Social bookmarking allows web users to search, share, organize, and store the bookmarks of different web pages. This can be done publicly or privately (in private groups), or a combination of the two. People who are allowed to view the bookmarks can view them using a variety of different functions to sort and tag them.

Most of the services that provide social bookmarking encourage you to organize bookmarks with informal tags. They allow bookmarks to be viewed with their associations to the tag, including information on the users that bookmarked those sites. Some services will even have RSS feeds for their lists, and you will be alerted when new bookmarks are shared, tagged, or saved.

The tagging and descriptions used in bookmarking is referred to as external meta data and can have huge benefits in SEO, because the information used in the tagging is not controlled by the site owners, but by the public. In essence, the information in external meta tags should be much more valuable than external inbound link anchor text or directory co citation. Especially if there are hundreds or thousands of users tagging these sites.

NoFollow is a non-standard HTML attribute value which is used to police the outbound link value of user generated content, especially blog commenting. NoFollow is used to communicate with search engines to tell them that a link should not be used to pass on link juice, or “PageRank”.

The idea is that it will help reduce people who spam links, making sure that search engines get better results when keywords are searched, and many social bookmarking sites havee implemented this strategy. However, there are social bookmarking sites that do not use nofollow in their HTML tags, and this is important for you to understand when you are developing your social SEO strategies.

Social Bookmarking Sites Which Don’t Use NoFollow

Listible is a newer social bookmarking site, and it is very random. You can start a list about anything from TV theme songs to Firefox extensions. Users can then rate items and leave their comments.

Furl, one of the services offered by LookSmart, allows you to copy web pages and then save, search, and share them. This social bookmarking site is great for everything from job searches to research papers to shopping lists. You can access Furl from any computer, and your favorites are always accessible.

Yahoo My Web 2.0 Beta is a social search engine, meaning that people and the search engine technology work in harmony to create the optimum search experience. You can browse by keyword or search out interesting subjects. It offers you a way to bookmark and network simultaneously.

Propeller is a hybrid of social bookmarking and social news sharing, with a voting system like Digg and hot stories, but it’s also owned by AOL, uses organic links in its stories, and also includes bookmark style tagging.

Flickr gives social bookmarking a different spin – the site is all about photos. You can upload and tag your favorites, and then other users can bookmark them and share them with their friends. You can even leave comments as to why you like or do not like a particular image. Flickr lets its users place an HTML link in their photo descriptions - perfect for high rankings and relevant link juice.

Digg.com can get a little crazy and confusing, since it is open for anyone to post sites and leave comments. The users of Digg.com are not shy about telling the world how they feel about different sites (especially if your story or ‘bookmark’ makes the homepage after receiving enough votes), and most of the posts are featured around technology items.

Technorati Faves is a great place to bookmark sites on an authority social site without having the use of NoFollow cast a shadow on your links.

Slashdot is the original when it comes to social bookmarking sites. Slashdot offers both personal bookmarks and summaries of stories which may or may not be approved to make it to the homepage. Users can submit links and stories and have other users leave comments. Submissions do have to be pre-approved, which is a downside for some users.

Searchles is a social bookmarking oriented search engine with tagging, video upload, groups and voting. It’s also run by a search company, DumbFind, so they’ve made it extra search engine friendly.

With your knowledge of the top social bookmarking sites that do not use nofollow, you can appropriately add these to your linking strategy. Remember, if a social bookmarking sites uses nofollow links, then your website will not garner the link juice benefits from these backlinks.

The Real Power of Social Bookmarks

However, don’t overlook the power of social bookmarking, especially for the major sites which use NoFollow, because their tags and external meta data can still be used to qualify and classify major sites. Del.icio.us and StumbleUpon should be your major social bookmarking sites to join because even if you don’t get the longterm link benefits of a No Follow, you’ll have the long term benefits of external meta data, votes and traffic (Delicious and StumbleUpon combined drove about 10,000 users to this story about using Images in Blog Posts over the past two days.)

How Search Engines Can Use Social Bookmarks

Monitoring social bookmarking services like Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon and Ma.gnolia can help search engines in multiple ways by:

Indexing Sites Faster : Humans bookmark sites launched by their friends or colleagues before a search engine bot can find them.

