We love when things go as planned but this shoot ended with a different plan than intended. Leah & Alex, whose wedding we will be shooting in November had originally planned for us all to go up north. The weather did not go as planned so we had to improvise. We really loved the whimsical and dreamy nature of this shoot. We basically carpooled around until we stumbled on places that looked like they worked. Toward the end of the day, the clouds gave way to some awesome light. Congrats on your engagements Alex and Leah. We cannot wait to shoot your big day!

As promised.. Round 2 of Emily and Peter’s Traditional Cambodian wedding. Without a doubt one of the most fun receptions we have ever photographed.

This one will need some explanation Earlier in the day while in the hotel we had met these guys in the elevator. They are in a rock band from Mexico, Moderatto. Naturally when they stopped by afterward they were invited in… to pose…

And then take over the bands instruments and play so EVERYONE could dance!!

We are.. Emily + Peter (Part 1)

One of the very last things I remember about this wedding was Emily walking up to us and putting her arms on our shoulders and saying “Are we ever going to see you guys again?” I couldn’t have said it better as we will miss them and their wonderful families dearly. Wedding day began for us sometime before 6 and finished sometime around 12:30am the next day. The culmination of a series of events that blew our minds and stole our hearts. Emily and Peter gave us an amazing wedding to work with filled with color, culture and killer wardrobes. It was the most dynamic wedding we have experienced to date. Emily and Peter have a wonderful family

Emily and Peter had decided on a traditional Cambodian Wedding. Khmer weddings symbolize the beautiful legend of the origin of Cambodia and parallel the marriage of the first Khmer prince, Preah Thong, to the naga princess, Neang Neak. The prince was a foreigner exiled from his homeland, and during his travels encountered and fell in love with the naga princess. As a marriage gift, the father of the naga princess swallowed a part of the ocean, and thus formed the land of Cambodia. Pretty heavy stuff if you ask us!

A traditional Khmer wedding is one of the most joyous occasions for a Khmer family and typically lasts from three days to an entire week. It is a grand affair, full of color and festivity and wonderful food, as well as steeped in tradition. Family, friends, and other members of the community come together to share in the celebration. Musicians play throughout the day on traditional instruments, and the couple is dressed like royalty. The bride may change her outfit several times in one day. Emily changed 3 times!

Their wedding would begin in the morning with the Groom’s Processional down the street and into Emily’s parents house. The groom’s procession approaches the bride’s home bearing wrapped platters of gifts, usually fruits and Khmer desserts, and is led by a band of musicians and singers. Once inside they began the Presentation of the Dowry and Exchange of Rings. A Hair Cutting Ceremony followed. During this part of the ceremony, to prepare the bride and groom for their life as a married couple, their hair is symbolically cut, representing a fresh start to their new relationship together as husband and wife. After a change of dress, the Passing of the Blessings commenced and finally a Knot Tying Ceremony. In this final and most memorable stage of the wedding, family members and friends tie the bride and groom’s left and right wrists with blessing strings. The praises and well-wishes of happiness, good health, success, prosperity, and long-lasting love are acknowledged and witnessed by the loud sound of the gong and joyful cheer.

We Are.. Layla Hope

I had the wonderful opportunity of photographing my cousin Sarah’s beautiful newborn, Layla. Born on September 15th at 3:42 pm, she weighed in at 7lbs and 19 1/2 inches. Sarah’s older kids Jordyn and Drue are so excited to have Layla around. During the session they were constantly wanting to hold her and give her kisses! Congratulations to you, Sarah… little Layla is amazing! Big thanks to my aunt Laura for helping with the session!

This is a pretty big landmark. I dont like to shoot family or friends really because it is an odd dynamic, expecially when they are a photographer. I am barely comfortable in my own skin so you can imagine the fear that struck when my beautiful wife asked if I would take a few shots of her. I couldn’t have a better model as she regularly blows my mind with her beauty. Everything about her moves me to be better at everything I do. She is just as amazing inside as she is beautiful on the outside. I feel lucky to have her as a wife and best friend.

Thanks to Rachael Earl another amazing photog and friend for help with a location that suited what we desired.

