Hi all, I am Tachyon,
Robert, who runs the excellent website Web420, has asked me to make some blog posts here, about psychedelia. Since this subject is seen by many as obsolete I really need feedback, so please write and let me know what you would like to see here.

In my last post, I tried to do a broad overview of psychedelia, i.e. art, music,
literature, history etc. I will try to expand on these subjects.

Local Happenings: I live in Chicago, and the most relevant thing here this week is

The Chicago Peace Fest.

This will feature several very cool local bands, I only became aware of this when I went to a local bar in Greek Town, and saw the poster in the window and thought

“Oh wow, this would be very cool for the Web420 site”. That’s why it’s here. We are very lucky here in Chicago as we get to see many of these type music festivals every year.

We have The Blues Fest and The Jazz Fest, etc. Were lucky, LOL.

Literature: I am an avid reader, and usually have two or three books going at once so this is important to me. Here’s a list of books anyone interested in psychedelia should definitely read:

1. On The Road-Jack Kerouac
The first of the Beat Generation novels, a must read.

2. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test-Tom Wolfe

This is about the Merry Pranksters, anyone who has ever done LSD, or wonders what acid is like, should read this.

As an aside Ken Kesey, a major character in this novel, is the guy who wrote One Flew over The Cuckoo’s Nest

3. PiHKAL and TiHKAL – Andrew Shulgin

For you chemistry buffs out there, these are the ” bibles” of Andrew “Sasha” Shulgin , who single-handedly discovered and synthesized just about every hallucinogenic/amphetamine there is.

(3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) also known as X or ecstasy.

4. Carlos Castaneda- “The Books of Power”

a. The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way Of Knowledge

b. A Separate Reality

c. Journey To Ixtlan

Anyone who had hippies for parents like me, will remember these, if you don’t you should read them!

Where to Now Psychedelia?

Psychedelia -
Coined by psychiatrists in the late 50′s to describe the effects of hallucinogenic drugs which were being tested for therapeutic values; the word psychedelic (mind-manifesting) eventually came to cover a more broad scope of things that had profound effects on the senses and mind.

Psychedelic Art is used to describe work which attempts to explore the the inner world of the mind. Technically drawn from a mix of the earlier works of the surrealists, such as Dalí and Escher, the abstractionists such as Lichtenstein and Pollack, It had a golden age in the late 60′s and early 70′s, with widespread use in album art, posters, and several films, most notably 2001 A Space Odyssey. With the advent of digital photography and computer generated imagery, coupled with a renewed interest by younger artists, it is enjoying a resurgence.

Psychedelic Music drawn from the psychedelic culture of the mid 60′s was used to enhance or reflect hallucinogenic drug experiences, beginning with bands like the Holy Modal Rounders, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Captain Beefheart, Country Joe and the Fish, The Great Society and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Later would come psychedelic works from the Beatles, the Byrds, Rolling Stones, Traffic, Soft Machine, Kraftwerk, and of course Pink Floyd, perhaps the seminal psychedelic band. It would influence, and spin off many new genres in rock, and lives today in electronica and “rave” music.

Psychedelic Literature is generally thought of as being books having to do with drugs or drug use, such as Andrew Shulgin’s PiHKAL and TiHKAL, but many books have been written around psychedelic experiences, and a genre which came out of the Beat Generation’s writers, i.e. On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Howl by Allen Ginsburg, Naked Lunch by William Burroughs, could be considered precursors to psychedelic “story telling”, in the tradition of Carlos Castaneda’s “Books Of Power“. Arguably, some early writings of H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and Jules Verne could be said to have psychedelic elements and ideas in them. At least two of those authors were known to have used laudanum and/or opium. Without question, Lewis Carrol’s “Alice In Wonderland” contains strong psychedelic imagery, and was written in 1865.

So where is psychedelia now?

Conventional thought says it’s time has passed. I don’t think so.

I think we are creating the next wave or genre of psychedelia now. The people here at Web420 form the next stage in the history of psychedelia, we are a new organization which attempts to explore the workings of the inner mind through interaction. The Simpsons Tripping Out

Lisa takes happy pills, Bart drinks an experimental Squishy, Marge drinks tap water dosed with LSD, Mr. Burns inhales an ether soaked rag, Dr. Hibbert smokes marijuana, Homer eats Guatemalan insanity peppers, licks hallucinogenic toads, hallucinates from eating too much meat, and smokes marijuana.

This is what happened right after homer ate the Guatemalan insanity pepper. Homer starts tripping out while talking to Flanders.