Deeper Indexing : Many pages bookmarked are deep into sites and sometimes not as easily linked to by others, found via bad or nonexistent site navigation or linked to from external pages.

Defining Quality : If someone takes the time to bookmark a site, it usually has some quality to it.

Measuring Quality : Essentially if more users bookmark a page, the more quality and relevance that site has. A site with multiple bookmarks across multiple bookmarking services by multiple users is much more of an authority than a site with only several bookmarks by the same user.

External Meta Data : Users who bookmark sites tag them with keywords and descriptions which add an honest and unbiased definition which is created by the public and not the owner of the site.

Co Citation : Social bookmarking sites tend to categorize sites and pages based upon the tags used by humans to describe the site; therefore search algortihms can classify these sites with their peers.

In addition, by indexing the social measurement variables such as commenting and votes at Digg, Reddit, Netscape and various niche oriented (all of those Pligg powered hubs), search engine algorithms can also benefit from social news sharing sites by:

Number of Votes : Similar to the number of bookmarks, the more votes a page receives on Digg or Reddit, the more useful that information usually is. If the same page receives multiple votes across multiple social news voting sites, the higher quality the site.

Categorization : Like Co Citation, categorization can help define the subject of a site, therefore better helping the engine address searcher intent.

Commenting : The number of comments can be compared to the number of votes, the higher the comment to voting ratio, the more relevant the news story or site was to the user; therefore, more relevant to the searcher.

Relevant Sites : Techmeme and Propeller (and hopefully soon Digg) suggest relevant pages and sites to the stories which make their ‘popular’ categorical pages via intra-linking or blog index monitoring. Engines can learn from these projects to help users find alternative or relevant selections in their search results.

To the best of my knowledge, no search engines are currently implementing all of these theories into their current algorithms, but we cannot overlook that Microsoft and Google are/were partners of Digg, Yahoo owns Del.icio.us and AOL runs Propeller (Netscape). These social services also offer API’s and are completely open to search spidering, which makes these variables mentioned above available to search engines for the taking.

YouTube: A True Political Democracy, or Soapbox for Transvestites?
YouTube took its video-sharing network off to Spain in the not too distant past, and teamed up with a local news station to take advantage of the nation’s election of a new prime minister. This was done in a manner similar to YouTube’s partnership with CNN for the Q&A sessions held between candidates and users. Weeks after announcing its plans for video sessions to be held in Spain, we get to see the results.
Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was oh, so politically correct with his rhetoric that it makes you remember why you always switch to a cable channel when a State of the Union Address cuts into your viewing of Deal or No Deal. But as Jason Webb mentions in a Reuters report, there’s more to YouTube Q&A than just the tame questions that the politicians choose to answer. The fact that we get to see all the videos of questions people have addressed to the candidates is just as important.
And for Zapatero, one of those clips happens to be of a man wearing a pearl necklace and a little black dress. He’s not too happy about Zapatero’s slant on same-sex marriage. So even if the politicians don’t answer every single video question and statement that’s been addressed to them, the rest of us get an even more direct and centralized manner in which to observe and participate in the conversations that occur around political issues and representatives that matter to us.
LinkedIn Releases New Firefox Toolbar