Ahhh.. Emily and Peter.. our Asian counterparts.. Quite frankly.. we have the most inspiring clients alive. We are so lucky to be in this business doing what we love but the greatest inspiration we get comes from our clients and listening to the paths they took that inevitably led them to each other. Emily and Peter are truly an amazing couple. One of our first clients ever, we secretly could not wait to get to LA to shoot them because we love the area so much. California light is some of the best light in my opinion. If we could live there and still have our shirts we would. The entire trip was too short but we managed to fit in half the pacific oceans’ worth of sushi, deep thought provoking conversation and make some fantastic friends (on the 4th of July mind you). Peter works on the set of Dexter (swoooon) and has written scripts of his own (Lunch Ticket Films, yes.. i plugged it) and is loaded with fantastic stories. Emily is beautiful and has a soft and gentle spirit about her. The two of them blow our minds and we hope the pictures capture the amazing love we could see in both of them.

We cannot wait to shoot your wedding….

We Are.. The Earl Family

Rachael and Dan, our dear friends, have just about the cutest and sweetest family around. We absolutely adore their two daughters, Abbie and Brookie… so naturally, we were excited to find out they were expecting their third child! They chose to keep the sex of the baby secret with all three pregnancies, much to everyone’s dismay Rachael was having contractions for weeks, which was unlike her other two pregnancies… so we were pretty convinced this stubborn baby was going to be a boy! Well, were we wrong! Charlotte Madeline was born on July 6th at 2:13 AM. She weighed in at 9 lbs, 6oz, 21 inches. Healthy, and cute as a button… she is so loved and lucky to be a part of the Earl family. Congratulations, we love you guys!

We are.. Stephanie + Pablo

For our second destination wedding in the month of May we found ourselves in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jason spent the morning up in Snowbird with Pablo and his two boys getting ready about fifteen minutes North of where us girls were. I got a call from Jason telling me that it was 27 degrees and snowing which I found hard to believe since it was 55 degrees and sunnny where I was staying with Stephanie! Salt Lake’s weather was a bit bi-polar that day! For their formals we took them into the woods up in the canyon and then to the snow… they were freezing their butts off, but they were absolute troopers! Their ceremony was given by the real-life inspiration for Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite (seriously, Pedro’s character was based off of their officiant!) in the most beautiful backyard. Afterwards, guests ate, drank and danced the afternoon away! For a parting gift they picked out different treats from an amazing candy bar that included the best macarons I’ve ever tasted! Special thanks to Nastosha Roberts of Cornerstone for coordinating this wonderful wedding and helping carry Stephanie’s 11 layer wedding dress! Pablo and Stephanie – it was a pleasure meeting you both and your amazing family… we had a great time and we wish you all the best in life and love!

We Are.. Liz + Ryan’s Winery Wedding!

It might be cliche, but we have to share with everyone just how much we enjoyed every last bit of this wedding. Liz + Ryan had our first of four California weddings this year! They tied the knot at a great little winery called Murrieta’s Well, in the charming town of Livermore. From the start we were welcomed with open arms by not just Liz + Ryan, who have known each other since elementary school, but also their insanely awesome bridal party. All of them were so great to work with, and especially easy to photograph. We spent most of the time laughing and listening to stories about their friendship through the years with the bride and groom. The relationships they have with their friends and family really stood out for us. We could see from the smiles on guests faces and the speeches that were given, just how special they are to everyone.

As Ryan said, Liz really did pour her heart and soul into their wedding. She created tons of handmade details, picked out incredible flowers for the bouquets (some of the flowers were made out of wood!) and executed everything perfectly. Liz and Ryan even incorporated their dogs into the wedding! It was truly an honor to be part of their special day… so a big thank you to the happy couple, their friends and family. We had an amazing time and won’t forget it! We wish you the best

We Are… Taylor + Ray!

This session was a breeze… from outfits, to props, Taylor had it down, we just had to show up! We’re glad we did, they brought us a dozen cookies from Paradise Bakery! Really can’t say enough about the two of them… they’re kind, hilarious, and insanely in love. WE HAD A BLAST!
