved these historical figures that will pass on to generation to generation. It was a great learning experience to witness these structures. :)