LinkedIn in this evening has announced the launch of version 3.1 toolbar specifically for FireFox. This is an update to their existing toolbar, currently in use by around 100,000 LinkedIn users. Getting folks to install a toolbar in their browsers these days is a bit like getting folks to sign up for a root canal, so they’ve tried to pack in the features to this version that will help convince you to give up a bit of valuable screen real estate.
In this version, they’ve updated support for the Info box for the web mail service of your choice, including Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, and GMail. There’s also improved support for many popular Internet job sites, including Jobs Insider for Monster, Hotjobs, Craigslist, CareerBuilder, Dice and Vault.
For those on the job market, presently (attention, ex-Yahooers), the nifty feature is that when browsing these various job sites, you’ll get access to a browser toolbar-exclusive feature called the Jobs Insider. It will alert you to any of the contacts you or your network may have inside of the company you’re looking at the information for (perfect for name dropping in your application cover letter).
Outside of the job search arena, the toolbar will allow you to look up people instantly from any website and, of course, allow you one-click access to your LinkedIn account. Adding a bookmark with Mister Wong is easy. And, there are several ways to do it.
You can use the form under "Add" to add the URL and any additional information. This is practical for using on computers, which you can't install extra tools on, for example, in an internet café.
Install the toolbar for Firefox or the buttons for Internet Explorer
Install and use the Bookmarklets.If you install the toolbar or bookmarklets, you can add a bookmark simply by clicking a button. A pop-up window will open, in which the URL and title of the site will already be filled in. You just have to add a comment and tags. And, of course, you can decide whether you want to make your bookmark private or public. If you are working from a computer, where you can't install bookmarklets, for instance at work, school, or at an internet café, there's always the more burdensome way. 6. How do I install the Firefox Toolbar?
You can download the Firefox toolbar here. You will need the Firefox browser version 1.0.Under certain circumstances, a small window might pop-up stating that Firefox prevented this site from asking you to install software on your computer. Click here to install the two buttons for the Internet Explorer. When you are asked, if you would like to open or save, choose "Open". In the next box, click on "Install". It's as easy as that, and now you have two convenient buttons for your toolbar.If you can't see the buttons after installation, check if the toolbar is visible. To do this go to your menu, click on "View" > "Toolbar" > "Links" and checkmark it. It's also possible, that the toolbar is not completely visible, because the toolbar on Internet Explorer can be moved with the mouse. Make sure the toolbar is not locked. With the first button, "Mister Wong", you can get to your Bookmarks with one click. The second button titled "Wong it!", helps you bookmark a site to Mister Wong. You just add the tags and save, and you'll be back to the original site. It only interrupts you surfing briefly, but you'll have the website bookmarked by Mister Wong, and it will be available to you anytime and from anywhere.

Mister Wong thinks searching and finding is very important. This is why Mister Wong allows you to search your own Bookmarks and the public Bookmarks of others by using one or more keywords. The search results correspond with the tags, that the Bookmarks were given on Mister Wong. Additionally, the title, URL, and comment are also searched through. If several tags are searched for, they are automatically connected with "AND", so that all possibly corresponding Bookmarks are shown. The search box allows you to preselect between Websites, Bookmarks, and Tags. By choosing "Websites", you will search through the Bookmarks of every user. If you choose "My Bookmarks", the search will be limited to your own Bookmarks. And if you choose "Tags", only the corresponding Tag will be searched for. Thanks to all the bookmarks, Mister Wong has developed his own search algorithm and index, which weighs all public Bokmarks (as well as the title, comment, and tags) with specific factors and sorts the respective Bookmarks by popularity. This way you get first class search results.
13. How can I search through my own Bookmarks by Mister Wong?
It's really easy. Just click "My Bookmarks" above to the search box.You can also add my: in front of your search. For example, by searching for my:internet, you will get a list of all your personal Bookmarks, which you tagged with the word internet. If you search several tags, you only need to put my: in front of one.

To search for a specific site, add an internet address without the http:// to your search criteria. For example, searching for site:www.mister-wong.com, you will get all the results referring to the site www.mister-wong.com

19. How can I see if other users have also saved a specific Bookmark?
In every Bookmark summary it states how many users have the link saved in their public Bookmarks. With one click on that number, you will get a list of these users. On this list is also the number of users, who have it saved privately as well.
20. How do I find experts of specific subjects?
If you got to the page of a specific Tag, for example flash, then you will see on the right-hand side a list of up to five users, who have the most public Bookmarks saved with that Tag. This makes it easy to find Power-Users with similar interests, search through their Bookmarks, and even contact them with a private message.

