PiXPO is a Victoria, BC, Canada company that offer video/photo/audio sharing.

The unique twist is the files are served from your machine. This saves the hassles of uploading the files and allows them to be delivered at full fidelity. Additionally, users can choose for the files to be public or private to share those special memories with just their friends and families.

As your machine is the one serving up the media, If your machine is offline so is your media. An upcoming update will remove that limitation by subscribing to a hosting package. Additionally if your media gets popular, PiXPO caches the media and delivers it so your home machine doesn’t come to a screeching halt.

In May they raised a $6.5 MM Series A financing round lead by Madrona, with participation from GrowthWorks, Yaletown Venture Partners, Springbank TechVentures.

Look for some exciting things from PiXPO 4.0 launching around October.

Dapper is officially my favorite web application I’ve reviewed! And I only started playing with it early this morning. Dapper will change the way I use the internet!

They’ve executed on something I’ve been wishing for for quite some time. I’m SO glad I don’t have to build it now.

Dapper allows you extract data and create a web service out of ANY webpage. No need to understand grep, curl or complex scripting. They provide a visual interface for selecting the content elements that you want to capture from a page.

They’ve done a decent job with the interface for defining which content you want to scrape from a page though I think they can and will do more to make the parsing easier.

Once you’ve configured a Dapper, you can output the resulting data in an array of formats:

XML - A raw XML feed
HTML - A simple HTML display of the scraped data
RSS - A RSS Feed
Alert - Sends an email alert whenever the data on the page changes.
Email - Emails the data to any email address
Google Map - Creates a Google map with any address data from the data source.
Google Gadget - Creates a gadget to place on your Google homepage
Image Loop - Creates a scrolling display of all the images in the data feed
JSON - A JSON datafeed that you can utilize directly in your javascript apps
Link to Another Dapper - Allows you to use data from one Dapper in another Dapper

To top it all off, they’ve created API’s for PHP4, PHP5 and Java5 allowing you to easily access the data generated from your dapper.

The BILLIONS of pages out there that don’t have an API or RSS feed can now be parsed without a lot of effort. I firmly believe Dapper will be a game changing and disruptive internet service. Dapper will empower a new generation of web applications and mashups.

They are currently in beta with an expected August release. I’m completely excited to see what the Interent community does with this.

Mashupers start your engines!

I’m proud to announce Zigtag has qualified for the Dragon’s Den, thank you for everyone who voted for me.

It’s a super interesting concept in that I’ve got 30 minutes to convince them to invest in Zigtag at the end of the taping they either decide to invest individually, in a syndicate or not at all. We negotiate the investment and equity on the spot and if all the stars align, shake hands and have a done deal. THAT is a pretty pressure filled 30 minutes.

These investors have to have some serious instincts to be able to invest 5 or 6 figures in companies with about 30 minutes of due diligence. Pretty wild! Rumor has it they’ll see upwards of 100 deals in the next week. The show will air on CBC in Canada in October.
Tomorrow the five dragons I’ll be facing are:

    * Kevin O’Leary, popular host of ROB TV’s SqueezePlay, he sold his educational software firm to Mattel for $3.2 billion dollars.
* Robert Herjavec, sold his IT security firm at the height of the dot.com boom for over a $100 million dollars.
* Lawerence Lewin, founder of La Senza, a chain of lingerie shops with more than 194 stores around the world.
* Jim Treliving, a former RCMP officer who now owns Boston Pizza. In 2005, his resturants generated well over $400 million in sales.
* Jennifer Wood, whose career in the cattle business started in 1990, and is now one of the most influential executives in the Canada’s beef industry.

The 5 dragons are all Canadian success stories. Self-made millionaires. I respect that!

Wish me luck! Hopefully I survive the attack of the dragons.

Okay loyal readers, friends, family, bloggers and Google searchers, Zigtag needs your help!

You’ve been reading this blog for months an not even clicked on an ad. Well I have something even better for you to click on!

Zigtag auditioned for a TV show last week called the Dragons Den. The CBC Canada show is based on the BBC version by the same name (and kicks ASS on the US edition American Inventor). In the show companies present a 10 minute pitch to the Dragons (5 angel/venture investors) and then negotiate live with the Dragons for their investment. Compress the entire process of pitching and negotiating into a single show – that’s my idea of efficient investing.

Let’s show them the power of the blogosphere. I need you to go vote and ideally spread the word to your friends, family and fellow blog readers. I need massive grassroots campaign to let the TV show producers know that cool Canadian software companies need a shot.

I’m sure there will be tons of cool widgets on the show, but getting a software company on TV won’t be quite as easy. Software isn’t nearly as visual as the latest solar beer chiller that keeps your beer cold in the sun (no that’s not on the show but you can steal the idea if you want to).

With enough votes and comments from people expressing they need a better way to search, save and share information, they won’t be able to deny me.

So go vote if you’re really excited about Zigtag, feel free to add some comments in the post expressing why the you need what Zigtag is offering.

As a bonus for your clickage, this is the first public information (other than our new 30 second ad.) on what Zigtag is up to. Go get a sneak peek into what Zigtag is going to be all about.

Another announcement I’ve been meaning to make is I’ve taken the leap and am now focusing full time on Zigtag as of July 1st. Prior to that I was working part time for the last company I created. Giving up a nice income stream is a small price to pay for the ability to put 100% focus on Zigtag.

We’re in the process of arranging a small angel round of financing (of which we’ve had our first piece close already. YAY!). The Dragon’s Den opportunity is not only a source of investment, but also an opportunity to get national TV exposure for Zigtag and it looks like it would be a ton of fun!

