You can now download your email from Hotmail with your favorite mail client, without using third-part software like FreePOPs.

Useful even for those MSN Live Messenger users that don’t use Hotmail

Earlier I said that I don’t use Hotmail; but I’m a MSN Live Messenger user, and my contacts usually send me some messages to my Hotmail inbox, thinking that it’s my primary email account.

And thanks to new Microsoft POP server, I can receive my hotmail mail directly in my Gmail web client, without checking Hotmail’s web site for new emails. Here is a screenshot (click for details):

Have you ever wrote an email, talking about an attached file, but forgetting to attach it before sending the email? Well, Gmail Labs helps you, as I wrote in the “Forgotten attachment detector” page (under Gmail tutorial). An useful feature… but still imperfect.

In fact, this experimental feature recognizes only “I’ve attached“ and “I have attached”: every other variations will let you send the email without the attachment, without warning you.

It works only for English messages, too - if you write an email in another language, it’s useless.

So, Gmail team, let’s improve this simple but promising feature… Gmail could grow even more!

Sadly, TwitterFox used to mistake the “in reply to” link: instead of the message we was actually replying to, Twitterfox always linked our recipient’s latest message. The new Twitterfox version (1.7.3) no longer suffers of this problem…

Here are the TwitterFox 1.7.3 improvements:

• new context menu to each tweets (it doesn’t work on Firefox 2 for Mac);
• increased contrast of background color of read/unread messages;
• fixed the “in reply to” link;
• (for other improvements, see TwitterFox changelog)

It also seems that TwitterFox perfomances improved on Mac OS X.

So, you really should update TwitterFox. And if you still don’t use TwitterFox, download it quickly: is a handy tool to indirectly update your Facebook status, too!

I’ve published, inside the Facebook tutorial, the complete list of Facebook smileys. You can find it here: “Facebook chat emoticons“.

Even if this tutorial is quite simple, I’ve encountered some problems to write it, related to the way Wordpress handles textual smileys.

Wordpress, in fact, automatically converts all textual emoticons into graphical ones. Since I didn’t want to turn off graphical smilies on all articles, I’ve had to write a plugin to deactivate them on a post-per-post basis.

Are you using both these Web 2.0 services, and do you want to synchronize your Facebook status via Twitter updates, in order to:

• write only on Twitter…
• … show your Facebook friends your tweet automatically…
• … and save your time?

If so, this mini tutorial should come in handy: “Using Twitter to update Facebook status”.

This solution has one “bug”: redundancy. A friend who follows you both on Facebook and Twitter will see the same message twice. A bit spammy, isn’t it?

However, I don’t have time nor so many thing to say, in order to differentiate the messages I post in two or more social networks… and you?

An online PDF reader will open, with all the main feature to read the document, as you can see from the screenshot:

You can navigate thorough the pages and zoom them. Printing the document, or viewing it in plain HTML doesn’t seem to work very well, at the moment. Color depth of images isn’t very high, too.

You can even select and copy a text to the clipboard (but not images). The selecting method is a bit strange: you have to draw a rectangle around the text you want to select…

… and release the mouse. The top-left corner will be the starting point of the selection, and the bottom-right corner the ending point:

Even if this PDF viewer has some bugs (it’s still in beta), it’s a very good tool to take a quick look at the document. It’s also very lightweight, and it runs smoothly even on my old Mac.

Why am I so impressed?

• In the HTML code, the article (the main content) is placed above the sidebars;
• The Title Tag is in the correct form, “Post title < Blog name”, instead of the ugly default form “Blog name > Blog Archive > Post title” (which will be truncated by Search Engines, ‘cos it’s too long): you’ll get higher rankings in Search Engines, and more traffic.
• In the posts’ pages, the post’s title is placed inside H1 Tags, as W3C suggests (and maybe Search Engine too)
• The header is narrow, and it won’t steal the reader’s attenction from the main content.
• … it’s free!

Of course, there are some shortcomings, too: you still need to modify it in order to show category descriptions in category’s pages. But it’s still a good Wordpress theme.