If you are using Firefox, then it's no problem. You've probably already noticed, that with the search box in the upper right-hand corner, you can search several internet sites. Mister Wong has an import page, where you can import your Bookmarks. On every user's userpage, you will see, as already mentioned, two links at the top. You can send a message to them with one click, by clicking on the right link ("Send message"). Please be considerate of others' privacy and do not misuse this feature!
38. How can I recommend Bookmarks?
Each of your bookmarks, has three links with gray backgrounds. One is for editing, one for deleting, and one for recommending the bookmark to others. If you click on the link "recommend", a red-outlined box opens up. Fill in a username or email address, a short comment, and click recommend. That's how easy it is.
39. How can I send messages to other users?
You can send messages to other users under "Messages" in your menu. A pull-down menu of your Buddies makes it even easier to send messages to them. The Blacklist, which you can also manage from here, is a list of people you no longer want to receive messages from. And, of course, under "Messages" you can read your sent and received messages.You can also send users messages from a user's Bookmarks page. When you are on their Bookmarks page, just click on the "Send message" link. It's that easy. It can happen, that users have deactivated the messaging feature or have put you on their Blacklist, a decision that should be respected.
40. How can I deactivate messages from others?
Every user can put other users, who they no longer want to receieve messages from, on the Blacklist. It is also possible to deactivate the messaging feature here under "Messages" by checking No to Receive messages. You can also decide there, if you want to receieve emails when you get new messages.
41. How do I find a Group?
Mister Wong says: Wonging in a group is twice the fun.On our main Groups page, we not only list new groups, but also popular groups with lots of members and bookmarks. You can either look through all Groups in alphabetical order here or use the search box on the Groups page.
42. How do I set up a Group?
You can set up a Group on this page. Beyond giving your Group a name and description, you can also decide if you want to make it public to everyone or private, so that only members can see the bookmarks.Tags

When you are on the Overview page or on another user's Bookmarks, you will notice two links with gray highlighted links, "save" and "recommend". Click on "save" and a mask will open up, which you can use to save the link to your own Bookmarks.

Fanista - Bringing Amway into the 21st Century
It would seem Amway, that company the brought the term “pyramid schemes” to a whole new light in the 1980’s, has decided to have a go at the 21st century by backing a new site named “Fanista“.
With a focus on CDs and DVDs for now, Fanista will later be adding books and digital downloads. And, yes, there is a pyramid scheme involved. Now named “Common Interest Commerce” (or CIC), the idea is that you bring in your friends and you earn 5% of what they buy, and then you get 5% of whatever their referrals buy. You will earn “insider perks” and “achieve social status” for being a “tastemaker”. Gee… this sounds so much like one of those Amway pitches I got trapped in to listening to every few months in the late 1980’s.
While it sounds loosely like an affiliate program that we’re all familiar with nowadays, it’s the active recruitment that hearkens back to the old Amway business model. Considering the bad taste that the name Amway leaves in most people’s mouthes probably won’t help this site gain much momentum, if any.

Will a MySpace Re-Design Fix It?