How to add Facebook and Twitter buttons to features, teasers, and full articles using hooks

Recently I was redesigning this blog and came to the conclusion that I wanted to have easily accessible Facebook and Twitter share buttons for each post. As I was looking for information on how to install the new Twitter button on WordPress I realized that the new Twitter sharing button came out somewhat recently and there weren’t very many resources on how to install the button on my type of site yet. I decided to write a tutorial to help people add the Facebook and Twitter sharing buttons to the WordPress Thesis theme using hooks.

I have WordPress 3.01 and Thesis 1.8. These instructions may work with other versions, but I don’t know if they do or not…

To make sure the buttons fit the page properly you may need to set these options

Thumbnails 112px wide or smaller
Under wp-admin > Thesis > Design Options > Default Thumbnail Settings > I have horizontal position set to left with text wrap. Vertical position is set to before post/page content. Default thumbnail width is 112, default thumbnail height is 84. (the buttons will fit if you have smaller thumbnails or no thumbnails)

Content Column width of at least 580px
Under wp-admin > Thesis > Design Options > Site layout > Make sure content column is set to 580px or larger.

Edit your custom_functions.php file and add the following code (it should be located at /wp-content/themes/thesis_18/custom/custom_functions.php)

I think that is all you need to do. You may want to customize the div for each button. Also the twitter button width is actually 110px, but loads it as 100px in the post, and 80px in the teaser so it fits. This makes it slightly outside the template with 580px content width; If you have more space I would recommend setting the width for it to 110px.

Customize the code for different configurations

If you want to add just the Facebook or Twitter button by themselves
If you only want the Facebook buttons you would use the two add_action hooks that say: facebook_like_button, and facebook_like_button1, and add the two pieces of code that start with /* FACEBOOK BUTTON INSIDE POST BOX */, and /* FACEBOOK BUTTON INSIDE POST BOX *\ to your custom_functions.php. If you only want the twitter buttons do the same thing but only use the two add_action hooks and two codes for Twitter.

*You will probably need to adjust the div settings when using just the Facebook or Twitter buttons alone.

Zombie Apocalypse: Left 4 Dead – Survival – Another shooter game where you fight against hordes of zombies. This game has tons of weapon upgrades and stuff

Built to Spill – Distopian Dream Girl
This song is off Built to Spill’s sophomore release, There’s Nothing Wrong With Love. This was the second song of the night, recorded live at The Pageant Theater in St. Louis, Missouri on September 29, 2009. The band was touring in support of their newest record, There Is No Enemy which is due out in record stores on October 6th, 2009.

Klaxons – Gravitys Rainbow
The song appears on the Klaxon’s album Myths of the Near Future. It is named after Thomas Pynchon’s novel of the same name. The song was first released on Angular Records as a Double A-side with “The Bouncer” in March 2006 and was limited to 500 copies on 7″ vinyl only. In September 2006, it was released on 12″ vinyl with three remixes of the track. It reached a peak position of number 35 on the UK Singles Chart.

Obama and Empire by John Pilger
John Pilger is a great investigative journalist who looks into human rights abuses among other areas. In this video Pilger talks about how Obama serves corporate interests like most others US politicians, but people think he is a radical or socialist, and may make things better when in reality he is not doing so. Obama got more corporate funding for his presidential campaign than McCain did. The war is Iraq is continuing, Guantanamo bay is still open, companies are destroying the environment and abusing global human rights. The problem is that protesting has stopped because people believe in Obama. Obama is the perfect marketing tool because he can do anything and a lot of people who don’t pay close attention to politics (most US citizens) will still support him. The movie Requiem for a Dream is a difficult movie to watch, but gives the audience a glimpse into a world they might not ever see. I watched the movie on Hulu with my girlfriend about a month before we watched it in class. The movie portrays a group of people who eventually succumb to the horrors of drug addiction and despair. Drug addiction can change people who are full of hope and dreams into people who don’t care about anything else but getting high. People who are addicted will sometimes do anything to get their fix, and that is what Requiem for a Dream is about.

Drugs can dislocate us from ourselves and others. Drugs can cause a person to lose sight of hopes and dreams in order to satisfy cravings, and/or avoid withdrawals. In people’s brains there is an interaction between reactive reward pathways and reflective reward pathways. The reactive reward pathways motivate people towards immediate gratification through the use of things like cues and associations, while the reflective reward pathways motivate people for more abstract or long term things, for planning, reaching goals, cognitive, or social rewards. As a person transitions into drug addiction, the reflective and reactive reward systems both adapt, and work together to create exceptionally salient pathways encouraging drug use. The pathways encouraging drug use can be so strong that it overrides other reflective reward pathways that discourage drug use, making the person more concerned about using drugs than they are about life goals, social reinforcement, relationships with others, and anything else that could prevent them from using the drug. People become willing to do anything to get drug, and this movie dramatically portrayed it. In Requiem for a Dream they were willing to do anything they had to do to get more heroin, including prostitution, losing an arm, leaving a girlfriend behind, driving across the country, risking death, and prison time. As drugs become the focal point of someone’s life everything else they once enjoyed can fade away and lose meaning, leaving them stranded and hopeless with nothing left but the drug addiction, and the guilt.

