http://socks-studio.com/2015/05/27/alpine-architecture-an-utopian-city-by-bruno-taut-1917/

In 1917, German architect Bruno Taut conceived an utopian city in the Alps and documented it through 30 illustrated plates in the book “Alpine Architecture”. The treatise developed the ambitious plans for a city to be constructed by the same inhabitants of the community. “Alpine Architecture” didn’t limited to urban planning but condensed Taut’s pacifist and communal ideals as well as his mystical researches.

What happens on the island has to primarily generate confluence – one that becomes cultural and enduring. Rather than a strict re-naturalisation plan, or it's opposite, a conquer of space for the city, we propose a hinge: a multilayered process where people and nature can not only coexist but cooperate. We plan a device which can resolve many of the existing challenges while offering various possibilities of experience. Various new perspectives are composed – of the Osumi natural ecosystems, of the city, castle and its surroundings, mirroring those which the city is so plentiful of in a series of new Osumi Panoramas. From the river embankment three walkways project over a canal-pool and give access to a path on the top of a stepped earth bank, before continuing towards the island and our three proposed structures. Each suggest a distinct way of experiencing nature and offer a separate degree of protection to a recovered environment. Every typology enacts the idea of the panorama in various ways, providing each a particular form of perception: the Greenhouse contains, the Colonnade protects and the Market discloses. This narrative of panning, scanning and focusing on particular ecologies is complemented with spaces for programme and public activities. The Greenhouse, the Colonnade and the Market are to become landmarks of cultural and social significance. Osumi Panoramas aims to create cultural significance with moderate means: setting a simple infrastructure where both natural and urban environments may coincide in a graceful yet convincing manner.

Originally from Italy’s German-speaking province of South Tyrol, he graduated from the Technical University of Vienna in 2005. Since then, he has worked for numerous offices: STAR, TD, OMA/AMO, l’AUC and Dominique Perrault Architecture (DPA). Most of his projects imply a multidisciplinary declension, such as the work on Greater Paris (DPA), Greater Moscow (l’AUC), Prada (AMO), or the exhibition The Image of Europe (TD/AMO) for the European Union.Marcello Tavone is an architect and urbanist. He studied at the Technische Universiteit of Delft (NL) and in Venice, where he graduated in 2011 from the IUAV. By collaborating with the Parisian offices of l’AUC and Dominique Perrault he has been able to develop projects on, and through, various scales –from prospective urban research (Montpellier 2040, Grand Paris) to architecture, conceptual studies, graphic and web design, ultimately also curating Dominique Perrault’s research platform DPAx.Weltgebraus have assembled for OfHouses a very consistent selection of residential projects for which they wrote this insightful introduction:"When in 1901 Peter Behrens completed his first and own house on Darmstadt’s Mathildenhöhe, he decided to inscribe a “Hausspruch” by lyricist Richard Dehmel on its façade. “Stand steady, my house, amidst the roaring of the world” (Steh’ fest mein Haus im Weltgebraus) is a sort of Godspeed wishingthe house may withstand all kind of physical and metaphoric maelstroms the future might bring. A desire for perfection, but also a fatalistic acknowledgment that the unknown can’t be fully anticipated – like a shipbuilder, the architect confidently puts his unmanned house at sea whilst anxiously hoping it won’t collide with anything. Ultimately it would be Behrens’ himself that would sail swiftly towards modernist waters, ideologically abandoning his Jugendstil-house which he sold before even having lived in it.While in theory the modes in which architecture can react to Weltgebraus can be summarized in adaptation or denial – and its consequences in relativization or monumentalization – the reading of this interrelation on specific cases is anything but binary. The gradient and array of situations that isrevealed by examining houses through this lens was ultimately the criteria for our selection for OfHouses."http://weltgebraus.com/

http://socks-studio.com/2015/04/19/steven-holls-bridge-of-houses-1979-1982/

Throughout history bridges have been a focus of legends of every civilization. Esthetes, philosophers and poets have used the bridge as a transcendent form.

During the first years of his career and up to the early 1980's, architect Steven Holl engaged in the design of a number of conceptual proposals, never-to-be-built projects destined to foster speculation and investigation on architectural thought.

Pamphlet Architecture #7, curated by the same Holl in 1978, investigated the theme of "Bridges of Houses" and was probably intended as an ideal companion to the very first issue "Bridges" (1977). In it, two projects by Holl are documented: the first, an ideal speculation, is a 1979 proposal for a Melbourne, (Australia) competition for a 'landmark'. The second is a pragmatic yet unbuilt design for the recovery of the then disused High Line elevated railway in Chelsea, Manhattan, by the construction of housing types over the rail link.

Janssens’ work foregrounds the body’s perception of the world and itself in it. She often uses light, natural optical phenomena or glass as medium. Beautifully made, her works exude the impression of great simplicity yet create vivid experiences of the act of seeing, evoking a heightened awareness of the changeability and fleetingness of individual perceptions. Her practice is characterized by its openness and changeability. Accordingly, the group of new sculptures draws on the optical effects of reflection and refraction to produce constantly changing impressions. As viewers move around the objects with suspended liquids, and as light passes through these small, contained spaces, unexpected views are reflected and their surfaces appear to become momentarily brightly colored. Analogously, the large vertical iridescent mirror works exist in infinite facets. One, Magic Mirror, consists of three layers of glass. Sandwiched between two intact panes, the central pane has been broken into a myriad of pieces. It is securely preserved in its fragile state, but as light hits the surface, each cracked seam reflects it at different angles, creating variant shapes and colors.