MG Seigler over at ParisLemon spoke today about a rumored MySpace re-design in the works. MG likes to refer to MySpace as “designed by someone who…simply spilled coffee over their keyboard and as they blotted it up pumped out MySpace”. I, myself, like to call MySpace the Internet’s virtual trailer park. Between the shoddy design, the shady origins of the company, and the unending glitter and widgets, for those that are above the age of 14, surfing the site is not one of the world’s more pleasurable experiences.
The rumor is that MySpace is attempting to snag Vimeo designer and Connected Ventures co-founder Zach Klein. In case you missed Vimeo, they’re Yet Another YouTube clone, with pretty aesthetics. Whereas most sites attempting to clone the functionality of industry leaders tend to go offshore for their design work, Vimeo took the route of spending some time to create an in-house design that even Zeldman could be proud of, and it is the one thing that I think keeps them relevant as a site. It’s one of the few video-sharing websites that I can go to and not feel overwhelmed by content and underwhelmed by the design.
For MySpace to turn themselves into a serious social network with the credibility of Facebook, can they stop at a re-engineered interface, or do they need to go further than that? To address that, they need to address what is wrong with MySpace.
No, Obviously That’s Not Enough
Back when I was running my podcast hosting company, I made it a point to set down some very strict style, ethical and business policy guidelines to the partners I brought into it. I envisioned the company becoming an industry leader in the podcasting community (unfortunately, I was based in South Florida and Hurricane Wilma had other plans for me). I wanted the company to stick around a while, and as such, I knew that the policy guidelines that I set forth in the genesis of the company would trickle down into any new employee hires, what sorts of features they would develop, thus how the functionality of the site would work, and how our resulting public image would come across.
The corporate culture of MySpace can be traced back to a group of folks who made their living in marketing on the Internet in the early days when spam was still called Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE), and spyware was considered making software simply “ad-supported.” I’ll refrain from making comparisons to Project ~~Bacn~~ Beacon here, because that’s not the direction I want to go today. The point I’m driving at here is that the fact that MySpace was engineered to be a sticky and viral spam platform is evident in the lackadaisical attitude management has to this day in stopping the ten or fifteen pieces of system messages I get (per day!) on MySpace either pitching me porn or sub-prime mortgages.
Unsolicited Advice to MySpace
So yes, a new design, geared towards enhancing the user experience as opposed to monetizing the user experience is going to help, but they also need to tap a pool of engineers and developers with a mindset and ethos comparable to the open source movement or the hippy-happy “do no evil” mentality you find at Google. Only then, from a top down ethics overhaul within the company are they going to find themselves competitive and innovating past what Facebook has to offer.
You’re probably saying to yourself that this sounds an awful lot like philosophy or political analysis, as opposed to some sort of technology analysis. If you are in fact saying that, you’d be right. We are talking about, after all, engineering systems designed to facilitate the interaction between human beings, and it is very difficult to engage in that without getting a little Dale Carnegie about it. If MySpace can go in for some corporate therapy to root out some of its deep-seated issues, I think it could quite easily metamorphosis into something that you don’t have to be an adolescent to love.

YouTube Launches Chinese Language Site for Taiwan; Reason for Censorship?

YouTube has launched a new Chinese language site designed specifically for Taiwan.
In addition to user-generated content, the site features professionally produced clips from local media partners, including China Television Co., Sanlih E-Television Co., Lion Travel Service Co. and Taiwan Broadcasting System.

According to reports, Taiwan has been encouraging users to upload videos to YouTube (previously through the English version) to promote goodwill for the country, which has often been at odds with China.

Could today's launch be the reason we earlier received reports that YouTube is currently being blocked in China? It would make sense given the tense political climate between the two countries, and China has become notorious for blocking websites. There are also currently reports circulating that inside China, Google Blog Search, Yahoo, and Live.com are all being re-directed to Chinese search engine Baidu.

Twype (short for “Twitter to Skype”) is a new Windows-only tray tool that can help you update your Skype mood on the fly without doing anymore than posting to Twitter, or listening to music.

All you need to do is download a small executable file, install, enter your account info, and you’re ready to go. Once every five minutes the program will check your Twitter account and paste it to your Skype mood area. If you use Winamp, you can also set it to check to see what song you’re playing, and that will be pasted to your mood. With Winamp, it checks every five seconds, and will override the need to check Twitter. Once you stop Winamp, it will revert to checking for new tweets.

While I personally don’t see why you need your mood updated quite that often, apparently there are some out there who want to. The file is available at Voidstar.
GMail: 42GB Free Storage by 2038
Gmail just revised their storage estimates for the next 1449 years. Googlified dug around in the code and discovered that you’ll be getting a tiny increase to 2912MB on Friday, 4.2GB by October 23, 6GB by January 4 2008, 42GB by 2038 and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB by 3456. Google has since since confirmed by on the Gmail blog that the counter’s speed has been increased.

Meanwhile, the paid storage is also getting a bump: $20 used to buy you 6GB extra, but it will now get you 10GB. The other prices are 40GB for 75/year, 150GB for $250/year and 400GB for $500/year.

This is reassuring: Google is going to keep increasing the free storage despite having a paid plan they could push users over to. If you’re just about to exceed the limit on your Gmail account and you’re planning to add paid storage, it may be worth holding on for 11 more days. And somehow I don’t think 42GB will be considered very much by 2038: I expect we’ll be talking in terabytes by then.