A lot of times addicts end up doing terrible things like stealing, or lying to people they are close to. In Requiem for a Dream the addict steals his mother’s TV to pawn for drug money. Addicts use their reflective reward system to focus on the drugs, how and where to get their next fix, and avoid thinking about their own stressful circumstances. Addict’s lives can become very stressful, and a lot of times addicts don’t have adequate coping mechanisms to deal with the stress. When under a lot of stress they often get cravings to use drugs; if confronted about their drug addiction many addicts experience cravings to go use drugs. After using drugs to cope with stress for a period of time the associations formed in the brain can become very salient, making it difficult for addicts to deal with stress without wanting to use drugs every time. As the drug addiction progresses the old coping mechanisms used for dealing with stress can become less effective, making the person rely even more on the drug in times of stress. In Requiem for a Dream as the people became more and more addicted they changed, they didn’t care about opening up a clothing store or about each other as much at the end. They clung to their old dreams as they faded away. Eventually all they cared about was finding anyone who had heroin for sale or trade.

The movie is hard to watch because it’s difficult to see people besieged with the hopelessness and despair of drug addiction. Many drug addicts have sacrificed everything for addiction; it destroys people’s lives and tears families apart. The underlying neurobiology determines someone’s potential for becoming addicted to any particular substance, while many people try drugs, only people with certain neurobiology end up addicted, others walk away from them without any addiction. In the movie they are addicted to heroin, and it’s hard to see people out of control and struggling with addiction when they need to get treatment so they can get their lives back in order.

Addicts usually have an underlying neurobiology that makes them prone to becoming addicted before they ever try a substance. If they use a particular substance they may have an experience on the drug that has a big influence on their thoughts and behaviors. They may feel like the drug filled in something that they have always been missing. They may become obsessed with the drug, and won’t be able to do anything but think about using it again. They may feel in love with the drug. The brain can form strong associations with places, people, paraphernalia, and environments, reminding the person about the drug whenever they see one of these cues. Whenever something good happens to them they may want to use the drug, or whenever they have a stressful experience, or whenever they see a spoon, or see a straw. After using a drug a few times the pathways can become so strong the person will do anything to anyone to get more drugs, and nothing else in their lives matters anymore. Some people with certain underlying neurobiology can go from having dreams and aspirations to addiction within a very short amount of time, and after only a few uses of a drug. In the movie Requiem for a Dream they went from using drugs and still having dreams and aspirations, to desperate drug addicts who would do anything for drugs, and didn’t care about anything else within one year.

Psychedelic Drugs = Cure for Alcoholism?

Scientists are debating the idea of using psychedelic drugs in a therapeutic fashion to treat a number of serious medical conditions including alcoholism. Studies have found success using psychedelics to treat conditions including post traumatic stress disorder, drug addiction, obsessive compulsive disorder, and cluster headaches. Scientists in the past few decades have had difficulty finding funding to conduct psychedelic research, but stronger financial support has paved the way for a resurgence of psychedelic studies. Funding is largely provided by two organizations, The Heffter Research institute, and The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). This article will focus on how psychedelic drugs are used to treat alcoholism.

Canadian psychiatrists Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond experimented with giving psychedelic drugs to alcoholics in the 1950s. At the time the prevailing philosophy was that addicts did better after hitting ‘rock bottom’; the researchers thought that LSD and mescaline would scare addicts away from drinking after having a bad trip. Instead of having a bad trip most of the addicts had a pleasurable experience, leading them to see things in their life in a new way, and enabling them to control their drinking. Their studies showed a high success rate in helping alcoholics quit drinking using LSD and mescaline.

Neuroscience research has found that LSD disrupts the circuitry maintaining alcohol addiction, and allows the addict to escape from the addiction cycle… Won’t people just become addicted to psychedelics? No, at least not physically addicted. Psychedelics do not cause dopamine to be released on the nucleus accumbens, and therefore by definition are not physically addictive. Can’t recreational use cause permanent schizophrenia or psychosis? Nope, that is just another drug rumor. Psychedelics can unmask symptoms of schizophrenia for people who already have or are developing schizophrenia, but it doesn’t cause any person with normal brain functioning to develop schizophrenia or psychosis.

Psychedelics have proven successful in treating alcoholics who had failed other methods of controlling their drinking. When LSD and talk therapy were combined it proved successful in helping over half the people remain sober for over two years. Another study had a ninety percent success rate treating alcoholism using the same method. These are very high success rates for something so difficult to treat like alcoholism. Many of the people in the study claimed that the LSD treatment had saved their lives.
