Whatcha doing Thursday?

I wanted to let you know this this Thursday, February 23 from 5:30-8:30 there will be a happy hour held at ABC the Tavern to benefit Blondes vs. Brunettes (BvB), an organization dedicated to fighting Alzheimer’s Disease. I have recently taken on the role of running BvB Cleveland’s Twitter account (follow us!).

Here are the details:

Where: ABC the Tavern in Ohio City

When: Thursday, Feb. 23^rd from 5:30 -8:30 p.m.

Why: To help us recruit players, coaches and committee members! (Or, just have fun!)

Anywho, originally, I was really excited for this long weekend but then I became sick as a dog on Saturday. Ugh. At least it was on a long weekend instead of having to miss work (which would be impossible this week!).

Friday night was fun though! Jen, Alicia, Amanda, and I plus our significant others (Matt, Hans, Scott, and Todd) all went to Deagans and then bowling for a fun night out. <—- I love how our significant others all have Twitter. <3

I started with the Deviled Eggs… which are amazing. Seriously.

Then I had the Spicy Shrimp Tacos. Yum.

Todd and I split the Pommes Frites (fancy schmancy french fries which were to die for. I wish I was more of a food writer, but trust me, these were good).

Deagan, himself, offered complimentary dessert to our table. I was kinda food-star struck. (“Um, HI. I am Julie and I love your restaurant. Can I bathe in the same bowl you make the deviled eggs in? K? Thanks.“) The desserts were incredible. If it was socially acceptable to lick the platter they came on, we each would have. In fact, I think a couple of us were eying each other to see who would do it first.

After dinner, we went bowling at an event that benefit Secondhand Mutts (see a post on Why CLE? for more info). It was a jolly good time. We played three games and it’s imperative that I tell you that I beat Todd by 15 points in one game. ~~He beat me in the other two but I’m not going to blog about that.~~ You know what else? I have tendonitis in my right arm (it’s slowly going away though, thanks to Bikram) and really, I shouldn’t even be bowling. Can you imagine how much I’ll kick his arse once my arm heals? (Um, is anyone else this competitive?). Hehe.

On Saturday morning, Todd and I went to Bikram together (he has been going a few times and really likes it!). Throughout the whole class, my nose was incredibly runny and I was so uncomfortable. I have never had this happen in class before – I was really getting sick. I even had to ask for a tissue during class since I ran out of my supply. Ugh.

On Saturday and Sunday I stayed in and worked on getting better. I am still not 100%, but I’m sure I will be tomorrow (gooooooo optimism!). At least, I am crossing my fingers.

I finally caught up on the Bachelor episodes. Since I don’t have cable, I watch them online so I really have to make time to watch them. Can you believe who was kicked off yesterday? I almost cried. I can’t wait until next week… it looks so good.

Happy Valentine‘s Day!

How are you celebrating?!

I really love Valentine’s Day because I feel like it’s an excuse to watch cheesy movies, eat chocolate, and admire flowers. Or, in Todd’s and my case, it’s an excuse to be super lazy and watch a movie, while eating sushi (at least 10 rolls of spicy tuna). That’s our plan for tomorrow.

Valentine’s day party and amazing cake

Hi all!

It’s not everyday that you get invited to a Valentine’s Day party, right?

Well, when Roxanne invited me to her semi-annual Valentine’s Day party to celebrate all things pink, glittery, and heartsy, I had to say yes. <3 Kali was there too!

Roxanne went all out! She even had party favors filled with fun Valentine’s themed gifts. Also, she had a prize for the person wearing the best Valentine’s Day themed outfit.

There was a TON of food… especially desserts. See those big cupcakes to the top right? They were unbelievable.

I finally tried Whipped Cream flavored vodka (plus Whipped Cream with vodka inside…). Roxanne had both to sample. I was a huge fan of the vodka!

It was such a fun night!

On Saturday, my mom celebrated her birthday and invited everyone over to celebrate! It was a blast. Here she is opening up a present from Melanie. I love her face! Haha.

I made my Holy Moly Garlicy Guacamole.

I was in charge of the cake and my goal was to pick one up from a local bakery in Lakewood. Todd recommended Elmwood Bakery. I am so happy we went with them! They cake was to die for. My mom even said it was in the top 5 cakes she’s ever had. For someone who loves cake, that is saying something. It was a simple yellow cake with white icing.

It was light and fluffy.

We played Catch Phrase… (my team was the best, obviously).

Who is she?

My mom…

taught me to love the outdoors.

taught me how to stand up for what I believe in, no matter how long it takes. The worst they can say is no.

was a runner the majority of her life. About 20-30 miles a week, without fail. She is now a dedicated yogi and follows a strength training routine.

takes care of her grand son and daughter while my sister is at work.

stayed at home with my sisters and I. The memories are endless.

complains about her lack of eyelashes, however has the most gorgeous skin I’ve ever seen.

used to show dogs. In her early twenties, she had three Afghan Hounds that she groomed herself.

put herself through college by opening up a dog grooming business.

is proud of her MBA and math degree. In her eyes, most problems can be solved mathematically.

has a child-like giggle. Just hearing her laugh and have fun makes me laugh and have fun.

has a very simple palette. Yellow cake with white icing pleases her.

knows how to fix anything, or at least knows where to go or who to ask.

has the greatest taste in home decorating. Or, maybe that’s because we share the same taste. I’m sure you would agree, though.

has the energy of the energizer bunny.

refuses to get a Facebook account, but is a huge supporter of this blog.

listens while I talk and responds accordingly.

sometimes knows me better than I know myself.

is my best friend. And probably both of my sister’s best friend as well.

Being selfish

Hello!

Today was a great day. I really live for days like these. Work went really well, I had a wonderful evening and so much to look forward to tomorrow!

One thing I am really trying to focus on since I started on my yoga challenge and working with Katie is being selfish. The more I examine my life, I realize I think more about others than myself. While normally this is a good thing, there are times when it can be bad.

An area of my life that this applies is being social. For example, if friends want to hang out and suggest a time, I will usually be agreeable to that time even if I already had yoga or running on my schedule. I tend to put their needs before my own and cancel my fitness commitments.

I have learned that this is not the best way to live my life. In some ways it’s important and admirable to put others’ needs before my own, but in order to be healthy and reach my own goals, I need occasionally be selfish.

Earlier this week my dad asked if I would like to do dinner on Thursday. I told him that I was planning on attending yoga that night and would be available after, which would be a late 7:30 dinner. My selfishness paid off because my dad offered to attend class with me and then go to sushi after! A total win-win in my book.

Unfortunately, he pulled a muscle yesterday and he decided to rest instead. He still met me out for sushi and drinks though! I went to Bikram and was able to see my dad.

It was a super fun night of conversation and being together. We ordered martini’s which I feel “classed” me up a little since I was wearing sweat pants and a zip-up.