As a further update, Zigtag is currently in early alpha and in use by a select handful of adventurous users. We’ve got a few months of development remaining to get the right feature set in place that makes it easy for users to search, save and share their information. If you haven’t yet signed up to be one of the first users, please goto Zigtag and sign up now.

Now go vote YES!. It’s your blogospheric duty!

Scroll all the way to the bottom of that post for the voting box.

Podcasts are hot and getting hotter. But advertising on podcasts is just getting started. One reason? Lack of content. That’s right it’s a chicken and egg problem.

Well Zigtag is giving your a free chicken right now! (Or is it an egg?)

Here is a 30 second advertisement for Zigtag. Add it to your podcast where you think an ad would be a great sell. Sure I’m not a paying advertiser… but your listeners won’t know it. They’ll hear the ad and realize they too should be advertising but actually should pay you some money.

It will be a great way to start advertising on your podcast, and it would be a great service for Zigtag as well. It’s hard to sell ads if you don’t have any ads already, so I’d love to be your first ad just to get the ball rolling!

You can download it from http://web2.0central.com/zigtag30.mp3 and add it you your podcast.

This idea was inspired by Kevin Burton’s Adsense angel funding idea where he asked bloggers to add his Adsense ID to some or all of their advertisements as a way of community funding for TailRank.
I’m not quite as smart as Kevin as his concept actually generated some income, but if anyone takes me up on this, hopefully a few more people come sign up at Zigtag and maybe you even get a real paying advertiser.

So, if you decide to add this add to your podcast, comment on this post and I’ll keep a running list of anyone who decides to show us support.

Reg

P.S. This was my first cut at creating a podcast ad using Garageband. I think it’s okay but love any feedback on the content or presentation. Blast away!

We are calling on all members of the Canadian Technology community (VCs, Start-ups, bloggers, NFPs and entrepreneurs) to rise up and join together in celebrating technology and innovation in the Great White North.

To assist with this, I’ve joined with Sean Wise in creating a webring for what we have dubbed the CANADIAN TECH MOB. Please join us by registering your websites and blogs on www.CanadianTechMob.com, join the webring and add the logo to your sites. Together let’s represent our home: true, strong and free!

Long live Canada! Long live the Canadian Tech Mob!!!

As a part of the Mob, it’s your duty to spread the word… post this on your blogs and encourage all your Canadian friends to participate.

The crew at Cambrian House are up to some wicked innovation. I caught their site from their ad on Techcrunch and I’m super impressed.

Cambrian House, a fellow Canadian Company based out of Calgary, encourages people to submit ideas which they will use the community to filter. The ones the community likes will be passed onto the development phase where a community of developers will build it. Finally they’ll throw the business out to market and then split the profits among all contributors based on the value they add in the process.

They call the process crowdsourcing and are are focused on web based applications that can be built in 6 weeks or less.
There are a bunch of ideas submitted already and they are pitted head to head in a voting to gauge which ideas the community likes. The development side I’ll assume is awaiting the effects of the voting to come into play. I’m anxious to see how the development process comes into play.

Their website is very engaging and informative and if they put the same effort into marketing the ideas that come from this, I think this could really work. From their guess the weight of their goat mascot contest to sending 1,000 pizzas to the Googleplex… they’re marketing certainly doesn’t fit in a tight little box.
As a guy with more ideas than time, I think this thing could really work.

HiveLive is an interesting service allowing you to save your bookmarks, notes, wine reviews or account passwords online in either a shared or private form.

You can setup multiple “Hives” each with their own permissions and users. In a hive you can create different posts with their own types from contacts to bookmarks to reviews. Each post type has a pre-defined set of fields to fill in, with the ability to add additional fields as necessary.

Once posted (and assuming it’s in a public hive), people can comment on it.

HiveLive is a cross between structured blogging and social software. I think they should look at adopting Microformats and some API’s so that people can do more with their data.

It looks fairly polished and as more content gets into the system, it will be interesting to watch.

I’ve arranged for the first 50 people to get a free invite by clicking this link.

Please welcome the newest sponsor to Web 2.0 Central.

I met Geoff, a fellow Edmontonian, a few weeks back and we went for lunch to talk about all things Web 2.0 and to learn a little about his company Domain Name Bakery.

I’d browsed his site and there looked to be a good number of domains for sale that might appeal to budding Web 2.0 Entrepreneurs. I also liked his simple pricing structure. No auction, no haggling, no bidding war, one price of $995 for all domains.

In the spirit of his company name “bakery” I’ve arranged a special discount of $100 for Web 2.0 Central readers. Every week or so the featured domain will change on the site. You can save yourself a cool $100 and get that domain for only $895.

Come back often to see what domain is featured or head over to Domain Name Bakery and see what else they have ‘in the oven’.

Save $100 on the featured domain this week: www.Podstreet.com

Marc Canter has been hyping up his DLA (Digital Lifestyle Aggregator) for some time now. I received an email inviting me to join in despite the fact I don’t think I signed up for the service… I did get a chance to meet Marc a couple times… so it’s all good by me.

The feature list of People Aggregator is daunting, I’m still attempting to digest it all. In short looks like a social networking site with blogging, photos, audio, video, events, reviews and groups. At it’s core, it’s designed to centralize or I suppose aggregate

It’s the first service in the ‘wild’ that I’ve found taking advantage of the whole distributed identity concept. You can login to People Aggregator with your SXIP login, Live Journal login or through your Flickr login. I’m anxious to see this whole identity thing take off so can centrally manage my identities… and forget a few passwords in the process.

If you want to try out People Aggregator for yourself, throw your name and email in the comments and I’ll send you off an invite.
